The William of Durham Club recognises the generosity of those who have made a future provision for Univ in their Estate Plans. MEMBERS OF THE WILLIAM OF DURHAM CLUB RECEIVE:

• A printed copy of the annual Roll of Donors and the College Record in which members receive special recognition* • An invitation to an annual special recognition day, including a talk, luncheon and a performance by members of the College • A commemorative William of Durham Club pin • Inheritance Tax Benefits Univ is a Registered Charity (number 1141259) and so all legacies to the College are exempt from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. INCOMING RESOURCES 2014/15

FROM FRANK MARSHALL, ESTATES BURSAR

£15.9

For the College, as for others, the general economic background remains fairly challenging with only moderate economic growth, earnings growth and investment income growth. The financial support from Old Members has made a great deal of difference to the College’s ability to sustain its academic and non-academic provision and to pursue new initiatives, including wider access and deeper student support, especially graduate scholarships. Whilst economy must be exercised, the additional support we have received has prevented the years of austerity being also years of stagnation. Without that support, it would have been very difficult to maintain, let alone improve, our offering.

million

Donations & Legacies 33% Endowment Income 30%

In other ways, too, this has been a year of initiatives. In April 2015, the College issued bonds with a 50-year term at a fixed interest rate of 3.068% on covenants appropriate to investment grade debt. Interest rates were at an unusually low level and a longer term than usual was available. Indeed 100-year debt would have been a practical possibility. However, though satisfying, this would have been

markedly more expensive than 50 years (1% per annum more). The proceeds of the issue will be invested gradually with the aim of building up a surplus of income over the cost of borrowing, and growing that surplus over time. There will be no spending spree, but rather a contribution to the College’s finances that will come in gradually (and unevenly) over the long term. Univ was the first Oxford college to issue a bond and according to the Financial Times, the interest rate on our debt was the lowest from a UK higher educational institution.

RESOURCES E XPENDED 2014/15

The more visible milestones were in respect of our drive to renew the premises. The Goodhart Building refurbishment, which was generously supported by donors, has been a great success. This substantial and important facility now achieves what is required to meet modern needs and aspirations.Turning northwards, the longrunning discussions with the charity Fairfield Residential Home, culminated in planning permission being granted for a new home for the elderly and new student accommodation. This will also enlarge the College’s north Oxford site, off Staverton Road, giving further interesting possibilities for the future.

2014/15 ANNUAL FUND

ANNUAL FUND GIFTS IN 2014/15, BY AREA:

FROM JOSIE TURNER, ANNUAL FUND MANAGER

Total raised:

It has been a remarkable year. Old Members from across the globe and the generations contributed new gifts and pledges providing just under £1,150,000 in support. This figure is an all-time high for the College and reflects a 4% increase in overall funds secured. In total, 2,475 Old Members took part, which is the highest number of donors the College has ever seen in a single year, representing 35.59% of Old Members.

£1.15 million

Univ is particularly grateful to the 1,064 Old Members worldwide who took the time to share College experiences and careers advice with current students during our telephone campaigns in January and April. Over two thirds of those we spoke to chose to make a gift, raising a combined total of £518,000.This accounts for almost 45% of the total commitments raised by the Annual Fund in 2014/15.

Undesignated 63.95% Postgraduate Scholarships 12.24% Bursaries & Access 7.03% Tutorial Support 5.19% Buildings & Facilities 4.77% Student Support 4.66% Sports & Societies 2.17% 16

Special thanks go to the class of 1965, who raised approximately £200,000 through their fiftieth anniversary fundraising appeal. The appeal will support two new funds for undergraduates:The Class of 1965 Bursary & Access Fund and The Class of 1965 Academic Opportunity Fund. The College thanks everyone who donated so generously. We also thank the 40 students in our 2015 graduating class who made a leaving gift to the College. This year, two thirds of the gifts we received were unrestricted, providing us with the flexibility to apply these funds to the area of greatest need. The remainder of our donors directed their contributions towards a wide range of areas in College, including needs-based bursaries, postgraduate scholarships, tutorial support and the long-awaited renovation of the Goodhart Building. This support will help the College enhance the opportunities it provides for students, ensuring that finances are never a barrier to these experiences. It will also help to further Univ’s position on the global stage, ensuring that the College is able to attract the best students and academics We are truly grateful to all of our donors for the loyalty and generosity they have shown to Univ, and hope your support will continue in the coming year, helping the College achieve even greater things. Thank you.

In my time on the JCR committee, I was fortunate enough to see how Old Members’ contributions to the College were put to use. Seeing the positive impact it made on the student body was more than enough to convince me that I wanted to, and why I continue to, contribute. MINESH SHAH 2004, PHYSICS

LEAVING

LEGACY TO

A

UNIV

Making provision for Univ in your will is a particularly personal and thoughtful way of supporting the College. Legacies have been and continue to be an enormously important source of funds for the College; indeed, were it not for William of Durham’s foresight and legacy gift that was realised in 1249 to support scholars in Oxford, Univ might not be here today.

The Overbrook Foundation

The William of Durham Club

The Pepamir Foundation

recognises the generosity of those who have made a future provision for Univ, and meets annually for a special recognition day in College. While we hope these gifts will not be realised for years to come, we give thanks today to all those listed opposite, and those who have chosen to remain anonymous, for their quiet generosity.

SINGLE AND REGULAR GIFTS

MAKING A

GIFTIN

Single gifts can be made by cheque or credit/debit card. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and valued; even the most modest of donations not only show your loyalty to Univ but collectively make a vital contribution to the College.

2015/16

Regular gifts can be set up for a period of one to four years, on either a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. They are of great benefit to Univ as they provide a guaranteed flow of income to the College for the medium term, and enable you to spread the cost of your gift. Your single or regular gift can be made: Online Visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/give By Post Send a cheque to University College, Oxford OX1 4BH with a completed Gift Form* (available at www.univ.ox.ac.uk/maximiseyourgift) By Phone Call the Development Office on +44 (0)1865 286208

Gifts Of Shares Giving via shares is one of the most tax efficient ways of making a charitable gift and a powerful way to support Univ. Gifts of shares in the UK receive income tax relief of 100 per cent of their market value. If shares worth £100k are donated tax relief based on this will be received in full, i.e. £40k at the higher rate of tax. This tax break goes straight to the donor and, in addition, gifts of shares do not attract Capital Gains Tax. Visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/maximiseyourgift for further details.

Higher rate tax payers can also benefit from tax relief by claiming back the difference between the higher rates of tax of 40 or 45 per cent and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of their gross donation. Visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/maximiseyourgift for further details.

Legacy Giving There are a variety of types of legacy that can be left to Univ, including residuary and pecuniary legacies, and gifts-in-kind. For more information, visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/legacies

THANK YOU

From Overseas There are ways for you to give to Univ tax-efficiently in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Visit www.univ.ox.ac.uk/giving-overseas for details. *Qualifies for membership of the 1249 Society if aged 30 or above (only £124.90 per annum required if under 30) 37
