The Parkside National Small Print Exhibition was founded at UW-­Parkside in 1987 by printmaking professor Doug DeVinny. The tradition continues this spring in the Fine Arts Gallery located in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for the Arts and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin Parkside. 7KLV H[KLELWLRQ KDV VKRZQ WKH Ă€QHVW H[DPSOHV RI VPDOO IRUPDW original prints created by artists working throughout the United States for over two decades.

The Parkside National Small Print Exhibition started humbly in 1987 by University of :LVFRQVLQ 3DUNVLGH 3URIHVVRU (PHULWXV 'RXJ 'H9LQQ\ ,W GLGQ·W WDNH ORQJ IRU PH WR meet Doug after taking the helm of the printmaking studios here at Parkside last DXWXPQ , IRXQG KLP D JHQHURXV HGXFDWRU DQG JLIWHG DUWLVW ZKR , QRZ KDYH WKH SOHDVXUH RI FDOOLQJ P\ IULHQG 7KURXJK WKLV IULHQGVKLS , OHDUQHG WKH 3DUNVLGH 1DWLRQDO 6PDOO 3ULQW ([KLELWLRQ ZDV ERUQ IURP QRW RQO\ 'RXJ·V ORYH RI SULQWPDNLQJ EXW DOVR from a desire to tighten the weave of the printmaking community on a national level -­ to create community. $V WKH 8: 3DUNVLGH *DOOHULHV EHJDQ SODQQLQJ IRU WKLV \HDU·V H[KLELW , GHFLGHG to familiarize myself with the history of the exhibition by rummaging through old FDWDORJV 7KHUH , FDPH DFURVV D PDVV RI SULQW KLVWRU\ DORQJ ZLWK VRPH IDPLOLDU SULQWV from some familiar faces. $IWHU UHYLHZLQJ WZR GHFDGHV RI FDWDORJV LW ZDV FOHDU WKDW VXVWDLQLQJ WKH OLIH RI DQ H[KLELWLRQ ZLWK WKLV PXFK KLVWRU\ ZRXOG QRW EH ZLWKRXW LWV GLIÀFXOWLHV ,Q WKLQNLQJ DERXW WKH IXWXUH RI WKH H[KLELWLRQ JDOOHU\ VWDII KDG WR UHWKLQN WKH FKRLFH RI MXURU LQ WHUPV RI KRZ WKH MXURU FRXOG DXJPHQW WKLV KLVWRU\ DQG KRZ WKH MXURU·V VHOHFWLRQV FRXOG JLYH us a glimpse into the current state of small-­scale image making from contemporary printmakers. Fresh perspectives from the gallery staff and a nation of ambitious printmakers are WKH OLQFKSLQV RI VXFFHVV DQG VXUYLYDO RI WKH 3DUNVLGH 1DWLRQDO 6PDOO 3ULQW ([KLELWLRQ ,Q WKLV H[KLELWLRQ WKH MXURU 0LFKDHO %DUQHV WDNHV XV LQWR D ZRUOG RI SULQWV WKDW VWUDGGOHV the astoundingly simple and the impressively robust. Keen tonal knowledge and unique mark making are hallmarks of his selections. ,W ZDV D SOHDVXUH DQG KRQRU WR KDYH EHHQ LQYLWHG WR VHOHFW WKH ZRUN IRU WKH WK Parkside National Small Print Exhibition. The history and reputation of this exhibition VWDQG VHOHFW DPRQJVW WKH SUHVWLJLRXV MXULHG H[KLELWLRQV GHGLFDWHG WR WKH SULQWPDNLQJ medium that have existed over the past several decades. Printmaking is a medium WKDW , FKHULVK DQG LV DW WKH FHQWHU RI P\ ZRUOG 7KRVH ZKR KDYH EHHQ ELWWHQ E\ WKLV VDPH EXJ NQRZ LW LV VRPHWKLQJ WKDW LV DGGLFWLYH WKDW JUDEV \RX DQG SXOOV \RX LQ ² WKH smell of the ink; wiping an etching plate and watching the image magically emerge; drawing on a beautifully prepared lithographic stone; the pull of the squeegewe; the sound of rolling out the ink; being one with the wood while carving a relief block. , FRXOG JR RQ DQG RQ DQG HDFK SULQWPDNHU ZLOO KDYH WKHLU RZQ UHODWLRQVKLS ZLWK WKH PHGLXP ,W SUHVHQWV VR PDQ\ SRVVLELOLWLHV WR WKH DUWLVW IRU XWLOL]LQJ LQ LWV SXUHVW RI WUDGLWLRQDO IRUPV DQG LQ WKH FRQWH[W RI WKH FRQWHPSRUDU\ DUW ZRUOG WR LQFRUSRUDWLQJ LQWR DQ\ W\SH RI PXOWL PHGLD SURMHFW ,W LV DQ DUWLVWLF WRRO LQ WKH JUDQG FRQWHPSRUDU\ SDOOHW DQG DOVR D PHDQV WR DQ HQG ZLWKLQ LWVHOI $ORQJ ZLWK DOO RI WKLV SULQWPDNLQJ RIIHUV VRPHWKLQJ HOVH WKDW , ÀQG UDWKHU XQLTXH IURP WKH RWKHU GLVFLSOLQHV DQG WKDW LV FRPPXQLW\ , DWWULEXWH PXFK RI WKLV WR WKH VWXGLR HQYLURQPHQW ZKHUH DUWLVWV DUH ZRUNLQJ VLGH E\ VLGH VKDULQJ D SUHVV DVVLVWLQJ HDFK RWKHU LQ SULQWLQJ RU FROODERUDWLQJ in any endless number of ways. This community extends to the international level. An exhibition of this nature does not necessarily permit including the full spectrum of the contemporary SULQWPDNLQJ ZRUOG GXH WR WKH OLPLWDWLRQV LQ VL]H DQG IRUPDW EXW LW GRHV DOORZ IRU WKH RSSRUWXQLW\ WR ]RRP LQ RQ WKH WUDGLWLRQDO DVSHFWV RI WKH PHGLXP WKDW , ORYH DQG FHOHEUDWH DQG WR GHPRQVWUDWH WKH PDJLF WKDW DUWLVWV FDQ DFKLHYH ZLWK WKHVH WRROV :KLOH , HPEUDFH DOO RI WKH QHZ GHYHORSPHQWV WKDW FRQWLQXH WR HPHUJH DQG WKH LQQRYDWLRQV WKDW DUWLVWV SUHVHQW LQ WKHLU ZRUN , KDYH D WUXH ORYH IRU WKH WUDGLWLRQV RI the various print media. One of the HVVHQWLDO FRPSRQHQWV WKDW , DOZD\V ORRN IRU LV D EDODQFH EHWZHHQ D PDVWHU\ RI WHFKQLTXH ZLWK D VWURQJ FRQFHSWXDO YRLFH :LWK WKLV LQ PLQG LW ZDV D JUHDW VHUYLFH WR EH SURYLGHG ZLWK WKH VWDWHPHQWV RI HDFK DUWLVW DOORZLQJ PH JUHDWHU LQVLJKW LQWR their personal worlds that they strive to communicate through their work.
