At Under Canvas, we have the privilege of hosting you in some of the country’s most iconic destinations—magical places that inspire you to get outdoors and enjoy unforgettable experiences that connect you with nature and each other.
This year, we are excited to announce the opening of our 11th location, Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley. This beautiful camp, located just down the road from where Under Canvas began, is set on breathtaking Montana ranchland, with over a mile of frontage on the Yellowstone River and great access to the northern gate of Yellowstone National Park. We think you’ll love visiting this camp, in tandem with our original camp at West Yellowstone, to create the ultimate Yellowstone adventure.
We are also excited to announce our new luxury, outdoor resort brand, ULUM, with our first location south of Moab, Utah, opening this spring. ULUM provides an elevated outdoor experience with a contemporary lobby overlooking Canyonlands National Park and the majestic red rocks beyond, hot/cold dipping pools, a full-service restaurant featuring Southwestinspired cuisine, juice and espresso bar, and our signature canvas tents. Experience another level of comfort in a spectacular setting.

            11 Transformational Escapes
At Under Canvas, we believe that nature is the best architect; access to the outdoors is a right, not a privilege; and unplugging as a means of recharging is essential for our health and well-being.
Inspired by the safari experience, Under Canvas offers immersive upscale outdoor accommodations that embrace their natural surroundings, while featuring an array of indoor luxuries. Bridging the unique gap between travel and the outdoors, it is our intention to allow everyone to discover the wonders of nature in both comfort and style.
Over the years, Under Canvas has grown to become the leader in upscale, outdoor hospitality, with 11 camps located in iconic destinations throughout the U.S.
Dedicated to our mission of enhancing access to extraordinary places and outdoor adventures, significant investments in the guest experience have been made to the Under Canvas portfolio for the 2023 season. And we’ve expanded, as well. On
the heels of a new Bryce Canyon camp, we recently introduced Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley, making for an unprecedented greater Yellowstone adventure.
In endless pursuit of new, spectacular destinations for our camps, we’re continuing to deliver the transformative Under Canvas experience throughout the country’s most splendid natural settings.

            A Mindful Approach
By staying at Under Canvas, you take part in our mission to inspire connections with extraordinary places, people, and the planet by enhancing access to the outdoors.
Connecting with nature encourages us all to be ambassadors of the environment, our most precious commodity. This manifests in the design choices we make and the experiences we curate for our guests. Here are some of the ways we uphold our mission.
          THOUGHTFUL INNOVATION
Pioneering the outdoor hospitality space, we employ thoughtful enhancements designed to elevate the guest experience—through curated adventure programming, culinary innovation, and localized design aesthetics that reflect the surrounding natural environment.
          GIVING BACK TO NATURE
As lovers of the outdoors and keepers of the beautiful lands that surround our camps, we invite guests and employees to contribute to The Nature Conservancy—joining in their pursuit of creating a world where people and nature can thrive together.
          UNPLUG AND RECHARGE
Wi-Fi is intentionally not offered to our guests, so that they can disconnect from technology and reconnect with others. Guests can recharge their electric vehicles with Rivian Waypoint chargers at select camp locations.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Guests will notice some design features throughout camp that go a long way toward preserving the great outdoors: pull-chain showers, faucets that automatically shut off, low-flow toilets, and a towel reuse program. Accordingly, our camps use significantly less water and energy than a hotel of similar size. Additionally, low-level lighting is used throughout camps, mitigating light pollution and amplifying the night sky.
          LAND CONSERVATION
Under Canvas camps—each with dedicated, undisturbed green spaces—are designed to minimize disturbance and maximize open space. Land donations, adaptive use, and partnerships with local conservation organizations are also part of our commitment.
          IN GOOD COMPANY
Partnering with brands who share the same care for our planet, we offer plant-based EO bath products made in a zero-waste facility, West Elm furnishings that support sustainable initiatives, and amenities from lululemon, which has committed to 100% renewable electricity for its owned and operated facilities.

            Making Magic at Under Canvas
Morgan Clemens—who has worked at Under Canvas camps in Yellowstone and the Great Smoky Mountains, and now serves as Operations Manager at Under Canvas Zion—is passionate about providing guests with oneof-a-kind outdoor experiences that “they can take with them for the rest of their lives.”

A native of New Jersey who was drawn to Under Canvas by a desire to leave her busy life in NYC’s East Village behind, Morgan explains, “I love being the bridge for guests who have not experienced anything like Under Canvas before. It’s the unique destinations that drew me to Under Canvas in the first place and have kept me hooked ever since.”
Some of Clemens’ favorite Under Canvas moments have taken place on Opening Day. “Opening Day is always so special. After months of working as a team to get camp ready for our guests, there’s so much
excitement and anticipation in the air. On Opening Day in 2021, it was lightly snowing and looked so beautiful at camp. It was magical in every way.”
Morgan also loves helping couples plan and create the wedding of their dreams. Last summer, she facilitated a wedding for a couple that she had first welcomed to Under Canvas the summer before. “Working with them from their first visit to Zion until their wedding day was so special, and the gratitude that I felt on their wedding night was something I’ll never forget.” Morgan continues, “For many of our weddings, I am often the person picking up the bride in the golf cart and bringing her down to the wedding ceremony. Getting to spend a few minutes with the bride, and helping her step into a next chapter of her life, is an experience that I cherish so much.”

            A Breath of Fresh Air
Sanam Tahan, a registered dietitian nutritionist certified in integrative and functional nutrition who lives in Orange County, California, knows the importance of total body wellness.
“Wellness is defined as ‘the state of being in good health,’ which, to me, encompasses every decision you make throughout the day—from your thoughts, to your activities, to the way you fuel your body,” says Sanam.
“Nature is one of the greatest tools we have in our pursuit of wellness. Many studies have shown the benefits that nature has on our mental and emotional state, including reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.”
Sanam had the opportunity to achieve a moment of balance and well-being at
Under Canvas Lake Powell–Grand Staircase and recently shared her experience with us.

“Under Canvas was truly one of the greatest experiences and an incredible opportunity to reset, revive, and restore,” Sanam says. She describes how, during her stay, she enjoyed being physically active while connecting with the wonders of nature in an immersive and powerful way. “Back at camp,” she continues, “the communal eating area provided an amazing opportunity to create new friends over a delicious and balanced meal.”
She left Under Canvas Lake Powell–Grand Staircase “filled with gratitude and happiness,” with a sense of wellness that only nature can provide.

At 1,529 feet in elevation, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point in the park and on the U.S.’s eastern seaboard. You can drive to the top (where there’s a half-mile paved pathway loop), but the effort of walking the two miles and 1,150 vertical feet up the mountain’s North Ridge Trail is worth it for

the views along the way—Eagle Lake, Dorr Mountain, and Bar Harbor.

          Queens Garden
          1.8 miles
Descending from the famed Sunrise Point, wide open vistas and scenic views of Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos define the Queens Garden Trail. Out and back, this short hike is the easiest
available in the national park. Descending below the canyon rim, hikers can choose to loop back up to the rim or combine it with Navajo Loop for a longer, more strenuous hiking experience.

Once you hop off, you’ll hike around 1.3 miles up to the turquoise waters of Grinnell Lake, filled with meltwater from the Grinnell Glacier above Bonus: It’s all downhill back to the ferry. Making boat reservations prior to visiting is recommended.

    GRAND CANYON
          South Kaibab
          Trailhead
          3 miles round-trip
From the South Rim, the Grand Canyon looks vast, but until you get down into it, you can’t grasp the actual scale of this wonder. The Kaibab Trail will

deliver. The steep but well-trod path drops 1,110 feet in 1.5 miles to your turnaround point at Cedar Ridge, where you’ll find toilet facilities, space to spread out for a snack, and an awestruck understanding of the geological forces that formed the canyon. You will not find any water, though. Give yourself twice as much water and time to make the climb back up. If you’re lucky, you’ll pass the park’s mule train heading up or down the trail, delivering supplies and people to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon.
          GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS
          Grotto Falls
          2.5 miles round-trip
On a hot day, park at the Trillium Gap Trail parking lot and hike to Grotto Falls. The trek comes with a unique payoff: the chance to cool off behind the cascade of Grotto Falls, the only waterfall in the park you can walk behind. Once you cool down—from the misting water or from plunging into the swimming hole created by the falls—you can either hike back to the trailhead or continue on up the trail that eventually hits the summit of 6,593-foot-high Mount Le Conte.

There’s no better introduction to hiking the arid, trail-less slickrock landscape typical of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument than Devils Garden, a onesquare-mile collection of sandstone hoodoos, arches, and toadstool rocks formed over the last 166 million years by erosion and weathering. None of the trails here
are marked, and that’s part of what makes hiking here so interesting. Bonus points for packing a meal—a picnic area here has tables, fire pits, and elevated grills.

The paved trail is hilly (you’ll have to climb some stairs), but it’s short enough that even the youngest hikers should have no trouble traversing the 0.6-mile loop. The prize? To complete the hike, follow the north trail to Grand Geyser, Beauty Pool, Oblong Geyser, and Giant Geyser before the trail joins again with the Upper Geyser Trail.

Experience Everything Yellowstone Has to Offer
There’s so much to see and do in the vast landscapes of Montana near Yellowstone National Park. With this year’s opening of our North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley camp, you can now experience the best of Yellowstone at two Under Canvas locations.
On the west side, view famous geysers like Old Faithful and hike through serene meadows with beautiful alpine streams. On the north side, see geothermal hot springs, the park’s best wildlife spots, and stunning Paradise Valley. Here’s an itinerary for the ultimate Yellowstone adventure.

Land at Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport and drive 45 minutes to Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley. Check in to your upscale safariinspired accommodations, then grab coffee and lunch from the lobby tent before heading off on your first day of adventure in Yellowstone National Park.
In the park, drive to Mammoth Hot Springs and stop at Albright Visitor Center to have your National Parks Passport stamped. Enjoy one of the many easy trails or boardwalks that lead to the natural hot springs, or take a short drive to the incredible travertine terraces and limestone formations created by geothermal activity.
Head back to Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley, then wrap up your day with riverside al fresco dining, complimentary s’mores, acoustic live music, and more.
Wake up early and enjoy complimentary guided yoga, then fuel up with breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee or latte. After breakfast, spend a relaxing few hours on a Luxury Scenic River Trip (which can be planned through the Under Canvas Adventure Concierge).
This relaxing trip departs directly from camp, floats along tranquil Yellowstone River, and provides numerous opportunities to enjoy picture-perfect views of the Gallatin Mountains and wildlife such as bison, osprey, and more.

Return to camp and watch the sunset as you enjoy a local ale, Montana-farmed smoked meats, or any of our locally and sustainably sourced menu options.
          FUN FACT:
The rivers in Montana are fed entirely by snowmelt and are warm enough to swim in during June, July, and August. Be sure to bring your bathing suits!

        DAY2
Check out of Under Canvas North Yellowstone–Paradise Valley and head south toward the park’s West Entrance. On the way, stop at the iconic Old Faithful Geyser, located in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin in the southwest section of the park. Its viewing area is the most accessible and visitor-friendly in the park so it makes for a great pit stop between camps!

After visiting Old Faithful Geyser, head to Under Canvas West Yellowstone in the afternoon to relax in a hammock by the Madison River and marvel at the incredible scenery. At happy hour, grab a cocktail from the Bronco Bar, a restored horse-trailer-turned-full-service bar. After a locally sourced dinner, you can complete the evening by enjoying the hum of live acoustic music on the outdoor patio.
Enjoy breakfast from our café-style dining restaurant, Embers, then get ready for an unforgettable horseback-riding adventure (which can be planned through the Under Canvas Adventure Concierge). Conveniently located close to camp, the rides will lead you to breathtaking views of Hebgen Lake, the Continental Divide, the city of West Yellowstone, and Yellowstone National Park.
          FUN FACT:
At our West Yellowstone camp, you’ll likely be welcomed by rescue horses from our neighboring property and may see a family of moose drinking from the Madison River. Please be respectful of the wildlife and maintain your distance so we can continue to peacefully live alongside them.

After a thrilling day of adventure, head back to your upscale safari-inspired tent and tuck into a plush king-size bed for your last night under the Montana stars.

With the addition of Under Canvas Bryce Canyon in the summer of 2022, you can now road-trip through the Southwest’s most epic national parks and monuments via the Grand Circle—stopping at some (or all!) of Under Canvas’ five camps along the way: Grand Canyon, Moab, Zion, Lake Powell–Grand Staircase, and Bryce Canyon.
Our suggested 1,100-mile itinerary allows you to choose your own adventure as you travel among the spectacular vistas, majestic red rock formations, and picturesque sunsets of the American Southwest. From the tents at our camp you can see Lake Powell, soaring cliffs, buttes, towers, and other desert rock geology. Sights you don’t want to miss here are the Vermilion Cliffs, Horseshoe Bend, and Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase’s on-site Elephant Slot Canyon.

    GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

More than 6,000 feet deep and up to 18 miles wide, the canyon is truly grand. From the South Rim side, you can drop down into it from several trailheads, going from the piñon and juniper forest on the rim to other, ancient worlds of rock—stepping further back in geologic time with every foot you descend.
          MONUMENT VALLEY
From the canyon rim, it’s several hours to the Navajo Nation’s Monument Valley (Tse’Bii’Ndzisgaii in Navajo). The sandstone towers and formations here are as stunning in person as they look in the dozens of Western movies filmed in the valley.

        Grand Canyon
Did you know that 80% of Americans cannot see the Milky Way from where they live? Light pollution from cities causes “sky glow” and can extend great distances. In addition to erasing our view of the stars, high levels of light pollution also harm wildlife, waste energy, and disrupt our sleep. When you stay at Under Canvas, you have the opportunity to see the dark night sky in a different light. At our Bryce Canyon, Moab, Grand Canyon, and Zion locations—Bryce Canyon, Arches, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Parks are all certified Dark Sky Parks—you don’t need a telescope to spot constellations and revel in the sky’s brightest stars.

Under Canvas is committed to doing our part to reduce light pollution by following guidance from the International Dark-Sky Association, which has been focused on protecting the night from light pollution since 1988. By pointing lights down, eliminating glare, dimming and turning lights off when not needed, and choosing warmer-color light, we are protecting the nighttime environment, ensuring the safety of our guests, and helping you reconnect with the night. Follow these steps when you return home to continue doing your part to turn down light pollution and turn up the stars. Learn more at DarkSky.org.
          ROOTED IN NATURE:
Every Full Moon has a name that is rooted in nature. The moon phase names we use today often reflect the changing seasons and surrounding environment, including the Harvest Moon in September/October, Strawberry Moon in June, and Pink Moon in April (inspired by the pink flowers that bloom in the early-spring season).
The Full Moon is great for night hiking while the New Moon is great for stargazing!

WHAT TO LOOK UP FOR IN 2023
           GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE OCTOBER 14

A total solar eclipse visible across much of North America, the Great American Eclipse will be particularly beautiful in the Southwest desert region. Because it will not completely cover the sun, it will create a stunning “ring of fire” around the moon.
           PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE OCTOBER 28
Visible over Europe and most of Asia and Africa; will be seen rising over the extreme eastern Americas and setting over Australia.

     FULL MOON, SUPERMOON JULY 3
The moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the sun and its face will be fully illuminated. Near its closest approach to the Earth, the moon may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.
