Map of our Colchester Campus Your safety and security Our Colchester Campus offers a safe environment, but it is important to follow common sense tips to help you stay safe – whether you’re living on or off campus. We work closely with local police and Colchester Borough Council and in recent years have welcomed a Police Community Support Officer. This officer can answer any questions about how to stay safe on or off campus. Advice for staying safe on campus: Avoid walking or cycling alone in isolated areas or along isolated and unlit or poorly lit footpaths. Arrange to walk with others at night and keep to well lit streets. Remember short cuts are not always the safest routes. Avoid using mobile phones when walking alone or when in large crowds. Always lock your accommodation when you leave and don’t let strangers into your buildings. Use bank machines in daylight hours if possible, don’t use them if anyone suspicious is hanging around. When carrying a bag, keep the opening in sight or against your body. Don’t keep keys in your bag, and don’t carry large sums of money around – carry only what you need. Colchester Campus runs a Students’ Union Minibus to and from off-campus residences at night. Get a personal alarm, available at SU Advice Centre and Nightline. Be vigilant and report anything suspicious to patrol officers or, if off campus, the local police, by calling 101, and 999 in an emergency. Health and Safety is important. You can report concerns and find out more, online. www.essex.ac.uk/support/hsw

Fire safety Remember three important things to stay safe in the event of a fire: shout out, get out, stay out. https://www.essex.ac.uk/support/ emergencies You should also complete the online safety course via Moodle, and as a student living in University-provided accommodation, enter your log-in details and watch our quick, helpful fire safety video online. www.essex.ac.uk/freshers/restricted/ fire_safety.aspx
Our University Your safety is our priority and to keep you safe from fire and electric shock, we have rules on the use of certain electrical items. Please read our electrical safety guidance online. www.essex.ac.uk/support/electricalsafety Your campus guide 19
