Community and Academic Partners Collaborate on Kindergarten Readiness and Graduation Rates in Neighborhoods Served by Mailman Center


A new study – published in the January edition of the Maternal Child and Health Journal – highlights the positive outcomes in child wellbeing associated with community-academic partnerships in Overtown and East Little Havana. Renae Schmidt, M.P.H., senior research associate and Dr. Viviana Horigian, M.D., M.H.A., professor of the Department of Public Health Sciences served as co-authors of the study.

Mental health experts offer insights on how to overcome anxiety Dr. Viviana Horigian, professor in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences and a trained psychiatrist who studies depression, anxiety and substance abuse, is one of four University of Miami mental health experts who offer insights on how to combat anxiety. Many adults and children have reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety as a result of the longevity and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Grant Will Support Research to Examine Cancer Risks Among Wildland Firefighters The United States Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $1.5 million to a consortium of scientists that will examine occupational exposure to carcinogens among U.S. wildland firefighters. The primary goals of the research study are to evaluate acute exposure to carcinogens and measure biomarkers of chronic carcinogenic effect among wildland firefighters. The project is titled, “Wildland Fire Fighters: Exposure Assessment, Carcinogenic Effects and Risk Management.”

The Department of Public Health Sciences (DPHS) has received over $19 million in total awarded grant funding from February 2021 to the present. DPHS continues to be a highly successful research department which has demonstrated an increase in NIH research productivity over the years.
