THE IMPACT OF GIVING LARGE OR SMALL, YOUR GIFTS CHANGE EVERYTHING

OUR COMMUNITY OF VOLUNTEERS Every year over 1,000 of our alumni give their time and expertise to our global community. You can help in several ways – from supporting student career development through our online network to taking an active role in coordinating alumni social activities. By lending your individual skills, you can make a difference – just as the volunteers highlighted here have.

A message from the Director

Gillian Rowland-Kain (MSc 2012) gives her time in New York by promoting her Glasgow experience to prospective students. “I returned to NYC straight from Glasgow,” she says, “and missed everything about it! I wanted to make sure anyone who was questioning if they should attend from the USA took the leap. Speaking to prospective students is great as you get to share your fond memories with the next generation.” Steve Urquhart (MA 1996) is a freelance radio producer and an active member of our online careers platform for alumni and students, recently running a careers

workshop for students. “I was delighted to be invited to run a workshop about getting into radio production,” he says. “Student radio was a big part of my life and it really kick-started my own career, so it was good to be able to give something back and to pass something on to students.” Evelyn Dobson (née Delvin, MA 1967) is Club Secretary for the Glasgow University Club of Aberdeen. “I’ve been involved with the club for over 20 years,” she says, “and in addition to building the Glasgow network in Aberdeen, we are involved with raising funds. I’m very proud that as a group we contribute every year to University projects. It’s great to feel so connected, and that time and physical distance is not a barrier to feeling part of the current Glasgow community.” •• For more information, please see glasgow.ac.uk/alumni/getinvolved •• Join us in celebrating our community of alumni volunteers on social media from 1 to 7 June as part of UofG Alumni Volunteer Week. #UofGAlumniVols

As you will read in the current edition of Avenue, the University campus development plans continue to move forward, with planning permission recently approved and the new Learning & Teaching Hub reaching an exciting stage in its development. Indeed, many alumni are choosing to support us even at this early stage – glasgow.ac.uk/supportus. Some of the stories in this edition of Giving to Glasgow outline the impact that you have had on past campus development projects which have helped the University to build a strong foundation for future generations on a world-changing campus. With your continued support we are able to provide opportunities for students for career development through volunteering and entrepreneurships, as well as research opportunities. We are not only able to provide students with the chance to do amazing things and undertake life-changing experiences, but also help to inspire them to change the world. Every donation makes a difference, so thank you to everyone that has donated to the University.

Supporting our student entrepreneurs A local businessman has established an award to help enterprising Glasgow students overcome the financial challenges of launching new business ventures. Supporting enterprise and start-ups encourages students while benefiting local and global economies, but the challenges of launching a new venture can be substantial. Having started a wide variety of businesses, entrepreneur Jay Smith of Enterprise Screen Productions understands these difficulties more than most. He has chosen to establish the Jay Smith Innovation Award through personal and corporate donations to assist with costs – such as legal fees and patent applications – which can be an obstacle to new start-ups. “Entrepreneurial skills have always been important for Scotland and we’ve often led the way in creative and innovative discoveries for our changing world.” says Jay. “The University has contributed hugely to the development of talents which have

made the world a better place. It has given much to my family, and my four children have all had wonderful experiences here. It’s great to be able to give something back to help inspire, encourage and support. “My hope is that the students who access this support will amaze us with their ideas, creativity and innovation.” The selected students will also be supported through the University’s Careers Service, which provides access to business mentoring, “hatchery” space and workshops to help students bring their businesses to life. •• For further information about supporting students, please contact Kate Richardson, email: kate.richardson@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 1867.

THE UNIVERSITY REMEMBERED THROUGH LEGACIES What does Glasgow mean to you? We hope that you remember your time here fondly and recognise the impact Glasgow has had on your life. Many of our Glasgow family choose to support future generations by remembering the University in their will – and every gift makes a difference. In this issue, we look at the stories of two legacies.

Giving something back Dr Rosemary Macdonald (née Paterson, MBChB 1967) always wanted to be a doctor and became an undergraduate medical student aged just 17 years. “I almost didn’t attend the University of Glasgow but, on being told I was too young for Edinburgh, I applied to Glasgow and following an interview was offered a place,” says Dr Macdonald. “My subsequent career has revealed to me that the science-based clinical education we received was excellent, even if we may not have appreciated it at the time! “Because of that I feel I should like to support the University. I make an annual donation to support special projects but my will states that my legacy should be used as the University sees fit. “The acquisition of the Western Infirmary site is such a wonderful opportunity. It is fitting for us all to support this and to give ‘something’ back to the University and its present students. “One of my donations was named after my parents, who never had the opportunity to attend university. They would be delighted to have been remembered in this way.” By remembering the University in your will, your gift, no matter what size, can help make a lasting and meaningful contribution. After you have looked after those closest to you, even small gifts can have great impact, perhaps alleviating financial difficulties or funding a place at a conference to change the direction of a student’s life. All gifts can be named and live on in perpetuity. •• If you are considering leaving a gift to the University in your will, please contact our Development Officer for Legacies, Mrs Barrie Bryson, email: barrie.bryson@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 6886.

Legacy supports animal welfare Over the years, our School of Veterinary Medicine has been the fortunate and appreciative beneficiary of bequests from our clients, friends and supporters. Anthony Browning recently left a proportion of his estate to support the school’s contribution to pioneering future standards in animal treatment and welfare. Mr Browning’s late wife was a Glasgow graduate and Mr Browning was a lover of animals. Thanks to his generosity the school has created the Anthony Browning Animal Welfare Fund and is currently supporting a postgraduate research project into the welfare of sea lions in captivity. Many captive marine mammals are used in displays or for education programmes. These activities often happen during the summer at parks, which corresponds with the mating and moulting seasons. This study, made possible by Anthony Browning, will allow us to determine if there are welfare concerns for animals undertaking activities at certain times of the year. •• For further information about supporting the School of Veterinary Medicine, please contact Sarah Hunter, email: sarah.hunter@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7145.

Eye-opening gift for students Our alumni regularly choose to commemorate the lifelong connections they made in Glasgow by making a donation to the University. This year, members of the 1956 Zeta Club have kindly chosen to support the Medical Education Fund through the purchase of an ophthalmic model. This sophisticated eye examination simulator will be used for teaching and practising the use of an ophthalmoscope, examining the ocular fundus and identifying diseases and conditions within the eye. This equipment is especially valuable as it provides our medical students with the opportunity to develop and practise their clinical skills in a simulated clinical environment before meeting the challenge of real-life situations. We are extremely grateful to the 1956 Zeta Club for their support. •• For further information about supporting our medical students, please contact Josie Walbaum, email: josie.walbaum@glasgow.ac.uk, tel: +44 (0)141 330 7209.

BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS As we embark on a major campus development, we look back at the way your donations to our building projects in the last two decades have helped shape our physical environment. From Gilmorehill to Garscube to Loch Lomond – your support has had a transformative impact on our teaching and research. Here we highlight five buildings that your gifts helped bring to life.

SUPPORTING THE DOCTORS OF TOMORROW

A WORLD-CLASS HOSPITAL FOR PETS AND OWNERS

WOLFSON MEDICAL SCHOOL BUILDING LOCATION: GILMOREHILL CAMPUS COST: £14.5m, DONATIONS £8.6m YEAR OPENED: 2003

SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL LOCATION: GARSCUBE CAMPUS COST: £15m, DONATIONS £4.2m YEAR OPENED: 2009

The Wolfson Medical School Building was the first major addition to the Gilmorehill campus in over 15 years, winning a Royal Institute of British Architects’ Award in 2003. Around 1,300 donors supported our fundraising campaign and the building was named in recognition of a major gift from the Wolfson Foundation. The layout inside the contemporary glass and sandstone fronted building reflected a new approach to medical education at Glasgow, where students are introduced to clinical scenarios from the beginning of their education. Facilities include a fully equipped ward where our students train in a simulated clinical environment before meeting the challenge of real hospital situations. In our Vocational Studies Suite students can practise consulting in a realistic environment, interacting with actors in the roles of patients. Consulting rooms fitted with AV technology mean their classmates and tutors can observe their simulated consultations on a TV monitor. And in the Walton Library and Resource Centre our students can take advantage of an ergonomically designed library with books, journals and multimedia PCs, open 24 hours a day. 4

Our campaign to raise funds to help build a new small animal hospital at our Garscube Estate led many clients of the hospital to make a gift in recognition of the treatment their pets had received, in addition to the generous gifts we received from our graduates. The building has won many awards including the Civic Trust Award and the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. This is one of the most sophisticated hospitals in Europe, with the most advanced on-site diagnostic imaging facilities in Scotland, together with 13 consulting rooms and four theatres with climate control and natural daylight. Pets from across the UK benefit from the excellent care available from some of the best specialist vets in the world. The hospital is home to internationally recognised specialists supported by residents and interns and an expanding team of nurses, radiographers, physiotherapists and animal care assistants. The hospital also plays a vital role as a training hospital for students and nurses, allowing the vets of tomorrow to learn in state-of-the-art surroundings with access to some of the best vets in their field.

PICTURING THE SCENE SCOTTISH CENTRE FOR ECOLOGY & THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT (SCENE) LOCATION: ROWARDENNAN COST: £7m, DONATIONS £2m YEAR OPENED: 2007 (RESEARCH) 2014 (TEACHING) Surrounded by a rich variety of habitats, from freshwater lochs and rivers to woodlands, mountains and moorlands, SCENE is located in the spectacular landscape of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs, Scotland’s first National Park. Our field station has undergone a complete transformation, thanks to the generous support of over 500 donors. Our location and rich teaching facilities create a unique educational environment. The Harry Slack Teaching Building incorporates field teaching facilities, laboratory and residential accommodation, where visiting groups can learn about the natural environment in the best setting. The Maitland Building, our research wing, provides high-quality facilities, and has received a number of awards for its design, construction and sustainability factors. In this lochside location our scientists are working towards a better understanding of our environment, how it works, and how we can best protect it.

BEATING HEART DISEASE

TRANSFORMING CANCER TREATMENTS

BHF GLASGOW CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH CENTRE LOCATION: GILMOREHILL CAMPUS COST: £10.8m, DONATIONS £5.8m YEAR OPENED: 2006

WOLFSON WOHL CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE LOCATION: GARSCUBE CAMPUS COST: £19.2m, DONATIONS £10m, YEAR OPENED: 2014

Around 1,200 donors contributed to the fundraising campaign to build a centre dedicated to targeting and combating the many problems associated with heart disease. Linked by a glazed pedestrian bridge to the Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre Sir Graeme Davies Building and adjacent to the Wolfson Medical School Building, together these three innovative buildings form the biomedical “triangle of excellence” on the west of University Avenue. The building was named in recognition of the £5m contribution made by the British Heart Foundation.

The Beatson Pebble Appeal reached its £10m target in 2012 to build the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre, with more than 3,000 generous donors contributing towards the campaign. Named in recognition of donations from the Wolfson Foundation and the Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation, the new centre is located at our Garscube Estate. With outstanding facilities now in place, Glasgow has the potential to have a transformative impact on the future of cancer research. Home to scientists working on groundbreaking research projects that will transform the way patients with cancer are treated, the centre is a catalyst for accelerating the process of understanding cancer, improving existing therapies and identifying new ones and bringing them to patients. Glasgow is leading the way in developing new precision medicine techniques which aim to treat patients earlier and more effectively.

The BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre brought together researchers of international standing who were previously working in separate units across the city. The centre, which is part of the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences, is home to some 150 research and technical staff with access to outstanding clinical research facilities and physiology, electrophysiology and molecular laboratories. 5

Direct Debit If you would like to join the growing number of people who have chosen to support the University, please complete the direct debit form overleaf. Bequests Bequests are favoured by many alumni and friends who want to make a difference after their death. A gift of this kind also helps to reduce your inheritance tax liability. Stocks and shares Since 6 April 2000, individuals have been eligible for tax relief on gifts of certain shares, securities and other investments.
