he entryway is your first impression … for an estate, it provides an idea of what’s to come.” These words came from Landry Design Group partner William Mungall in the feature story, “Grand Entrances,” but they might as well refer to every property highlighted in this issue — our first of 2023. What’s to come this year is a resetting — of market expectations, lifestyle priorities, opportunities and visions for the future.

I consider this issue an ode to the thrill and joy of discovery. Homes are still central to our lives, but travel and daily activity has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Exploring new places has always been a favorite pastime, and more so than ever now that borders have opened up. With that, we take you to the streets of Paris — a city that never loses its luster, the renewed romance of rail travel via the restored Nostalgie-Istanbul-Orient-Express, and all the creative ways you can see nature’s finest spectacle, the Northern Lights. A Timeless Classic

rom the first glimpse, the property featured on our cover promises something out of the ordinary, even among ultraluxury estates. A private preserve in every sense, it appears as a European country manor sheltered by stately oaks, gardens and lush landscaping on 12-plus acres that create an oasis of green. It feels like a private park, yet the Barrington location implies a convenient commute to Chicago.

A circular garden in the middle of the drive showcases a gracious entry. Double mahogany doors open to reveal a stunning, two-story rotunda that echoes the shape of the garden. Columns, a dazzling chandelier and handwrought iron balustrades framed with mahogany introduce the home. The interior, with almost 15,000 square feet of living space and seven fireplaces, might be the epitome of grandeur, but it also exudes charm and warmth. The net effect can only be described as enchanting.

“Timeless elegance” is the apt characterization of Dean Tubekis, with Coldwell Banker Realty in Barrington, Illinois.

“Traditional warmth is another good adjective,” he says. “Even though it’s a large house, you go into many of the rooms, and you feel cozy. You feel comfortable with all the space around you.”

Comfort here is the result of superb design. Everything is orchestrated so expertly that rooms, finishes, fabrics and appointments work together effortlessly.

Distinctive flooring, such as the bricks in the main-level laundry room or the intricate patterns created by different wood species in the family room, make every room unique. An inlaid border highlights the area for the table in the dining room. Here, a soft linear patterned wall covering lays to rest any sense of pretension.

“The ceilings are really special in this house,” shares Tubekis.

Every room has a special treatment, from coffers and trays to beams. “The beams in some rooms mirror the distinctive treatment of the glass in the windows and French doors. For example, clerestory windows above the French doors in the bottom level mirror the unique shape and positioning of the beams, and this pattern is repeated in the family room on the floor above.

The primary suite is located on the first floor. Features include an office, five additional bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, and three laundry rooms. Every floor incorporates places to gather, lounge, and relax.

Devoted to entertaining, the lower level includes a second kitchen positioned for easy access to an outdoor kitchen. This level also contains a home theater, family room, extensive wine cellar and tasting space, along with an additional laundry and changing area adjacent to the pool entry. Particularly striking is the billiards room with a massive fireplace and an inlaid floor that mimics leather. A curving bank of oversized windows repeats a pattern similar to that in the great room.

Stone patios surround an artful pool and spa, which is complimented by rock formations surrounding additional plunge pools.

This slice of heaven is listed at $4.995 million.

n residential architecture , entryways are not designed with utility in mind, unlike kitchens or dining rooms, whose purposes are strictly defined. These spaces have a role that transcends pure functionality, providing guests with their first impression of the home’s character. In addition to serving as a space to greet visitors, a magnificent foyer establishes the design qualities that permeate the residence.

Los Angeles’ Landry Design Group (LDG) is renowned for a global portfolio of luxury residences, and founder/president Richard Landry is fluent in both classical and modern languages of architecture. Articulating the importance of entrance design, LDG partner William Mungall reports, “The entryway is your first impression … for an estate it provides an idea of what’s to come.”

Mungall adds, “We spend a lot of time with clients discussing what’s important to them, how they live and how they want to feel when they arrive home,” noting that some clients appreciate the overall experience, while others are more conscious of details. “Having a hierarchy of elements and something unique to focus on creates drama,” explains the architect.

In the soaring entryway of a sleek, modern residence in L.A., contemporary elegance is conveyed through a sculptural staircase and stunning chandelier visible through a two-story glass wall. LDG associate Justin Kern reports, “The goal of this space was to blur the line between exterior and interior, achieved with a floor-toceiling glass curtain wall.” Noting that the exterior stone is carried into the foyer, Kern adds, “The curved form of the main stair plays against the pure geometry of the architecture.”

In Atherton, California, LDG authored an impressive French-themed residence with limestone cladding and zinc mansard roof. “The stone entry is stately but casual with simple square columns and a set-back pediment,” explains Mungall, who notes a transition to a more formal tone appears with high-gloss marble and limestone flooring on the porch that previews the interiors. “Elegantly detailed Art Deco-inspired doors provide a hint of something more glamorous inside,” he adds. Within the grand foyer, all eyes are drawn to a three-story chandelier wrapped by a gracefully curved staircase.

Chicago-headquartered Tom Stringer Design Partners boasts an eclectic portfolio, yet all the firm’s commissions reflect a genuine sense of place. Water

is one of founder/president Tom Stringer’s greatest inspirations, and he maximizes views of the Great Lakes or Pacific Coast while incorporating native materials. “The entry sequence is a defining moment to present your style and prepare visitors for what’s to come,” says Stringer, suggesting everything subsequently experienced should emanate from that initial introduction.

“The entry sequence is carefully choreographed and rehearsed with the homeowner as we’re finalizing the design,” explains Stringer, who sometimes views these spaces from the perspective of a restaurateur or hotelier. “As a guest, I want to be elegantly guided through the entry, and as a host, that’s what I’d want for my guests,” he says.

For the restoration of a George Maher-designed home outside Chicago, Stringer combined two spaces to create a large, multifaceted foyer ideal for entertaining — it accommodates seating, generous artwork and a grand piano — while revealing to visitors their first dramatic view of Lake Michigan. Stringer maintains the approach to entryway design should be consistently applied across architectural styles. “The visual language may be different, but you’re still trying to accommodate the same moment,” says the prominent designer.

Alabama-based Jeffrey Dungan Architects creates luxury vacation residences throughout the nation, reflecting a passion for rural sensibilities instilled in the founding principal while growing up on his family’s farm. As a result, Jeffrey Dungan’s entryways are less formal and more organic, well-suited to the rustically elegant country homes he designs.

“You begin a relationship with a house from the moment you see it from the street, and that ‘design dance’ starts with the driveway, where I begin to lay down a ‘trail of breadcrumbs,’” explains Dungan. He believes many designers are too conscious of making a big splash at the front entrance, primarily for the benefit of visitors, while people who reside there often enter through

unattractive mudrooms. “I’ve gone a long way to make that other entry just as thoughtful and inspiring,” explains the architect.

One strategy employed by Dungan, particularly for beach homes, is the zaguan, a Latin American concept that provides an incremental transition from the outdoors. “People enter through a portal, whether an arch or gate, into a private courtyard, often with a water element,” explains Dungan, who adds, “Because it’s shaded, this covered outdoor space creates its own microclimate.”

For traditional entries, Dungan creates interest in the approach leading to the front door through landscaping and hardscaping, occasionally offering a peek inside to heighten anticipation. He suggests, “The house is about to give you a little hug,” and adds, “Once inside, what you see invites you to come forward, a continuation of that trail of breadcrumbs.” By creating an axial view of the home, the architect reveals the character of the house within the first few steps.

Blue Heron is a homebuilder responsible for spectacular modern estates in Las Vegas, and founder/CEO Tyler Jones reports that his design team places a high priority on first impressions. “The entryway is an extremely important subject in the dialogue we have with every client,” says Jones. Noting that prices of his custom houses can approach $100 million, he explains, “These homes aren’t about meeting clients’ basic needs, but expressing their unique personalities.”

In a 15,000-square-foot hillside residence, the entry progression sequence begins at the curb and traverses extensive water features, a Blue Heron signature. “Water is a way to amplify other effects, and we also use it for biophilic design principles,” says Jones, who adds, “When you see and hear water, you feel comfortable and safe.” In this and other Blue Heron projects, the entry experience culminates with the presentation of a quintessential Las Vegas panorama. “We tease it out, creating tension before we reveal the dramatic city view that’s part of the experience,” explains Jones.

easoned travelers sometimes grumble that oncebeloved destinations have lost their charm, lamenting that progress has interrupted nostalgia. To some purists, Paris has been compromised by Starbucks competing with local cafés, minimalist architecture impeding views of Art Nouveau landmarks. But Paris, a modern and occasionally chaotic metropolis, has definitely not lost its ability to inspire and delight visitors.

Paris-based journalist Leah Walker, who has been featured in USA Today, France Today and Forbes Travel Guide, as well as on CNN, insists that although the city evolves, it has not lost its immutable charm. “Paris is a beautiful backdrop for both the mundane and extraordinary moments in life, whether you’re living here or visiting,” she comments. The native Texan reports that despite the usual frustrations of big city living, she constantly witnesses Paris’ enduring magic. “I live a block from the Eiffel Tower and my neighborhood is inundated with tourists from around the world,” reports Walker. “Every day I see the joy on people’s faces!”

Walker co-founded Garnier Creations, a firm that works with prestigious fashion designers, culinary celebrities and cultural institutions to create bespoke luxury experiences for travelers. Its “experiential retail confidant” services ensure VIP treatment at the city’s most fashionable boutiques, where rope lines established during the pandemic still remain. Garnier Creations offers luxury travelers an opportunity to bypass lines and receive personalized attention.

First-time visitors to Paris naturally gravitate to iconic

attractions, dutifully checking off their lists, but one’s sense of adventure should not be constrained by guidebooks. While the Louvre is the world’s most-visited museum, lovers of Impressionism may find greater fulfillment at Musée d’Orsay, which houses one of the finest collections of 19th century paintings and sculptures on the planet. A former train station, the Beaux-Arts structure with two giant clocks facing the Seine is itself a work of art.

The intimate Musée de l’Orangerie is famous for Monet’s panoramic Water Lilies wall murals, Musée Eugène Delacroix occupies the painter’s former apartment in the 6th arrondissement, and newer museums fuel an arts scene that is as vibrant as ever. The Pinault Collection, featuring the private contemporary art collection of billionaire François Pinault, opened in the landmark Bourse de Commerce.

Like the Louvre, where I.M. Pei’s iconic pyramid is as famous as the original edifice, the historic commodities exchange building housing the Pinault Collection benefits from the addition of modern aesthetics. There, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando created a bold concrete cylinder within the existing rotunda that, like Pei’s pyramid, seamlessly coexists with the original architecture.

Located in Bois de Boulogne, a sprawling park flanking the city’s west side, is the Louis Vuitton Foundation, ensconced in a stunning glass-sheathed structure by Frank Gehry. Spearheaded by Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, the Foundation showcases an expansive modern art collection, including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Takashi Murakami and Damien Hirst.

Connoisseurs intent on digging deeper into the rich Paris arts scene may consult The Seen-Paris, which offers custom-tailored access to private collections and artist studios, enhanced by expert guides, chauffeured transportation and Michelin-starred dining. Founder Alexandra Weinress explains, “Through private gallery visits and direct encounters with industry professionals, each bespoke experience is designed to reveal a vibrant and modern artistic capital whose glory days aren’t only behind it.”

Weinress notes, “The lofty presence of the city’s historical masterpieces and worldrenowned museums often overshadows the fact that Paris has a thriving contemporary art scene,” and adds, “Despite the art industry becoming increasingly international, Paris will never lose its position as a tastemaker and advocate of the avant-garde.”

Dining is a major part of any Parisian experience, and although classic French cooking is abundant, the city’s culinary scene has become diverse. Heavyweights such as Guy Savoy and Pierre Gagnaire delight privileged gastronomes, while Japanese-born Kei Kobayashi breaks boundaries at three-star Kei. A couple can easily spend 1,000 euros at one of the city’s revered temples of French cuisine, but the advent of more affordable “neo-bistros,” such as Michelin-starred Septime, democratizes gastronomy, shattering the myth that the only great food in Paris is haute cuisine.

Wendy Lyn, a Paris-based food writer who has been featured in The New York Times, Food & Wine and Condé Nast Traveler, reports that while some visitors still chase Michelin stars, Paris is evolving into a more egalitarian place to eat. “Fancy ‘starred’ dining has been replaced by shareable plates at small, walk-in-only wine bars and traveling chef pop-ups inclusive of cuisines other than French,” says Lyn, who cites Tontine Bistrot and Early June as illustrative of this trend. Romantics should take note that once-derided dinner cruises on the Seine have experienced a resurgence with the involvement of world-class chefs Alain Ducasse and Frédéric Anton.

Pastry chef Pierre Hermé showcases his audacious approach to the macaron, a classic French confection, with flavor combinations so trendsetting that seasonal releases of his new assortments are as anxiously awaited as Parisian fashion designers’ lines of haute couture. Maison Mulot offers extraordinary classic pastries, Japanese-inspired sweets are presented by Mori Yoshida, and chocolatier Jacques Genin dispenses jewel-like confections at his elegant boutiques.

The Ritz, Plaza Athénée and Hôtel de Crillon are among the city’s most renowned luxury hotels. Leah Marshall, general manager at Le Bristol, a perennially glamorous hotel on fashionable rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, insists that the Paris she welcomes the world to has fully rebounded from the pandemic. “The city of Paris has returned to her former glory, buzzing with visitors from all corners of the world eager to experience the magic of our charming cafés, world-class art and fine dining,” she says.

In artsy Montmartre, a neighborhood famous for its bohemian heritage, a splash of romantic elegance was recently introduced by Manolita Paris, an intimate 10-room hotel steps from the storied Moulin Rouge. A more prominent newcomer is Hôtel Madame Rêve, occupying the lovingly restored Louvre post office building and providing splendid views from its strategic Right Bank location.

“Hôtel Madame Rêve is a very personal project, a tale I imagined for myself and wrote for others,” says hotel founder and art director Laurent Taïeb, a native Tunisian who grew up near Paris’ celebrated Saint-Ouen flea market. Explaining his intent is for guests to experience the infusion of contemporary design into an iconic 1888 building, Taïeb states “These timely juxtapositions are what continue to make Paris so endearing.”

The city of Paris is not a theme park, but a global financial capital whose growth is not always perfectly choreographed. Nonetheless, its beauty and romance defy progress. It is always a good idea to rediscover Paris.

hether it’s waterfalls, sunrises, or the dancing Northern Lights across a dark starry sky, there is something exhilarating about chasing down stunning natural wonders. The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are a phenomenon that only occurs in some of the coldest, darkest parts of the world and they have been a longtime favorite challenge for tourists and travelers.

Todd Powell, co-founder of Vacations by Rail, describes the lights as “a living, breathing celestial event. The aurora’s movements are not just a dance, but the pulse of the night sky.” The wavering lights that appear and often change colors are likely to be the best light show you’ll ever see, and there are many creative ways to view them in style. Land, sea, and sky all provide a unique opportunity to gaze in wonder at the natural marvel.

Due to light pollution, approximately 9-percent of the skies over the United States are not dark enough to catch a glimpse of the lights, and about 80-percent of the rest of the world’s population can’t view them either, according to Powell, which means a glimpse of them may be a once in a lifetime.

Vacations by Rail offers more than one journey with the lights as a focal point. The Auror View at Bettles Lodge is a six-day journey that includes a two-night stay in Bettles, just past the Arctic Circle, where guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the lights. The Alaska Winterland and Northern Lights trip is a nine-day journey that makes a stop at the Chena Hot Springs Resort for guests to unwind and then venture out to explore the night skies. “There is something ethereal about seeing the Northern Lights. f each home has a story to tell, imagine what the designers of those homes could reveal. That’s the idea behind BOLD, the aptly titled first book from legendary interior designers Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of renowned firm Drake/Anderson.

The tome focuses on 11 Drake/Anderson projects, each comprising a chapter with intimate, behind-the-scenes information and multiple glossy images of the property. The never-before-seen Gotham Glamour project, a dazzling, full-floor pied-à-terre overlooking Manhattan’s Central Park, graces the cover – and invites us in with a 30-page spread of the stellar space. Homes & Estates recently spoke with Drake about the inspiration for the book, the firm’s unique design philosophy, and how a Drake/Anderson design can be polished or uninhibited, minimalist or maximalist, but always remains BOLD.

H&E: How did the idea for the book come about and how did it take shape along the way?

Drake: This book showcases our work after forming our partnership (in 2015) as a celebration of those past years. Having completed significant projects in this time, we started by assessing the projects we wanted to include and narrowed it down to the 11 in BOLD.

H&E: BOLD’s description defines your style as “opulent modernist design with interiors that are as unique and expressive as they are inviting and livable.” Is that an accurate representation? What does it

mean in terms of your design philosophy?

Drake: Those words do capture what our work embodies. What we create in our designs are spaces that are one-of-a-kind –truly bespoke for each client – that reflect their personalities and passions. We do love lush materials and unique pieces and select those carefully and thoughtfully to entice and beguile the senses and experience.

H&E: Do you have any anecdotes you can share about favorite projects from the book?

Drake: The last project featured, House in the Woods (in upstate New York), was bought by the clients on a whim in a split second. They were not looking for another

residence; they were already blessed with many. But they fell in love with this house in isolation, as did we. We lovingly restored it and updated it, as it was sadly in quite poor condition, and honored its elegant simplicity. It is definitely on the minimal end of our design spectrum, yet has many lush and sumptuous moments, which are emblematic of our work.

H&E: What are you loving right now in interior design?

Drake: We rejoice in the continued growth and enthusiastic embrace of sustainable solutions. The increased use of planet-friendly choices that are beautiful and luxurious – ceramic tiles glazed with pigments solely derived from industrial metal waste, gorgeous handwoven textiles that glimmer with recycled cassette tape fiber, and IceStone recycled glass and non-toxic pigment countertop material –are favorites of Drake/Anderson and our clients. Our clients are very excited when we talk about designing for healthy living and for a healthy planet and are ready to embrace it. The selection of sustainable material is quite vast, and only requires a conscious effort to incorporate.

H&E: Do you have a favorite type of project or space to design?

Drake: No, all spaces and rooms can be inspiring places to design. A small closet can be as aesthetically delightful to conceive as a vast ballroom!

H&E: What is it about your partnership that makes you so sought after?

Drake: Our voice of sophisticated, creative, sensitive solution creation is what draws our clients. The dazzle and drama, sometimes softly spoken, other times a louder aria, are certainly compelling characteristics.

H&E: Can you describe your creative process and how you work together? Has that evolved over the years?

Drake: The creative process is a joint dialogue. We work in an open office and the structure of our team fosters and encourages dialogue during the design phase, which we lead.

H&E: How do your designs vary depending on where you are and what type of property you’re designing?

Drake: Each project starts with the client: who they are, and what their needs are. Our projects are location appropriate. It would be very odd to do a tropical, beachy themed design in the mountains of Colorado. And, as

we are most excited by new challenges, by creating each time anew, through our lens, it is a pleasure to design for the geography.

H&E: There has been much conversation around interior design becoming more casual, comfortable and livable during the COVID quarantine period, when people were spending more time at home. Have you experienced this with clients, and, if so, how has it impacted your designs?

Drake: Comfort is different for everyone. Many of our clients – if not all – find a fine and polished home the greatest comfort. They want to live in a residence with great backgrounds, and polished, high-quality furnishings, pieces that are distinctive and have a voice and details and materials that are delightful and delicious. The desire to live well is as old as man.

Orient Express gets ready to ride the rails again.

The Orient Express epitomized luxury travel, lifting the idea of riding the rails to an exalted new standard between 1883 and 1977. After nearly 50 years, an exhaustive worldwide search, numerous copycat attempts and one very improbable happy ending, The Orient Express is back on track.

French architect Maxime d’Angeac, who has collaborated with French fashion houses like Hermès and Guerlain, is in the process of restoring 17 NostalgieIstanbul-Orient-Express cars, preserving original Art Deco details and making modern updates. The first passengers are expected to board in 2024, in time for the Paris Olympics.

“Reinventing the Orient Express for tomorrow from historical cars dating back to the Golden Age of rail travel has been nothing short of an adventure,” says Guillaume de Saint Lager, vice president of Orient Express, in a release. “It is a treasure that we have rediscovered: the last Orient Express, which disappeared for 10 years and has now been saved.”

The story behind that discovery of 17 original Orient Express cars is every bit as intriguing as the plot of Murder on the Orient Express, the 1934 Agatha Christie mystery novel-cum-feature film whose plot was said to have been inspired by the train. In 2015, French Ph.D. student and train enthusiast Arthur Mettetal was painstakingly researching the history of the Orient Express and searching the globe for remaining carriages. Upon spotting clues in a frame of an anonymously posted YouTube video,

Mettetal used Google Maps and Google 3D to delve deeper and pinpoint the cars’ location.

Mettetal, a photographer, and de Saint Lager then traveled to Poland for in-person confirmation and found 13 circa-1920s and 1930s Nostalgie-IstanbulOrient-Express cars on the border between Belarus and Poland. Despite being abandoned in harsh conditions for more than a decade, the cars were “surprisingly well preserved,” according to Orient Express, with intact Morrison and Nelson marquetry and “blackbirds and grapes-engraved” Lalique panels. “It was a true miracle and discovery of a lost treasure.”

After two years of negotiations, Orient Express was granted the right to purchase the cars. Four additional carriages found in other countries were eventually added to the lot, creating the new 17-car incarnation, with 12 sleeper cars, a restaurant, three lounges, and a van.

RAIL TRAVEL RAMPS UP THE LUXURY

When the inaugural Orient Express train left Paris’ Gare de l’Est on October 4, 1883, the 40 passengers on board got their first taste of plush rail travel, with comfortable, luxurious accommodations with sleeper cars, high-end finishes and upscale dining. Version 2.0 is being designed similarly, with what Orient Express calls a “contemporary vision of luxury and extreme comfort [that] will pay tribute to the legacy.”

Corridors will feature graphic, textured carpets below and vaulted ceilings above, along with generous windows and Lalique lamps. Suites will take on a rounded shape to “counter the strict lines and designs of the train,” as d’Angeac describes. They will boast private bathrooms and dressing rooms; large sofas that transform into plush beds; elegant wood, mother of pearl and bronze headboards; and those historic Lalique “blackbirds & grapes” panels.

The dazzling Presidential Suite will occupy an entire train car with beds adorned with original and restored solid mahogany and Nelson and Prou marquetry; Lalique panels; a gas fireplace; a beautifully finished bathroom; and the Cabinet de l’Égoïste, which Orient Express reveals is a “secret room dedicated to good vibes and epicurean festivities.”

The Orient Express Presidential Suite will capture “the essence of the future train,” notes d’Angeac. “It is a work carved out of excess, inspired by the geniuses and pioneers of Art Deco, Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, and Armand-Albert Rateau, and by the importance of refinement and the absolute finesse of detail.”

In the bar car, you’ll find Second Empire-style domed lighting, a reinterpreted “rail” motif from the 1930s; marble tables; bronze columns; an all-glass counter in tribute to René Lalique; and a mirrored ceiling — just a few more ways d’Angeac says the Orient Express will offer “an incomparable train travel experience, imagined through a contemporary vision of comfort and extreme luxury.” On each table is a call button for champagne service and another to ring staff.
