The Fred Maytag Family Foundation Makes $1 Million Gift to Ensure Future of Critical Care Unit Social Worker Program Des Moines, Iowa – The Fred Maytag Family Foundation made a $1 million gift to establish an endowment in support of the Critical Care Unit (CCU) Social Worker Program at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. This amazing gift will be matched by an additional $1 million from the UnityPoint – Des Moines Foundation (UPH-DM Foundation) and serves as inspiration for others to support the Critical Care Unit Program. The Maytag family has been a longtime supporter of the Iowa Methodist Medical Center CCU. The CCU Social Worker program was established by Ellen Maytag Madsen in 1985, and they have continued to support this important program and the CCU for more than 35 years. “Our mother knew from her own experience the significance of having a state-of-the-art CCU in central Iowa,” says the trustees, Fritz and Ken Maytag. “She knew you had to have more than just the life-saving care provided by physicians, nurses, and staff. A big part of the healing journey is having the additional support services to help patients and families navigate the complexities of their illness.” Endowments are a critical component of our philanthropy initiatives, and they establish ongoing, future support for key programs. With their $1 million commitment and the UPH-DM Foundation’s additional $1 million, The Fred Maytag Family Foundation will ensure ongoing support for important programs and services in the CCU that insurance will not cover, including the Social Worker Program. Social workers assist patients and families by connecting them to resources and addressing their unique needs. “Each year, more than 3,800 patients are cared for in our Critical Care Units. The Fred Maytag Family Endowment will continue Ellen and the Maytag family’s legacy of helping the patients and families in Iowa for generations to come,” says UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Foundation President, Denny Linderbaum. Thanks to Ellen’s visionary leadership and generous support during her lifetime, the CCU Social Worker Program was established and has made a significant impact. In recognition and gratitude for this incredible gift, the endowment will be named The Fred Maytag Family Endowment.
