HAT POLICY

Unity College is a SunSmart School and as such, hats are a compulsory part of the school uniform.

+ Junior School (R-5): Students are required to wear the navy College bucket hat during recess, lunch, excursions and other outdoor activities all year round (T1 - T4). Beanies may be worn at recess and lunch in place of a hat during T2 only.

+ Middle/Senior School (6-12): All students must wear the navy College bucket hat at recess, lunch, excursions and other outdoor activities in T1, T3 and T4. Hot are strongly encouraged in T2 but not compulsory. However students are still requested to have their hat at school in T2 as there may be occasions when they are required.

Wearing Hats Inside (R-12): Students are to remove hats once in class and the Steeple for devotion and assemblies. The College believes that the act of removing your hat in class and in worship is a traditional sign of respect, and appropriate in our school environment.

SUNGLASSES

Students may choose to wear sunglasses during recess, lunch or when outdoors for lessons. However students are required to:

+ Wear sunglasses that are close-fitting or wraparound style (to reduce the amount of UV reaching the eyes around the edges).

+ Choose frames in black or dark blue colour (in preference to hi-vis style colours).

+ Not wear sunglasses inside.

+ Remove sunglasses and store safely while not in use (as opposed to storing them on top of head).

HAIR POLICY

+ Hair touching the collar is to be tied back at all times (R-12 male and female students).

+ Hair should be neatly styled, kept clean and of reasonable length.

+ No artificial hair colour should be evident.

+ No shaven heads.

+ Hair styles that are extreme or naturally attract attention by their nature are not acceptable.

+ Students are to be clean shaven. Side burns are to be of reasonable length (to the bottom of the earlobe).

+ Hair accessories (including ribbons, bows, headbands, clips and scrunchies) are to be maroon, navy, white or in applicable school uniform fabric only.

JEWELLERY

+ A plain watch of reasonable size and appearance.

+ A plain fine chain with a small cross around the neck.

+ A single plain gold or silver stud (max 6mm in diameter) in the lower part of the ear lobe(s).

+ A single plain gold or silver sleeper (max 12mm in diameter) in the lower part of the ear lobe(s).

+ A single clear diamante (max 6mm in diameter) in the lower part of the ear lobe(s).

+ A single white pearl (max 6mm in diameter) in the lower part of the ear lobe(s).

+ Facial piercings ARE NOT permitted at school. Only a clear insert may be worn if required.

+ No other accessories are permitted.

MAKE-UP

+ Junior School (R-5): No make-up or nail polish is to be worn.

+ Middle/Senior School (6-12): Students are not permitted to wear make-up or nail polish which is obvious or excessive.

TATTOOS

+ Visible tattoos are not acceptable.

SCARVES AND GLOVES

Navy full-fingered gloves and navy scarves are supplied by the Uniform Shop and are permitted to be worn:

+ Junior School (R-5): To and from school only during cold weather.

+ Middle/Senior School (6-12): At school during cold weather but not during activities where they could pose a OHS&W hazard (eg. PE, Tech Studies, Science/Ag Practicals etc.)

BEANIES

+ Junior School (R-5): Students may wear beanies to and from school all year round and at recess and lunch during T2 only.

+ Middle/Senior School (6-12): Students may wear beanies to and from school all year round and they may be worn at recess and lunch during T2 and T3.

CULTURAL INCLUSIVITY

Families with students needing to wear a hijab, turban or similar head covering and/or have the majrity of skin covered for religious/cultural reasons are to make a written request addressed to the Principal and note the following:

+ Head coverings are to be navy blue

+ Navy tights may be worn with the Winter Dress and maroon leggings with the Summer Dress

+ Pants are also an option.

EXCURSIONS AND FORMAL OCCASIONS

Formal uniform is to be worn for all formal College occasions and excursions, including the College Blazer for Senior School students (Year 10-12), unless otherwise specified by staff.

BLAZERS - SENIOR SCHOOL (YEAR 10-12)

Blazers are to be worn for formal occasions (eg. excursions, school photos, end of year service). It is to take priority over the jumper.

Blazers should be worn in T2 and T3 as the first preferred item. For comfort during class time, students may wear their blazer, jumper, or both garments.

During T1 and T4, blazers are optional for everyday use. Formal requirements still apply, however, commonsense rules apply for extremes of weather with regard to excursions for all terms. Blazers are not to be worn with shorts.

KNOCKOUT SPORT

Students participating in Knockout Sport must wear full Unity College Sports Uniform (including the college bucket hat where applicable) without additions. Team uniforms (eg. netball, football) will be provided by the College as required.

OPTIONAL COMMEMORATIVE APPAREL

+ Year 12 Jacket/Jumper is an optional item which can be worn with the Unity College Formal and Sports Uniform on regular school days during Year 12. The College blazer remains the appropriate item for all formal events and excursions.

+ Year 5 Camp Jumper is an optional item which can be worn with the College Sports Uniform on PE days in Year 5 ONLY.

+ Extra/Co-Curricular Apparel (including Service Trip Polo Shirts, Outdoor Education Polo Shirt, Musical T-Shirt, Japan Trip Jacket and Ski Trip Jumper): These items are optional additional purchases for students involved in the variety of extra and co-curricular trips/ activities offered by the College. These items ARE NOT to be worn as part of the Unity College Formal or Sports Uniform unless directed by staff.

FLEXIBLE SUMMER/ WINTER UNIFORM CHANGE OVER PERIODS

Formal Summer Uniform may be worn during the first two weeks of T2 and the last two weeks of T3 in place of the Winter Uniform.

Please note: Summer Uniform items are not to be worn with Winter Uniform and vice versa.

NON-UNIFORM DAYS

On specified Non-Uniform Days, students may wear casual clothes. On these days, students are required to dress appropriately - respecting the following guidelines:

+ Wear smart, casual clothes suitable for attending school.

+ Shoes must be fully enclosed and meet OHS&W requirements for workshops, laboratories and kitchens.

+ No open shoes, ugg boots, thongs or slides.

+ Shoulders are to be fully covered.

+ No bare mid-riffs or revealing necklines.

+ Slogans or writing on clothing should not contradict the Christian ethos of the College.

+ College expectations regarding hair, jewellery and make-up must still be adhered to.

Those who choose not to comply will be asked to change and/or they will be unable to be involved in a class..
