FACILITIES

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s first on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home field” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer field became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball field had previously existed. Once the site was finalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer field. The field is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 50 years. Johann has been a strong supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, 4

Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The final spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the first-ever MLS contest on the UNLV campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. 2014 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELD In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the field. This season will The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program. see the addition of a 90-foot long shade structure on the North side to further enhance the fan experience, while parking has been expanded as well with an extra 125 spaces. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 33rd season in 2014.

ATHLETIC TRAINING Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies. Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-squarefoot area. Aside from five staff offices, a rehabilitation Bernie Chavies room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Athletic Trainer Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight. The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room. Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises. All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confines of the Lied Athletic Complex. SCHOLARSHIP/SUPPORT STAFF The 2014 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 40h year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefit a Las Vegas native on the team. Freshman forward Danny Musovski of Liberty High School in Henderson is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of George and Silvana Musovski. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johann and his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s first-ever on-campus soccer field was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 32 years.

HEAD COACH

RICH RYERSON

HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON UNLV ‘87

Former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson was named the fifth head men’s soccer coach in UNLV program history on April 7, 2010. He took over the helm of the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach under former Rebel coach Mario Sanchez. “It was a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.” In his first year as the Rebels’ head coach, Ryerson took a team that had 11 newcomers and coached it to a 6-11-2 mark. Seven of the 11 losses were by one goal, and UNLV pulled off several impressive victories, including a win at Stanford and both a win and tie against MPSF Mountain champion Denver. The Rebels struggled with injuries in 2011, but one big highlight was unheralded recruit Salvador Bernal of Las Vegas, a member of Ryerson’ first recruiting class who became the second player in team history to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Year. In Ryerson’s third season, the Rebels pulled off several noteworthy outings, including home victories over Cal State Northridge and Air Force, both eventual NCAA Tournament squads. This past season, the Rebels earned their first conference winning season since 2002 at 5-4-1, while posting an overall record of 7-10-2. Just as important as the coaching aspect of the job is Ryerson’s fundraising accomplishments. In the summer of 2011 he was able to help UNLV secure an $850,000 donation from the Englestad foundation, as well as other donations to help ensure the stability of the men’s program at UNLV for the next five years. Most recently, with the help of former men’s coach Barry Barto, a one million dollar donation from the Hannah family was secured in 2013, bringing Ryerson’s soccer specific fundraising totals over two million in four years. One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfielder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his first time in Las Vegas. In his junior season, the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 final national ranking, and that 1985 squad was inducted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 2010. A two-time all-region and all-conference

14

selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983. Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and finished his career in 1998 with the Baton Rouge Bombers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League, where he was named the EISL’s Defensive Player of the Year. Beginning in 1994, Ryerson served as athletic director and physical education teacher for the Marywood-Palm Valley School, a K-12 program in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and he held that position until 2006 when he moved back to Las Vegas. He served as Director of Coaching for the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club for two years but stepped down from that position after accepting the Rebels’ head job. In 2010, Ryerson was the Nevada State Vice President for US Youth Soccer before changing positions to Director of Coaching for the association after taking over at UNLV. A native of Maryland, Ryerson was inducted into that state’s Soccer Hall of Fame on May 11, 2012.

He earned Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1998-99 after leading both his boys and girls teams to their respective Nevada State Championships, the first ever in Nevada State history to win titles in both boy’s and girl’s soccer in the same season under the same head coach. A five-time Nevada State Coach of the Year selection, three with the boys and two with the girls, Schell also guided his Alliance Football Club boys team to four state titles from 1996-99. He also coached the Premier S.C. and United Boys clubs to six state championships. In his career at UNLV (1990-94), he earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention as a goalkeeper in 1992. He sits in second place all-time at UNLV in both saves and shutouts with 89 and six, respectively. His 228 career saves also rank third in Rebel history. 2014 SEASON OUTLOOK With its most experienced team in years, the Rebels hope to challenge for the WAC title There are times that a team and a coach will shy away from preseason predictions, worried that the pressure to live up to them will overwhelm the team and derail the season. There is no backing down from such preseason hype this year for the Rebels. While fifth-year head coach Rich Ryerson and the Rebels know that in the end all that matters is what you do at the end of the season, there’s no denying the experience and talent that UNLV will put on the field in 2014. The Rebels are one of the most upperclassmen heavy squads in the nation, with 17 total juniors and seniors, while the team’s 345 total career starts by returning players ranks as the fifth-highest total in the nation. Nine starters from a year ago return for UNLV and are expected to once again keep that role in 2014, and for the first time since 1991, UNLV brings back four all-conference players from the previous season. That combination of experience, skill level at every area of the field and overall team leadership means the Rebels have everything in place to make a run at their first conference title in 27 years. “That we have as many returning players say alot about the commimment the players have made to the program,” said Ryerson. “And this is by far the most experienced team that we’ve had here at UNLV since I’ve been the head coach. If we can carry over how we played at the end of last season, and in our spring season this year, I think we can have a very good year.” Ryerson is excited not only about the experience and leadership, but the specific skill sets of this year’s squad. Most notably in terms of overall speed at all position group, along with several players that combine that with strength in their defensive abilities or their legs on offense. “We have a good blend of speed, power and technique, and I’m excited to see how things will turn out.”

Bernal takes full advantage of his low center of gravity while eluding defenders while on an attack, and is one of the best finishes in the league as well. The Rebels have three more at the group, all who will be fighting for a starting spot, but all four forwards will see playing time every game this year its expected. “We have an extermely diverse group of forwards, they can adapt to different styles of defense, and that hopefully is an advantage for us.” The returning playing in the group is Corey Ackley, a junior who saw signficant playing time for the first time last year and responded with two goals and five points. New to the group are junior Julien Dragomir and freshman Danny Musovski. Ryerson is excited about the potential of both players, as Dragomir transferred from JC power Yavapai CC, where he ranked in the top 15 in the nation in scoring, while Musovski, from Henderson, Nev., was recruited heavily by other soccer powers after setting new prep records in total goals for both a season (58) and career (128). “Julien is a proven goal scorer with a knack for getting into threating positions, while Danny is an outstanding scorer with the ability to create his own chances.”

BERNAL

The theme this year has been about defending first. That’s not a luxury Ryerson had when he first started, as the team needed to win high scoring affairs until he was able to build the talent level of the defender corp back up. “Now we can recruit specific players for a specific system of play, when I first started we had to worry about just filling holes on the roster,” said Ryerson. “Now that we’ve spent the last few years filling specific talent needs, I hope is the year that it all pays off.”

FORWARDS

Once again, when you talk about the fowwards of UNLV, you have to start with senior Salvador Bernal. The Las Vegas native has been in the starting lineup ever since his first day on campus, and the former MPSF Newcomer of the Year has the chance to become the first Rebel to ever be named first-team all-conference all four years. He earned his third straight honor a year ago (as well as a second straight all-region recoginition) after posting 14 points while his six assists were second-best in the WAC. He comes in this year as not only with preseason all-league honors, but has also been named one of the top 100 players in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK MIDFIELDERS

The deepest position by far on the team, as the Rebels are so stacked at this position their second four could be a starting group on another team in the conference. “We have a very hard-working, roll up your sleeves and get your job down mentality in this group,” said Ryerson. The Rebels return four starters from a year ago, beginning with junior Rodrigo Fuentes, a second team All-WAC selection in 2013 after leading the Rebels with 16 points. Fuentes is also a preseason all-conference selection by the WAC. Also returning in the middle is senior Julian Portugal, who’s six assists a year ago tied for second in the league (along with Bernal), sophomore Kevin Partida and senior Carlos Lara, both of who Ryerson knows have the potential to make a bigger offensive impact in their senior year on the team. UNLV also brings back a pair of players that started games last year, juniors Irvin Somera and Andy Rodriguez, while seeing the field for the first time after redshirting 2013 will be Cody Massey and Blake Balelo. Two of this year’s freshmen class are also expected to make a big impact at the position and to make their claim for significant playing time, Oscar Velazquez of North Las Vegas and Shota Takada of Honolulu, Hawaii.

FUENTES

Just like the midfield group, this again is a very experienced, upperclassmen led group, that returns the top back four in the conference from a year ago. Senior Kyle Mellies, a second team All-WAC selection a year ago, junior Bradley Kamdem, a preseason all-conference team member, senior Connor Coletti and junior Jason Khamvongsa combined to give up just 30 total goals during the season, which was the fewest allowed by any team in the conference. With another year together, the Rebels hope defensive shutdown ability will continue. Backing up the four is junior Aaron Goo, who will see time both here and in the midfield. Also to see time this year will be seniors Ricky Acero, and Sebastian Hernandez, and redshirt freshman Mitch Myers.

GOALKEEPERS

UNLV has the luxury of boasting the top goalkeeper in the conference in its goal, with senior Ryan Harding coming back after the best year of his career. The 2014 WAC preseason Defender of the Year led the league in GAA with 1.22, while his four shutouts tied for the WAC lead despite playing in only 13 games. “Ryan is a true model for our team, to come back after a year of cancer treatments (2012) and to turn in the year he had, he completely exceeded all of our expectaions, and we’re lucky to have him in the goal for us this year once again.” Harding will have three keepers backing him up, sophomore Richard Garness, redshirt junior Abdel Rodriguez and freshman Nathan Bohm from Las Vegas.

2013 YEAR-IN-REVIEW The Rebels’ 2013 season would turn into a year of missed opportunities. UNLV had very good success at times with several impressive victories. However the Rebels couldn’t capitalize on those triumphs, with only two win streaks the entire season. One of those winning streaks did come at the end of the season, as a three-game spurt led to a 4-1-2 mark over the final seven games of the season, which clinched a top three finish in the WAC. UNLV began the season on the road, and dropped a pair of 3-1 games to teams that would reach the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season, Delaware on Aug. 30 and UMBC on Sept. 1. The Rebels then returned home to host their lone tournament of the season, the UNLV Nike Invitational. A home game was just what the Rebels needed, as they exploded on offense with two straight four-goal games. First UNLV upset Bradley, a team receiving votes in the national top-25 polls, by a 4-1 margin, and followed that with a 4-2 victory over Georgia State (Sept. 8). The story of that weekend was the play of sophomore midfielder Rodrigo Fuentes, who had a breakout performance after posting two goals and an assist against Bradley, along with a goal and an assists in the win over Georgia State. He became the first-ever Rebel to be named to the National Team of the Week by two different organizations in the same week (Top Drawer Soccer, College Soccer News) following the Rebel sweep. Standing at 2-2, UNLV couldn’t keep the win streak alive, thanks to a tough three-game stretch with games against Gonzaga

(2-0 loss on Sept. 15), a 2-1 loss at third-ranked Cal State Northridge on Sept. 20, and a 2-1 loss at UC Riverside on Sept. 22. UNLV thought that a return home would be the cure for its offensive struggles, but suffered a 1-0 overtime loss at the hands of Sacramento State (Sept. 28), despite outplaying the Hornets for the majority of the game and holding a 26-7 edge on shots. The Rebels made sure their next home outing would have a different outcome. Facing WAC preseason favorite Bakersfield, the Rebels shut out the Roadrunners and claimed a 2-0 victory. That quickly let the league know that despite its non-conference results, UNLV would be a team to reckon with in the league race. A tough road trip followed the opener, however, and the next game was almost a perfect example of how the 2013 season went for the Rebels. UNLV received a red card in the first half, and was forced to play shorthanded for the rest of the game. Despite the Rebels being a man down, Salvador Bernal scored in the first half to put UNLV ahead. The Redhawks would eventually tie the game to send it into overtime. Still, UNLV looked to escape with at least a tie and a key point on the road, but with only 76 seconds left Seattle came up with a golden goal, leading the Rebels to a 2-1 setback. That loss lingered on the team over the next two games as well, a 1-0 loss at San Jose State (Oct. 13) and at home to Seattle on Oct. 18 by a 2-0 score. UNLV broke out of its slump with a 1-0 shutout at home

The Rebels were 6-3 at Peter Johann Memorial Field in 2013 44

WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE HONORS ALL-CONFERENCE against SJSU on Oct. 20, thanks to a game-winner from Fuentes. That started the Rebels’ season-ending run, as they would explode for five goals in a 5-2 win over Houston Baptist, and then went undefeated on a two-game road swing, a 0-0 tie at Air Force (Nov. 1) and a 3-1 win at Grand Canyon (Nov. 3). UNLV entered the regular-season finale at Bakersfield with second place in the league on the line. The Rebels held an early lead in the game, until the Roadrunners stormed back and claimed an eventual 4-3 victory, which made UNLV to the third seed in the WAC tournament. Opening up against San Jose State, the Rebels twice fell behind by a score, and both times tied the contest. The second tie came with only minutes left in regulation, forcing overtime. After two scoreless extra periods, the teams officially ended in a tie, A penalty kick shootout between the teams to decide who advanced lasted 10 rounds, eventually won by the Spartans 9-8. While the Rebels finished with a 7-10-2 overall mark, they did earn their first winning record in league play since 2002 at 5-4-1. Four Rebels were honored after the season, with Bernal being named first team All-WAC, while junior goalkeeper Ryan Harding, junior defender Kyle Mellies and Fuentes were second team selections. Bernal was also selected to the NSCAA All-Far West Region third team for the second straight year. Fuentes ended the year as one of three players in double-figure points with 16 off six goals and four assists. Senior Joaquin Rivas concluded his career as a Rebel with his best year ever, tying for the team lead in goals with six to go along with three assists for 15 total points. Bernal was the third player in double figures with 14 points off four goals and six assists. Harding posted just as impressive numbers in goal, as his 1.22 GAA led the WAC, while he was tied for the league lead in shutouts with four, despite playing in only a total of 13 games.

THE WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE After completing its 52nd year of intercollegiate competition, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation’s best programs. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets and largest metropolitan cities. In addition, the WAC’s studentathletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success over the years. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 28 of the past 40 seasons. In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003. In women’s basketball, the conference has had at least two teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 23 seasons, with a record five teams in 1998. The WAC also sent teams to three BCS football bowl games from 2007-10. In 2014-15, the WAC will debut a new digital network to give fans high quality streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball. The WAC’s history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008. The WAC has had just six commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from 1962-1968. He was followed by Wiles Hallock (1968-71), Stan Bates (1971-80), Dr. Joe Kearney (1980-94), Karl Benson (1994-2012) and current commissioner Jeff Hurd (2012-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 27,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Offering 103 undergraduate programs and 123 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of 5,500 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

SNYDER

UNLV President Donald Snyder has deep ties to the university and Southern Nevada. An executive with senior leadership experience in both the commercial banking and gaming industries, Snyder has also been involved with UNLV as a volunteer or dean since his arrival in Las Vegas more than 25 years ago. He was appointed acting president in February 2014. As president, Snyder will continue the campus’ surge toward Carnegie Tier One status, which includes plans to create a School of Medicine at UNLV. Snyder was dean of the UNLV Harrah Hotel College from 2010 to 2013 and more recently served as UNLV’s executive dean for strategic development. He is also the point person for the UNLV stadium project through his role as chair of the UNLV Campus Improvement Authority Board. He spent 22 years with First Interstate Bank (now Wells Fargo), rising through the management ranks to become chairman and CEO from 1987 to 1991. He went on to co-found Bank of Nevada, and has been an active member of the Board of Directors throughout its growth into Western Alliance Bancorporation, a multi-state banking organization. In 1992, Snyder led the effort to construct what would become the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas. After the Fremont Street Experience successfully opened in 1996, he joined Boyd Gaming, where he served as president from 1997 to 2005. A prolific fundraiser, Snyder played an integral role as chairman of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. KUNZER-MURPHY

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Tina KunzerMurphy has been a fixture in the Southern Nevada sports community for more than four decades. On July 1, 2013, she added another accomplishment to her long and varied career as she began serving as UNLV Interim Director of Athletics. The move marked two major milestones as Kunzer-Murphy became both the first woman and the first alum of the school to run the department. Just six months later, the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents removed the interim tag from Kunzer-Murphy’s title and approved a three-year contract for her to serve as the school’s permanent AD. “I want to thank the Board of Regents for the tremendous support that they’ve given to me and to UNLV Athletics,” Kunzer-Murphy said. “It’s an unbelievable and humbling opportunity to work on behalf of our 450 studentathletes and their talented head coaches. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us but it’s a great thing to wake up every morning knowing that you get a chance to make a real difference at your alma mater in your own hometown.” A graduate of Valley High School, KunzerMurphy first attended Southern Utah, where she lettered in swimming, before transferring to UNLV to compete in both tennis and volleyball at her hometown university. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from the school in 1975. While pursuing a graduate degree she served as a tennis instructor and dance teacher at both UNLV and Clark County Community College (now CSN). Soon after earning her master’s in education in 1977, she was hired as head coach of the UNLV women’s tennis team as well as director of its cheerleading program. When the school dropped tennis for financial reasons in the early 1980s, she was thrust into a management role under then-athletics director Brad

Rothermel, and eventually worked with the football and basketball programs, among others, during the department’s wildly successful run through the PCAA/Big West Conference. Named UNLV’s Senior Women’s Administrator in 1981, Kunzer-Murphy oversaw the entire Lady Rebel athletic program, as well as various support groups such as the Rebel Football Foundation, the Rebel Golf Foundation and the Women’s Sports Foundation, which she helped create. In 1983, she was named an assistant athletics director and in 1987 was promoted to senior assistant AD. Kunzer-Murphy became senior associate AD at the University of Pacific in 1992 but then soon returned to town to work for the Las Vegas 51s and Thunder professional sports franchises as director of corporate sales and marketing. After UNLV moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, Kunzer-Murphy was hired by the WAC to run its annual football championship game and men’s and women’s basketball championship events in Las Vegas. Kunzer-Murphy returned to campus in 1999 when she was selected by ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to run the newly formed ESPN Regional at UNLV office, which oversaw the athletic department’s corporate sales and broadcasting departments until 2005. From 2000-12, Kunzer-Murphy served as Executive Director of the Las Vegas Bowl, which ERT purchased. Under her leadership, the bowl game enjoyed six consecutive sellouts from 2006-11, record-high TV ratings and team payouts en route to elevating itself into the national college football landscape A 2007 inductee of the Southern Nevada

Sports Hall of Fame, Kunzer-Murphy in 2010 became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Football Bowl Association. In summer 2011 she was honored as Las Vegas’ Sportsperson of the Year as part of the annual “24-Hour Radiothon” staged by Lotus Broadcasting, which benefits The Caring Place, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to easing the journey of those affected by cancer. Kunzer-Murphy has been married to former UNLV coach and local high school teacher and coach Greg Murphy since 1990. She has one son, Stephen, who is married to Ginny Broffett and the couple is expecting the arrival of the newest little Rebel in late September.

HALL OF FAME HALL HALL OF OF FAME FAME HALL OF FAME

Class of 2012

Seven different Rebel sports were represented during ceremonies as the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012 was honored Oct. 12, 2012. Six former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished contributor joined one team in being inducted the night before the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between UNLV and Nevada, Reno. Also being honored that night was former Rebel football player and current TV personality, Kenny Mayne, who received the Silver Rebel Award Born in 1987, UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame has now grown to 114 members strong. Under the hall’s bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must have stopped working at the University five years previous. All classes now enter on a biennial basis.

FRED ALBRECHT (1974-83, 1995, 2003) The winningest coach in UNLV tennis history, led the Rebel netters and compiled a record of 230-80 for a winning percentage of .742. A longtime administrator on campus, Albrecht was called upon to serve as Interim Athletics Director in both 1995 and 2003 during searches for permanent replacements. He retired from UNLV in 2007 after 38 years with a final title of vice president for university and community relations. LORENA DIACONESCU (1998-02) is arguably the Rebels women’s swimming program’s most decorated athlete. She won three consecutive Conference Swimmer of the Year awards from 2000-02 while setting school records in six separate events. Diaconescu earned All-America in 2000 and was honorable mention one year later. Winner of eight MW individual crowns as well as seven relay titles, she was also a two-time Olympian for her home country of Romania. LINDA FROHLICH (1998-02) The highest-scoring basketball player in UNLV history – men’s or women’s – finished with 2,355 points and a 21.2 PPG average in her dominating hoops career. The native of Oldendorf, Germany, was named USBWA National Freshman of the Year in 1999, AP Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore and junior and then Third Team as a senior. EDDIE OWENS (1973-77) Still the leading Runnin’ Rebel scorer in history, was the emerging program’s second All-American in men’s basketball when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in 1976. JACINT SIMON (1998-2002) turned in a career in the water that rivaled any in school history. The Mountain West Swimmer of the Year three consecutive seasons earned All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships while also being honorable mention in two relays. His fourth All-America finish came in 2002. Simon won 10 conference championships as an individual and one on a relay team and swam for his home nation of Hungary in the 2000 Summer Olympics. AMIE STEWART (1992-95) was a dominant pitcher for dominant softball program in the mid-1990s. A second team All-America selection as a senior in 1995, her 30-9 mark is still the school record for wins a season. She led her team all the way to the Women’s College World Series and tossed two complete games while finishing with a .95 ERA en route to becoming the only Rebel to be named to a WCWS All-Tournament Team. KEVIN THOMAS (1998-01) Arguably the top cornerback in school history, still holds numerous school and conference defensive records. The first player in school history to start 46 games, Thomas was the first defensive player from UNLV to earn All-America status in 26 years when he was named Third Team by Football News and Fourth Team by Sporting News. The 1984 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM was the first of two in school history to win a conference championship and its 11-2 overall record included a victory over Toledo in the California Bowl. Going undefeated in the PCAA, the talent-rich squad featured the conference Offensive Player of the Year in All-America punter/quarterback Randall Cunningham; the Defensive Player of the Year in lineman Aaron Moog; and the Coach of the Year in Harvey Hyde. DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR MIKE MILLER is noted Las Vegas artist and illustrator. During the 1980s, Miller created and named the cartoon man with the long moustache known as “Hey Reb.” Miller was paid a single dollar for his work, which eventually helped UNLV vault to the top spot in college apparel licensing.
