World Investment Report 2011: Non-equity Modes of International Production and Development

Forthcoming

This Report is widely regarded as the most authoritative source of data and analysis on the activities of transnational corporations, national and international regulatory regimes, and their implications for development. The 2011 edition focuses on the strategic use of non-equity modalities (e.g. contract manufacturing, service outsourcing, licensing, franchising, etc.) by transnational corporations in their management of global value chains and international operations. Additional highlights include a discussion of the interplay between foreign direct investment and industrial policy, as well as an assessment of the origin, rise and global map of state-owned transnational corporations. It also contains a statistical annex with data on flows and stocks of foreign direct investment for 196 economies.

World Drug Report 2012

Many illicit drug markets have reached global dimensions and require control strategies on a comparable scale. In that context, there is a need to better understand these transnational markets and the manner in which they operate. This annual Report is a contribution towards that objective. It presents comprehensive information on the illicit drug situation and provides detailed estimates and trend analysis on production, trafficking and consumption in the opium/heroin, coca/cocaine, cannabis and amphetamine-type stimulants markets.

Fighting Irrelevance: The Role of Regional Trade Agreements in International Production Networks in Asia

Forthcoming

The objective of this study is to explore the linkages between existing regional trade agreements and international production networks in the region. This book provides new evidence from selected sectors of certain Asian economies on the linkages between international production networks and regional trade agreements. The research project was part of the Phase II research program of the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade (ARTNeT). The project focused on only three sectors in five Asian countries — automotive, textiles and clothing, and electronics — which have proven to be fruitful areas for the establishment of international production networks.

Market Access, Transparency and Fairness in Global Trade: Export Impact for Good

This new Report concludes that "market access begins at home". It argues that further reducing barriers to trade between developing countries needs to be an essential part of the way forward. The report is the first of an annual series on market access issues and focuses on reducing global poverty by improving market entry and trade transparency for developing countries. In this Report, a new methodology was applied, offering more accurate estimates of global poverty distribution and the impact of export growth on poverty.

Forthcoming

The first of a new series, this Report sets benchmarks and provides forward-looking analysis of the 2015 targets set by the United Nations General Assembly in its 2011 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS. The UNAIDS Report asks "how will we get there?" and presents key data and illustrative figures covering the decade 2006 to 2015. An incisive narrative examines the new global targets in the Political Declaration and in the UNAIDS strategy on AIDS, and it reviews options and implications to stop the AIDS epidemic. Numerical targets are charted and their implications reviewed for each region.

The Financial and Economic Crisis of 2008-2009 and Developing Countries

This book examines how developing countries were affected by the global economic and financial crisis. It reflects on lessons learnt and on the policy agenda necessary for supporting such countries. Contributions fall into three categories: 1) general issues on the causes of the crisis and its transmission to the developing world; 2) country and regional case studies; and 3) policy recommendations. It is found that there is widespread awareness of a growing wedge between financial-sector growth and the real economy in many countries, which call for a rethinking of approaches to financial liberalization. Also, in the same way as the roles of business and the State need to be rebalanced at the national level, economic globalization requires enhanced global governance. Finally, the macroeconomic strategies of developing countries may need redirecting towards greater emphasis on employment creation and active domestic demand management.

Review of Maritime Transport 2010

More than 80 per cent of international trade in goods is carried by sea, and an even higher percentage of developing-country trade is carried in ships. This annual publication is an important source of information on this vital sector. It closely monitors developments affecting world seaborne trade, freight rates, ports, surface transport, and logistics services, as well as trends in ship ownership and control and fleet age, tonnage supply, and productivity. The Review contains a chapter on legal and regulatory developments and each year includes a chapter highlighting a different region. In 2010, the focus is on Asia and the Pacific.

State of the World Population Report 2011

In late 2011, the global population will reach 7 billion, up from 6 billion in barely 12 years. This Report examines how the world got to this milestone, mentioning factors such as the large strides in health care that allow older people to live longer, more children to survive to adulthood and beyond, as well as policies and other initiatives that allow women to play a stronger role in society. This overview includes analysis of the latest demographic trends, such as the unprecedented "youth bulge", as well as projections and implications for the quality of life of women, men and young people. The Report will include original reporting from China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Finland, India, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Global Report on Homicide

Due to its serious nature and recording by multiple data sources (police and public health), intentional homicide is widely accepted as one of the most accurate, reliable and comparable crime indicators for world crime trends and patterns. Using data from the United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (UN-CTS) and the latest "homicide statistics" dataset of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Report provides a global overview of levels and trends of intentional homicide and its relationship with, and impact on, human development. The Report also examines the links between homicide and forms of organized crime, including drug trafficking, as well as the use of firearms. It describes characteristics of homicide victims and perpetrators (including from the gender perspective) as well as detailed data on homicide location.
