The Bachelor of Social Work is an entry level, professionally accredited qualification to practise as a social worker. Particular emphasis is placed on social justice and human rights as the basis for social work practice. Core units focus on counselling, case management, mental health, human services, research, child protection, disability and community development. An elective stream provides the opportunity to explore different disciplines while an embedded Honours program enables those interested in research to pursue postgraduate studies.

This course prepares graduates for employment as a social worker in a range of health and community services settings with the ability to work with people of all backgrounds and needs.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this course will be prepared to practise as social workers in government and nongovernment positions in fields such as health, child protection, disability services, housing services, youth work, aged care, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, community development, mental health services, and domestic violence services.

Danyel Herbert Bachelor of Social Work student

“I did my first placement in St George, Queensland. I chose the rural placement option as I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone and the learning experiences would be more diverse. I’ve met so many different and interesting people from all walks of life and I get to see and learn first-hand the barriers that the vulnerable people in this community face in accessing human service providers. I’ve been given the opportunity for a hands-on learning experience where I can apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained over the past two years in a practical setting to understand how it all connects.

I was offered support by the Health Placement Team from the very beginning of the planning process which made everything so much easier, especially when you’re so far from home.”
