The University’s Coat of Arms, granted in 1985, contains the Arms of the New University of Ulster with a number of modifications which illustrate the joining of the Ulster Polytechnic and the New University of Ulster in 1984. The most easily recognisable feature in the Coat of Arms is the shield. This carries a basic design of six alternating panels of red (gules) and silver (argent) suggesting the six counties of Northern Ireland. Gules and Argent derive from the Northern Ireland Coat of Arms and the red hand derives from Ulster. The lamp in the lower part of the shield symbolises study and enlightenment. Thus two ideas, university and Ulster, are clearly asserted in the design. The shield also has a narrow band; shield shaped and inset clear of the main outline. This is called an orle and it is counterchanged, i.e., it runs gold or yellow where the background is red and red where the background is silver or white. The orle represents unity and interconnection and is particularly appropriate to a university in which degree structure is designed to allow students to combine interdisciplinary interests. Above the shield is a helmet and immediately above that is a torse or a wreath, i.e., a band alternating the gules and argent of the shield, which also features in the mantling. This has the appearance of a foliage-like decoration around the helmet and shield. Above the helmet and torse is the crest. This consists of two salmon, leaping in saltire, over a yew branch. Again the two salmon, representing wisdom, stand for the coming together of the two institutions over the yew, which symbolises immortality. The antelope supporter, on the Arms left side, known as sinister, originates from the Hamilton family as a tribute to the New University of Ulster’s first Chancellor, the late 4th Duke of Abercorn. On the Arms right side or dexter, is an Irish elk which has been taken from the Province’s Arms reflecting the various sites or campuses and the word Ulster as part of the Polytechnic’s title.

The symbolic meaning of the colours emanates from very early history. Argent – Silver: which is sometimes shown as white; suggests purity, chastity, humility, innocence and happiness. Gules – Red: represents charity, courage, valour, patriotism and creative power. Or – Gold or Yellow: depicts justice and mercy, generosity and defender of the good. The University Mace Where the University’s Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor presides at a graduation ceremony the University Mace is present. It is, therefore, a symbol of the University’s graduation ceremony. The University Mace is made of silver and it was designed, constructed and engraved by Mr Mike McCrory, former member of the University’s School of Art and Design. The intricate engraving on the Mace represents elements drawn from the University Coat of Arms and symbolises the University’s four campuses and their integral role in the Institution.

A Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor Dear Graduate, I am delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you and your guests to this graduation ceremony.

Professor Richard Barnett Vice-Chancellor

Graduation ceremonies are the highlight of the University’s academic calendar representing, as they do, the public recognition of the achievements of our students. Through the award of honorary doctorates they also provide us with the opportunity to recognise those who have achieved distinction, be it in their careers or in service to the community. At our winter ceremonies we also take the opportunity to recognise publicly members of University staff who have excelled in teaching, or in research or in academic enterprise. Above all, graduation ceremonies are a time for both celebration and for giving thanks and my colleagues and I share with you in celebrating your success. We are also pleased to share with you in thanking those who have helped you to reach this milestone in your life, especially your family and friends. In a very real sense, your success is their success also. And, I know that you will understand if I take this opportunity to thank the staff of the University, of all categories, who have assisted you in your studies.

At this ceremony we will also be welcoming you as a graduate of the University of Ulster (and for some of you, especially those gaining postgraduate awards, doing so for the second or third time). As an Ulster graduate you will automatically become a member of the University of Ulster Alumni Association. Membership includes a complimentary subscription to our Alumni magazine, The Ulster Graduate, which is published twice a year and will help you to keep in touch with developments at the University and with friends that you have made whilst studying with us. The Alumni Association has members throughout the world and a number of branches of the Association have been established at home and overseas. I also encourage you to make good use of the alumni website and email directory at http://alumni.ulster.ac.uk. I very much hope that you and your guests enjoy today’s ceremony. And, once again, congratulations on your success. With best wishes

Professor Richard Barnett

The Graduation Ceremony The Graduation Ceremony is the occasion when students receive their award. It is an auspicious and formal event, a rite of passage that celebrates each graduate’s achievement and marks the transition from university to the wider world. The University’s graduation ceremonies are held on two occasions each year: the winter ceremonies in December and the summer ceremonies in June and July. The first ceremony on each occasion is known as the Congregation and it is at this ceremony that the Chancellor or, in the Chancellor’s absence, the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the University’s Statutes, confers “degrees and other academic distinctions” on all students who have been deemed eligible by Senate. At the start of each ceremony music accompanies the arrival of the academic procession. It is led by the Stave Bearer, followed by members of the academic staff of the faculty from which students are graduating today. They take their place on the stage or platform. These are followed by members of Senate and Council. Senate is responsible for the academic policy of the University and is composed almost entirely of academic staff. Council is the governing body of the University and is responsible for the overall strategic direction

6

and governance of the University and over half of its membership is drawn from outside the University. Next come the honorary awardees, senior administrative staff, Deans and Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Provosts. The Deans and Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Provosts are senior academic staff appointed for periods of four years to be responsible for managerial functions within the University. Finally come the Honorary Treasurer and Pro-Chancellors who are the most senior members of Council, the Vice-Chancellor and the Chancellor. Where the Chancellor or ViceChancellor preside at a ceremony they are preceded by the Mace-Bearer carrying the University’s Mace. When all members of the academic procession have reached their places the Ceremony begins. The ceremony is presided over by either the Chancellor or the Vice-Chancellor and the ceremony begins with the presiding officer’s opening address which reviews the major issues affecting higher education nationally and the University in particular. Each year the University recognises the outstanding contribution that a number of individuals have made to academic life or to society at large. At this point a senior member of the University will present the

individual with a distinguished award or fellowship. These are not awarded at every ceremony; more than one award or honorary degree may be awarded at a ceremony. Graduating students are presented for their awards by faculty. As the name of each graduate is read out by the Dean of the Faculty, he or she proceeds across the stage. Their achievement is recognised by shaking hands with the presiding officer who will offer his congratulations. Graduates and diplomates collect their award certificate prior to returning to their seats. The Honorary Graduate addresses the congregation, ending with an expression of thanks to the University, not only for his or her own award, but also on behalf of today’s graduates. A representative of the student body will speak on behalf of those graduating today. At the close of the formal proceedings the academic procession leaves the Hall in the reverse order to its arrival, being led out by the Chancellor or the Vice-Chancellor, whichever is presiding. The new graduates and diplomates join the procession after the academic staff to symbolise their new status. They meet up with their family, friends and tutors for refreshments and to talk and to take photographs.

University of Ulster Awards 2010 First Trust Bank/ University of Ulster Distinguished Graduate of the Year Kyle McCallan, MBE, BA Sports Studies 1998, PGCE 2001 Belfast/Jordanstown – Monday 13 December 2010 at 3.30pm

Kyle McCallan has had a long and distinguished career as an Irish senior international cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and off spin bowler. He has represented Ulster (Northern Cricket Union) and Ireland at every age group level, from under 13 to senior international level. He has been capped more times by the Ireland senior cricket team than any other player in history.

Following his debut in 1996, he went on to represent Ireland in the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the 2000, 2002 and 2004 European Championships, captaining the team during the Championships in 2000. The highlight of his career, however, was representing Ireland at the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies in which Ireland qualified for the Super 8 stage – beating Pakistan and Bangladesh along the way – to finish in eighth place in a 16-team tournament. Kyle was an integral part of the team and played in all the matches in the World Cup and in all of Ireland’s one day international matches until he retired. Kyle also played in the T20 World Cup in England in 2009, again reaching the Super 8 stage.

He announced his retirement from international cricket in December 2009, after a record 226 caps. He also captained Ireland a record 54 times. Kyle is a teacher at Grosvenor Grammar School and was awarded an MBE in the 2010 Birthday Honours List for services to cricket in Northern Ireland.

As a student, Kyle captained the University team to victory in the Irish University Cricket competition. He also represented the University in rugby and played in the annual Colours Match against QUB. Kyle was the recipient of the University’s Performance Sports Scholarship for the duration of his studies.

University of Ulster Awards 2010 Distinguished Teaching Fellowship (Team Award) Team Members:

Dr Aine McKillop, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences Dr Jacqueline O’Connor, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences Coleraine/Magee – Thursday 16 December 2010 at 11.00am

Dr Aine McKillop and Dr Jacqueline O’Connor from the School of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences have a long and successful record of leadership in teaching and learning at Ulster. Their combined focus on lifelong learning, professionalism, employability and skills development has cultivated a student-centred approach to teaching that motivates and challenges students to achieve their potential and become independent learners. Over the years Dr McKillop and Dr O’Connor have devoted considerable effort to initiatives that have had both an immediate and a long-term impact on student-centred learning, graduate knowledge and

associated skills at Ulster. The partnership evolved following the establishment of eLearning in the School of Biomedical Sciences, where they collaborated, formulated ideas, and established a shared future vision of the now highly-topical area of professional development and lifelong skills acquisition. As educators, the team considered new innovative teaching approaches to develop the full range of skills and abilities that all bioscience graduates need, providing a forum where learning is a partnership. The team have successfully helped students undertake meaningful learning in a professional ‘real-life’ context, in both on-campus and online environments, and have taught students to take a practice-based approach to their study and work, integrating knowledge from diverse disciplines – valuable skills that readily translate to the workplace. The team continues to highlight and share their success, ideas and expertise. Their activities meet a number of key elements of the University Corporate Plan and Teaching and Learning Strategy, including enhancement of the quality of the student experience; supporting a diverse range of students; promoting and fostering creativity; and promoting the student’s employability skills base.

Professor Paul Moore joined the University in 1999 and is currently Head of the School of Creative Arts. The key theme in his teaching and learning work has been the relationship between theory and practice, a focus which led to the development of the Creative Technologies degree on the Magee campus in 2007. His main research interests are sound art, the digital arts and, in particular, the relationship between sonic experience and identity. Most recently his research work has become more exhibition-based which has included extensive work on how emerging technologies have impacted on teaching and learning in England, South Africa and Namibia. Professor Moore has been a member of key committees, boards and panels both at national and international level. He has helped shape policies through his membership of the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission (now Screen NI), the Ofcom Content Board, and as a member of the

10

In his spare time he is a presenter for BBC Radio Ulster and Radio Foyle and has written and presented documentaries for Radio Ulster and BBC Radio 5 Live.

Dr David Barr Coleraine/Magee – Thursday 16 December 2010 at 11.00am

Since his appointment in 2005, Dr David Barr has made a significant contribution to teaching at Ulster – particularly in the development of effective multimedia approaches to facilitating student learning. Initially he taught French within the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures but now teaches within the School of Media, Film and Journalism. He has piloted a number of technology-enhanced teaching initiatives, including the use of Skype to

provide studies advice to students on their intercalary year and has developed banks of learning resources that are now used by universities throughout the UK. As the teaching and learning coordinator for the Faculty of Arts, he has played an important role in enhancing the overall learning experience for students in the Faculty. Dr Barr is currently the UK representative for the European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning, as well as a member of the academic advisory board of the international ReCALL journal and a reviewer for two of the other four major international journals in this area. As a result of his reputation in multimedia pedagogy, he was awarded the WorldCALL (World Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning) conference in 2013, which he will host in Glasgow. Dr Barr has enhanced the international profile of Ulster through his editorships and membership of highprofile bodies and panels. He has published one book and a range of internationally peer-reviewed articles and has disseminated his research findings beyond these shores, having led workshops on software and the design of course materials throughout Europe and North America.

University of Ulster Awards 2010 Senior Distinguished Research Fellowship Professor Kader Parahoo Coleraine/Magee – Thursday 16 December 2010 at 3.30pm

Welcome to the University of Ulster Alumni Association Graduation does not mean the end of your relationship with the University of Ulster – it merely marks the transition from being a student to being an alumnus or alumna. What does the word ‘alumni’ mean? ‘Alumni’ means the former students of a school or university. ‘Alumni’ is the plural, ‘alumnae’ is the female plural. The singular for a male is ‘alumnus’, whereas a female is an ‘alumna’. The Alumni Association is here to help you keep in touch with the University and with each other. Membership is free and automatic on graduation, so wherever you find yourself in the future, you will be part of a worldwide network of over 140,000 University of Ulster alumni. Members receive the magazine The Ulster Graduate twice a year and social events and reunions are organised for members in Northern Ireland and by branches around the world. As well as a presence in Northern Ireland the Alumni Association currently has branches in London, Bangladesh, Bavaria, China, Hong Kong and Boston, with more planned for the future. If there is no branch near you, and you would be willing to help set one up, please contact the Alumni Relations Office.

54

Our web pages, Ulster Alumni Online, contain details of our regional and country contacts, information on forthcoming events, the ability to view and update your own details and a directory of other Ulster alumni. Register at http://alumni.ulster.ac.uk. Registration is only available to graduates and staff of Ulster. The Alumni Association is your association and we welcome suggestions for improving the services we offer. The Ulster Graduate carries features on alumni, and we are always pleased to receive updates on what you are doing and news such as marriages, births and new jobs for publication. The Alumni Relations Office is also responsible for the sale of University memorabilia and the University Visa Card. This offers graduates an excellent credit card as well as a way to help current students at no cost to the cardholder. The University receives a royalty payment for each card issued as well as a percentage of transactions. The royalties are used to buy additional material for the libraries. On graduation you also become a member of the University’s Convocation – the graduate voice of the University. Convocation sponsors the Student of the Year Award for ‘significant personal achievement or a substantial contribution to the life of the University,

its students or the community’. Further details are available on Ulster Alumni Online. On behalf of the Alumni Association may I congratulate you on your achievement in attaining your award at the 2010 graduation ceremonies, and extend our best wishes for your future. Please help us by keeping us informed of your new address whenever you move. A details update form is available on the web pages.
