School News...School News Bentworth School District Hires Mass of New Coaches By Alice Harris

The regular February meeting of the Bentworth School Board was held on Febraury 21 at 6 p.m. In the public comment session, Lori Selvosky questioned the Board’s vote on school bus drivers. Lori Schrock, representing Bentworth Volleyball Boosters, stated the Boosters would rather wait to find the right applicant for the Varsity Volleyball Coach position than jump to a fast approval, and asked the Board to that direction. The following were approved: a conference request by Susie Macik, Federal Programs Annual Conference, March 25-28, 2012; Robert Niziol, PA Special Education Law Seminar, April 18, 2012; and adding Bentworth girls’ community softball as a district-recognized group.Bentworth High School Band field trip to NYC, April 27-29, 2012; a letter of collaborative agreement with NHS of PA Therapeutic Family Care Program; Catholic Charities agreement for student assistance-related services; and curriculum revision recommendations for 2012-13. The Board approved employment of

the following coaches: Tyler Hamstra, first asst. boys’ soccer grades 9-12; Kelly Haywood, first asst. girl’s soccer grades 9-12; Dawn Haywood, noncompensated asst. girls soccer coach; Chris Betts, first Asst. football, grades 9-12; George Morrell, asst. football, grades 9-12; Mike Shrader; head football, grades 7-8; Stacy Skerbetz, asst. girls’ basketball, grades 7-8; Derek Anderson, non -compensated asst. baseball; Mike Lynch, non-compensated tennis and travel to WPIAL at noncost to the district. Also under Personnel the following were approved: accept the resignation of Allen Eimer effective January 18 with the Board extending appreciation for all he has done for the for the district; accept the revised teachers’ retirement incentive resolution contingent upon BEA approval; accept the memorandum of understanding - payment of sick leave upon retirement contingent upon BVA approval. In the solicitor’s report the signing bonus contract for the gas lease with Rice Energy is contingent on clearance of title, which should culminate early March 2012.

SCHOOL NEWS BVA Elementary Schools Host Spelling Bee

Sara Ann Buza and Quinn Whitehead wait their turns behind Thomas Huffman in the gifted student spelling bee. Buza would become the eventual winner in a hard-fought battle.

Students in the elementary gifted instruction program at Belle Vernon Area School District had a great showing at the second annual gifted student spelling bee held February 7th at Frazier High School. Over 100 students participated in the contest. 5th grader Sara Ann Buza won 1st place in the intermediate division. 3rd grader Samuel West finished in 3rd place in the primary division. Thomas Huffman, Jake Sepesky and Quinn Whitehead finished in the top 7 in the intermediate division.

Senior BVA Football Star Signs with the University of Pennsylvania The versatile athlete Ian Dobbins has received an academic scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. He will be a wide receiver on the Quakers football squad this fall. Dobbins broke BVA's season record for receiving yards, racking up 754 yards as a junior. As a senior he became one of the most multipurpose players in the schools 46-year history as wide receiver, quarterback, running back, defensive back, kick and punt returner.
