Welcome to underhorses The underhorses project is born out of my passion for horses and photography. Underhorses will show all possible ways how to see horses, from horse lovers to professional photographers, all who like this subject. The internet with different platforms as facebook, instagram and others, is just like a big image gallery. I see this as a repository and will as well show projects found there. In this issue, it starts with the facebook group „As seen through horses‘ ears“, where photos from all around the world are posted showing the perspective through horses ears when you are riding. Dieter Müller takes photos for his own pleasure and has a special style. Photos of horses happen sometimes, but I hope it will happen more often as he shows the beauty and the being of them outstanding.

Yvan Morin Windsor, Quebec, Canada https://www.facebook.com/yvan.morin.735 Horses and camera, in time and space: they have suavity , graciousness , curiosity and keenness . Their bearing-a language ripe with details-and their grace as they allow us to play with them are some of the many thing i try to capture . Mostly with Leica M9 , Rolleiflex 3,5 and Pentax asahi k1000 . In a way to keep them close to their real nature, all horses here are in a loose housing stable wich mean in a system where horses are not put into individual stalls. It have to be large enough so several horses can be inside at the same time and walk freely in and out of the stable . No doubt mankind never captured the horse. It is he who came to us , for we are not strong or fast enough to catch him. Many thanks to Anne-Marie and her friends , ponies and horses Yvan Morin

Sabine discovered Marwari horses in India over 40 years ago. She had a kind of desire for the country, so she worked some seasons on horse farms in Udaipur. Back in Germany, she organises horse trails in India since 20 years now.

2002

I have a passion for horses and horse photography. The main focus in my pictures is not the romantic or competitive view of the horse, more artistic. These pictures are about one horse over a long period. But always discovering new aspects.

Stavros Stamatiou Greece http://stavrosstam.weebly.com/ https://www.facebook.com/people/Stavros-Stamatiou/1537524844 https://www.instagram.com/stamatiou_stavros/ I started taking photos of horses about 7 years ago. At the beginning I was only following an impulse- there was no plan, no specific purpose, nothing to guide me, to give me a direction. Eventually I realized that I was subconsciously following the echoes of some horse paintings I loved as a kid, like Salvatore Dali’s “The temptation of Saint Anthony” or Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica”, all meddled with some horse stories I have been told by my grandfather, who used to breed horses a long time before I was born. In my photography the horse is not a “beautiful animal”. It is a rebel, a symbol of power, a mystical instrument, a creature that defines its own environment. And above all, a silent martyr of the human history through the ages.

Uwe Bedenbecker Germany Instagram: uwe_bedenbecker Uwe devotes himself to free photography projects and is a keen photobook collector in addition to his work in the flower and plants segment. He is a self-taught photographer and expanded his knowledge in workshops with well-known photographers and photobook experts such as Wolfgang Zurborn, Markus Schaden and Harvey Benge. His work was shortlisted at the Dummy Award Kassel 2015 and he was a nominee at the ViennaPhotoBookAward 2016. In his photography, Uwe puts a special emphasis on the examination of the relationship between humans and nature in different cultures of our world. He finds his subjects mainly in cities as well as on remote islands: both are places where civilisation and nature encounter each other in an area of limited space. So far Uwe has published two zines: „Dialectics of Nature“ (published in the Zine Collection of Editions Bessard 2015) and „London Windows Nature and One Tattoo“ (Caravanbook, Spain, 2017). Uwe lives with his wife Bettina in Meerbusch and both love travelling and reading a (photo)book in their small garden.

Penny Taylor Canada www.instagram.com/penshoots Meltemi and I

Photography for me is a long-held passion. For 15 years, I had a side-line business in B&W fine art solo exhibitions and stock agency work. I always have a camera at hand and have now moved on to other fields. But my love of horses is still as strong as it ever was, and I often think there is nothing more beautiful to capture with the lens. As a young girl, I rode for years, spending all my spare time at the stables. In keeping with all teenagers involved with horses, my bedroom walls were covered with pictures of them, tack and riding gear were scattered everywhere and the delicious smell of horse was never far away. At the age of 18, I had to make a tough choice. To ride, or continue on with my piano studies to get my Bachelor of Music degree. Music won out, but it was a close call. After finishing school, the Siren of the Horse called me back. Since then and every November, I`ve taken time off my job to work at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show. This century-old event is part of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and as such is a huge part of growing up in this city. Once the Fair is in your blood, it never leaves. The Royal provides urban dwellers the chance to see first-hand the amount of hard work, responsibility and dedication that goes into show-life. It’s a much-loved and cherished institution. For exhibitors, entering the Main Ring at the Royal is a very big deal, as qualifying for the show has been part of their goal-setting for the end of the year. Top entrants in jumper, dressage, hunter, heavy horse, pony, harness and coach classes come from all over Canada and the United States. Many breeds are judged on the line, and worldwide show-jumping teams compete in big prize-money classes. This series is my homage to the Royal. From largely, behind the scenes.

Hugely passionate about horses as a teenager, I rode and showed for many years the horse I’m pictured with here, who was stabled north of the city. Her name was Meltemi, and she was a fractious mare and a giant at 17hh. With a strong will and mind of her own, she was a handful. In the beginning, if I had a dime for every time she galloped wildly around the ring during my lessons with me feeling like an insignificant fly on her back - trying desperately to regain control - I would have been a millionaire. Yet despite this inauspicious start, our bond was strong and she and I grew to be inseparable. Because of her, my formative years around horses were happy ones. I lived to ride. Fast forward. Two summers ago when I was listening to a jazz station online, a song called Meltemi came on. I looked at my computer in amazement as the title scrolled by and was instantly transported back to those years with my sweet girl. And only days later while I was at the waterfront, I took a double-take as a sailboat with that very same name on her stern glided by. (Great name for a boat actually, as the Meltemi winds on the Aegean Sea are known to be strong and tempestuous.) All of this was eerie enough given the time frame in which these events occurred, but when I mentioned them to a friend and sent her this image of Meltemi and I, she said….’Look at what’s on your shirt!’

Underhorses / 01 / As seen through horses ears

As seen through horses‘ ears www.facebook.com/asthe

In June, 2011, I had a funny idea for a Facebook group and called it „As Seen Through Horses‘ Ears“. I had a FB friend who had inspired me by posting many wonderful through-theears views and I thought it would be fun to see if other people would like to post similar views. I remember being amazed when the group quickly went over 100 members, and many of them people I DIDN‘T EVEN KNOW! :O I had expected many of my horsie friends to join but was astonished when it quickly spread like ripples in the water far beyond my own acquaintances. Soon it became clear that I wasn‘t going to be able to manage the group by myself, and I got a dedicated handful of volunteers to help with the admin duties. It was really tough in the first few years keeping the focus of the group and holding it to it‘s original theme. I know a lot of people probably thought I was a some kind of maniacal control freak, but I didn‘t want the group to morph into a general horse group with just any kind of photos. My fellow admins did a fantastic job of keeping true to the spirit of the group. If you were one of the original admins, please „stand up“ :D (I am afraid to name names for fear that I will leave someone out.) After 4½ years of many hours a day devoted to ASTHE, I retired the reins of the group and trusted that the capable admin group would take good care of my baby. And what a great job they have all been doing!!! With a mind-blowing membership of 45,289, ASTHE is a thriving and positive group. My heartfelt thanks go out to our current admins: Bill Shaw Bridget Tomchick Susan Ross Corneel Muus Helen Newton Marianna Haworth Heidi Bulfin But most of all, my thanks and sincerest gratitude goes to every one of you 45,289 members who post beautiful photos of your corners of the world, who enjoy the views of others, and to you who are inspired to get out and experience the world from horseback. Keep riding! -Lisa, the original Evil Admin
