Kenan professorship named for cultural arts aficionado The Thomas S. Kenan III Distinguished Professor of Jazz honors a true cultural arts aficionado. The C.D. Spangler Foundation established the professorship and named it for Kenan, a dedicated benefactor who has supported a variety of arts and music programs at institutions across North Carolina. A founder and trustee emeritus of the N.C. School of the Arts, Kenan is well-known for his love of the arts, especially music. “Tom Kenan has devoted his life to promoting education, preserving our state’s history and sharing his love of the arts with others,” Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said. “UNCW is grateful to have a professorship named for a philanthropist who appreciates great music and believes in nurturing young performers by providing them with outstanding faculty like Kenan Professor of Jazz Joe Chambers.” Kenan, who is vice chairman and director of Flagler System Inc., recently secured family support for the university’s renovation of Kenan House and Wise Alumni House, now celebrating its 100th anniversary.
