Welcome to the University of Minnesota Law School

Dean Garry W. Jenkins

WE HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR VISIT! Throughout your time on campus, you’ll learn why we are one of the most respected and collegial law schools in the country. We welcome you to: An extraordinary community where you can pursue your passions. Whether

Service program, involvement in one of our 35+ student organizations, and regular engagement with professors, distinguished alumni, and other successful lawyer-leaders who have made a difference in their chosen profession. One of the most exciting, beautiful and affordable metropolitan areas in the nation. With its extensive parks, theater, lakes, sports teams and foodie restaurants, the

Twin Cities “has it all,” according to the New York Times, which gushed over our “urban authenticity, cultural sophistication, and Midwestern friendliness.” Law students enjoy the many benefits of studying in one of the best places in the world to witness and participate in law in action with a large number of private firms of all sizes;, state and federal courts; federal and state government offices; a state legislature; a robust nonprofit legal community and the fifth largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies close at hand. A powerful network for life. A Minnesota Law education will take you wherever you

want to go—and serve you well. As a graduate, you’ll become part of the strong and vibrant network of Minnesota alumni who have assumed leadership roles in law, business, policy, and beyond around the world. We believe you have what it takes to be a lawyer and a leader who makes a difference. We are excited to meet you and look forward to sharing what makes this a community like no other. JOIN US.

“ONE OF THE BEST”

“One of the best things about my 1L year was how supportive the career center was (and still is!) of all students, but especially those of us going into public interest work. I particularly enjoyed a networking session dedicated to government and nonprofit employers where I was able to speak with alumni in the state legislature, the Attorney General’s office, and federal agencies.” —LEAH REISS, 3L

1L

EXPERIENCES

“My favorite part of the 1L year was spending time with my study group. We would help each other work through tricky concepts from class, but we also made each other laugh along the way. After a long day of studying, we would treat ourselves to a nice dinner at one of the Twin Cities’ many amazing restaurants. Building those relationships has been one of the best parts of law school.” —PHILIP DE SA E SILVA, 2L

“My best memory from my 1L year has to be doing oral arguments as part of Legal Research and Writing. It was a lot of fun arguing a legal position I worked on all semester and doing it against one of my good friends from my section. Afterward, my section mate and I called each other to give feedback on our performances, then chatted as friendly adversaries, just as I imagine opposing lawyers do in real life.” —MICHAEL KINANE, 3L “The best part of my 1L year was our Law in Practice course. I came to law school completely unsure of what being a lawyer actually meant. Throughout Law in Practice I was able to meet with pretend clients, write memos, participate in negotiations, and even argue before a judge. I had the chance to experience what it would really be like to be a lawyer and it made me so much more confident in my decision to go to law school.” —TESSA WRIGHT, 2L

TONY SANCHEZ, 2L Undergrad: Florida State University Hometown: Port Saint Lucie, FL Email: sanch771@umn.edu

“My favorite experience at UMN Law has to be my moot court class! In this class I’ve been able to practice oral arguments derived from an appellate brief that I wrote myself in front of an actual attorney. More so, this class has developed the skills that I use now in my law clerk position where I work in appeals and complex crimes. UMN Law has provided me with the opportunity to develop my advocacy for clients and made me feel prepared to be an attorney!”

ANNIE BROOKING, 2L Undergrad: Fordham University Hometown: St. Louis, MO broo0289@umn.edu

“Minnesota stood out as a unique school that was academically rigorous, with excellent career outcomes where students could work in the legal market of their choosing, all while fostering a community of collaboration and support that was entirely different from other schools I was considering. I was impressed with how the alumni described this emphasis on collegiality as the building blocks for personal and professional relationships upon which they built their legal careers. In my time at Minnesota I have felt that the support of my classmates, faculty, and staff enables me to be the best version of myself and encourages me to reach new academic and professional heights.”

Uptown is south west of downtown Minneapolis and 2.4 miles from the Law School. Metro Transit offers numerous buses that directly connect Uptown to the University.

We have provided this guide for your convenience as you consider housing options in Minneapolis. For additional housing information, we encourage you to visit the Facebook group or Admitted Student Website under the Housing & Transportation tab. LAW.UMN.EDU

Where Students Live (Continued) NEIGHBORHOOD: Northeast

Northeast has a unique and quirky urban culture with a plethora of art galleries, farmers markets, brew pubs, ethnic restaurants, and family-run businesses.

Another popular neighborhood is Northeast (aka “Nordeast”). The most common types of rental property in NE are homes and duplexes, though a few high-rise apartments have been built recently. Northeast is a great option for students who are looking to live in a more residential area with a community feel plus easy access to great restaurants, shops, Downtown and the Law School. The bus lines running from NE to Downtown and the Law School are very efficient, including a number of express buses which run directly to the University. Although Northeast does feel more residential than Uptown or Downtown, the community has commercial districts stretching along the major corridors of University Avenue, Central Avenue, East Hennepin Avenue, Broadway Avenue, and Stinson and New Brighton Boulevards towards the city limits. Additionally, many rental homes have yards, which can be a big draw for those with dogs or children.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Seven Corners Students live in a number of apartment buildings that are literally across the street from the Law School. Convenience and accessibility are top priorities for those that select to live in this area.

Several apartment buildings are located across the street from the Law School.

16

Fortune 500 Companies The Twin Cities is home to 16 Fortune 500 companies, many which are located in downtown Minneapolis.

18 MEET MINNESOTA 2023

NEIGHBORHOOD: Downtown Downtown is adjacent to the Seven Corners neighborhood (where the Law School is located). Although parts of Downtown are within walking distance to the Law School, there are many buses that connect Downtown to campus in as little as five minutes. Home to many Fortune 500 companies such as Target, U.S. Bancorp, and Xcel Energy, the Downtown neighborhood offers many places to unwind. Here you can find an array of restaurants and bars, anything from award-winning chili and burgers to Thai, vegetarian to pizza, fine-dining to casual. To beat the winter cold, Downtown features nearly 8 miles of skyway systems to connect almost every building in Downtown. You can leave your apartment, head to the downtown Target, catch a bite to eat at the newest restaurant, and take in a movie without ever stepping foot outside! There are many communities offering affordably priced one and two bedrooms. Downtown also has many condos for rent by owner, which can be great for students looking to live in this vibrant area.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Loring Park The Loring Park neighborhood is on the southwest corner of downtown Minneapolis. It houses a park of the same name which hosts various cultural, social, and political events. The park is surrounded by apartment buildings, many dating from the early 1900s. Recent construction in the area has brought many new town homes and condominiums to the area. Loring Park is locally known for its diverse social environment and as a nexus for many arts and cultural events. Notable buildings in the area include the Walker Art Center, Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis Convention Center, and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

NEIGHBORHOOD: Dinkytown Dinkytown is located immediately north of the University’s East Bank campus. It is a very popular housing option for both undergraduate and graduate students. Traditional student housing options are plentiful. The Washington Avenue Bridge Bus Circulator provides easy access from the East Bank campus to the Law School’s front door.

NEIGHBORHOOD: North Loop The North Loop neighborhood is located west of Hennepin Avenue, near downtown Minneapolis. The area has experienced tremendous growth since the construction of nearby Target Field. Many bars, restaurants, and small retail shops contribute to the vibrancy of the North Loop. The North Loop is popular among young professionals. Accordingly higher-end apartments with many amenities are the most common housing found in the North Loop. Several bus lines as well as the Green Line light rail run from the North Loop to campus, making it easy for students to get to the Law School in 15-20 minutes.

“I wanted to attend law school where I could expand my legal education outside of the classrooms, and Minnesota Law’s strong commitment to experiential learning programs caught my eye. Law in Practice was one of my favorite courses during 1L year and helped me tremendously during my summer job. As a 2L, I’ve been enrolled in the law school’s bankruptcy clinic. Interacting with real clients and working together with them to find an opportunity for a fresh start has been extremely fulfilling and motivating for me. I was super nervous to work on real cases but the supervising attorneys and the clinic staffs have been very supportive and encouraging!” LAW.UMN.EDU

“I chose UMN Law because of the people. They were passionate about everything related to the school: the classes, the clinics, the summer opportunities, and the city!
