13 students win Co-op Society's award By Mustafa Abubakar
T
he Scientific Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd (SMCS), University of Ilorin has doled out cash prizes of N10,000 each to 13 students of the University who excelled in their academic programmes. The cash prizes were presented to the students, who are biological children of members of the society, during its Ordinary General Meeting held on March 18, 2013 at the Science Lecture Theatre. The ceremony was witnessed by parents and lecturers of the awardees who scored as aggregate G.P.A. of 3.5 and above. The thirteen award-winning students include Babayemisi Kehinde, Medicine; Ajijola Munirat, Law; Adewole Adedeji, Electrical Engineering; Olaoye Bidemi, Microbiology; Abdulsalam Abdulmalik, Chemical Engineering; and Olayemi Michael, Agriculture. Others are Babayemisi Taiwo, Education Management; Adekola Khadijat, Biochemistry; Ogunniyi Oluwakemi, Economics; Ogunniyi Bolanle, Medicine; Agbabiaka Kareem, Microbiology; James Oluwaseun, Economics; and Odebunmi Iyanuoluwa, Economics. In his remarks, the President of the Society, Dr. O.M. Kolawole, said that the Society decided to give the award to any of the biological children of its members who merit it through academic excellence. He disclosed that similar awards would be extended to biological children of members studying in other universities. He said that the Society is one of the best cooperative societies in Kwara State and the most viable in the University with N51, 319,974.00k as share capital and total savings amounting to N171,320,797.06k. Dr. Kolawole said, “When I accepted the
responsibility of our society in September 2012, our total deduction from Bursary was N9, 191,686.33k per month due to the existing pension policy. But today there is a sharp improvement in our total gross income per month as a result of the introduction of a turnaround strategy of loan acquisition and repayment by members”. The President said that the society had reactivated its loan facilities and 'at present, there is no queuing up for any type of loans because members can now access the facilities as and when they desired'. Dr. Kolawole said that despite the society's financial constraint “we have acquired 30 plots of land at the cost of 3.6 million naira at Oke-Ose behind Unilorin Teaching Hospital along Pipe line Road”. Dr. Kolawole, who urged members not to allow the society to die, advised them to preserve, promote and protect it, calling for the support and involvement of members with special interest in the activities of the society. Also speaking, the President of the University of Ilorin Cooperative Union, Prof. Rotimi Omotoye congratulated the members of the society and urged them to keep the flag flying. Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Master Olayemi Micheal of the Faculty of Agriculture appreciated the management of the Society for its noble gesture. Present at the event were the Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. B. L. Adeleke; Secretary of the Society ,D. O. Jemirin; Treasurer of the Union, Dr.(Mrs) O. O. Oluwaniyi; Dr. T. O. Agbabiaka and Mr. Adewoye James; representatives of the Kwara State Ministry of Commerce and Cooperative, Mr. M.O Adebayo, Mr. Adeyemi, and Mr. ToyosiAkerele.
