The Level 5 required academic knowledge modules (four stand alone modules) In order to apply for the PQiP at Level 6 each applicant must have a Level 5 or above HEI Award and demonstrate knowledge in the following required academic knowledge areas. This can either be achieved by the recognition of previous academic study or by studying the following standalone knowledge modules at the University of Portsmouth.

Level 6 Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP) The Level 6 Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP) leads to a BA (Hons) Community Justice at the University of Portsmouth and qualified probation officer status. The Level 6 Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP) academic programme of learning will be completed over a nine-month period.

However, activities will take place during the entire 15-month integrated probation officer education and training programme.

The Level 5 Knowledge Modules are available at the beginning of every calendar month and can be studied at your own pace and intensity. Learners are able to submit their assignment at the end of each calendar month. The knowledge modules can be purchased by individuals. See details below.

Gateway Assessment Service The Gateway Assessment Service (GAS) validates your previous academic study of the required knowledge modules. In order to apply for the Level 6 PQiP each applicant must have their previous Level 5 (or higher) higher education award recognised against the Community Justice Learning knowledge modules.

Community Justice Learning at the University of Portsmouth

About us The Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS) at the University of Portsmouth is the largest criminology department of its kind in the UK, with approximately 2000 students.

It offers a wide range of degree programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.

We have more than 60 members of academic staff and offer a wide range of criminology and criminal justice programmes from undergraduate to doctoral level.

We also have significant experience of working with employers to create bespoke educational programmes both at home and internationally.

Our programmes A number of our programmes have been developed either directly or indirectly in relation to employer’s requirements and external professional qualifications and accreditation frameworks.

Overall, the Community Justice team at the University of Portsmouth has in excess of 13 years’ experience delivering the educational component of Probation Officer training.

The University of Portsmouth is one of only three universities approved and contracted by the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) to deliver Community Justice Learning (CJL) and the Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP).

The following validation and learning opportunities are available to individuals who are interested in the various aspects of Community Justice Learning:

The Level 4 Community Justice Preparation Certificate for access to the Level 5 Diploma of HE in Community Justice Award.

The Level 4 Community Justice Preparation Certificate will be completed over a three-month period. The Preparation Certificate will provide a thorough grounding of the range of knowledge, skills and academic qualities you will need for studying at higher education.

Level 5 Diploma of Higher Education in Community Justice Award.

The Level 5 DipHE in Community Justice academic programme of learning will be completed over a 12-month period. During this programme you will study key academic units which are designed to provide the underpinning knowledge to your professional role.

Our approach to teaching and learning At the core of the University of Portsmouth’s distance learning delivery model is a blended learning approach which incorporates written learning materials, visual and aural learning resources, web-based communication and peer learning. We utilise our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment to facilitate e-learning between tutors and amongst students.

Each pathway also includes the following to maximise learner progression: • I nstant access to an ever-growing library of e-books and e-journals in the criminology/ community justice field. Currently, there are 500,000 relevant e-books and 24,000 relevant e-journals available to all ICJS students.

• P rovision of online interactive reading lists which leads to fast delivery of reading material on the learner’s own computer.

• Provision of a named unit coordinator and personal academic tutor to access support and guidance regarding the unit curriculum and assignments.

• Free dispatch of books and offprints of journal articles to all e-distance learning students when these are not available online.

• Provision of bespoke written materials to guide and support learning.

• In the Level 6 PQIP we offer face-to-face masterclasses on core issues in behavioural change, risk assessment and public protection.

The two modules to prepare you for study at higher education are: • The Reflective Professional – a unit to inform and test study skills and reflective practice.

• Community Justice Practice module - an e-portfolio to recognise learner’s previous professional experience in community justice and allied sectors.
