Future  So

BRIGHT FY 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

The stories in these pages showcase some of the ways we’ve worked to bring a    brighter   future   to each of our patients. Our staff’s outstanding care for the children who come to MWPH makes our hospital unlike anywhere else. Nowhere is that more evident than in the bright smiles of our patients and their families as they heal and grow with hope in their hearts. In this report, you’ll read the amazing story of a young girl who suffered a terrible accident at the age of two, yet has gone on to regain extensive function — all while keeping a sparkle in her eye. We’ll shine a spotlight on the tireless work of our clinicians, as exemplified by pediatric nurse practitioner and lead poisoning program coordinator, Barbara Moore, PNP. You’ll learn about the ways our Learning Assessment Center is helping families meet the educational needs of all learners and is deepening its relationships with schools across the region. You’ll find out about our integrated car seat program — the only one of its kind in the state – dedicated to ensuring that each child we care for is safe while traveling home, no matter how complex their medical needs. You’ll be inspired by the ways our community gives back to our hospital: we were honored to be the recipient of funds raised during the Gilman Lower School’s Read-a-Thon this year. You won’t believe how much these kids read for the benefit of MWPH patients. At MWPH, we’re confident that the future is bright indeed, thanks to the ongoing support of our generous donors and supporters. Your help makes these stories — and many more like them — possible. Thank you. Together we’re building a “future so bright” for MWPH’s patients and their families.

Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital provides    family-focused,    integrated   care   to children with serious, chronic or complex medical needs. Since 1922, the hospital has helped children heal from illness and injury, and now treats nearly 9,000 patients each year. With locations in Baltimore City, Prince George’s County, and in the community, the 102-bed post-acute hospital is a jointly-owned affiliate of the University of Maryland Medical System and Johns Hopkins Medicine.

MWPH IS DEDICATED TO: •

Providing a healing environment where children can recover from illness and injury

Teaching families the skills they need to care for their children and instilling confidence for the transition home

Sharing the expertise and resources best suited to care for our patients

Providing treatment to all patients in a loving, caring environment

A Philanthropy-Filled

FUTURE The Gilman Lower School Read-a-Thon has been in existence for over 30 years.  Its goal is to foster the love of reading in the Lower School’s students. The Read-a-Thon also teaches the value of philanthropy — how important it is, and how good it feels to give back. “Before the Read-a-Thon begins, our students ask sponsors — family, friends, and community members — to pledge a certain amount of money for each 15-minute block of time the student reads. It could be a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter, or any other amount,” said John Xanders, teacher and outreach coordinator for the Lower School. “Then, students have four weeks to read as much as they can.” When the Lower School’s avid readers were looking for a cause to support for this year’s Read-a-Thon, passionate Mt. Washington Pediatric Foundation Board member and Gilman School parent, Beth Armacost, took the opportunity to suggest MWPH. School leaders were touched by the hospital’s importance in the community and the impact the gift could make for MWPH’s patients. “We also liked the fact that MWPH is not only local — it’s right down the hill from our school,” Xanders said.

The Lower School students raised

for MWPH. About 90 percent of the school’s students participated in this year’s Read-a-Thon.

Gilman School selected MWPH as the beneficiary of this year’s annual Read-a-Thon fundraiser — and you won’t believe the results Although the students couldn’t visit the hospital’s patients directly because of safety precautions, Jill Feinberg, vice president of development and external affairs at MWPH, came to Gilman to show the students what their fundraising efforts would mean for MWPH. She talked about what it means to be a young philanthropist, giving time, talent, and treasure to support organizations you believe in. “The boys were so enthusiastic,” she said. “This philanthropic project matches perfectly with the Gilman values.” When Feinberg came back a month later, for the Read-a-Thon’s conclusion, she was amazed. The Lower School students had raised $26,570 for MWPH. About 90 percent of the school’s

students participated in this year’s Read-a-Thon. The Lower School’s gift will go toward the hospital’s Rosenberg Outpatient Center expansion, helping the hospital serve more kids with outpatient services in rehabilitation, psychology, and primary care. “We’ve increased the amount of money we’ve raised almost each year,” Xanders said. “This year, our goal was $25,000 — and we exceeded it. We were delighted with our partnership with MWPH.” “I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the Gilman Lower School community,” said Armacost. “My hope is that MWPH will not just benefit in the short term from the Read-a-Thon, but also begin a long term relationship with Gilman and its families.”

“We’ve  increased  the amount of money we’ve raised almost each year. This year, our goal was $25,000 — and we  exceeded  it. We were delighted with our  partnership  with MWPH.” JOHN XANDERS, Gilman Lower School teacher and outreach coordinator

Barbara Moore, PNP is dedicated to fighting lead poisoning, the number one cause of preventable developmental delays in children

COMMIT

to a Lead-

MWPH proudly has the only clinical lead poisoning program in Maryland.  Led by pediatric nurse practitioner Barbara Moore, PNP, the multidisciplinary program reaches beyond the hospital’s walls to address the sources of lead poisoning, as well as its symptoms and long-term effects. An elevated level of lead in the blood can harm a child’s brain function and cause developmental delays. Children most often come into contact with lead through lead paint, which is common in homes built before 1978. Lead poisoning is 100 percent preventable, but it takes a community coming together to overcome the challenge. Moore came to MWPH in 1995, working in the inpatient unit. Three years later, she took ownership of the hospital’s lead poisoning program. When Moore started in the program, the Baltimore region was in the midst of a lead poisoning epidemic. “I saw 150 children in the program’s first three months,” Moore said. “It took off from there.” Moore redesigned the hospital’s lead poisoning services into a nurse practitioner-led program with an inpatient component

as well as an outpatient clinic. In addition to Moore’s expertise, the program’s multidisciplinary team includes nursing, child life, and social work professionals, all working together in the outpatient clinic. Children are typically referred by primary care providers after a lead screening test has shown high levels of lead in the blood. Moore and her team start with a health history and physical exam and also developmental screening to assess delays. If the lead level in a child’s blood is too high, the child is admitted to MWPH for chelation therapy. At any given time, Moore and her team are following hundreds of patients. A key part of the program’s success is Moore’s dedication to comprehensive community involvement. She works closely with the Baltimore City Health Department, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and community health providers and is a member of the governor’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Commission. Moore and her team assist with referrals to early intervention programs for children with special needs, including Child Find and Maryland’s Infants and Toddlers Program. The team also

-Free Tomorrow refers to MWPH’s behavioral psychology, neuropsychology, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. It’s critical to identify the source of lead in the child’s environment and to help the family address the problem. Moore often makes referrals to grant programs, environmental programs, and state HUD programs that are available to help families remove lead from the child’s environment. “The most rewarding part of the job is when we’re able to help families work together to address the problem on all fronts,” said Moore. “We aim to support children’s developmental progress, leading to their return home to a safe, lead free environment.”

“I love my job because it combines   family-focused   care  with coordination of services, pulling it all together for the families we work with.” BARBARA MOORE, PNP, MWPH

SAFE & SOUND

As anyone who has tried to install one knows, children’s car seats are incredibly intricate.  Installation guidelines vary depending on the car seat model, the child’s age, size, and weight, the car make and model, available car seat connection types, and various other factors. Year after year, studies are released showing that nearly 90% percent of infant and child car seats are installed incorrectly. To address this need, MWPH has established an integrated car seat program, which is funded by the Mt. Washington Pediatric Foundation. With this program, MWPH became the only hospital in Maryland for children with special needs to require that each inpatient has a car seat check completed before the child is discharged. “Proper positioning of a child’s car seat can make a life-or-death difference. It’s one of the few times you can see an immediate impact for your investment of time,” said Melissa Beasley, MWPH’s community advocacy manager. “Our hospital uses extensive time, energy, and resources to help each child heal and grow at MWPH to the point that they’re healthy enough to go home. It just makes sense to take that extra step to ensure that they’re safe on the way home.”

MWPH’s integrated car seat program ensures safe travels for discharged patients

In addition to car seat installation, the program includes parent or caregiver education and training, as well as tolerance testing to make sure that each child can handle being in a car seat. “Parents are typically surprised that the car seats are so complex,” said Lauren Brown, MWPH’s lead car seat technician. “Once we go through the training and preparation process, though, they are happy and relieved that their child will be safe when traveling in the car.” At car seat installation appointments, technicians educate parents about everything related to their child’s car seat. Appointments can last an hour or more, particularly for kids who will be going home with special medical equipment. After the techs demonstrate correct installation, the parents practice installing the car seat themselves, until they are comfortable and can do it consistently. Technicians also do a lot of problem solving with parents, helping them accommodate multiple car seats or adding levelers to counteract the sloping seats popular in many cars.

The integrated car seat program is one more way that MWPH is different from other children’s hospitals. “Parents often say, ‘My child was admitted to another hospital before coming to MWPH, and they just wanted to know that we had a car seat. They didn’t take the time to help us install it correctly,’” said Brown. MWPH’s commitment to our patients’ well-being extends beyond our doors, as we help get them back on the road to a sunnier tomorrow.

Learning   Assessment Center

BRILLIAN

in the Commu

It’s natural for parents to want to give their children the best possible opportunities to learn and grow.   Yet for children with learning disabilities and other challenges, school can be a tough place to be. MWPH’s Learning Assessment Center (LAC) helps families meet their children’s educational needs by providing comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations for elementary to college-aged students. Jill Gatzke, PsyD, the LAC’s clinical coordinator, has years of experience in assessing educational challenges and helping kids and families find solutions. In June, the LAC moved to a new space in Mt. Washington Village. With a bright new office, plenty of nearby parking, and a selection of the area’s best shops and restaurants, the LAC’s new

location makes it easier than ever for families to take advantage of its services. In addition to the move to Mt. Washington Village, Dr. Gatzke has focused on developing partnerships with local schools. Earlier this year, she gave a presentation on the non-traditional learner to school counselors and teachers from the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS). The LAC team has attended school fairs and other functions in order to meet parents and school staff, share information about the services the LAC provides, and answer questions. The LAC has also sent letters to area schools, describing the center, what it offers, and how it can help schools meet the learning needs of all of their students.

“Getting to know the schools in our area, as well as the students and parents they serve, allows us to make the most   effective    recommendations   possible … Making sure the schools know about how we can help means that more families will contact the LAC to schedule a consultation.” JILL GATZKE, PSYD, LAC clinical coordinator

unity

MWPH’s LAC shines a light on opportunities for students with learning differences

“We have turned our attention to getting the word out about the LAC’s services for a few reasons,” said Dr. Gatzke. “First, getting to know the schools in our area, as well as the students and parents they serve, allows us to make the most effective recommendations possible. Second, making sure the schools know about how we can help means that more families will contact the LAC to schedule a consultation.” The LAC’s evaluations create a comprehensive picture of a child’s education-related strengths and challenges. These assessment results — and the recommendations that develop from them — help families make decisions about school placement, receive standardized testing accommodations, and better meet their child’s educational needs. Every evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist who specializes in learning disabilities. Assessments are tailored to the student and assess areas including processing speed, memory, attention, concentration, and test anxiety, in addition to academic skills (such as reading, writing, and math). The LAC continues to grow as it settles in its new location and spreads roots into the Baltimore community. Dr. Gatzke and the LAC team are poised to shine an even brighter light on the educational challenges of children and youth.

This is a story about a little girl surpassing expectations and looking ahead to a bright future, despite unimaginable challenges.  In 2010, Hailey Withers was a typical two-year-old, living with her mother in Florida. Then, the unthinkable happened: she fell in the bathtub and broke her neck. Her catastrophic injury was the result of fused vertebrae in her neck, which had been present at birth but had not been noticeable to her family or her pediatrician. She received lifesaving care in Florida and was eventually transferred to Maryland, seeing specialists of all kinds. The accident had left Hailey paralyzed from the neck down, unable to move her arms and legs, and the long-term outlook was disheartening. “They told us she wouldn’t ever talk, wouldn’t be able to eat on her own, wouldn’t be able to walk — wouldn’t be able to do anything,” said Dawn Acab, Hailey’s grandmother, who has had custody of Hailey since 2012. Three years ago, Hailey met Virginia Keane, MD, a pediatrician at MWPH who specializes in working with children who have complex medical needs. Dr. Keane had hope that with a specialized rehabilitation program, Hailey could make progress.

In many ways, Hailey is able to be just like any other fourth grader in her class. When she’s not at school, she loves to draw, build things, and play with Barbies. Her favorite color is pink, and she loves to sing and dance. Hailey is now handling more and more of her own self-care and continues to see Dr. Keane every three months.

“Hailey has amazing self-motivation, and she is not afraid of As she worked with her therapy team, Hailey began to achieve hard work. We’re hoping that with additional therapy, she will milestones.
