Master of Arts in Education: Higher Education and Student Affairs

Student Commencement Speaker

Maribel Cruz-Nakahara is a first-generation graduate student in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Master’s program at the School of Education.

She was a recipient of the 2022~2023 Inclusive Community and Justice Fund (ICJF) award for her collaborative work with CULTURA (Co-Treasurer, 2023 & 2024) and the Center for Educational Justice (CEJ) during the 2023 film screening of Mendez v Westminster. This initiative involved partnerships with Dr. Anu Dikeman (UoR), Sandra Robbie (an Emmywinning writer/producer), and Sylvia Mendez (a civil rights activist).

Maribel, the daughter of two immigrant parents from Mexico, earned her undergraduate degree in Chicano Studies with a minor in Native American Studies from UCR.

She has worked with the Graduate Student Association and the SOE Dean’s Office to ensure accessible serving spaces.

O, that dear old U of R, Thy children near and far Will sing to thee and all thy glories tell; Where the orange blossoms grow, And the waters gently flow, That dear old U of R we love so well.

O, that dear old U of R, Whose emblem shines afar, Eternal as the hills we love so well; Where the mountains tall and grand Like an inspiration stand, That dear old U of R we love so well.

O, that dear old U of R, The years can never mar, The memories of thee we love so well; Where the friendships are so dear That we leave them with a tear That dear old U of R we love so well.
