ANNUAL REPORT 2009-2010

CONTENTS

Letter from the Board Chair I’d like to express what a great honor it has been to serve as Board Chair for United Way of Denton County. Over the past year, many of us have experienced our share of economic uncertainty. But it was the most vulnerable among us – homeless families, teens without opportunities, and young children that are given up on before they were ever given a chance – who needed the support of this community more than ever before. United Way of Denton County’s partner agencies were able to provide the critical, direct assistance to those who needed it most because of your generosity. We all know colleagues, family members and friends who were impacted by the economic downturn; which is why I am so proud of the support shown to United Way during the 2009 Campaign. You made a choice to LIVE UNITED, to give of yourself and give to your community. When you give to United Way of Denton County, you are investing in the health and wellbeing of the community. You are funding the building blocks to a better life: programs and services in Education, Income and Health. I thank you for inspiring hope and creating opportunities for a better tomorrow. I encourage you to continue to Give, to Advocate, and to Volunteer. And finally, a special thank you to the employees who designated to United Way of Denton County, particularly my Texas Woman’s University family.

Most Sincerely, Mary Ann McDuff, Chair, Board of Directors 2009-2010 Director, Academic Financial Services, Texas Woman’s University

When we as individuals think outside ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change. When we think of others lives as linked to our own, our compassion grows. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We build the strength of our neighborhoods. We bolster the health of our communities. And we change the lives of those who walk by us every day. To LIVE UNITED is to GIVE, to ADVOCATE, to VOLUNTEER. Because united, we stand. United, we elevate. United, we persevere. United, we move through... above and beyond. United, we can change what we see in our world.

Community Services The following services are provided by United Way staff and office volunteers. Information and Referral Helpline United Way of Denton County operates a local helpline to provide Denton County residents with a place to turn for help with health and human service needs. Callers reach a trained information specialist who can assess each caller’s needs and refer them to the appropriate services. The line is answered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10am to 3pm. 2-1-1 For use after office hours. United Way of Denton County is a leading partner with the nation-wide 2-1-1 hotline. 2-1-1 is a toll-free number that connects people to health and human service providers they need in North Central Texas. 2-1-1 specialists are knowledgeable about the support options offered by agencies in the 8-county region and statewide. 2-11 does not replace 9-1-1 for emergencies. Having an easy-to-remember universal number for non-emergency help is an important component of the health and human services system. This service is available 24/7. Community Services Directory The Community Services Directory is an integral component of the Information and Referral program. The directory provides a comprehensive list of all available health and human service agencies in Denton County, including contact information, hours of operation, service area, and list of services provided by each agency. All agency information is updated every two years to provide the most up-to-date information possible. Sponsors for the 2008 edition were Denton County MHMR, Pinnacle Home Health, and Alphagraphics. Directories are available for free download on the UWDC website at www.unitedwaydenton.org.

North Central Texas Aging and Disability Resource Center (NCT-ADRC)

The ADRC is a source of information about long-term services and support for people of all ages who have disabilities, care for people who have disabilities, serve people who have disabilities, or want to plan for longterm services and supports in advance of need. UWDC recently partnered with the NCT-ADRC to serve as a local coordinator of this inter-agency initiative. The goal of this virtual collaborative effort is to better integrate long-term services and supports by increasing users’ access to resource information, improving inter-agency communication, and streamline the referral processing, making sure to have a ‘no wrong door’ approach. The NCT-ADRC in collaboration with the Area Agency on Aging, Resource Center on Independent Living, Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, and Denton County Mental Health and Retardation Center continually provides educational opportunities to professionals and the community as a whole through free workshops and information sessions.

Financial Stability Initiative VITA The Financial Stability Initiative’s vision is to promote financial stability among low-tomoderate income families and individuals in Denton County. United Way of Denton County works in collaboration with the Internal Revenue Service, Denton North Branch Library, UNT Money Management Center, Wells Fargo, and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to offer free tax-preparation sites and financial counseling for low-to-moderate income workers, educating and assisting individuals applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, and offering choices on how to invest their refunds to benefit the financial health of their families. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites are staffed by IRS certified volunteers who are trained specifically to offer tax preparation and financial counseling in a variety of areas.

In 2007, over $16 million in tax credits went unclaimed by Denton County residents who qualified for them

In 2007, the IRS estimated that over $16 million in tax credits went unclaimed by Denton County residents who qualified for them. To combat this, and get money back into resident’s wallets, UWDC offered 20 free tax preparation sessions in 2009. During this time volunteers prepared and submitted 230 tax forms. The IRS estimates that the average out-of-pocket cost incurred by taxpayers to prepare and submit their returns is $209 per return. Based on this calculation, the United Way of Denton County VITA program saved residents roughly $47,861 in tax preparation alone. In addition, volunteer tax preparers found over $55,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits for participants and had over $216,000 in Federal refunds issued. The VITA program saved money for Denton residents as well as increased their income. UWDC is helping families access the money that is available to them and choose how best to provide for their families. Through this initiative, working individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes will be more knowledgeable about their financial options and gain an understanding of how to become more financially stable.
