Philanthropy: Goodwill to fellow members of the human race; especially active effort to promote human welfare. That’s it. That’s United Way of Cass-Clay. If you have taken the time to thumb through this year’s Annual Report, you probably have some pretty clear ideas about the organization – what it wants to do, who is involved, what groups and people benefit from its programs.

You may study the numbers to see how many partner agencies and programs are helping many people through United Way. You may be impressed by the fact that this past year’s campaign exceeded its $5.1 million goal. In spite of the fact that there are a lot of impressive numbers in this report, it’s not about numbers. It’s about philanthropy. It’s about goodwill to fellow members of the human race. Especially in the case of United Way, it’s about active effort to promote human welfare.

Our theme for this year’s campaign was Create Everyday Miracles with United Way. This was such a great theme because it’s true! With the help of donors and volunteers, United Way is able to help create miracles for the men, women, and children in our community each and every day. We reached a milestone achievement in 2012 by surpassing our goal of $5.1 million. This is a record breaking amount raised for United Way of Cass-Clay and represents one community coming together to achieve one goal of helping out those that need a hand up. Your investment to United Way, both in dollars and in time, is leveraged greatly by the United Way staff and volunteers to ensure that it is used in the most efficient manner. A huge thank you to each and every one of you that made reaching our campaign goal a reality this year. We couldn’t accomplish this goal without our wonderful donors and volunteers!

2012 CAMPAIGN AWARDS 2012 DONATH AWARD OF EXCELLENCE: JOHN DEERE ELECTRONIC SOLUTIONS John Deere Electronic Solutions (JDES) achieved new heights with United Way in 2012. Employee giving has doubled in the past five years, making the 2012 campaign the largest in JDES history. Their overall United Way contribution increased by more than $28,000. In addition, JDES was the premier sponsor of the Great Plains Food Bank Summer BackPack Program in the Fargo community. Through a coordinated effort with United Way, JDES leadership provided support not only financially, but also with sponsorship of materials and volunteers needed for the summer-long program. JDES is also proud to have many other employees who volunteer throughout the year in support of Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity and other United Way partner agencies.

A PARTNERSHIP WITH JOHN DEERE ELECTRONIC SOLUTIONS This year, John Deere Electronic Solutions celebrated the 175th anniversary of John Deere. As a tangible way to LIVE UNITED and “celebrate through citizenship”, they focused on expanding the BackPack Program of the Great Plains Food Bank throughout the summer. In the metro area alone, 33% of students qualify to receive free/reduced lunch. Together with five non-profits and six specifically chosen elementary schools, they pledged to cover not only the cost of up to 500 backpacks a week for children, but also the volunteer power needed to pack backpacks full of kid friendly food each week. Because of their support and desire to LIVE UNITED, 3,145 backpacks were provided and 420 children received meals throughout the summer.

2012 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT I love being a Loaned Executive; I have met so many wonderful people in our community. I truly believe in United Way and the work it does. I feel blessed to be raising my three young children in a community that has such a wonderful organization that touches so many lives. Nearly everyone will be impacted by United Way at some time; from grief counseling, Imagination Library to the Back Pack program which feeds school age children over the weekends who normally wouldn’t eat. The impact United Way of Cass-Clay makes varies on how you are involved - those that volunteer, receive assistance from or make donations to - but overall, everyone benefits from making this a better community to live, work and raise a family. Angie Scoville, Western State Bank 2012 Loaned Executive

I cannot speak highly enough about the United Way 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program. It greatly aided my personal growth, helping me to learn about myself, my goals and my potential. Plus, it gave me the tools I needed to gain professional confidence and further my career path and focus. I can honestly say I would not have progressed as far as I have in my career, nor would I have such an exciting and wonderful network of fellow women leaders in the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community. The 35 Under 35 Program works to create a vast network of effective, engaged women leaders who are set on influencing our community and making it a better place to live and work. I am proud to be part of it. Katie Hutton, The Chamber 2012 United Way 35 Under 35 Women’s Leadership Program Graduate 2012 Community Investment Review Panel Volunteer

I’ve always been an advocate for United Way of Cass-Clay, but it wasn’t until volunteering with United Way that I learned not only how immense of an impact the organization has on the community, but also how great the need is within our community. This impact is realized through its partner agencies and programs, but the amount of lives United Way touches is immeasurable. Kyle Haugland, Bell State Bank & Trust 2012 Loaned Executive

2012 GRADUATES

in 2012, the 4th annual class of young women graduated from the United way 35 Under 35 women’s leadership program designed to: • Mobilize the caring power of women • Energize & inspire women to make a difference • Deepen leadership opportunities in the cass-clay community for young women

I have been involved in more community events in the last 12 months, than I was in the previous 12 years combined. This experience has shown me the needs in the community, as well as the power that passionate women can have. We have become involved in so many activities, creating positive change for so many people in the FM area through fundraising, volunteering, and being an advocate for different causes – as well as planning to create some charity opportunities of our own. This program has been life-changing – from increasing my visibility within my organization as a leader of the future, to expanding my view of community in the FM area, to creating life-long bonds with some of the most inspiring women I have ever met. Thank you for the opportunity, all our lives are greater because of this program. Kristin roers, rn, sanford Health 2012 United way 35 Under 35 women’s leadership program Graduate
