Dear Friends, It has been a pleasure for our family to serve Abilene and the Big Country together with you in 2014. It was most exciting to allocate to our nonprofit partners a thirty percent increase over the amounts distributed in 2013. On April 28, 2014, the United Way made organizational history by chartering the United Way of Foundation of Abilene. The goal of the Foundation is to raise an endowment that will someday pay all of the operational expenses for the United Way thus freeing up 100% of campaign donations to return to our partner agencies. In June, our community suffered through a terrible hail storm. United Way was able to assist our local partner agencies in getting back on their feet by paying deductibles on vans that transport children and roofs that house families in transition. In addition, several local roofing companies led by Barr Roofing came together in a “Roofers Giving Back” drive and raised an additional $16,000 for our annual campaign. In January 2015, we partnered with the Community Foundation to honor the Abilene Police Department and Taylor County Sherriff officers on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Today, we pause to honor again leaders and legends of our community: our members of law enforcement, our fire department, the men and women who serve at Dyess Air Force Base, and our veterans. We have been blessed in West Texas with leaders and legends since our earliest days. Jack Rentz has worked tirelessly as a champion for Abilene in his role as Campaign Chair. His hard work resulted in another increase in funds to our partner agencies. Citizens from all over responded to Happy State Bank’s challenge on Giving Tuesday and $18,000 was raised. Over and over volunteers and donors in the Big Country responded to the needs of our community with United Way serving as a conduit. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Abilene and the change in our community that allows us to continue with our mission of Love-Live-Give. Thank you for your continued and generous support,

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT Annual Campaign

The work of United Way of Abilene could not be accomplished without campaign volunteers. Volunteers include the Board of Directors, Campaign Cabinet, Speakers’ Bureau, Loaned Executives, as well as Employee Campaign Coordinators and Teams.

Loaned Executives

Loaned Executives are volunteers “loaned” from local companies that give United Way the essential man power to take our message to workplaces throughout the area. In 2014, 15 Loaned Executives conducted campaigns that raised more than $1,016,000.

Speakers’ Bureau

To educate the community about our work, we create a volunteer Speakers’ Bureau. In 2014, Speakers’ Bureau members spoke at 117 campaign meetings and agency fairs.

Young Leaders Society

A group of passionate individuals committed to our community came together to create the Young Leaders Society (YLS). YLS members are establishing ways to give their time and talents to United Way. Two inaugural events were hosted by the YLS - The White Party and a Day of Caring.

Alexis de Tocqueville Society

Alexis de Tocqueville Society members contributed a record $504,000 to United Way of Abilene in 2014. Society members provide the leadership and generosity that transform our community. UNITED WAY FOUNDATION

In April 2014, United Way of Abilene accomplished a long-time goal - the formation of the United Way Foundation of Abilene. The goal of the Foundation is to provide the flexibility and future capacity required to allow United Way of Abilene to continue addressing the changing needs of West Central Texas. The Foundation board, led by Chairman Scott Dueser, is committed to building an endowment that will fund operational expenses so every campaign dollar raised goes directly to partner agencies. Long-term in scope, the Foundation affords donors the opportunity to leave a legacy and shape the future of West Central Texas.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD

In 1989, the United Way of Abilene Board of Directors approved the establishment of a Volunteer Service Award. The purpose of the award is to honor one outstanding volunteer for “a lifetime of community service.” Criteria for the award are a commitment to service to others, determination and persistence in fulfilling volunteer obligations, loyalty and integrity, active involvement in community activities in addition to United Way, and dedication to helping people in Abilene.
