I wasn’t nervous until I saw my roommate Chloe, because she looked like a mean girl but I was very wrong. What was the hardest part about moving in? I think the hardest part about moving in was too many opinions about where to put stuff.

What could make move in easier? If I would have brought less people to move in then it would have went a lot smoother. Was it hard leaving your family? Leaving my family wasn’t hard because I was ready to be on my own.

Lantz Lowe Where were you coming from? High Point, NC Who helped you? My mom, brother and sister. Were you nervous about moving to UNCC? I was nervous because I was worried about making friends. What was the hardest part about moving in? I think the hardest about moving in was bringing in those big trunks of clothes. What could make move in easier? If the trunk that held my clothes was lighter then move in would have been easier. Was it hard leaving your family? It was very hard

Best of Small Groups

What was your favorite group activity? Why? A: My favorite small group activity was definitely going to Pelican's Snowballs because it was really fun. Would you recommend this activity for future use by UTOP mentors? A: Yes, absolutely! What was your least favorite group activity? Why? A: I think it was the second group activity because we sat around listening to music. Do you think the small group activities initiated bonding? A: Yes, I think so. If you could propose a different small group activity what would it be? Why? A: Maybe we could go to a restaurant and redeem our pocket points because we can't drive or leave campus right now. Interview: Teona Wilson

Interview Conducted By: Jazmine Atkinson

Best of Small Groups What was your favorite group activity? Why? A: My favorite small group activity was when we recreated the Q&A that was done in Ground Zero. It really gave us the opportunity to learn more about each other within our small groups and build a foundation that I really liked.

Would you recommend this activity for future use by UTOP mentors? A: Absolutely, I think that it builds a trust and acknowledgement between all the mentees and mentors. It made us closer and gave us an opportunity to get to know each other a little bit better.

What was your least favorite group activity? Why? A: Probably board games because I don't know how to play a lot of board games and they aren't that fun to me. Also, I hate the learning curve so taking the time to sit and learn (them) defeats the purpose to me.

Do you think the small group activities initiated bonding? A: Yes, Absolutely.

If you could propose a different small group activity what would it be? Why? A: I think a really fun group activity would be to recreate some of the challenges on YouTube, such as the humming challenge and the whisper challenge. Although you aren't doing it in front of an audience, it’s fun to do it amongst yourselves. I think that a lot of those challenges teach humility and you learn how to be comfortable in your own skin around other people.

U T O P

During the first weekend at UTOP, the mentors and mentees volunteered at The Second Harvest Food Bank to give back to the community. The purpose of this organization is to eliminate hunger in 19 counties by the solicitation and distribution of food.

Get to Know the Staff! Prior to volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank, UTOP students were able to meet with Ms. Hagerman to learn more about what Second Harvest has to offer! Ms. Hagerman has served as a devoted member, Volunteer Coordinator of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina for two years, and continually expressed her love for helping others in her community!

Question: To whom does Second Harvest cater? Ms. Hagerman: SHFB packages and provides goods to agencies, they then directly deliver the goods to families in need!

Nancy Hagerman Volunteer Coordinator Second Harvest Food

Question: Please briefly explain the history of Second Harvest Food Bank. Ms. Hagerman: SHFB was founded in 1981, and became a member of the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, Feeding America in 1982.

The Feedback of SHFB

“ It was a great way of spending our Saturday morning knowing that we were making a difference in the community; It was uplifting.” -Claudia

“I felt it was amazing and it’s always good to give back to the community. It showed me how blessed I am and to never take things for granted.” -Carledward

The Takeaway of SHFB

“It was a great experience to help and benefit the community. It was also a good way to know that we were being productive and not wasting our time on things less important.” -Tiffany

“I was glad to help out the community.” -Jon

What is Ground Zero? Ground Zero is a safe space which allows students to discuss controversial topics that may not be touched on otherwise. “I think that Ground Zero is a really good opportunity to get people talking about and educating themselves on social issues such as racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and new terms and things.” -Meaux

“As a feminist, I greatly appreciate what Ground Zero sought out to do. Getting people out of their comfort zone to talk about topics often considered ‘taboo’ or ‘controversial’’ is great because willing to view things from another perspective can help us all perform at our peak.” -Damary

What’s The Best?

UTOP’S Got Talent

Teona (left) performed her impeccable spoken word piece about colors and the stereotypes related to them.

Mentees and Mentors rapped (above) over the instrumental beats of Skrilla by Kodak Black and Free Smoke by Drake to create the UTOP 17 Cypher.

Carson(Left) and Maxwell (Right) played a percussion music piece called “Recycled” on buckets as they showed off their drumline talents to the crowd.

The Choir (above) led by mentee Carledward took the Talent Show crowd to church as they blended their beautiful voices when they sang gospel song “Blessed” by Fred Hammond.

Carson, Devozshe, Maxwell, and Ebuka (Left to Right) performed an “Evolution of Dance” showing off dances starting from the 80’s through present time.

Q: What inspired you to write a poem for the Talent Show? And did you enjoy showing it as your talent? “I really wanted to do something different and I already had an idea for a poem in my head. But, I was kind of nervous that people were not going to enjoy it because poetry is different. The crowd seemed to love it and it made me happy to see that.” -Teona

Q: What was your favorite part about drumming for the Talent Show? “The ending of our piece was definitely the best part of our performance. The crowd went insane when I broke the bucket and stabbed a hole in it with my sticks on the last note of the music. It felt amazing beyond belief to watch the reactions as I walked away.” -Maxwell

Q: When did you come up with the idea to not actually rap for the Cypher? “I was out in the parking lot with the Cypher and I had the Naruto headband on so I just went with the random hand motions as my “rap.” The subtitles for my “rap” was all just random Japanese words on Google translate. I got the idea from Mute Spittah on the rap battle videos.” -Sharif

Q: Did you have any previous modeling experience? If not, then how did you feel doing it for the first time? “No, that night was my first time modeling in front of a crowd of people which was pretty nerve wracking at first, but, it was all fun so I would definitely do it again.” -Jada

Q: How nervous were you to start off the show with your impressions? “I was kind of nervous. I was more nervous earlier in the day than when I showed up on stage. And hearing the laughs from the audience in the beginning made me know that I had the performance down.” -Brendan

Q: What did you love most about singing in the Talent show? “I loved sharing my voice with my friends and the people in the crowd. I really enjoyed hearing how I affected (them) during my performance.” -Zabria

Fourth of July Festival This summer, the UTOP community travelled to Gastonia, North Carolina to celebrate the Fourth of July America’s Independence Day. Despite the inclement weather, the students came together to enjoy themselves through food, fun, and entertainment.

The festival included a variety of games, rides, vendors, and live entertainment. Many of the students devoured turkey legs, while other students chose to visit the local pizzeria. After eating, the group gathered around the pavilion to witness a performance by soul-funk band, Soul Escape. Both the mentors and mentees enjoyed the performance by forming a Soul Train line and dancing to the electric slide. While waiting for the fireworks, the group participated in “Riff Off” a singing game inspired by the 2012 motion picture, Pitch Perfect. Although the students left before the fireworks, the trip to Gastonia, North Carolina was the spark that initiated a summer of growth.

Exit Strategy One hour is all the time UTOP Students had to find their way out of the Exit Strategy theme rooms. “I was placed in Subject Zero-- one of the hardest rooms in the facility,” said Jazmine Atkinson. The rooms ranged in theme and difficulty level. “It was challenging for me and my group because there were multiple puzzles that needed to be solved in order for us to move on to the next problem,” said Jazmine. Although Jazmine’s group did not make it out on time, Maxwell Monroe and his group did. “It took critical thinking skills, teamwork and patience to solve the puzzles. My group made it out with forty five seconds to spare,” said Maxwell. The Exit Strategy activity was a fun way for students to exercise their problem solving and teamwork skills, while also engaging in bonding time with their peers.

Atlanta Trip The UTOP Community travelled four hours south to Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, July 22. Upon arrival to Atlanta, the mentees had the chance to visit the APEX Museum, featuring African American history. “I do not consider my work at the APEX Museum a job. I love that I get to talk about my people everyday. What’s enjoyable for me is that I get to educate visitors,” said Zeeema Lovefire, APEX Museum employee. Though it was small in size, the museum made a large impact on the group’s knowledge of African American history. “Visiting the APEX museum made me feel more connected with my heritage. I had no idea that there were so many African American entrepreneurs at that time. “It was very inspiring to learn their stories,” said Adrianne Lyons. After leaving the museum, the group walked to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center and the Ebenezer Baptist Church. The story and accomplishments of Dr. King had a great impact on students. “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. inspires me because of the ways that he helped African Americans overcome the struggles of the Civil Rights era. He taught me that no matter how hard things may get, you have to keep fighting for what’s right,” said Devozshe’ Odum. For many students, the highlight of the trip was visiting Lenox Mall-- a four story mall with over 200 stores. “Although the mall was kind of boring, it was cool being able to see all the people, stores and sales,” said Shania Warren.

Atlanta Trip

Atlanta Trip After a long day of walking, UTOP students traded in their shoes for skates when they traveled to the Metro Fun Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Although skating was not everyone’s strongest suit, it was an enjoyable learning and leadership experience. "My skating skills were a little bit rusty at first, but as I kept skating my skills got better. I didn't fall so I guess I did better than most people,” said Lantzen Lowe. The UTOP community helped each other to skate to the best of their ability. “I am an amazing skater. My friends and I used to go skating a few times a month. It was fun teaching Raehdojhn and Ebuka how to skate,” said Kaiylah Wallace.
