COSMIC ZONE The zone has made its debut in the programme of the Silesian Science Festival this year. It featured, among others, the best Polish Mars rovers, planetarium operated by the Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów, spacesuits, gyroscope, VR (Virtual Reality) stations, where one could virtually become an astronaut and get aboard a spaceship, as well as a lot of attractions for kids. It was also a meeting point with the NASA astronaut Nicole Stott and the only Pole in space – Mirosław Hermaszewski.

OFF SCIENCE We created the OFF Science zone for the second time, and within this space we organised the Review of Garage Inventions. On Sunday, 13 January participants in the Silesian Science Festival could have a close look at 11 projects by Silesian amateur inventors and choose the one which, in their opinion, was most inspiring. The winner of the audience poll was an electric go-kart made by a non-professional originator himself. A special expert committee and readers of “Dziennik Zachodni” also selected their favourites – roof deflection alarm system and application for reading human thoughts respectively.

READING AND WRITING ZONES Both zones, incorporated into the sphere of humane and social studies, became part of the festival space for the first time. Their programme was composed of a dozen or so lectures (reading zone) and workshops (writing zone).

The former zone was ideal for all bookworms and students became convicted that required reading does not need to be so scary as it seems. The latter zone was visited, in search for inspiration, by participants interested in the difficult art of writing – its arcana were revealed by individuals dealing with writing on a daily basis.

SCIENTIFIC LASER SHOW

BY LUND UNIVERSITY The group of physics enthusiasts from Lund University (Sweden) won the hearts of participants in the 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE not only with the effective physical shows and the crowning spectacular laser show but also with their inexhaustible strength, enthusiasm and sense of humour. The places for most shows were filled very quickly, and the guests from Sweden promised they would prepare a new programme for the Silesian audience with pleasure.

E-SPORT POINT Silesia and Katowice have been considered the capital of e-sport for a long time, partly because of the organisation of events like Intel Extreme Masters or the unusually well-developed computer game industry in our region. When organising the Silesian Science Festival, we assume that we should not pass over any of the phenomena of the surrounding world. That is why we try, second year in a row, to present e-sport in the traditional form of students’ games, combining them with lectures and talks about the possibility of using e-sport in didactics and socialisation. This year’s E-Sport Point was again full of excitement thanks to the tournaments played on the on the main stage of this zone. Older computers delivered by the Museum of History of Computers and Computer Science were also very popular – they brought back memories and filled many participants with nostalgia. In contrast, on the other side of the room there was the Free to Play zone where participants could try their hand at playing games using state-of-the-art devices.

KID’S ZONE We realised that the magnitude of the Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE may prove too demanding for the youngest participants. That is why, having them in mind, we arrange every year a special zone in the festival space where both kids and their parents may relax. This time, there was also an additional play area in one of the conference rooms – kids could be left there under the professional care of qualified entertainers.

SCIENCE STATION It was the second time that we decided to include in the programme of the Silesian Science Festival meetings in the form of a so-called living library. Visitors had a chance to talk at one of the specially arranged stations (one named after Albert Einstein and the other one after Maria Skłodowska-Curie) with a dozen or so representatives from the world of science and other inspiring individuals in a more cosy atmosphere.

The auditorium is one of our favourite places at the International Congress Centre. The room has a capacity of over 550 participants. It is perfectly equipped and very well prepared for the visitors to literally immerse in the world of science. During the 3rd Silesian Science Festival we offered the participants the opportunity to get to know our specials guests, who stayed here a bit longer than on the main stage.

Presentations on the auditorium stage included: ■■ theatre performances;

■■ show by an orchestra which used only mobile devices; ■■ meetings with special guests;

■■ debates conducted by experts;

■■ talks about professionalisation of e-sport.

In total, over 20 performances were held on this stage during the event.

A novelty at the festival was the stage located right next to the entrance from the side of “Spodek”, which was designed, most of all, for artistic performances and different types of shows. It was the venue of presentations by 26 artistic formations: singers, music groups, dancers and school drill bands.

Three rooms with an area of 340 to 400 m2 offer us the possibility for flexible arrangement of space. Looking at the interest of the Silesian Science Festival participants in individual activities, it is safe to say that one of the festival hearts was beating here. This year we wanted the offer presented in these rooms to be very diversified – we decided to rely on several proven solutions, but we also added quite a lot of novelties.

In the ballrooms participants could visit and take part in attractions offered by the E-Sport Point, 3rd Festival of Secondary Schools “Reach for a profession” organised by the City Hall of Katowice, which was made of over 40 stands of schools and partners of the event, and to experience physical shows by Lund University (Sweden), which proved to be one of the biggest attractionsof the 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE.

There were 7 information points operated by nearly 50 staff members who were responsible for receiving participants and exhibitors. The points served different functions: some were in charge of selected zones, and others functioned only at the time of assembly and disassembly works. This year we decided to focus, most of all, on appropriate communication with participants and exhibitors, as well as on educating our staff and volunteers during 4 trainings.

Two truss structures (over 3 metres high and approx. 11 metres wide) with signs informing about the location of attractions and directions of exhibition were installed on the premises of the ICC.

We have also prepared 11 direction totems, about 150 boards with information on individual attractions and nearly 300 linear metres of floor stickers facilitating the visit to the festival. Moving about the ICC was easy also thanks to the large maps located in the building. Maps were also available as part of the 12-page supplement to “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Dziennik Zachodni” with a circulation of 100,000 copies. The supplement was distributed during the festival as well.

During this year’s edition the Silesian Science Festival also used the space of “Spodek”. On the first day 11 garage inventions were presented in the connector between

the ICC and “Spodek”. Each visitor could take part in the poll to choose the most interesting of them. On the second day the connector was used for communications between the ICC and the cloakrooms for organised groups in “Spodek”.

The VIP zone, which was located close to the entrance to the ICC auditorium, was dedicated to partners and special guests who could relax away from the hustle and bustle and make themselves comfortable there. The zone covered an area of approx. 250 m2 and offered snacks, catering tables, sofas and coffee makers which worked very intensively during these two days and served nearly 1,000 coffees.

Apart from the stands of six stations which broadcasted the event live, the festival space also featured a broadcasting studio situated above the main stage. It recorded over 17 hours of programme which includes, among others, reporter’s material, interviews and lecture recordings. Additionally, there was a parallel transmission from the main stage, from the auditorium stage and from the e-sport zone. In total, the live reports were watched by over 8,000 people. In the near future several hundred hours of television material presenting the most interesting attractions of the Silesian Science Festival will be released.
