Today Pass it on: Great things are happening at UNT. Learn about them here and share our successes with your family and friends. • Designing for families. This spring, College of Visual Arts and Design students created handmade products from recycled old garments and materials to sell in the Friends of the Family Thrift Store to benefit the Denton County Friends of the Family Upcycle Project. Proceeds from the project, which occurs every semester, are used to assist families affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. • Hall of Fame knock out. It took a few jabs in the ring, but Richard “Dickie” Cole earned a boxing scholarship to attend UNT in the 1950s. In April, the boxing legend became the first inductee into the newly formed Texas Boxing Hall of Fame. Cole was honored for devoting 66 years of his life to the sport as a fighter, referee and judge at the amateur and professional levels, including some world title fights. From 1993 to 2014, he was head of Combative Sports for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. • Live on The Ticket. The Musers of Sports Radio 1310 The Ticket closed out a weeklong college tour in April with a live broadcast from UNT’s Pohl Recreation Center, where President Neal Smatresk announced that alumnus and radio personality George Dunham (’88) would receive the Presidential Medal of Honor at May’s commencement. Not to leave anyone out, the president also inducted alumnus and talk show host Craig Miller (’88) into the “Intramural Hall of Fame,” and talk show sidekick Gordon Keith was presented with an “Honorary Doctorate of Gentle Musings.”

As a staunch supporter of higher education, he served on the UNT System Board of Regents from 2007 to 2013 and helped lead the system during record growth. In 1999, Buchholz received UNT’s Outstanding Alumni

Service Award. He and his wife, Ruth, provided a gift to establish UNT’s Bill J. Priest Center for Community College Education, a research center studying critical community college issues. They also have supported UNT through scholarships and gifts. Goldwater honors
Vishnu Dantu, second-year Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student, was one of 10 students from Texas
to receive a prestigious 2015 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for innovative research. Dantu created an application for people with diabetes in which a smartphone camera analyzes light wavelengths transmitted through a person’s fingertip to measure glucose levels. TAMS students Anushree Agrawal, Michael Hashe and Tiffany Jiang earned Goldwater Honorable Mentions. In all, UNT has had 55 Goldwater scholars.
