Service and Leadership at USF

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Called to Serve… Called to Lead

I, also, think that it’s appropriate that you’ll be receiving this issue shortly after our country celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and shortly before the 49th anniversary of “The Drum Major Instinct”

of St. Francis provides. Together, we can ensure that USF has both relevance and impact in its coming second century. When people ask or I speak about “the USF difference”—i.e., what makes USF the warm, wonderful place that it is to learn about yourself, about the world, and about the goodness of God—I anchor my comments in our mission of “preparing women and men to contribute to the world through service and leadership.” Then, I explain that we do this inspired by our Catholic Franciscan values of respect, integrity, compassion and service. It is through service that we integrate the other values with a bias toward action. This issue of Engaging Mind & Spirit is a celebration of our integration of the value of service…as it’s being “made real” by our students, our alumni, our faculty and staff members, our friends, and our donors-on-campus and across Will County, the State of Illinois, our country and the world. While we’re only able to capture and share a small part of the breadth and depth of activities of the USF family, I think that you’ll be able to look with pride upon how we’re living our mission and honoring our Sisters’ legacy.

Peace and all good things,

USF E N JOYED “LI GHTI NG UP TH E HOLI DAYS” WITH CIT Y OF JOLIET

Even folks on campus have been amazed at the fast progress being made on the new science hall, being constructed at the corner of Wilcox and Douglas Streets! Students are looking forward to the completion of this state-of-the-art structure and for courses to begin next fall. To keep checking in on progress, visit stfrancis.edu/science-hall.

For many years, University of St. Francis employees and students have celebrated the start of the Christmas season by gathering downtown the Friday after Thanksgiving and participating in the Light Up the Holidays Parade & Tree Lighting. Jessica Conte, from USF’s

candidate truly demonstrates the four Franciscan values of respect, service, integrity and compassion. Rolinitis’s colleagues contributed to the writing of her nomination by

highlighting how she lives USF’s core values every single day. Some excerpts are as follows: Respect is a Franciscan core value that Missie truly embraces in how

she helps to create a caring community at work by respecting the dignity and efforts of each individual. Missie can be seen each and every day visiting with everyone in the office to be sure that all needs are being met and sharing, too, how appreciative and grateful she is for all the work that is being accomplished. Missie embodies service in how she actualizes the golden rule of

servant leadership: “Lead others the way you would like to be led, serve others the way you would like to be served, teach others the way you would like to be taught.” She places the needs of others above her own and genuinely cares about those that she serves. Missie exhibits integrity with apparent ease, presumably because

it is deeply woven into who she is as a daughter, wife, mother, friend and co-worker. It is evident to all who work closely with Missie that her personal interactions are both authentic and meaningful. She listens intently, thinks proactively, speaks truthfully, and approaches decisions fairly. Missie displays compassion, believing that teachers teach PEOPLE first

and subjects second, and that is the approach she takes in all she does—never forgetting the human element and extending compassion and grace to the educators she teaches in her courses and those whose academic programming she helps to plan.

The university’s Eta Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Catholic Scholastic Honor Society, inducted new members in November. The guest speaker was Sarah Reznicek, the director of family faith formation and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) at St. Jude Parish in Joliet. Reznicek lives and works in Lockport at Nativity House, a Catholic Worker community and a house of hospitality for first-time expectant mothers, committed to living out the Church’s Catholic Social Teaching. Inductees were Karina Alonso, Genevra Barrett, Doreen Begley, Heather Domanski, Medelia Garcia, Skyler Kern, Cheri Keuck, Abby Kieffer, Allison McDermott, Ashley Montgomery, Abygail Padilla, Benjamin Pringle, Fernanda Quevedo, Tiffany Scott, Patrick Sennett, Hannah Tadey, Cailee Tylin, Anna Wahdan, Caitlyn Waite, Janelle Weikel and Jorie Welsh.

In October, the USF TV Club and Communication & Media Arts Department hosted Justin Jackola, of Jjack productions, who presented a workshop on drone videography. Jackola talked about different commercial uses and then participants went outside for a demonstration. Jackola captured some stunning footage of the USF campus. The footage inspired USF to hire alumnus Brendan Walsh ’05 to take drone footage of the USF main campus and the new St. Clare Campus. The footage will be used by the USF admissions team and is being used as opening credits for the USF cable series “Exploring Joliet” (which can be viewed by visiting the “Campus Media” tab on the USF website). Social Work Club to the Rescue

I N TE RN ATI ON AL PROGRAMS OF F I CE AND STUDENTS CE LE B RATE CHRI S TMAS

The Social Work Club, in conjunction with the Social Work Department, reached out to the Salvation Army in December about participating in the Angel Tree project. The Salvation Army said they were swamped with new organizations wanting to participate and mentioned that another way to help was to donate to their food bank, which was running extremely low. Without hesitation, the social work students took action. They talked with SGA, promoted the drive in classes, and sent out emails to the university asking for assistance in collecting items. Many non-perishable food items were donated in addition to toiletries and other useful items.

The students also raised almost $200 last month in a bake sale. All

items were baked by students and sold on campus over a period of two days. The bake sale took place around Veterans Day, and all proceeds will be given to The Soldiers Project to benefit veterans.

Alumni, has it been “ages” since you’ve been to the USF campus? Take a virtual tour! Haven’t visited St. Francis since your graduation? Wondering what your old stomping grounds look like now? What are they referring to when they talk about USF’s downtown St. Bonaventure Campus? What type of technology is in the new Leach College of Nursing facilities in Guardian Angel Hall at St. Clare Campus? If you have some of these same questions and feel compelled to know, why not take a virtual campus tour of your alma mater? Released in December, the new online tour gives visitors a student-led tour of the campus and facilities, including the newest additions of Sts. Bonaventure and Clare Campuses. You’ll also get a glimpse of the new LaVerne & Dorothy Brown Science Hall, now under construction. At each of the 20 building stops, you will have options to explore facilities further with either 360 views of a location, still photography or a link to a YouTube video. And if you want a special experience, use your VR (virtual reality) gear for a really exciting tour! If you enjoy the tour, share the link with a prospective student—your son, daughter, niece, nephew or neighbor. Even a colleague considering an adult degree completion program or grad program might enjoy learning more about the University of St. Francis. The next time someone tells you that they haven’t heard of the University of St. Francis, please share the link to the virtual tour, available by visiting stfrancis.edu, so they can “see” our top-notch university for themselves.

Business Course Embraces Service Learning Service learning is an important aspect of education for students at the University of St. Francis. All members of the USF community, from faculty to students to administrators, strongly support the initiative as a means of course enrichment and personal development. The University of St. Francis women’s cross country team captured 21st place at the 2016 NAIA National Championship meet in November at North Farm Cross Country Course. Junior Ashlee Knott covered the five-kilometer course in 18:05 to lead the Saints’ contingent with a 39th place finish among 334 competitors. Junior Catherine Crosson was next for USF, placing 68th, and junior Lesley Lopez finished 94th to round out the Saints’ top three. In November, University of St. Francis junior defensive back Josh Woodard was selected to the 2016 Academic All-America College Division Football Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Junior Leah Alles was named an honorable mention All-American and the Mideast Region Libero of the Year, while senior Alyssa Bridleman joined her on the All-Mideast Region First Team. Head Coach Cara Currier was chosen as the Mideast Region Co-Coach of the Year.

SAAC’s Superstars These USF coaches and administrators really stand out to SAAC leaders as individuals who exhibit service and leadership. ACCORDING TO JEFFRY NICHOLS: “Art Campos, head athlete trainer and SAAC advisor. He really looks out for the student-athletes and makes sure that we stay on track as a club on campus. He truly cares for the students and their success on the playing field and in the classroom. He often says "he hears it all" and it’s true because of the atmosphere in the training room. Students talk about their classes and daily lives while getting treatment. Personally, I have looked up to Art as a mentor during my time at St. Francis…he is truly dedicated to the success of athletes!”

ACCORDING TO RENEE MARTIN: “Sam Quigley. Sam is always involved with not just the university but also the community. She helped implement the first annual Haunted Hoops with United Way, volunteers at Daybreak, helps at Operation Christmas and Aunt Mary’s Storybook Project, and much more. Sam is always giving of herself and her time to others and really exhibits the qualities of a great leader. Sam is always pushing us (the women’s basketball team) to not only be better athletes, but better people. She is always willing to help us personally with papers, changing schedules for our classes, internships, and just being there for us. I couldn’t imagine having a better role model as a coach.”
