M.P.H./M.S.P.H. graduates attend annual graduation reception after two and a half years The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine held a celebration reception for the first time in two and a half years for the graduating MPH/MSPH students. This year’s reception took place May 10 th,

Doctoral student of Prevention Science and Community Health has been awarded a


Diversity Supplement Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health As a Latina doctoral student, Edda Rodriguez, as well as countless others, have experienced the professional and personal difficulties faced by minorities in the United States. Her doctoral training is helping her to overcome these difficult moments and providing her with the skills needed to serve minority communities. Through her training Edda has learned the importance of finding a good mentoring team that is committed to supporting students from underserved communities.

M.P.H. student was awarded the first-place award for the University of Miami Graduate and Post-Doctoral Research Symposium The fourth annual Graduate and Post-Doctoral Research Symposium was celebrated in April 2022, at the Shalala Student Center on the Coral Gables Campus. The symposium featured groundbreaking scholarly research presented by graduate students and postdoctoral associates across University's disciplines.

Third-year M.D./M.P.H. candidate is one of the few medical students whose research has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Spanish-Speakers and Sun Protective Behaviors: A Cross-Sectional Study” focused on the association between the primary spoken language and sunprotective practices. Sun-protective practices include using sunscreen, wearing long sleeves and avoiding direct sunlight—all critical tools in preventing skin disorders such as melanoma, non-melanoma skin cancer and actinic keratosis.

The Journal of Public Health Student Capstones (JPHSC) is a faculty/practitioner-reviewed public health journal dedicated to publishing scholarly work completed by undergraduate and graduate public health students as part of their field work and capstone experience. ASPPH Public Health Summer Fellowship Program Recent graduates from CEPH-accredited, ASPPH member schools and programs of public health are invited to apply for the ASPPH Public Health Summer Fellowship Program for advancing key strategic initiatives in academic public health. This is a one-year paid training position and the main office is located in DC (though remote work is a possibility). The deadline to apply is June 20, 2022. Graduate commencement ceremonies celebrate more than 1,300 students During Thursday’s two commencement exercises, Ricardo Lagos, a former Chilean president, encouraged graduates to strengthen democracy and respect the dignity of all humans, while Catherine Lhamon, with the U.S. Department of Education, implored students to “make the choice to stand for others and for equity.”

Did you know? MD/MPH Class of 2022, graduated on Wednesday, May 11th at the Watsco Center. There were 47 graduates and all will be moving into residency on July 1, 2022. Congratulations!

TakeMeBack Tuesday: PhD candidates in Epidemiology Sandra Garcia, MPH, CPH, and Amrit Baral, MBBS, MP, were mentored by Dr. Vidot in their presentations during the 2022 Cannabis Networking and Education Symposium. The symposium took place at the Coral Gables Campus on April 20, 2022. Sandra Garcia's presentation: Diabetes Prevalence among Cannabis Users by Race and Ethnicity: An Analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005-2016. Amrit Baral's presentation: The Review of the Endocannabinoid system (ECS).
