It is through service that we integrate the other values with a bias toward action. This issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit is a celebration of our integration of the value of service…as it’s being “made real” by our students, our alumni, our faculty and staff members, our friends, and our donors-on-campus and across Will County, the State of Illinois, our country and the world. While we’re only able to capture and share a small part of the breadth and depth of activities of the USF family, I think that you’ll be able to look with pride upon how we’re living our mission and honoring our Sisters’ legacy.

Even folks on campus have been amazed at the fast progress being made on the new science hall, being constructed at the corner of Wilcox and Douglas Streets! MOCK T RIA L S U CC E S S The Mock Trial Team has been off to an amazing start, with Mock Trial Team Captain Miranda Castro bringing home a Top Five Attorney Award from the Coastal Carolina Mock Trial Tournament, held Oct. 15–16 in South Carolina. The team has had numerous competitions since then, and will host its own annual collegiate Mock Trial Invitational tournament Jan. 21–22, 2017. Missie can be seen each and every day visiting with everyone in the office to be sure that all needs are being met and sharing, too, how appreciative and grateful she is for all the work that is being accomplished. Missie embodies service in how she actualizes the golden rule of

servant leadership: “Lead others the way you would like to be led, serve others the way you would like to be served, teach others the way you would like to be taught.” She places the needs of others above her own and genuinely cares about those that she serves. Missie exhibits integrity with apparent ease, presumably because

it is deeply woven into who she is as a daughter, wife, mother, friend and co-worker. It is evident to all who work closely with Missie that her personal interactions are both authentic and meaningful. She listens intently, thinks proactively, speaks truthfully, and approaches decisions fairly. Missie displays compassion, believing that teachers teach PEOPLE first

The university’s Eta Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Catholic Scholastic Honor Society, inducted new members in November. The guest speaker was Sarah Reznicek, the director of family faith formation and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) at St. Jude Parish in Joliet. Reznicek lives and works in Lockport at Nativity House, a Catholic Worker community and a house of hospitality for first-time expectant mothers, committed to living out the Church’s Catholic Social Teaching. Inductees were Karina Alonso, Genevra Barrett, Doreen Begley, Heather Domanski, Medelia Garcia, Skyler Kern, Cheri Keuck, Abby Kieffer, Allison McDermott, Ashley Montgomery, Abygail Padilla, Benjamin Pringle, Fernanda Quevedo, Tiffany Scott, Patrick Sennett, Hannah Tadey, Cailee Tylin, Anna Wahdan, Caitlyn Waite, Janelle Weikel and Jorie Welsh.

In October, the USF TV Club and Communication & Media Arts Department hosted Justin Jackola, of Jjack productions, who presented a workshop on drone videography. Jackola talked about different commercial uses and then participants went outside for a demonstration. Jackola captured some stunning footage of the USF campus. The footage inspired USF to hire alumnus Brendan Walsh ’05 to take drone footage of the USF main campus and the new St. Clare Campus. The footage will be used by the USF admissions team and is being used as opening credits for the USF cable series “Exploring Joliet” (which can be viewed by visiting the “Campus Media” tab on the USF website). Social Work Club to the Rescue

The Social Work Club, in conjunction with the Social Work Department, reached out to the Salvation Army in December about participating in the Angel Tree project. The Salvation Army said they were swamped with new organizations wanting to participate and mentioned that another way to help was to donate to their food bank, which was running extremely low. Without hesitation, the social work students took action. They talked with SGA, promoted the drive in classes, and sent out emails to the university asking for assistance in collecting items. Many non-perishable food items were donated in addition to toiletries and other useful items.

The students also raised almost $200 last month in a bake sale. All

items were baked by students and sold on campus over a period of two days. The bake sale took place around Veterans Day, and all proceeds will be given to The Soldiers Project to benefit veterans.

And if you want a special experience, use your VR (virtual reality) gear for a really exciting tour! Even a colleague considering an adult degree completion program or grad program might enjoy learning more about the University of St. Francis. Each group of three to four nursing students taught health class students and were responsible for content to fill the whole 50-minute class. Some groups designed games to enhance the learning environment, which the high school students were very receptive to. Overall, LCON students were successful in discussing important yet sensitive health topics in a light-hearted way, so the high school students could gain understanding without being intimidated to ask questions.

Santillo crossed the line in 25th place among 331 runners with an eight-kilometer time of 25:10 to earn a spot on the All-America podium in his final collegiate cross country race. Juniors Cam Knudsen and Brian Blaylock finished 24th and 38th, respectively, to round out the Saints’ top three. The University of St. Francis women’s cross country team captured 21st place at the 2016 NAIA National Championship meet in November at North Farm Cross Country Course. Junior Ashlee Knott covered the five-kilometer course in 18:05 to lead the Saints’ contingent with a 39th place finish among 334 competitors. Junior Catherine Crosson was next for USF, placing 68th, and junior Lesley Lopez finished 94th to round out the Saints’ top three.
