facilities PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL

The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, 4

Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31.

johann memorial field The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MW Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MW championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. The 2014 season saw an addition of 90 feet long shade structures on the North side to further enhance the fan experience, while parking was expanded as well with an extra 125 spaces. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 33rd season in 2015.

The MW Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008.

sports medicine

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Kylee Bundschuh. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Kylee Bundschuh Other amenities include a physician’s office Athletic Trainer and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility.

An aquatic therapy room includes a rehab pool.

The Marilyn & Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex sprawls over a 6,500-square-foot area.

2015 season outlook “This year the team already knows what and how we’re trying to play, we’re light years ahead of where we were last year in the fall.” There is a lot of optimism surrounding the UNLV women’s soccer team entering the 2015 season, compared to a year ago when they begin the year with their third new head coach in a four-year period. That left little time for the players to adjust to the new system under first-year head coach Chris Shaw, as the Rebels had less then three weeks of practices before playing their first game. It was a transition for the coaching staff as well. While the season did end with a third straight winning record (9-8-2), the Rebels would miss the postseason MW tournament after tying for seventh place in the conference standings. That is a finish the Rebels are determined to avoid in 2015. There are several factors leading to the hopes of an improved season, with a key one being that Shaw was able to coach during the entire spring season for the team, as he was hired after the schedule ended in the spring of 2014. With more time to implement his full system and the more experience the players gained in the spring, that should lead to a more prepared squad. “We are definitely in a much better place this fall,” said Shaw. “Anytime you bring in a new staff there’s going to be a feeling out period. We had a different system and different formations last year and anytime is going to take time to adjust to that. This year the team already knows what and how we’re trying to play, so we’re light years ahead of where we were last year in the fall preseason camp. Another advantage is the Rebels only lost one player to graduation following the season. That leaves a roster with 10 returning starters for 2015. “It’s a huge advantage to have this many returning players, they now have a comfort level with me and the comfort level they have with each other, the knowledge of how their teammates play and their tendencies on the field, that’s going to help the team perform at a higher level.” The biggest key to greater success this season is on the offense end. Scoring goals was a struggle at times during the year, including at the end of the year when UNLV managed just three goals in the final seven games. Things are already looking up for the Rebels on offense however as in addition to returning everyone up front, forward Susie Bernal, one of the top scorers on the squad, returns to the team after missing 2014 with an ACL injury. In addition to Bernal, three players that Shaw is looking at to lead the way this season are a trio of seniors, midfielder Denali Murnan, defender Samantha Weber and forward Jodi Barber. “Denali is one of the fittest, talented plaeyrs on the team and she has the ability to take over a game,” said Shaw. Murnan led the team in scoring in 2014 with 12 points (four goals, four assists) while earning Second Team All-Mountain West honors. Weber is a threeyear starter for the Rebels on the backline and is one of the team’s leaders, both on and off the field. Barber is in her second year after transferring from Barton College where she played for Shaw. “Jode has done a great job of adjusting and has a better understanding of the level of play in Division I, and we are expecting great things from here this year.”

18

Two players that could make a greater impact this year are junior forward Gaby Vazquez and sophomore midfielder Sophie Cortes. “Gaby has been fantastic in camp and has the potential to be a great contributor for us,” said Shaw. “Sophie is a good attacking midfield and her ability to run on and off the dribble along with her creativity on offense make her a strong player for us.”

FORWARDS

Shaw feels this is one of the two deepest position groups on the team, would be comfortable with playing up to six-to-eight a game. In addition to Barber, Bernal and Vazquez, the Rebels return several more with starting experience including junior Dakota Blazak and sophomore Alexis Peterson. “Dakota is a great one-on-one attacker for us,” said Shaw. “Alexis has returned to the team following a two-year mission and is in great shape and a very hard worker.” Also in the position group is junior Brittney Gideon, junior Isabelle Delgado, her second year after playing her freshman season on the backline, junior Lily Sender, a player that has made great

DEFENDERS

WEBER improvements from a season ago, and sophomore Kaila Brinkman who had an up-and-down freshman season but Shaw is seeing a more confident player coming into the current season. The Rebels have one addition to the group and its a big one, as the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year, freshman Michaela Morris (Las Vegas), will be fighting for significant playing time. “Michaela has everything you want in a forward, she is athletic, has the technical skills and as the strength, so she can beat you with her athletic ability or with her skill.” She scored 89 goals in her prep career, including 45 as a senior.

MIDFIELDERS

Shaw feels this is a group that is filled with very technical players that is also an attack orientated midfielder group at the same time. Aside from Murnan and Cortes, another leader in the midfield will be junior Hayley Wilson, who is moving up from her defensive role the past two years. She has the scoring ability, with two game-winners last year. Also in the midfield mix is: junior Courtney Anderson who will be used in a more defensive role, senior Nicole Candioglos with 17 starts in the midfield a year ago, and junior Jordan Magnin, third on the team in scoring in 2014 with seven points. New to the group in 2015 is Jesse McKenna (Thornton, Colo.), who is expected to compete for playing time.

This is another position Shaw is very happy with his depth entering the season. “We are relatively deep here, we return everyone from last year from what was already a very solid group. In addition, we bring in Hannah Alba, a transfer who started 14 games as a freshman at Louisiana so her addition is a huge advantage as well.” While Weber is the senior leader on the backline, sophomore Chidera Akubuilo made a big impact in her freshman year and is coming in with even higher expectations. Alba meanwhile took over the center back role in the spring season and Shaw is impressed with how well she and Akubuilo complement each other already. Junior Michaela Kelsey started 10 games for the Rebels a year ago and coming off a strong spring is expect to once again have a big role on the defensive side. There will be several players fighting for playing time to back the eventual four starters. Two returnees are in that mix, freshman Lindsey Dovali, moved over from a forward position, and junior Kendall Sandoval, who Shaw would not be surprised to see competing for a starting role. In addition to Alba, two more newcomers in the position are a pair of freshmen, both from Las Vegas - Raevyn Bailey and Isabella Myers.

GOALKEEPERS

While she will have to win the job again in preseason camp, sophomore Jordan Sallee is expected to once again be the Rebels’ starter after becoming the second true freshman to start a season opener for UNLV a year ago. She would go on to start all 19 games and posted a strong stat line a 1.17 GAA and 5.1 shutouts along with 63 saves. Two more goalies saw limited time last year, with sophomore Jessie Clark appearing in two games and another sophomore, Emily Casale, playing in one contest as well. The final member of the goalkeeper group is sophomore Kylie Ojers.

2014 year-in-review The Rebels faced several challenges in 2014. Most notably, the players started the year under their third coach in a four-year period, as Chris Shaw took over the helm of the program in May. With such a late start with the team, Shaw did not get a chance to start implementing his coaching style into the team until the first week of August, just three weeks before the first game of the season. Combine that with a very young team (the 2014 Rebels featured only five upperclassmen), and the end result was a team season that saw several highs and lows. UNLV entered the season having to replace several key players lost to graduation. Most notably, the Rebels lost a 21-point scorer up front in Jenn Wolfe and a four-year starting goalkeeper in Kylie Wassel. Their hopes on offense took another hit when the second-leading scorer, sophomore Susie Bernal, was lost to an ACL in the spring season and was forced to sit out the year. That void on offense would be the Rebels’ largest disadvantage in 2014, with only two players finishing with more then two goals. Junior Denali Murnan led the way with 12 points off four goals and four assists, while sophomore Dakota Blazka was next with four goals and a pair of assists for 10 points. For the season, UNLV would post 21 goals, an average of 1.11 per game. While the offense had its struggles in finding goals, the Rebels

had more success with its defense. Jordan Sallee, the secondever true freshman to start the season opener for the Rebels, notched an impressive 1.17 GAA while starting every game, and her backline helped allow just 23 total goals, along with posting six team shutouts. The season started out with a pair of home victories for the Rebels, both by a one-goal margin. UNLV opened up the Chris Shaw era with a 2-1 victory over Northern Arizona at Peter Johann Memorial Field, thanks to goals from Addy Guida and Hayley Wilson. Two days later the Rebels found themselves in a tight contest with Grand Canyon, before Isabelle Delgado scored a golden goal one minute into overtime for a 3-2 victory. The first loss of the year came at the hands of Pac-12 member Colorado, 3-0 on Aug. 29. UNLV closed out its four-game homestand with an impressive 3-0 shutout over Saint Francis. The next challenge for the Rebels would have been a tough task for any team, as it faced a September that featured only road games, six in total. It began with a trip to the Beehive State, and a pair of overtime contests. First was a tie at former Mountain West rival Utah (1-1) on Sept. 12, followed by a 1-0 setback at Utah Valley (0-1) on Sept. 14. UNLV bounced back with a trip to the Southwest, beginning with a

Dakota Blazak scored a team-high tying four goals in 2014, including this goal against Saint Francis in a 3-0 win.

The next two weekends saw split results for the Rebels. They began with a road contest at Colorado State, a 1-0 victory thanks to a penalty kick from sophomore Jordan Magnin. Next up was a game at Wyoming, who handed UNLV a 3-0 setback on Sept. 28.

The Rebels then came home for a fourgame homestand to start off the month of October. A return to their home field did not help the offense however, as it suffered back-to-back shutout losses to New Mexico and San Diego State, and that was followed by a 2-0 loss at Colorado College on Oct. 17.

While the Rebs would miss the league postseason tournament, they did post finish with a winning record for the third straight season at 9-8-2. Murnan would be honored by the Mountain West for her outstanding play during the season as she was named All-MW Second Team.

MURNAN

The scoreless streak was snapped in a 2-0 victory at Air Force, thanks to goals from senior Kristen Sankey, her first career game-winner, and Blazak. Another win followed for the Rebels with a 1-0 victory at Utah State, off a goal by Murnan. With the Mountain West Tournament taking only six teams in 2014, the Rebels entered the final two games of the season needing to win both games to ensure a spot. The first contest was a Senior Day game with Boise State, and the Rebels would come up short, falling 2-0 to Boise State on Oct. 26. That left one game left on the schedule, the annual showdown with in-state rival Nevada, Reno. A banged up Rebel squad would go on the road one last time in 2014, and despite a large shot advantage would have to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the Wolf Pack.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST

the mountain west

THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State joined the Mountain West in 2011, followed by Fresno State and Nevada, Reno in 2012. That’s the same year that the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State and Utah State joined, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members. ACHIEVEMENTS Mountain West members have participated in 69 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games and one CFP game. The MW has earned 76 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 43 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women’s basketball has tallied 67 postseason slots, including 34 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. Wyoming won the MW’s first WNIT championship in 2007 with a win over Wisconsin. In women’s volleyball, the MW has had 38 NCAA bids with nine Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Women’s soccer has earned 29 NCAA bids since 1999, with two Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Mountain West men’s golf has sent at least three teams to the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals in each of its 16 years, while women’s golf has had at least three teams participate in NCAA Regionals 13 of the last 16 years. The MW has produced 882 AllAmerica selections among its 18 sponsored sports in the last 16 years. A total of 156 MW student-athletes have also earned Academic All-America accolades in that span. The league has captured three team national championships in women’s cross country and produced 36 individual national champions. YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West teams enjoyed an outstanding year in 2014-15. In football, the MW sent a league-record seven teams to bowl games (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Reno, San Diego State and Utah State), marking the eighth consecutive year that at least five teams represented the league in postseason play. Boise State would face No. 10 Arizona in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl and topped the nationally-ranked Wildcats, 38-30. Mountain West men’s basketball regular-season co-champions San Diego State and Boise State received at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, joining MW tournament champion Wyoming who earned the league’s automatic bid. In women’s basketball, Boise State made its third NCAA tournament appearance after capturing the MW tournament crown and earning the Conference’s automatic bid. Mountain West regular-season champion Colorado State and Fresno State advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament In women’s soccer, San Diego State advanced to the NCAA tournament for the third straight year after clinching both the MW regular-season and tournament crowns.

Commissioner

Craig Thompson

Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 17th season of competition in 2015-16, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West opened its doors on Jan. 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network, Comcast and ESPN, including becoming the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. Following graduation, he spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University. He then spent three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA’s Kansas City Kings. Thompson and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 28,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. JESSUP

Len Jessup joined UNLV as its 10th president in January 2015. An accomplished leader in higher education, Jessup brings experience as a university professor, administrator, entrepreneur and fundraiser. He will lead UNLV on its path to become a high-performing, community-engaged Tier One research university. Among his top priorities is the development of a UNLV School of Medicine. Like many of UNLV’s students, Jessup was the first in his family to graduate from college. This experience informs his understanding of the crucial role universities play in transforming families and communities, and it has been a motivating factor in his career in higher education leadership. Prior to UNLV, Jessup served as dean of the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona (2011-2014), where he was also professor of entrepreneurship and innovation and the Halle Chair in Leadership. He led Eller to become a self-sustaining college with higher national rankings that robustly contributes to the state’s economic development. As a founding board member of the University of Arizona Health Network, he also contributed to the rethinking and restructuring of the university’s academic medical center. Jessup is a leading researcher in management information systems, with a focus on the use of emerging technology in higher education and business, new venture strategies, and social entrepreneurship. He was instrumental in creating the University of Arizona’s technology transfer and commercialization program, Tech Launch Arizona. He led the development and expansion of online degree and executive education programs at Arizona and helped drive similar innovations in previous positions at Washington State University (2000-2011) and Indiana University (1995-2000). During more than a decade at Washington State University, Jessup was tapped for a variety of leadership roles. As dean of the WSU College of Business, he led a complete two-year reengineering of the business program, which included university-wide Entrepreneurship and Innovation Initiative that created intra-university pipelines between colleges to make the most of new ideas. As vice president of university development and president of the WSU Foundation, he transformed the university’s fundraising efforts, helping to double overall fundraising totals and welcoming record numbers of donors to the university. A former baseball player in the highly competitive California junior college system, Jessup received his B.A. in information and

communication studies in 1983 and his MBA in 1985, both from California State University, Chico. He earned his Ph.D. in organizational behavior and management information systems from the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management in 1989, and was awarded the Outstanding Ph.D. Alumnus in 2004. Jessup resides with partner Kristi Staab, a former telecommunications industry executive who owns and operates a successful leadership and sales training and development business. Jessup has a daughter, Jamie, and a son, David.

KUNZER-MURPHY Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina Kunzer-Murphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a threeyear contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 student-athletes and their talented head coaches. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us but it’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” As UNLV’s Director of Athletics, Kunzer-Murphy made a national splash with the hire of football coach Tony Sanchez in December of 2014 and in May 2015 she announced the construction of the Anthony and Lyndy Marnell III Baseball Clubhouse, which will serve as the home for UNLV Baseball. Also under her leadership, UNLV has continued to dominate the Governor’s Series, which is an all-encompassing competition against rival Nevada, Reno, as the Rebels have won the series every year since its inception in 2012. A graduate of Valley High School, Kunzer-Murphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s

tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first

In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. She has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990. She has one son, Stephen, who is married to the former Ginny Broffitt. The couple has a son, Jackson Thomas Kunzer, born Sept. 1, 2014.

CENTER

An excellent place to play or watch tennis is right here at UNLV ... A well-run facility, with 12 courts and a great stadium setup. > Tennis legend Billie Jean King in USA TODAY, 2005

Without a doubt we have the privilege of playing in one of the nicest ballparks in the west.

hall of fame HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME

Class of 2012

Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.

FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
