From the UNM President

O

N BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO’s students, faculty and staff, thank you for your generous support this year. It is an honor to write to you as your interim president.

The University of New Mexico continues to fulfill its mission as the state’s

flagship institution in many ways. I am proud to share some of the successes we had this year. UNM’s Health Sciences Center, for the 13th year in a row, received a record amount of external research funding. Our Center for High Technology Materials received more than 200 U.S. Patents. One of our physics graduate students was part of the team that discovered two supermassive black holes on the edge of our galaxy, Many of our academic programs remain highly ranked nationally, with UNM ranking third in the nation among public colleges and institutions in improved student critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. We also have been very effective in our continuing efforts to help students succeed academically. This year, our four-year graduation rate

garnering a significant amount of national and global media coverage.

reached 29 percent (a 92 percent increase since 2012), and our five-year graduation rate is 43 percent (a 9 percent increase since 2012). In addition,

C H AO U K I T. ABDALLAH

we have had success in retaining our freshman students, achieving an 80 percent retention rate. These accomplishments are in part due to our programs aimed at helping improve student readiness in the summer prior to attending UNM, as well as providing continuous support throughout their UNM career. This success also can be largely attributed to additional scholarships and programmatic support from generous donors like you. Your support is increasingly even more critical to the University, our students and programs as state funding levels continue to decrease. We remain grateful for the steadfast support of our individual, corporate and foundation donors. As each of us

defines all of us, so does each generously given contribution define your commitment to advancing UNM’s many missions—student scholarship, innovative research, advanced patient care, and so much more. Your gifts are the foundation of success at UNM. Thank you for your commitment to your university! CHAOU KI T. AB DALL AH Interim President University of New Mexico 1

From the UNM Foundation Leadership educational opportunities and a design space for UNM’s talented architecture students. While the gifts mentioned above benefit many people at once, there are times when gifts help one person at a time. One such gift is the Rayburn Reaching Up Fund (featured on page 14) at the UNM Department of Physics and Astronomy, which helps students achieve their academic goals by giving them the opportunity to participate in conferences, cutting-edge research, and community outreach events. As these stories and the others featured in this annual report demonstrate, every gift regardless of amount can make an impact, create an opportunity, and change a world. Thank you to all of our donors—individuals, corporations and foundations—who honor UNM through their generosity. On behalf of our students, faculty, staff, student-athletes, coaches, health care providers, patients and their families, we thank you for your continued support.

ACH GIFT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO creates a foundation for someone’s future— and holds meaning for the donor choosing to make a positive impact on someone’s life. Collectively, these gifts also hold meaning for the students, faculty, staff, researchers, health care providers and patients who benefit from this generosity. They create a foundation for building a brighter future. Some gifts benefit a wide variety of people. For example, Larry Chavez grew up in Albuquerque and worked at University Stadium selling sodas as a 13-year-old. His recent gift (featured on page 10) benefits Lobo Athletics, Popejoy Hall, Anderson School of Management and UNM Children’s Hospital. Other gifts benefit specific programs, such as Antoine Predock and Constance DeJong’s gift (featured on page 12). They donated Antoine’s architectural models, sketches, and notes as well as his design studio to create

the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees and the UNM Board of Regents. CIF investments are invested for the long-term using a diversified approach with the principal goal of maximizing the return, and thus the benefit to UNM, at a commensurate and acceptable level of risk. Investment strategy is guided by the concept of complementary managers who are responsible for specific asset categories and management styles in a diversified portfolio (see the CIF Asset Allocation chart at right). The CIF finished the year with a market value of approximately $425.3 million, compared to $395.1 million a year ago, and an investment return of 11.8 percent, compared to -1.3 percent the previous fiscal year. The University receives a spending distribution from the endowment annually. (See the CIF Spending Distribution in the far right lower corner.) In addition to customary investment management expenses, the Foundation receives a development funding allocation of 1.85 percent, which is assessed against each participating fund. The endowment principal remains invested to benefit UNM for years to come.

How We Report Your Gifts FY 2016-2017

T

HE UNM FOUNDATION (UNMF) complies with various standards when reporting

private gifts, depending on the purpose of the report and the requirements of the requesting organization. We welcome your questions at (505) 313-7600. This UNMF Annual Report of Giving reports the total effort of the UNM community in engaging private donors. Using Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) campaign counting methods, qualifying bequests, cash and in-kind gifts donated directly to

Principles (GAAP). Unlike campaign reporting, gifts of bequests, cash and in-kind gifts donated directly to UNMaffiliated units, as well as pledges outside the criteria for GAAP, are omitted. Additionally, we participate in the Voluntary Support for Education Survey (VSE), which requires only gifts of cash and cash equivalents be reported. Given their differing objectives, each of these standards reports the gifts received by UNM differently. Campaign

Dreaming Big Largest-Ever Philanthropic Agreement for UNM Athletics Caps Off a Longtime Lobo’s Dream BY M I CH E LLE G . M c R U I Z

F O R

T H E

T

F U T U R E

HE FIRST LOBOS GAME Larry Chavez (BBA ’69) saw happened to be the first-ever game at University Stadium, against the University of Mexico. The year was 1960, and 13-year-old Larry

and his pals peered through a chain-link fence to watch the Lobos pummel the Pumas, 66-0. That experience gave him a taste of college life and the dream of becoming a Lobo. His first job was at the stadium, where he hustled to sell more ice-cold sodas than the other guys. Today, Chavez has brought his boyhood dream of Lobohood to its fullest expression with a $10 million, 10-year agreement between UNM Athletics and his company, Dreamstyle Remodeling. The gift is the largest philanthropic agreement in UNM Athletics history and will benefit other UNM departments as well. For a business that Larry started in 1989 with his wife Joyce’s credit card, that’s a tremendous achievement. Dreamstyle Remodeling’s success today belies its modest beginnings.

It employs over 500 people and has more than 60,000 customers in five states. Dreamstyle is the zenith of the perseverance and dedication Chavez has demonstrated since he enrolled at UNM in the mid-1960s. Perhaps his work ethic sprang from the fact that his high-school grades weren’t up to the mark, and UNM initially denied him admission. “I was devastated,” Chavez recalled. “I went to the admissions office and guaranteed them Joyce Hitchner and Larry Chavez Larry Chavez

I’d do better. A few days later, I got a letter saying I had been admitted under academic probation.” Chavez didn’t squander that chance. “Somebody trusted me and believed in me,” he said. “If they hadn’t, who knows? I was grateful to be admitted and did very well from the beginning. I was on the Dean’s List regularly, took a concentration in accounting, and passed all four sections of the CPA exam, which was pretty rare.” After working for an international CPA firm for several years, Chavez decided to become an entrepreneur. When he launched Dreamstyle, “It was a major struggle. I had no employees, no credit, and no money.” After a few years, however, business was on the upswing. The company’s turning point happened about 11 years ago, when it became a dealer for Andersen Windows and Doors.

New Mexico as possible. Eventually, Chavez began picturing Dreamstyle’s name on The Pit. Dreamstyle had already made an impact on the Lobos by contributing to the renovation of the football facilities. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to have sold sodas there as a teenager and then wind up getting my company’s name on the stadium?’” he said. In early spring of 2017, that dream became real. The football stadium has been rechristened Dreamstyle Stadium; the basketball arena, Dreamstyle Arena –The Pit. “This truly is historic for our department and for the University,” said Paul Krebs, former UNM vice president for Athletics, who retired this past June. “Larry Chavez and Dreamstyle have been wonderful members of our community for many years. Larry has a deep love for his university and Lobo Athletics, and this agreement not only benefits our department, but also other areas. I’m very thankful for Larry’s generosity and friendship.” Chavez didn’t want to stop at the Athletics Department, however. Per the terms of the agreement, $1 million will be distributed between UNM Children’s Hospital, the Anderson School of Management, and Popejoy Hall. “We also wanted to help other

areas of the University, so we chose three additional departments, and we hope to add more in the future.” Chavez is quick to emphasize that it’s an enthusiastic group effort that makes Dreamstyle successful. “I may be the sole stockholder,” he said, “but there are 500

others who have invested their careers in this company, and I want to make sure they get a good return, that they are happy and productive.” An inductee into the Anderson School of Management Hall of Fame, Chavez is also a mentor at Stanford University’s Latino Entrepreneurship Leadership Program; he also serves on the Steering Committee for the Joint Center for Housing Studies’ Remodeling Futures Program at Harvard University. He hopes his recent major gift to UNM will inspire other businesses to do the same. “We have built a great business that has earned the trust and confidence of our customers through the hard work and dedication of our employees, and we intend to continue that for generations,” he said. “All our employees are very proud of this

EW MEXICO ENCHANTED Antoine Predock and Constance DeJong long before they met and their lives entwined. Each vividly recalls traveling along Route 66 and traversing Tijeras Canyon’s dramatic portal, where mountains flow into a westward expanse of land and sky. “I’d never seen mountains like this before,” exclaimed Predock. “For me, it’s where the West starts.” DeJong added, “It was a spectacular gateway.” Predock drove his old Plymouth from Missouri in 1954 to begin his freshman year at UNM; California native and budding sculptor DeJong arrived to pursue the first of two master’s degrees in 1973. Their lives and work have since been inspired by the high desert environment and cultural resonance here. Widely renowned, and esteemed by peers and professional organizations for their many years of creative mastery in architecture and sculpture respectively, Predock and DeJong are honoring their deep connections to New Mexico with two significant gifts to the University. UNM’s Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections in Zimmerman Library is receiving Predock’s archives, a massive compendium incorporating sketches and drawings, designs and blueprints, competition proposals, correspondence, photos and Constance DeJong and Antoine Predock posters. According to Tomas Jaehn, the Center’s director, this archival collection will be preserved for students, faculty, architects and researchers, and designed to last for centuries. “This is essentially his life’s work, and there are amazing projects here,” said Jaehn, “including the San Diego Padres ballpark, the University of Wyoming

American Heritage Center, the UNM School of Architecture’s Pearl Hall, all his international work— projects that have been built, and those that never were. We are honored that he is allowing us to have this collection.” Predock’s work also includes many three-dimensional models, ranging in size and complexity. A lifelong motorcyle enthusiast, Antoine DeJong addressed the conundrum Predock has acquired a remarkable collection. of conserving them, and placing them in a meaningful way, with an exceptional gift to the UNM School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P); Predock’s Albuquerque compound near downtown will become The Antoine Predock Center for Design and Research. “I’m happy that this building, this home, this studio, everything that has been functioning for so many decades will live on,” DeJong stated. Architecture can be a 24-hour daily discipline, and the place itself is imbued with the vibrant intensity of its history as a professional center of creation and fabrication. SA+P Dean Geraldine Forbes Isais is excited by the potential for advanced student experiences and instruction, and rotating displays of Predock’s work. “This will honor Antoine Predock’s legacy, and the legacy of the School,” she noted. “We intend to make the Predock Center the best it can be for our students, the community, and those who believe that architecture, culture and design nurture the soul and elevate society.” DeJong and Predock have been together for more than a quarter century. They share a deep interest in form, structure and light. DeJong’s metal sculptures range from monumental to intimate scale. She teaches at the UNM College of Fine Arts, and her work hangs in galleries, museums and private collections. Predock actually completed his degree at Columbia University in New York and traveled the world to gain insights. Yet New Mexico always beckoned, and he always returned; the atmosphere, geology and antiquity honed his approach to architecture, from Albuquerque to Asia and beyond. His firm now maintains headquarters here, and in California and Taiwan. Predock uses the term “site specificity” to refer to the way he designs buildings, relentlessly researching history, landforms, climate and culture in the process. His innovative design of the first La Luz residential development on Albuquerque’s

West Side in the 1970s—clustering the units, preserving natural landscape, and providing magnificent views of the Sandia Mountains—was radical at the time, but true to his philosophy. “New Mexico taught me how to be an architect,” he stated. “Architecture has to defend against this place in so many ways. Dust storms, prevailing winds, the assault of the sun from the west —a whole inventory you have to pay attention to and figure out. So I call myself a portable regionalist, because wherever I go, it’s in me to think about site that way.” Reflecting on their decisions to entrust the University with their gifts, DeJong remarked, “There were other institutions interested in his archive, but he decided to go with UNM, which I thought was great.” “It’s where I started,” Predock declared. “New Mexico is my spiritual home. All the clichés, like how it hooks you, apply to me.” He smiled. “So where the hell else could the archive go?”

Rayburn, the fund’s concept of “reaching up” has roots in his 1920s childhood, on a small farm in the Appalachian region of Kentucky. Rayburn’s mother died when he was 14, shortly after enrolling him in a high school level class at Berea College, an innovative tuition-free institution. “Berea became my home,” Rayburn said. Her parents, Anne and Jason Davis, understand all the fuss. They just

wish that Emma held court somewhere other than a medical facility. But for a child with leukemia like Emma, UNM Children’s Hospital becomes another caring home. In January 2016, Emma was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic

During chemotherapy, the Child Life program at UNM Children’s Hospital tended to Emma’s emotional health. The New Horizons Society

T

H E U N IVE RSIT Y OF N E W M E XICO FOUNDATION created the New Horizons Society (NHS) to recognize individuals and families who have included The University of New Mexico in their estate plans. Members are honored at an annual lunch that celebrates the impact of estate gifts on University programs, students and faculty. If you name the UNM Foundation as the beneficiary of an estate gift of any size, we want to welcome you as a New Horizons Society member. Estate gifts include a provision in a will or trust, a beneficiary designation (on a bank account, retirement plan or life insurance policy), or any arrangement providing lifetime income to the donor. Members of Lobo Legacy or Forever Lobo Society, a planned giving program for UNM Athletics, are indicated by a i in the NHS member listing. For more information, please contact Associate Vice President of Planned Giving Bonnie McLeskey at Bonnie.McLeskey@unmfund.org or (505) 313-7610.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM NM’S PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM provides premium scholarships to some of UNM’s most talented students.

Since 1976, more than 4,300 Presidential Scholars have attended UNM. One recent senior, Elijah Hook, told us, “It is such a gift to be able to leave my undergraduate program debt free.” Another, Alexis Partsch, said, “I really appreciate the sponsors of my scholarship and the significant impact that they have had on my life. I am looking to my future with great joy.” An annual gift of $2,600 sponsors a Presidential Scholar, which contributes towards an $8,600 scholarship award. Endowing a Presidential Scholarship requires a minimum $50,000 gift. A PSP designation O in this report identifies individual and corporate sponsors during FY 2016-2017. For more information, please contact Associate Director of Annual Giving Cathy Bunch at Cathy.Bunch@ unmfund.org or (505) 313-7679.

Private support makes a significant difference in the quality of our students’ experience both inside and outside the classroom at The University of New Mexico. The UNM Office of Annual Giving oversees programs to engage alumni and friends of The University of New Mexico.

UNM PRESIDENT’S CLUB

T

HE UNM PRESIDENT’S CLUB is a philanthropic bridge between The University of New Mexico and our community. Comprised of distinguished

alumni, friends and community leaders who join together to support UNM’s key initiatives, this group of influential donors is committed to the success of our students, and they make it possible for us to seize great opportunities as they arise. Donations to the President’s Club have played a key role in the success of programs such as the Freshman Learning Communities, which led to dramatic improvements in the success rates of first-year students. Recently, the focus of the President's Club has been to help promote the Innovation Academy (the academic component of Innovate ABQ), allowing students the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial projects while enrolled at UNM. Equally as important as program support, President’s Club funds give UNM the ability to be responsive to student needs. One example is the Stay-A-Lobo Fund, which provides emergency grants to keep students from withdrawing from programs or discontinuing studies for financial reasons. With gifts to the President’s Club Fund, donors become partners in supporting core priorities. The designation A in this report identifies President’s Club members during FY 2016-2017. For more information, please contact Raquel LeCesne at Raquel.LeCesne@ unmfund.org or (505) 313-7669.
