FACILITIES

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, 4

Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. 2014 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The women’s soccer team reached its 50th victory on its home field in the quarterfinals of the 2005 MW Tournament and three days later won the tournament championship, the first-ever won by a UNLV squad at Johann Field, with a 1-0 overtime victory over New Mexico in the title game. The women’s team has hosted a total of four MW championships at Johann Field, and made the championship game in two of the four tournaments (2001 and 2005). With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. This season will see the addition of 90 feet long shade structures on the North side to further enhance the fan experience, while parking has been expanded as well with an extra 125 spaces. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 32nd season in 2014.

The MW Tournament has been held at UNLV in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2008.

Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. Lauren Dickey Other amenities include a physician’s office Athletic Trainer and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained. Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefit from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility. Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Lauren Dickey. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

HEAD COACH CHRIS SHAW CHRIS SHAW HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON METHODIST ‘97 Chris Shaw became the sixth head coach in program history on May 21, 2014. Shaw came to Las Vegas with a wealth of coaching experience, having spent the past 11 years coaching at the collegiate level. Most recently, he served as the head women’s soccer coach at Barton College in Wilson, N.C. Taking over a Lady Bulldog program that had posted just 12 total wins in the four previous seasons, Shaw made an immediate impact by leading the 2013 squad to a 14-5-1 mark - the second-best record in school history and the second best improvement in Division II that year as well. He guided the program to its first winning season and first Conference Carolinas Tournament appearance since 2008, and its first tournament win since 2005. For his work in turning around the program, Shaw was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Four players from the 2013 team were named AllConference Carolinas, three were selected as NSCAA All-Southeast Region, and one became just the second NCAA Division II women’s soccer All-American in Barton’s history. Prior to spending the past year at Barton, Shaw was the associate head coach at North Carolina State for a total of four seasons. Among his highlights with the Wolfpack was recruiting a pair of All-ACC Freshman players, while the 2011 squad earned a 10-8-2 mark, which was the best for the school since 2002. Shaw’s first Division I job was at current Mountain West member Fresno State, where he served as assistant coach from 2007-08, with the Bulldogs reaching the NCAA Tournament after winning the 2008 WAC championship. Shaw’s first head coaching job was also in the Conference Carolinas, guiding the University of Mount Olive from 2003 to 2007. His second year at the school set a NCAA Division II record for singleseason turnaround, finishing at 20-3 after a 3-15 mark the year before. Combined with his turnaround at Barton, Shaw is the only coach to have two difference teams on the all-time most improved record list for Division II. The 20-3 mark that season earned him conference coach of the year, while the team also led the nation in scoring offense. The Trojans won their first-ever conference championship in 2004, and finished both the 2004 and 2006 seasons

14

ranked in the 10 top in the region. Shaw finished his career at Mount Olive with a 52-34 record. Other coaching positions Shaw held include three years as an assistant men’s coach at Methodist University and a volunteer assistant role at East Carolina in the 1995 season. He has been heavily involved on the club soccer side as well, most recently as the Capital Area Soccer League Coach since 2010. His West Coast experiences include two years as a girls coach with California Odyssey and the Region IV ODP Girls Coach in the summer of 2008. From 2009 until accepting the UNLV job, he served as North Carolina Olympic Development Head Coach. Shaw was an All-American at Methodist, helping the Monarchs to four-straight conference championships and four NCAA tournament appearances. He earned adidas Scholar-Athlete AllAmerican honors in 1993, was named the Methodist University Male Senior Athlete of the Year, and was a member of the USA South Conference 50th Anniversary Team. After graduating in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and physical education, he played professional soccer for the Raleigh Flyers of the USISL in 1994. Shaw would earn his master’s of arts degree in exercise physiology in July of 1997 from East Carolina. He holds the Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and an “A” level National License from U.S. Soccer.

2014 UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Q&A WITH CHRIS Q: What first got you involved in the sport of soccer? A: Like a lot of kids my age back in the ‘70s, it started to become the sport that kids played at a young age. So in 2nd or 3rd grade my mom signed me up for a rec team, but the first team I played on was coached by an Olympic medalist sprinter, so there was a lot of running and that didn’t go over well with me. I ended up quitting, and then they went undefeated that season. We moved to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and it was a big soccer community there. I asked if I could play again, and had a great experience. After that we moved to Europe for four years. Living in Germany, playing soccer was kind of the expectation and where I fell in love with it. I’ve played and coached ever since. Q: What would you say is your top soccer highlight thus far, as a player or a coach? A: As a player, I would have to say my junior year at Methodist, I was a junior, I was a defender, we were in the NCAA South Regional finals, and I scored a goal to make it 2-0 against one of our big regional rivals. That was a pretty big feeling. As a coach, there have been so many - big wins, conference championships - it’s hard to really single out one event because every year that you do something like that it’s special. Q: What do you see as your goals for UNLV for the upcoming season and for the next five years? A: For the upcoming season, it’s to be competitive in the conference. And by competitive, that means we are competing for a conference championship, to win the regular-season title, earn spot in the conference tournament and win the conference tournament and get the auto bid to the NCAA Tournament. Long term, my goals are the continue that, I want UNLV to be in the mix for a conference championship every year, to be considered as one of the favorites and to be talked about as a tough game for our opponents. I want us to be at that level. Q: What is needed to turn UNLV into a top-25 team? A: I like to think that Las Vegas is a hotbed for soccer, and for UNLV to be a top 25 team, you have to keep the best of the best from Las Vegas at UNLV, and not have the best high school players here going to other schools. If you keep the local kids home, you’ve got great talent coming out of here, and that puts you in the mix to be a ranked team.

NOTES ON SHAW UNLV Head Coach • Became the Rebels’ sixth head coach on May 21, 2014

As a Player • All-American defender at Methodist • adidas Scholar-Athlete All-American in 1993 • Member of USA South Conference 50th Anniversary Team • 1993 Methodist Male Senior Athlete of the Year • Played for Raleigh Flyers of the USISL in 1994

As a Coach • Set a NCAA Division II record for single-season turnaround at Mount Olive in 2004 (from 3-15 to 20-13) • Led Mount Olive to Conference Carolina title in 2004 • Barton’s turnaround of 10 games in 2013 (4-11-1 to 145-1) ranked second-best in the nation. He is the only coach to have two teams on the all-time most improved list in Division II history • 2004 and 2013 Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year

Q: With youth soccer being big in the local community, how is that an advantage for UNLV? A: From a selfish standpoint, it’s always nice not to have to leave your backyard to recruit. Hopefully kids are growing up watching UNLV soccer, with the University in their backyard, and have an affection for the university and program, and are growing up aspiring to go on the field and put the UNLV uniform on their back. Every good program I’ve been a part of or been aware of has had good fan support, so when you’ve got a great soccer community, that usually equates into more fans, and the more fans you have helps your crowd atmosphere. That home field advantage can equate into some Ws from some tough close games, having a good youth soccer base is fantastic and an advantage to the University and the program. Q: What style could we see the Rebels playing under you this year? A: My preference would be a very attacking, attractive style of play. However, the players dictate your style and system. We’re going to look to score goals and get forward and I would rather win a game 5-2 than 1-0. But that’s going to depend on the players we have in the system, if we’re stacked defensively and not as strong going forward, at the end of the day we want to win games. But moving forward past this season, we hope to obtain the types of players who allow us to send numbers forward and defenders that can get involved in the attack as well.

He was promoted to full-time assistant in spring 2014 and led the team during the head coaching transition, and then was kept on staff by Chris Shaw and elevated to the top assistant position. Pringle’s roles with the team will include: goalkeeper training, scouting opposition, assisting with recruitment, assisting with training and development of players in practice and game settings, and game day organization. As the goalkeeper coach in 2013, he oversaw Kylie Wassell to a season that included five shutouts, 86 saves and a GAA of just 1.16 in over 2,000 minutes play, en route to being named all-conference. Before moving to Las Vegas in 2012, Pringle built an extensive club and high school coaching resume in Southern California and still runs a goalkeeper school there. In addition to his role at UNLV, he now works as the Director of Coaching for a local club as well as goalkeeper coach for Nevada ODP. He currently holds a USSF C license and NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeping Diploma. Pringle is also currently attending classes at UNLV while working on his degree. Growing up in Newcastle, England, Pringle was a product of the Newcastle United youth system, enjoying four years there before moving on to several other professional clubs. In the U.S., he won the U19 National Championship with Nomads of San Diego and played in the A-League and USL.

ERICA MEIER UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Erica Meier will serve as undergraduate assistant coach for the Rebels this season. She was due to play her senior year in 2014, but had to retire from the sport in the early part of her junior season due to injuries. In her three years on the field, Meier appeared in 37 games and made 23 starts. She scored a total of eight points for the Rebels, thanks to three goals and two assists, and as a freshman had the game-winning score in a 2-1 win over TCU in 2011. A native of Boulder, Colo., Meier is majoring in hospitality management.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Despite playing under their third coach in four years, the young Rebel squad is ready to make its mark in the Mountain West The Rebels enter the 2014 campaign with their third head coach in four years, as Chris Shaw took over the helm of the program in May. In addition to dealing with the change on the sidelines, the Rebels are also fielding one of their youngest-ever squads, with only one senior compared with a total of 23 underclassmen. While most teams would be worried about a lack of upperclassmen to call upon, the Rebel sophomores are not your typical second-year class. Due to a season-long string of injuries that devastated the UNLV roster, the 2013 freshman class was pressed into service early. Eleven freshmen would start at least two games or more for the Rebels, while first-year players took up the third, fourth and fifth spots on the top scorers list last season. Shaw is hoping that the valuable game-time experience the Rebels earned a year ago will pay off when they hit the field this season. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the talent level of the players,” said Shaw of the Rebels. “I think that we have a very dynamic, attack-orientated team that is very deep at the forward position. Our challenge this year will be to figure out a few things in the back and the midfield, but I feel this will be a very entertaining and fun team to watch with the attacking style we will be showing.” Perhaps the biggest key this season according to Shaw is how well the midfield comes together, both with its defending and ability to start the attack. Returning starter Addy Guida will be one of the leaders in the midfield, while another part of the puzzle in the middle will be solved by the return of junior Denali Murnan, one of the top offensive threats on the team who only played in five games a year ago due to a broken elbow. Two more players looked at as important to the success of the team this year are returning starters as well. The lone senior, Kristen Sankey, makes the move to the midfield this season, while junior Samantha Weber, a team captain, provides leadership from the back four. UNLV lost a pair of stellar seniors following the 2013 season: two-time first team all-conference forward Jenn Wolfe, one of the top scorers in the Mountain West the past two seasons, and four-year starting goalkeeper Kylie Wassell both graduated. If the Rebels can find a way to make up the goals that Wolfe scored the past two years, and if one of the Rebels’ four goalkeepers can duplicate the season that Wassell had as a freshman, then UNLV is confident it has what it takes to make an impact in the conference standings.

improve our attack.” Leading the way is a group of sophomores that all appeared in the starting lineup last season: Brittney Gideon, Gaby Vazquez, Dakota Blazak and Lily Sender. The four of them combined for 14 points and will be looking to make a bigger impact in their second season. A key newcomer to the group is very familiar with Shaw, as junior Jodi Barber transferred to the squad after playing the 2013 season under Shaw at Barton College. She scored 41 points off 16 goals while earning Carolinas Conference Player of the Year honors. “Jodi is an aggressive player who simply scored goals at every level she’s been at, and we hope to see that continue here,” said Shaw. “She was one of several players in preseason camp making an argument for a starting role, and we will see who rises to the top.” The Rebels add three freshmen up front, Korie Bozart (Torrance, Calif.), Lindsey Dovali (Clovis, Calif.) and Kaila Brinkman (Las Vegas), while returning sophomore Isabelle Delgado is making the move from the backline to the forward group in 2014.

MURNAN

FORWARDS This is one of the areas hit hardest in losses, as the Rebels will have to make up the point missing from Wolfe (seven goals, 21 points) as well as Miranda Rawlings, who was fifth on the team in scoring before transferring away to be closer to home. That said, this is also the position group that Shaw is the most excited about entering the season. “I have never been involved with a team that has so much depth up front as we do this year. We easily have six players that could be starters for us, and that can only help

I expect to be tinkering with lineups all that tthrough preseason to determine that. We are very fortunate again tto have depth at this position,” said Shaw. While Weber is the only upperclassman in the group, she iis joined by returning sophomores Nicole Westover, Katie Vanderzwaag, Kendall Sandoval and Michaela Kelsey, while V Taryn Tanaka will be a redshirt freshman. New this season to the defenders is freshman Chidera Akubuilo from Torrance, Calif. d

GOALKEEPERS MIDFIELDERS The midfield has the most experience on the team with the combination of Murnan, Guida and Sankey. However, this is the first season they will play together as a unit. How fast they come together while working in a possible new starter will be another key to the Rebels’ success this season. “Denali is a fantastic athlete while Addy is a very consistent and technical player, and having them on the field together is a big plus for our midfield,” said Shaw. Sankey will provide much needed senior leadership while playing in a more defensive midfielder role. Also in the mix to start in the midfield is sophomore Jordan Magnin, who scored four goals a year ago, including a pair of game-winners, and freshman Sophie Cortes (Newhall, Calif.), a very creative player who can push the attack from the back. Other returnees to the position include: sophomore Courtney Anderson and junior Nicole Candioglos, both of whom will see significant action this season.

DEFENSE While the Rebels return several players at the defender position, perhaps the only set starting slot looks to be Weber, who has 38 straight starts on the backline, and a player Shaw is counting on to anchor the rest of the UNLV defensive effort. “We have several talented players pushing for spots on defense. We will have to figure out not our best four, but the four players

No doubt this is the biggest question mark on the team, as four freshmen will be looking to fill the void after the graduation of all-conference Wassell, who started every game of her fouryear career. All four have their strengths at their positions, and Shaw expects the battle for the starting role to go right up to the day before the season opener. Making up the goalkeeper corp this season is redshirt freshmen Emily Casale, Kylie Ojers, and true freshmen Jessie Clark (Burleson, Texas) and Jordan Sallee (Tacoma, Wash.)

2013 YEAR-IN-REVIEW In their second year under head coach Michael Coll, the Rebels hoped to continue their momentum from the previous year when they set a school record for best winning percentage with a 12-4-4 record (.700). However, the Rebels would have to deal with a devastating run of injuries that at one point had the entire starting midfield out. That left Coll with no choice but to turn to his inexperienced freshman class. Some games in the conference season saw the Rebels playing eight freshmen at a time, and only four non-freshmen the entire contest. Despite those challenges, UNLV managed to overcome the obstacles to post a 10-8-3 overall record, and finished in sixth place in the Mountain West with a 5-5 mark. The Rebels would finish the season with only two players starting all 21 games, and they both came from the senior class: forward Jenn Wolfe and Kylie Wassell. Once again they were the top performers for the UNLV squad, with Wolfe leading the team in scoring with 21 points (seven goals, seven assists), while Wassell finished with a 1.16 GAA and five shutouts. UNLV struggled to find more support for Wolfe up front though, as after forward Susie Bernal (two goals, 10 points), the next three leading scorers were all freshmen. Jordan Magnin (four goals, 10 points), Dakota Blazak (three goals, seven points) and Miranda Rawlings (one goal, six points) were the first-year players that rounded out the top five in scoring. They helped to fill the void after the injuries to the midfield that saw UNLV lose: Erica Meier (23 career starts) to a career-ending injury after just two games, Denali Murnan (34 career starts) played just five games after an early season injury followed by a broken elbow at Northern Colorado, and Courtney Botelho (50 starts), who started only 12 games after several ankle

issues. In total, seven players would miss significant time during the season. The season started out on a winning note, with the Rebels claiming victories in four of the first five games. That included a pair of wins on the road, beginning with a 3-2 victory at UC Riverside (Aug. 23), thanks to a pair of Wolfe goals, while Bernal set a UNLV record with three assists in the game. Wolfe was named Mountain West Player of the Week for her performance, which included the game-winner as well. Following a road loss at UC Irvine (Aug. 25), UNLV came home to host the UNLV Nike Invitational, and would claim the title after wins of 5-0 over Portland State and 3-2 against LIU Brooklyn (Sept. 1), which featured Wolfe’s second game-winner of the season off a PK. The freshman class started to make its impact as well on the squad, with Magnin notching her second tally in three games, a golden goal in overtime for a 1-0 road win at Sacramento State (Sept. 6). The Rebel offense then slowed to a halt, scoring just three goals total over the next five games. While two of those resulted in overtime ties (0-0 at Northern Arizona on Sept. 8, 1-1 against Northern Colorado on Sept. 20), UNLV would be shutout in a loss to Washington State (Sept. 13) and fell at another Pac-12 school, Colorado, by a 3-1 score on Sept. 22. Conference play afforded another chance for the Rebels, and they made the most of it in their opener, a 2-0 victory at home over Boise State thanks to a pair of goals from the freshman Magnin on Sept. 27. The inexperience of the team, which by this point featured a starting lineup that was more then 50% freshmen, started to show up once they got into the meat of the conference slate. Following the win over the Broncos, UNLV managed only two goals over the

next six games, going 1-5 during that stretch and falling to 2-5 in league play. UNLV now needed to make a run to get itself back in the hunt for one of eight spots in the conference tournament. And it seemed that throwing their freshmen into the fire paid off as they helped key a three-game win streak to end the regular season with a 5-5 conference record. That was good enough to place them sixth and earn the sixth overall seed in the MW tournament. UNLV began the run with a 3-1 win over Air Force at home, and that was followed by an overtime win at Wyoming, in which all three goals were scored by first-year players. The regular season finale was against instate rival Nevada, Reno, and in one of the most dramatic shots in team history, Wolfe finished off her Senior Night by blasting in 35-yard shot with just nine seconds left in double-overtime to give UNLV a 2-1 victory over the Wolf Pack (Nov. 1). The Rebels ended the season facing Wyoming in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, and after coming from behind to force overtime thanks to another Wolfe goal, the game ended in a tie, though the Cowgirls won the penalty kick shootout to advance. Despite the tournament loss, the season was still a success especially considering the valuable game-time experience the freshman class gained. Wolfe would be honored as well for her play, earning first-team All-MW recognition.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State joined the Mountain West in 2011, followed by Fresno State and Nevada, Reno in 2012. That’s the same year that the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State and Utah State joined, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members. ACHIEVEMENTS Mountain West members have participated in 62 bowl games under the league umbrella, including four appearances in BCS games. The MW has earned 72 postseason bids in men’s basketball, including 40 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT Final Four berths. MW women’s basketball has tallied 63 postseason slots, including 33 NCAA bids, five Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight berth since 2000. Wyoming won the MW’s first WNIT championship in 2007 with a win over Wisconsin. In women’s volleyball, the MW has had 36 NCAA bids with eight Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Women’s soccer has earned 28 NCAA bids since 1999, with two Sweet 16 berths and one Elite Eight appearance. Mountain West men’s golf has sent at least three teams to the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals in each of its 15 years, while women’s golf has had at least three teams participate in NCAA Regionals 12 of the last 15 years. The MW has produced 793 AllAmerica selections among its 18 sponsored sports in the last 14 years. A total of 150 MW student-athletes have also earned Academic All-America accolades in that span. The league has captured three team national championships in women’s cross country and produced 33 individual national champions. YEAR IN REVIEW From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West teams enjoyed an outstanding year in 2013-14. The MW sent a league-record six teams to bowl games, with Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and UNLV joining the Bulldogs and Aggies, marking the seventh consecutive year that at least five teams represented the league in postseason play. Mountain West regular-season champion San Diego State advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament for the second time in four years after receiving an at-large berth. MW tournament champion New Mexico earned the league’s automatic bid and joined the Aztecs in the NCAA tournament, marking the 14th time in 15 years the Conference has sent multiple teams to the Big Dance. In women’s basketball, Fresno State made its seventh consecutive NCAA appearance after capturing the MW tournament crown to earn the Conference’s automatic bid. Mountain West regular-season champion Colorado State advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. In women’s soccer, San Diego State advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year after clinching both the MW regular-season and tournament crowns to earn the league’s automatic bid.

COMMISSIONER CRAIG THOMPSON Craig Thompson was the Mountain West Conference’s first employee when he was named Commissioner on Oct. 15, 1998. Ever since, Thompson has navigated the newest NCAA Division I conference through the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. As the league enters its 16th season of competition in 2014-15, Thompson continues to create and improve the opportunities for Mountain West institutions and student-athletes to be successful both academically and athletically. Since the Mountain West opened its doors on Jan. 4, 1999, Thompson has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW has flourished under the guidance of Commissioner Thompson and continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. His leadership and vision have helped the conference enhance its television revenue and exposure through revolutionary agreements with CBS Sports Network, Comcast and ESPN, including becoming the first major collegiate athletic conference to launch a dedicated sports channel featuring exclusive programming around its athletic programs. Thompson graduated from the University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree in journalism. Following graduation, he spent two years as assistant sports information director at Kansas State University. He then spent three years as director of public relations and promotions for the NBA’s Kansas City Kings. Thompson and his wife, Carla, have a son (Ted) and a daughter (Emma).

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

KUNZER-MURPHY

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina Kunzer-Murphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a three-year contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 student-athletes and their talented head coaches. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us but it’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” A graduate of Valley High School, KunzerMurphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad Rothermel, and eventually worked with the

football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010

In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy returned to work for her alma mater in January of 2013 when she was named Director of Sponsorships and Development for the UNLV Alumni Association. HALL OF FAME HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME

Class of 2012

Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.

FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
