Public health researchers work to build a global response to outbreaks Dr. Jose Szapocznik, professor and chair emeritus at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences, and Dr. Jorge Saavedra, executive director of the AHF Global Public Health Institute at the University of Miami, are working to develop a global treaty to prevent pandemics


and respond to infectious disease outbreaks. Dr. Szapocznik serves as Head of Secretariat of the Panel for a Global Public Health Convention.

Sylvester Researcher Addresses Hispanic Cancer Care Disparities during Panel Discussion with Dr. Jill Biden Dr. Patricia Moreno, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences and lead of evidence-based survivorship support care at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, recently participated in a panel discussion with First Lady Jill Biden in San Antonio, Texas on cancer prevention and treatment among Hispanics/Latinos. Miller School Investigators Compare Recovery from Open Versus Robotic Bladder Removal Surgery Dr. Isildinha Reis, research professor in the Division of Biostatistics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences, is co-author of a study that analyzed how quickly patients recover and resume pre-surgery activities following open versus robotic bladder removal surgery.

Sylvester Hosts Fourth Annual National Firefighter Cancer Symposium Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez, associate professor of public health sciences and deputy director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center's Firefighter Cancer Initiative, shared research findings and best practices on firefighter cancer prevention and control during the National Firefighter Cancer Symposium 2022.

HONORING DR. PAUL FARMER


The Department of Public Health Sciences mourns the passing of Dr. Paul Farmer, a global health hero, who died unexpectedly in Rwanda at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife Dr. Didi Farmer, and their three children. Dr. Farmer was an accomplished, renowned global health practitioner and humanitarian. He served in various research and administrative capacities, including as co-founder of Partners In Health, pioneered community-based treatment strategies to provide high-quality health care to the world's most vulnerable populations, and authored numerous publications on health, human rights and social inequality. The DPHS deeply feels this loss, and collectively prays for his family. [Photo by John Ra / Partners In Health]

CONFERENCE ON RETROVIRUSES AND OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS 2022


Dr. Adam Carrico presented on various novel approaches for optimizing HIV prevention in people who use substances during the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) which took place in February 2022. The CROI convenes basic scientists and clinical investigators to discuss the latest research on human retroviruses and related medical conditions, such as HIV, hepatitis viruses, and SARS-CoV-2, among others.

FLORIDA NODE ALLIANCE UPDATES The Florida Node Alliance (FNA) now has two minority researchers that are members of the National Academy of Medicine, including Dr. Guillermo "Willy" Prado and Dr. Hortensia Amaro of the University of Miami and Florida International University respectively. Drs. Prado and Amaro have been advocates of minority health, as well as active mentors of racial/ethnic minority researchers. The FNA is one of 13 research centers of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network which is housed in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
