Fall/Winter 2022 Industry Trends

Elegance and structure combine for the fashion trends of fall and winter 2022. Structured shilouettes with dain ty details seem to monopolize the runway this sea son. Here are the key components you should follow:

• Maxi skirts

Letterman jackets

Tall boots

Tailored blazers

Leather

Unique knits

Think Y2K meets prep with a splash of edgy leather ac cents for an effortlessly cool look. Adding a dramatic maxi skirt elevates any sheer top or knit sweater. Accessorize with furs, netting, multiple belts, platform shoes of any kind, and ties. Lots of ties. Most importantly, have fun with layering!

My name is Cassidy Burel and I came to UNCG as a freshman in 2016. Although my passion is apparel design, I came to UNCG’s apparel pro gram not knowing how to sew at all. During the first sewing class, I felt so behind, but was deter mined to improve as fast as I could. Over the next year I spent most of my time sewing samples from 10 cent patterns I purchased from Recon sidered Goods trying to grasp at the concepts of pattern making and sewing. Practicing with this diligence and Threads club having so many op portunities to showcase my designs during their annual fashion shows, gave me the momentum I needed to start to succeed in class and sculpt my passion into the niche market I work in now.

I officially established my business in fall of 2019 with my biggest commission to date. This was also my senior year at UNCG. Although this seemed as good a time as any, as you all re member, spring of 2020 (my college graduation date) the world shut down from the pandem ic. Although my aspirations originally had me moving to the big city after graduation, COVID decided otherwise. Instead, I spent four months paying the bills making hundreds of masks.

After everything started opening back up in fall of 2020, I began working as the in house fash ion designer and customizations specialist at a local bridal shop. This opportunity fast forward ed my sewing experience and equipped me with the tools I needed to hit the ground running with my own business. Now, I operate CassB by De sign from my home studio here in Greensboro and specialize in custom bridal and eveningwear as well as gown alterations/customizations.

If I had any advice to offer, I would say the follow ing. Firstly, as your plans unfold and end up not being anywhere close to what you had prepared for, don’t allow the changes to discourage you from your passion and your dreams. Put in the work and constantly strive for excellence. And I think you’ll be pleased with the results wherever that may land you. And secondly, for anyone interest ed in apparel design and garment construction, I highly encourage you to spend some time learning how to do alterations. Although UNCG taught me the fundamentals of design, if you are interested in a specialty, spending time within that area is the only way to learn all that you need to know and to have all the tools you need for success.”

Internship Recap

I interned at Colony Brands in Monroe, Wisconsin during the summer of 2022 as a technical design and quality assur ance intern. Colony Brands is the parent company of many catalog brands for old er consumers including Monroe and Main, Midnight Velvet, and Ashro (an afrocentric catalog). Some of my job tasks included:

Pre-fitting garments before fit meetings

• Attending fit meetings

Creating fit corrections and fit com ments for vendors

• Researching competitive brands and their grading

This internship provided me with fit knowl edge in both missy and plus in all types of apparel from activewear to jeans to suit sets and more. I also got to work with grading and menswear. Colony Brands allows you to choose your interests and makes sure your intern ship allows you to learn as much as possible.

My top tip for students is be open to anything and always say yes. I ended up not only work ing in apparel but also completing a project for homegoods because I was open to anything and wanted to learn as much as possible.

Before I took on the demanding role of mama to my sweet baby girl, Cameron, I was working in NYC as a Senior Designer at Hanesbrands on their Champion Women’s Life line. It was a po sition that was sort of created for me because when I first started working on the line it was just a fringe concept for Champion. I ended up creating the first women’s reverse weave prod ucts and built what started as 4 pieces into a full line of women’s streetwear for the brand. What a dream come true to have such an impact on the industry and create the first exclusive ly women’s products for such an iconic brand :)

It definitely wasn’t a straight shot to this role out of college, I worked my way up through var ious positions with several companies. I started off working for a hosiery mill in Asheboro, NC and then a seamless apparel mill - also in Ashe boro, NC ha. While those jobs definitely weren’t the glamorous fashion roles you read about, the positions exposed me to many different facets of the apparel process, and because the companies were smaller and less corporate, I was able to do more in my role than I likely would have been able to otherwise. It was those positions that pre pared me for making the move to NYC to work

in the fashion industry there. I moved there with a month or so of guaranteed freelance work but that was it - no job. As soon as I settled, I con tacted several of the companies that I’d worked with while in NC and one of them was Calvin Klein Performance. They initially offered me a freelance position and that turned into full time after a few months. Man, that was the hardest job I’ve ever had haha, I was working from 9-9 (or later) most nights and occasionally weekends but I learned so, so much. I also made an effort to build a great network of other designers in the city and it was a friend who referred me to Champion!

My advice for current CARS students would be to stay focused on what you want to achieve in your career and work hard to achieve those goals. Also, build a good network and, of course, never stop learning/creating!

Student Project: Bloom

This project was completed for RCS 584: Advanced Retail Analysis 3 as part of the Accelerated Masters Program. The project was submitted for the ES RAP (Educators for Socially Responsi ble Apparel Practices) competition, and is currently a semi-finalist. The project was to create a socially responsible busi ness, and create and entire business plan for said socially responsible business. We decided to focus on sustainability in the fashion industry and period poverty in sub-saharan Africa. Bloom is an athletic apparel company that utilizes scrap fabric to create reusable pads for girls in Africa. We wanted to create a unique and innovative company that can positively impact a social issue while also being sustainable in its practices.

“keep an open mind and always be ready to learn from those around you”

I had the amazing opportunity to intern at the Kohl’s headquarters in Milwaukee, WI as the intern on the Trend team. Kohl’s is a well-known depart ment store retail chain that sells a combination of clothing, shoes, home and kitchen accessories, bed ding, toys, and more. Some of my job tasks included:

• Attending team and company category meetings

• Researching and downloading trending images, color palettes, and more from our major trend sites (WGSN, Fashion Snoops, Edited, Tagwalk, etc.)

• Assisting team members with the creation of vari ous presentations by means of imaging, numerical data, sorting, and more

• Meeting with various members of other de partments and teams to build relationships and networking skills

• Competing and participating in Design Challenges and Innovation Think Tanks to improve flat sketch es, color and mood board creation and research, public speaking abilities, and more

This internship proved to be an amazing experience and opportunity for me to not only learn about the industry from a corporate perspective, but also allowed me to ex plore my interests in design, trend, business, and so much more. Kohl’s makes it a priority to utilize your networking skills during the internship so that you can meet as many people in as many areas of the company as possible, sole ly to help you figure out what you may be interested in.

My tip for students is to keep an open mind and always be ready to learn from those around you; making connec tions any way you can might change the course of your future without you even realizing it, and being open to new experiences is extremely important in this industry.

The worse they can tell you is no.

If you are looking for an internship with this company, please feel free to email me, asbenne4@uncg.edu, and I would be happy to pass your name along.

Everlasting Elegance

Think of all the times you buy something and only wear it once. I designed the Everlasting Elegance dress to avoid this problem. The dress can be worn 28 different ways, and is made out of a thrifted bedsheet.

The dress was made as my final project in APD 252: Patternmaking and Draping. We had to design any dress inspired by sustainability. As a consum er you can create a more sustainable wardrobe by finding different ways to wear and style old clothes.
