REBEL OUTLOOK Following two years of recruiting and building the UNLV track and field team, head coach Yvonne Scott believes that year three of her tenure should reap the benefits of those efforts, as the Rebels will look to make a climb in the Mountain West Conference in 2010. In her two seasons at the helm, Scott has mentored studentathletes who have set three school records, been named All-MWC 12 times, while the 4x100 meter relay team advanced to the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships and two individuals advanced to the 2009 national outdoor meet. And now Scott has begun to assemble the necessary depth in all events to score points across the board and have the Rebels climbing in the standings come the conference championship meets. “Our goal is to climb in our overall conference finish and to be in the top half,” Scott said. “We have the talent and Sc the depth to make that happen this year. As we continue to get stronger ye our ultimate goal is to be contenders ou for conference championships.” Scott and her assistants Tamara Ards and Tony Houchin welcome Ar back 23 student-athletes, including ba a pair of school record breakers in Amanda Bingson and Candise MaxAm well. That group will be joined by 19 we newcomers, several of which will be ne expected to step in and contribute ex right away in their rookie season with rig the Rebels. “We have a great group of athletes this year and we are going into let Senior Candise Maxwell the season with the goal to qualify athletes to the NCAA West Regional meet,” Scott said. “Hopefully from there, several of them them will then advance to the NCAA championships. Every year our goal is to be better than the year before and we will continue to work towards that.” REBELS ON THE TRACK The strength of this year’s Rebel squad will once again be the sprint group, which also includes the hurdlers, and the star should be Maxwell. The former junior-college transfer scored points at both the indoor and outdoor league meets, and she broke the school record in the indoor 60-meter hurdles with a blistering 8.42 at the MWC championships. The super senior will be looking to once again qualify for the NCAA Outdoor championships, with the intent of scoring points at this year’s national meet. Shahnel Woodley should be a factor in both the 100 and 200 meters this year after cruising to fifth-place finishes in both events last year at the MWC championships. Chauncey David-Jacobs, a senior who missed last year due to an injury, should be a point scorer in the sprints, as should freshman Emily Blok. Senior sprinter De’Lace Kelley, and sophomores Zadia Bryant and Lindsay Roach could all run legs on relay teams as well. Another point scorer for the Rebels will be sophomore hurdler Christine Lowe, who advanced to the NCAA West Regional as a freshman in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior hurdlers Rachael Long and Meia Tezeno, as well as junior Allyson Stone, could also emerge as contributors for the Scarlet and Gray in 2010. “We will have a strong sprints and hurdles group with several strong conference scorers returning,” Scott said. “We will have several options for the relay teams and the competition will be good among the team.”

The distance runners will be have a lot l of new faces on the track and Scott Sc said she will look to the leadership sh of senior Bailey Kuestermeyer in both the 5k and 10k this season. Kuestermeyer, a multi-sport athlete Ku who wh also has run cross country and competed on the swim team for the co Rebels, finished in the top 10 in the Re 1,500 meters at last year’s MWC 1,5 Outdoor championships. Junior Ou college transfer Sarah Muniz will co compete in the steeplechase while co a group of freshmen that includes Courtney Allen, Ali Motor, Lauren Co Petersen and Kelsey Williams will Pe Sophomore Amanda Bingson have an impact in the middle-distance events. “With so many newcomers we are going to look to Bailey Kuestermeyer for leadership,” Scott said. “There should be a lot of depth in the middle and long distance events, and that group should improve as the season goes on.” REBELS IN THE FIELD With three more years of eligibility remaining, Bingson figures to rewrite a lot of the Rebel throwing records and the Las Vegas native already has one to her credit after shattering the hammer throw mark at the league championships. LaShante’ Ellison and Danielle Rios return to the throws group, as does Leah Maurer, who threw the javelin last year and is also a member of the Rebel volleyball team. A rookie to follow this year is freshman Adrianna Oliva, who should make an immediate impact in both the shot put and discus. “Amanda Bingson will be the one to watch in the hammer,” Scott said. “We are hoping to get more points out of this group as we work toward balancing our team.” Sophomore jumper Deja Edwards looked strong in fall work outs and should score points for the Rebels in the long and triple jumps this season, and could move her way into the top 10 at the conference meets. Senior multievent athlete Talyah Polee will compete in the long jump and heptathlon Senior Talyah Polee and should score points in both events, while junior college transfer Davina Collins could step in right away and perform well. w “Deja Edwards has looked very good heading into the season and Talyah will have the chance to score points in a couple events,” Scott said. “We will use our best ha athletes to score as many points as possible and could use them in the heptathlon.” at REBEL SCHEDULE UNLV will compete in four regular-season indoor meets and up to nine outdoor meets, including opening up the outdoor slate by hosting the UNLV Track Classic on m March 6 at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field. The MWC Indoor ChamM pionships are Feb. 26-27 in Albuquerque, N.M., and the league will be back there for the pi outdoor meet on May 12-15. Yvonne Scott Head Coach Third Year

One of the top up-and-coming coaches in the region, Yvonne Scott was hired as the fourth head coach in UNLV track and field history on July 20, 2007. Given the task of turning around the Rebel program, Scott is in her first head coaching position after spending five years as an assistant at Long Beach State and Sacramento State. “I am very excited about the opportunity to lead a team that has the potential of being a strong force in the Mountain West Conference,” Scott said when she was hired. “I intend to work hard to bring Rebel track and field back to what it is capable of.” In her first season at the helm, Scott helped mentor a 4x100 relay team that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships, giving the Rebels a representative at the national meet for the first time since 2006. She followed that by coaching a pair of individuals who qualified for the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 200 meters and the 100-meter hurdles. In addition, 12 new marks have been added to the UNLV top-five performance board and a trio of student-athletes have earned All-MWC honors in Scott's first two years at the helm of the program. Scott oversaw the sprinters and hurdlers at Long Beach State and turned in unparalleled success at the school. While at Long Beach State she mentored student-athletes who earned All-Big West honors 29 times and broke 10 school records.

"Yvonne has done a great job of stabilizing the program and is beginning to rebuild it," UNLV Associate Athletics Director Terry Cottle said. "She is a tireless worker and the future of Rebel track is very bright with her and her staff." Scott started her coaching career at Sacramento State as an assistant from 1999-2001, supervising the Hornets’ sprinters and hurdlers. The two-time Olympian entered coaching following a stellar career on the track. She was a member of the Japanese National Program from 1996-2004, qualifying for the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta and then the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 100-meter hurdles, where she reached the semifinals. She was an eight-time Japanese National Champion, winning the 100-meter hurdles six consecutive years from 1995-2000, and then again in 2002 and 2003. She is the Japanese national record holder in both the 60- and 100-meter hurdles. As a student-athlete at the University of Colorado, she earned All-America honors in 1996 and was a three-time Big Eight Champion in the 100-meter hurdles. In 1996 she set the school record in the 100-meter hurdles (12.98) and recorded the second-fastest time in the 100 meters (11.68) on her way to becoming an All-American. Scott earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in ethnic studies from Colorado in 1996. She has a son, Jordan.

Sprints and Jumps Third Year

Tamara Ards enters her third year with the UNLV track and field program and she focuses on all horizontal and vertical jumps, the combined event athletes and the 400-meter group. She is also the recruiting coordinator for the Rebels. Ards joined the UNLV staff after serving as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan where she worked primarily with the women’s sprints, jumps, hurdles and multi-event athletes as well as handling recruiting efforts. Prior to working at EMU she was the track and field coordinator at Louisiana State University during the 2005-06 campaign, where she was responsible for all facets of the track department’s recruiting efforts, fundraising, travel arrangements and meet management. “Coach Ards is everything I am looking for in an assistant coach,” UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams said. “She is a great coach, recruiter and role model for student-athletes. Her dedication and commitment to excellence is unquestionable and I am confident that with her assistance we will take UNLV track and field to another level.” Scott-Williams and Ards know each other quite well, as they were teammates at the University of Colorado for four years, with the pair helping the Buffaloes win the Big 8 Conference championship in 1996. Ards spent four years on the Colorado track and field coaching staff (2002-05), working with both the men’s and women’s programs. While at CU she coached primarily the men's and women's sprints and hurdles. During the 2003 season Ards coached freshmen AK Ikuwakor to an NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdlers with a time of 51.99. During the 2004 season, she coached Deneeka Torrey to NCAA qualifying times of 13.42 in the 100-meter hurdles and 8.42 in the 60-meter hurdles. In 2005 her men's 4x400-meter relay ran the fifth-fastest time in CU's history with a time of 3:08.86, earning a spot in the NCAA regional meet. In 2006 she was a part of the staff at LSU, primarily serving as the Track Coordinator, handling all business operations for the track program. On the track, Coach Ards had the opportunity to be mentored by jumps coach Boo Schexnayder as well as head coach Dennis Shaver in the sprint events. That year she was able to witness the training plan that enabled LSU sophomore Xavier Carter become the first person in NCAA history to win the 100 and 400 meters at the NCAA Championships. That year both men's and women's teams won the NCAA mideast regional team titles, sending 18 athletes to the NCAA Championships meet that year. Ards earned All-America honors on the 1600-meter relay team in 1996 and was also a Big 8 Academic All-American four times (1992-95). Ards still holds the school record in the 400 meters and was the team captain from 1992-96. Ards is a Level II certified coach in the areas of the jumps, sprints and hurdles and the combined events. This year she also became a USATF Level I Certified Instructor. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1995 and spent seven years in that field before entering coaching in 2002 at her alma mater.

Tony Houchin enters his fourth year with UNLV and he serves as the cross country coach while also working with the distance runners on the track and field team. Houchin has had a strong influence on the Rebel cross country program already, as in his four season the team ahs finished in seventh place at the 2007 and 2008 MWC Championships, the team's best finishes since 2000. Houchin helped mentor Charlotte Browning, who finished sixth overall at the 2007 league meet to earn All-MWC honors, and it was the highest finish by a Rebel harrier since 2000, when Katie Barto finished fifth. As a distance coach for the track and field team, Houchin has seen eight times added to the Rebel All-Time Top Performances in the distance events in indoor and outdoor track. Browning won the 1,500 meters at the 2008 MWC Outdoor Championships, earning MWC Freshman of the Year honors, and she would go on to earn NCAA All-West Region honors as well. Houchin came to UNLV from McNeese State where in his only year in Lake Charles, LA, he coached two conference champions, one regional qualifier and nine all-conference athletes. His men's cross country team finished third at the 2005 Southland Conference Championships where he had a runner finish in second place individually. During the indoor track season Houchin coached McNeese's only Southland Conference champion, the men's distance medley relay team. In the outdoor season he coached the 2005 Southland Conference champion in the men's 3,000 steeplechase, who then went on to compete at the NCAA Regional meet. "Tony and I have the same expectation level for the vision of this program and where we want it to go," UNLV head coach Yvonne ScottWilliams said. "He is the head cross country coach and I am the head track and field coach and we are putting it all together." Prior to Houchin's time at McNeese, he was on staff at Butler University and helped guide the men's cross country team to a fourthplace finished at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships. During that season he coached Olly Laws to All-America honors as he finished 19th overall at the championships. Also, the women's team finished 31st at the national championships while making its first-ever appearance at the NCAA meet. In the 2005 track and field season at Butler, he coached Victoria Mitchell, who won the NCAA National Championship in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Butler had four conference cross country championship teams and four individual conference champions during Houchin's two-year tenure with the Bulldogs. Houchin ran track and field for Oklahoma State from 1994-97, earning three All-Big 8 honors for the Cowboys. He earned his B.A. in English from Oklahoma State in 1999. He married the former Mary Duerbeck on July 14, 2007, in Las Vegas.

SEASON IN REVIEW UNLV track and field saw marked improvement and progress under second-year head coach Yvonne Scott, with several new marks added to the school’s top five list, two Rebel records being broken and a pair of athletes advancing to the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Scott watched as senior Lekeisha Lawson and junior Candise Maxwell put together strong outdoor seasons that culminated with both advancing to the national meet, while Maxwell and freshman Amanda Bingson each set school records. Lawson started the indoor season with second-place finishes in the 60 and 200 meters, and that is how she would end the year at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships. She carried that momentum into the outdoor season, winning the 100 meters at two different meets and posting a total of 12 top-10 finishes throughout the year, cementing her as one of the top sprinters in recent Rebel history. Maxwell set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles at the MWC Indoor championships with a blistering time of 8.42, while Bingson and Olivia Raya posted the second and third best marks in school history in the weight throw. UNLV took care of business in the classroom as well, as 10 student-athletes were named to the 2009 Spring Academic All-MWC team, including Raya, who was a four-time selection. While Raya was the only repeat selection, the 10 Rebels on the team marked the second-most student-athletes on the Academic All-MWC squad in program history. The first-time selections included Zadia Bryant, Chauncey David-Jacobs, Deja Edwards, Christine Lowe, Lindsay Roach, Claire Schreiner, Jennifer Shearer, Isabelle Stoate and Shahnel Woodley. INDOOR POSTSEASON Lawson led the way for the Rebels at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships, which were held in Colorado Springs at the end of February. The speedster set personal records in both the 60 and 200 meters, coming in second in each event with respective times of 7.42 and 24.18. The time in the 60 meters was the third fastest in school history, and combined with her running a leg on the 4x100 relay team that took fifth, she played a part in 20 of UNLV’s 36 points as the team finished eighth overall. In the 60-meter hurdles Maxwell and Meia Tezeno had third and fifth place finishes respectively. Maxwell's clocked her record-breaking time of 8.42 and Tezeno posted a time of 8.69. UNLV's relay team which consisted of Lawson, Lowe, Roach and Tezeno took fifth place with a time of 3:56.35. OUTDOOR POSTSEASON Lawson again was the story for the Rebels at the 2009 MWC Outdoor Championships, as she posted two of the Rebels’ eight top-10 finishes on the track in helping her squad to an eighth-place finish with 53 points at the meet, which was held at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie, Wyo. She turned in times of 11.55 in the 100 meters and 23.48 in the 200 meters to finish second in each event, and the time in the 200 was an NCAA West Regional qualifying mark. Woodley competed in both events as well, finishing fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.78 and fifth in the 200 with a time of 24.05. Candise Maxwell added a third place in the 100-meter hurdles (13.55) and Lowe finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 60.49. The relay teams performed well, with the 4x100 meter squad taking second with a time of 45.23 and the 4x400 team placing fifth with TERRANCE WALSH MEMORIAL A WARD a time of 3:46.72. McDANIELS ENTERS UNLV ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME The first coach to be elected to the hall since 2004, longtime men's and women's track and field head man Al McDaniels (1975-92) forged some of the most successful results of any UNLV sport. Having joined UNLV in 1970 as an assistant track and football coach, he was elevated to head coach of both the men's and women's programs in 1975 (the Rebel men's track program was dropped in the early 1980s). He guided his women's squads to five Big West Conference championships and produced more than 60 individual champions and 40 All-Americans. He produced two NCAA Champions: 1984 heptathlon winner Sheila Tarr and 1987 1,000-meter indoor champ Trena Hull, while six Lady Rebels were named BWC Athlete of the Year under his watch. Named conference coach of the year four times, McDaniels saw his women's teams earn four top-25 national indoor finishes and two outdoor efforts, including a program-best sixth at the 1992 NCAA event. A graduate of Nevada, Reno, McDaniels earned his master's degree from UNLV and has taught at the school for many years, including serving as the Director of Physical Education Activities from 1998-2004.

COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the everchanging landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 11th season of competition in 2009-10, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for MWC institutions and student athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Progressive in its approach, the MWC has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. He has been instrumental in negotiating nearly $230 million in television revenue, directed the league through expansion and has been an innovator in the postseason bowl structure as MWC teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and Comcast to become the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its nine athletic programs. Thompson has been instrumental in strengthening the position of the Mountain West in the current Bowl Championship Series (BCS) structure. In 2006, he spearheaded an effort that resulted in better access for the MWC and more than doubled the annual BCS revenue on an annual basis for nonautomatic-qualifying conferences. The MWC has been steadfast in its efforts to find a way to make the BCS system fair for all universities. Through its first 10 years of competition, the MWC has participated in 36 bowl games. In 2007, the MWC posted the best winning percentage among the 11 conferences that make up the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and claimed the 2007-08 ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup for the second time in four years. The MWC has sent a record five teams into postseason action both of the last two seasons (2007-08) and over the past five campaigns boasts the best winning percentage in bowl games among FBS conferences. Prior to his current role, Thompson served as the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for nearly eight years and as the only commissioner of the American South Conference prior to the merger of the two leagues in 1991. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. He and his wife, Carla, have a son, Ted, and a daughter, Emma.

BIRTH OF A CONFERENCE The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team WAC re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s nine members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and TCU began its first year of competition in 2005-06, completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. The Colorado Springs-based league is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Utah, BYU, Air Force and Colorado State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s newest member, TCU.

FACILITIES HOME OF THE REBELS

On April 3, 1998, UNLV unveiled Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila TarrSmith Field, the home for the Rebel track and field program. A partnership between Clark County and the UNLV Board of Regents paved the way for the $1.6 million facility. In a cooperative effort, the area occupied by the old Myron Partridge Stadium was cleared for the relocation of Paradise Elementary School and the new stadium was built on campus, just west of the Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium. The facility was officially opened in the spring of 2000 prior to the UNLV Invitational. A dedication ceremony was held at the grand opening, naming the field, Sheila Tarr-Smith Field, in honor of the former Rebel NCAA Champion in the heptathlon, who passed away in the fall of 1998. The track, designed locally by Martin & Martin, features ISS 2000, a state-of-the-art polyurethane surface that stores and releases energy applied by the athlete. It is considered the most responsive and longest-lasting surface available and is used in most of the top track facilities in the country. Nine 48-inch lanes circle the track, a significant improvement over the eight 42-inch lanes on the old track. A steeplechase bar and pit complete the multiMyron Partridge Stadium / use track. Sheila Tarr-Smith Field Records The field, also newly constructed, has a natural grass surface. FACILITIES Myron Partridge Even 30 years after his death, Myron Partridge is still one of the most highly respected and beloved sports officials in Southern Nevada. To carry on the memory of his service to the Las Vegas community, UNLV honored the late official by naming its track and field facility after him. The original track was dedicated to Partridge in 1981, two years after his death. When plans were announced to replace the school’s existing track with a new facility in 1998, it was determined that the Partridge name would also move with the track. “He did a lot, not only for this program, but for the entire Las Vegas sports community,” said former UNLV track and field head coach Al McDaniel. “He had such a rich history of helping organize fair competition for the local youth and teaching them to compete by the rules.” Partridge, a Fowlerton, Indiana native, was a multi-career man who originally came to the Las Vegas Valley in 1950 to take a job with the Clark County School District as a coordinator of a new job training and work experience program. At the time, he also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and had been a football, basketball, baseball and track and field official since his college days. He attended Adrian College, a Division III school in Michigan. His high school basketball coach would not let players play who did not know the rules of the game. By the time Partridge had advanced to the college level, his expertise and knowledge of the game were frequently called upon. As a student in the early 1930s, he began regularly officiating games for supplemental income. An accomplished athlete, Partridge also served as the cross country and track and field coach for Adrian, leading the squad to a conference title. By the mid-1930s, Partridge had organized the first Michigan officials association to help study and train local umpires and referees during a time when not even major college conferences had such systems in place. He began his career in the U.S. Navy at the turn of the decade with the coming of World War II, running a division at sea as a lieutenant junior grade. He continued to serve in the Navy in some capacity until his retirement in 1970. Following the war, he moved around before accepting his position with the CCSD in Las Vegas. He soon became a basketball referee and baseball umpire in the area, working games from Barstow, California, to St. George, Utah. It was not long before Partridge joined with a couple of other local volunteers to form the Southern Nevada Officials Association. In 1977, Partridge announced a second retirement, this one from the CCSD following 27 years of service. However, he could not bring himself to abandon his third and favorite career, a sports official. He was affectionately referred to as the “Dean of Umpires.” Among the many projects undertaken by Partridge, he organized a community soccer program and high school track and field competitions, writing rules and putting together meets for the area’s youngsters. He was also the Nevada State American Softball Association Commissioner for 21 years, since the group’s inception. Just before his death in 1979, he was nominated as a track and field official for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.

Sheila Tarr-Smith Hall of Famer. All-American. Local Hero. All of these labels and more fit former UNLV track and field star Sheila Tarr Smith, who died August 15, 1998, at the age of 34 from a rare neurological disorder. “It was a tragic loss with her premature death,” Former head coach Karen Dennis said. “She’s always going to be remembered in our program.” Dennis’ statement was solidified in the spring of 1999 when UNLV named the field at its new track and field facility after the fallen champion during the stadium’s dedication ceremony. Tarr-Smith was UNLV’s first-ever national champion, capturing the 1984 NCAA heptathlon crown. She also finished second at the NCAA Championships the following year and took 11th at the 1984 Olympic Trials. During her career, Tarr-Smith broke school records in the indoor shot put (47-3.75), the indoor pentathlon (3,867) the outdoor shot put (49-1.5), the javelin (153-8) and the heptathlon (5,856). Her marks in the shot put and heptathlon were also conference records, and she posted the best shot put mark for a heptathlete in NCAA history. She won back-to-back Pacific Coast Athletic Association Athlete of the Year awards for her performances at the NCAA Championships, and she was named the Terrance Walsh Memorial Award winner as the Rebels’ Most Valuable Player in 1985. “Sheila came into the office one day, and I didn’t even know who she was,” recalled Dennis. “I knew her from reading old media guides and seeing her name scattered through the record books. When she told me who she was, I felt like a legend had just walked in.” And one had. At the time, Tarr-Smith still held a number of school and conference records. The two-time All-American entered not in one, but two halls of fame in 1997. Along with Randall Cunningham and Matt Williams, she was elected to the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame in perhaps the most recognized class in the school history. She was also chosen that year to the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame. “Sheila was one of the greatest we’ve had here at UNLV,” says Al McDaniel, the former Rebel head coach who recruited Tarr-Smith. “She was a hurdler at Bonanza High School and did some jumps and throws. I took one look at her and said ‘She’s a heptathlete!’ We recruited her immediately and with her work ethic, she just excelled.” A Las Vegas native, Tarr-Smith was also a pillar of the community. She put the strength and endurance she learned as an athlete to use as a firefighter after graduating from UNLV, saving lives and serving the public. Even after her death, TarrSmith did not stop receiving accolades. The Clark County School District has ensured that Las Vegas youngsters will know her name as Sheila R. Tarr Elementary School was unveiled in the fall of 2000.

EQUIPMENT WEAR ONLY THE BEST Now in her 15th year as assistant equipment director at UNLV, Tausha Smith handles the equipment needs for the Rebel track and field program, and she is committed to outfitting players to be both safe and stylish on the track. In addition to track and field, Smith also tackles the equipment duties for baseball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s golf and volleyball. She is a Tausha Smith Assistant Equipment Director UNLV graduate, earning her undergraduate degree in recreation in 1997 and her masters in education in 1999. Like many of the UNLV athletic department’s support systems, the Rebels’ equipment operations became bigger and better in 1996 when they were moved to the new Lied Athletic Complex. The 10,000-square-foot, two-sided equipment room gives all 17 UNLV sports the services of an immense facility designed with the student-athlete in mind. In one of 19 team and staff locker rooms, players and coaches can simply drop off their uniforms at the end of a practice or competition. The next day a clean version will be waiting for pickup in personally assigned lockers located in a wall surrounding the equipment room. The days of sending out used game jerseys are now over as well. The addition of four 120-pound washers and six 175pound dryers has cut laundry time in half.

Ever since its first classroom opened in 1957, UNLV has been on the rise in the world of higher education. From dusty lots with only a few buildings to a lush, everexpanding setting, the campus has continued to respond to the demands stemming from an increasing enrollment. The University boasts nationally competitive business programs and a school of hotel administration that attracts students from around the globe. But with more Kim Underwood than 227 degree programs in 14 colleges Academic Advisor and one school of law, UNLV offers the student-athlete an array of educational opportunities. UNLV maintains an academic support system for its student-athletes that is designed to ensure success on and off the fields of play. Housed in the Flora Dungan Humanities Building, academic advisors work with the 17 men's and women's varsity ensuring student-athletes receive personalized care regarding their progress in education. Advisors work with their sport-specific student-athletes in scheduling, tutoring, degree progress and NCAA eligibility. Providing even greater challenges, students who maintain a 3.5 grade point average can apply for entrance into UNLV's honors program. The UNLV track and field program had a total 10 studentathletics make the academic All-MWC list, the second-highest total on the league list in program history. Highlightling the list was Olivia Raya, who made the team for a fourth consecutive year. Academic advising for the UNLV track and field is the responsibility of academic advisor Kim Underwood.

ATHLETIC TRAINING/ STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

POWER BEHIND THE PROGRAM UNLV's strength and conditioning program is geared toward developing student-athletes' athletic potential through a personalized program that includes strength, speed, flexibility, conditioning and nutrition. Benefitting from an individualized conditioning regimen implemented by a staff of five strength coaches, Rebel players follow a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power, speed and plyometrics. The strength and conditioning staff is responsible for the year-round training of men and women student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports. The strength and conditioning development for women's track is the responsibility of Jodi Sabataso. Complete with three offices, two restrooms and storage, the 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms. UNLV's facility houses more than 60 weight stations and Hammer Strength Machines. The 1,200-square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic area catered to each sport. The room also features a premium sound system to further enhance the workout experience.

The Marilyn & Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex sprawls over an 8,500-square-foot area.

Day-to-day preventative medicine on the campus was made easier with the opening of the Marilyn and Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex. The stateof-the-art operation is a major part of the $8.5 million Lied Athletic facility, which opened in 1996. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the Lied Athletic Complex. Other amenities include a physician's office and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the new complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV's academic program and its student athletic trainers benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. "Aside from being four times larger than our former facility," says Kyle Wilson, UNLV's Director of Athletic Training. "This is one of the top complexes in the nation because of the versatility it offers to service student-athletes in every area of sports medicine. We're now more efficient, more accessible and more effective in preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries."

These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. r. Neal J. Smatresk was named President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. Since 2007, he had served as Executive Vice President and Provost, where he was responsible for leadership and administration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. Dr. Smatresk received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as Chair of Biology and later Dean of Science, until his appointment as the chief academic officer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his tenure, the University of Hawaii at Manoa entered the ranks of the top 25 federally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from

the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Dr. Smatresk has received a number of teaching awards, and his research in cardiorespiratory physiology has resulted in over 50 papers and book chapters, and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. As the chief academic officer of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dr. Smatresk has led the efforts to forge a new strategic plan that commits to improving educational access and success for its diverse students, to provide regionally responsive research growth for the improvement and diversification of the Southern Nevada economic base, and to supply critically needed services for this rapidly growing region. In addition to his teaching and administrative roles, Smatresk has devoted considerable effort to kindergarten to doctorate (K-20) science outreach programs and teacher professional development and has participated in a number of consortia focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career development. He has been deeply engaged in community college articulation efforts in Texas, Hawaii and now in Nevada and has worked to expand educational opportunity and access for underserved populations.

ringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th fulltime Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Conference but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-athletes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fiscal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not receive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Pacific-10 Conference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Committee and Basketball Tournament Subcommittee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served five years. His work at Arizona and its extension on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A.

Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for athletic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 competitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 199697 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record reflects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Arizona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball College World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titles and the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Championships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate continued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned conference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Committee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NACDA Preseason Football Games Committee since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic Planning Committee from 1999-2001. He served as NACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender-equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a studentathlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the finest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Development and Public Relations at

Jerry Koloskie is in his 11th season as UNLV’s Senior Associate Athletics Director in 2009-10. He served as UNLV’s Interim Athletics Director from late August until Jim Livengood was named Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. A member of the athletics department for the past 26 years, Koloskie is directly responsible for overseeing all internal functions of the athletics department and serves as the sport administrator for men’s and women’s basketball, track and field, cross country and baseball. He earned his master’s in physical education from Iowa State University in 1981 and moved to UNLV in 1982 to become Co-Head Athletic Trainer and spent nine years as head athletic trainer for the Rebel football team. In 1983 he became Head Athletic Trainer for all intercollegiate athletic teams at UNLV. He and his wife, Annette, have three children: sons John and Jim, and a daughter, Megan, as well as a granddaughter, Kaydence.

BILL BRADY Associate AD/Development Bill Brady enters his fourth year as a member of UNLV’s Senior Staff serving as Associate Athletic Director for Development. Brady oversees fundraising for Rebel Athletics with a primary emphasis on major gifts. Also, he is responsible for the operation of the Rebel Athletic Fund which includes the Club Seat and Suite programs. Prior to joining the Rebels, Brady worked with current MWC member TCU as the director of the Frog Club as well as sales management roles with SFX Sports Group, Lone Star Park and the Cotton Bowl Classic. Brady earned his bachelor’s degree from Long Beach State and his master’s degree from Ohio University. He and his wife, Diana, are the parents of three boys: Cooper, Spencer and Turner.

TERRY COTTLE

Lisa Kelleher begins her 18th season as UNLV’s Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator. In her position, Kelleher provides administrative oversight to the day-to-day operations of nine of the school’s 17 varsity sports as well as various events related to the 10 women’s programs. In addition, Kelleher oversees gender equity and diversity issues, and is a member of the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame committee. A 1979 graduate of Miami (Ohio) University, Kelleher earned her master’s degree from the University of Arizona in 1980. Kelleher, a doctoral candidate in the UNLV Higher Education Leadership program, intends to defend her dissertation and graduate this year. Kelleher and her husband, Peter, have four daughters: Molly (29), Bridget (24), Megan (15) and Tara (13). Molly is married to Jeremy Dutton.

MICHAEL SEE Assistant AD/Athletics Ticketing and UNLVtickets Michael See is the newest member of the UNLV Senior Staff as Assistant Athletics Director for Athletics Ticketing and UNLVtickets. See has overseen UNLVtickets, the university’s ticketing services organization, for the past eight years, heading up all e-commerce, call center, retail outlet and regional ticket sales. See, a 1994 graduate of UNLV, brings over 20 years of ticketing experience to the UNLV Athletics Department. His experience includes helping to open the MGM Grand Garden Arena Ticket Office in 1993, and also serving as Ticketing Manager for Primadonna Resorts, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and New York, New York Hotel and Casino while also working for Tickets.com. See returned to UNLV in 2002 to design and implement the UNLVtickets Organization as its Director. He and his wife Kay have a daughter, Taylor, and a son, Benjamin.

ERIK SCHWARZ Assistant AD/Operations & Facilities

Associate AD/Football Operations Terry Cottle, 50, begins his 26th year in the UNLV Athletics Department and his ninth as an Associate Athletics Director. Cottle serves as the day-to-day administrator for the UNLV football program. A former Rebel football recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, Cottle spent 10 years with the football program before moving into an administrative capacity in 1994. A four-year starter at quarterback at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., Cottle earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 before receiving his master’s degree in education from UNLV in 1985. Cottle and his wife, Catherine, have four children: Jessica, Ashley, Carly and Jason.

ANDY GROSSMAN Assistant AD/Media Relations and Communications Andy Grossman joined the UNLV Athletics Senior Staff this fall, as he was named Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations and Communications. Grossman enters his 14th year with UNLV Athletics and he oversees the media relations and communication efforts for the athletics department. A 1996 graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s in media arts, Grossman came to UNLV as an intern, and he was hired as assistant sports information director in 1997. In February of 2000 he left to work at Mirage Resorts, Inc., in its public relations department. He and his wife Melissa have a daughter, Hannah (9), and two sons, Jake (6), and Noah (1).

CHRISTIAN HARDIGREE Associate AD/Community Development and Special Projects Christian Hardigree joined the UNLV Senior Staff this fall and is the Associate Athletics Director for Community Development and Special Projects, where she will focus on sport specific fundraising initiatives, community marketing projects and will also assist with other special projects. Hardigree most recently served as UNLV’s Assistant President/Chief of Staff and was an associate professor and the department chair for UNLV’s Hotel Management Department in the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. Hardigree earned her bachelor’s degree from UNLV in 1993 and earned her law degree in 1996 from Mercer University. She is married to Chris Brown, and they have two children, Parker (3), and Hudson (2).

Erik Schwarz enters his fourth year as a member of the UNLV Senior Staff as Assistant Athletics Director for Operations. The 16-season veteran of UNLV athletics oversees the athletic facilities and game operations for all Rebel sports programs. Prior to joining the Senior Staff, Schwarz spent seven seasons as director of game operations for the Rebels and four working with the licensing program. A native of Bowie, Md., Schwarz is a 1993 graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in sports management. He received his master’s degree in kinesiology from UNLV in 1997. He married the former Maggie Hausbeck on June 25, 2006.

ERIC TOLIVER Associate AD/Compliance Eric Toliver, 39, enters his 18th year at UNLV and 10th year as the Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Compliance after taking over the Director of NCAA Compliance duties midway through the 1998-99 school year. A 1992 graduate of Western State College (Co.), Toliver’s responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of NCAA regulations and conducting internal and external investigations to ensure that UNLV’s 17 Division I sports, staff and coaches remain in compliance with NCAA regulations. Toliver, who is also an appointed member of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Fact- Finding Committee, is also responsible for supervision of the UNLV softball program and oversees all UNLV student-athlete conduct and discipline related matters. He also supervises the UNLV Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and serves as the chair of the institution’s Compliance Committee.

PERK WEISENBURGER Associate AD/External Operations Perk Weisenburger enters his fifth year as a member of the UNLV Senior Staff as the Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. Weisenburger oversees the coordination and operation of athletic marketing and promotions, licensing and athletic ticketing, and serves as the department’s liaison to muilti-media rights partner International Sports Properties (ISP). Prior to coming to UNLV in April of 2005, Weisenburger spent five years as the Director of Athletics at Illinois State University and previously worked administratively at Wake Forest, Central Michigan, Washington and Houston. Weisenburger is a 1979 graduate of Central Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He earned his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982. He and wife, Buffy, are the parents of two sons: Jack and Joe.

LIED ATHLETIC COMPLEX

Opened in 1996, the $8.5 million Lied Athletic Complex remains one of the nation’s premier on-campus sports facilities. The Lied, honored with Athletic Management magazine’s 1997 Award of Excellence, was exclusively funded by private donations beginning with a cornerstone gift of $4 million from the Lied Foundation Trust, through its trustee Ms. Christina Hixson, in 1993. A generous $1.5 million gift from Si and Marilyn Redd provided the Lied with a state-of-the-art sports medicine center for preventative and rehabilitative care. This 8,500-square-foot center includes a doctor’s office and examination room, a taping room, an aquatic therapy room, two additional therapy and rehabilitation areas and a self-contained drug-testing facility.

The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center features 8,500 square feet of main floor containing Olympic platforms, free weights, power racks and more than 60 weight stations. Additionally, a 1,200-square-foot balcony offers areas for plyometrics, stretching and aerobics. The Lied’s 10,000-square-foot equipment center provides studentathlete support service featuring laundry, equipment and storage. The Conrad Hilton Foundation provided funding for the Barron Hilton Auditorium located inside the Lied Athletic Complex. This 328-seat auditorium provides student-athletes with study hall facilities including individual meeting rooms for tutorial support and team meetings. Designed with all Rebel sports in mind, the Lied Athletic Complex offers every student-athlete the best possible environment to pursue their athletic and academic dreams.

One of the premier on-campus athletic and entertainment facilities in the nation, the 18,500-seat Thomas & Mack Center is primarily home to the world-famous UNLV Runninâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Rebel Basketball team. The venue, which underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in 1999 that included a new exterior look, hosted the 2007 NBA All-Star Weekend.

With seating for up to 2,000 fans, the Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex is unquestionably one of the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest and most complete collegiate tennis facilities. Opened in 1992, the complex recently underwent a $2 million upgrade.

The newest facility on campus was completed in November 2001 at a cost of $2.7 million and provides accommodations for 770 fans.

Nine 48-inch lines circle the track, complete with a steeplechase bar and pit, two pole vault pits, two high jump areas, two long jump/triple jump lanes, two shot put slabs, ample room for hammer and javelin events and seating for up to 1,000 spectators.

No less than three national championships were celebrated as part of last fall’s UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame ceremonies held on Sept. 19, 2008. Five former Rebel players (including the 17th football honoree all-time), one longtime head coach and a distinguished contributor joined two record-setting teams in being inducted. Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletic Hall of Fame will now grow to 96 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former studentathletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis. TIM BLENKIRON (1994-97) was one of the best doubles players in school history and paired up with Luke Smith to win the 1997 NCAA Doubles Championship, becoming one of six individual national champions at UNLV. The 1997 All-American was a member of three Big West Conference champion squads. JOE KRISTOSIK (1995-98) was UNLV football’s first consensus first team All-American after being a four-year starter as a punter for the Rebels. He turned in one of the best seasons at his position in college football history as a senior in 1998 while leading the nation with an average of 46.2, which was the second-highest in NCAA history for a punter with at least 75 attempts. KIM RONDINA (1994-97) was the greatest slugger in UNLV softball history and its only two-time conference MVP. She was named first team All-America in 1995 and third team in 1996 and ‘97. Helping the Rebels to three NCAA tournament appearances, including one trip the Women’s College World Series, Rondina still holds 13 single-season and career batting records. LUKE SMITH (1994-97) stands as the only multiple NCAA champion in UNLV athletics history after winning the 1997 national title in singles and doubles. A three-time All-American, he also was a 1996 NCAA Doubles Semifinalist. Smith was a member of the 1997 Davis Cup Team for his native Australia and twice reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in doubles. MARIANNE VALLIN (1994-97) becomes the first UNLV women’s tennis player to enter the hall of fame. A three-time conference MVP, she was All-American in singles three times after being named the ITA National Freshman of the Year. The winningest singles player in program history, she brought home the 1997 Gladys Heldman Award, which goes to the nation’s top women’s tennis student-athlete. The 1998 UNLV MEN’S GOLF TEAM is one of only two Rebel squads to earn a national championship as head coach Dwaine Knight’s team won the 1998 NCAA team title in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rebels shot a final-round one-over par 289 to finish at 34-under-par 1,118, which set the NCAA record for lowest total in history. The 1995 UNLV WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TEAM set or tied 30 different school team records and 17 single-season marks en route to tying the record for wins with a 49-14 record. Coached by Shan McDonald, it was the first UNLV softball squad to win an outright conference title and finished third at the Women’s College World Series. HEAD COACH AL MCDANIELS (1975-92) guided the women’s track and field program to five conference championships and produced more than 60 individual champions and 40 All-Americans. The four-time conference coach of the year produced two NCAA Champions and six league MVPs. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR DR. JAMES CALLAWAY D.D.S. is a nationally respected dentist who has been part of the Rebel family for three decades, serving as the team dentist since 1977.
