Cleric stresses importance of prayer, hard work (Contd. from front page)
In the lecture, entitled “Islam, Predestination and the Power of Prayer”, Prof. Oladosu said that the discussion of Predestination is captured under the concepts of Al-Qada' wa al-Qadar (Divine Decree and Relationship) in Islamic Theology. He urged Muslims to consolidate their faith in the concept of “Divine Decree and Relationship”, stressing that it is important to be prayerful to attract the grace of Allah, avert affliction and ensure absolute rest of mind. The lecturer however explained that having faith in Predestination “reduces tension, results in rest of mind, generates hope, encourages one to forge ahead, eliminates depressions, yields contentment and confidence, makes life easy, facilitates the process of reconciling one's aspirations with the will of Allah, and leads to a peaceful life.” Prof. Oladosu said Islam is not just about praying, fasting, paying the zakaat, going on pilgrimage to Mecca or getting involved in other acts of worship, pointing out that “it is about the total development of individual and society: spiritually, religiously, morally, intellectually, educationally, socially, culturally, economically, politically as well as all other realms of development.” He therefore urged Muslims to use their freewill effectively to impact positively on the quality of lives of their fellow human beings. Earlier in his opening address, the Chairman of
the occasion, who is also a former Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. R. D. Abubakre, commended the Unilorin Muslim community for its efforts at giving the Central Mosque a befitting facelift. The Chairman of the Unilorin Muslim Community, Professor Abdulateef Adeleke in his welcome address, disclosed that the Muslim community was planning to redecorate the Unilorin Central Mosque to the standard that will befit the image of the University. He said the major work of tiling the Mosque's floor and walls had reached a substantial level of completion. Prof. Adeleke said very soon modern tents would be erected on all sides of the mosque to provide shades for worshippers who do not have space inside the mosque during Juma'at service. The lecture was attended by dignitaries from within and outside the University community including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Yisa Fakunle; the Deputy ViceChancellor (Academic), Prof. AbdulRaheem Lawal; a former Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Prof. O.
