LIFE-SAVERS BEHIND THE SCENES

By Karalee Quig, Medical Technology, ‘03

April 19-25 was Medical Laboratory Professionals Week. Here, Karalee Quig offers a reminder of the vital role laboratory scientists play in health care.

“When you are to get blood drawn, you go to a lab. Because phlebotomists draw the blood, they become the face of the lab, but that’s just the first step of many your sample goes through.

“After collection and processing, the sample may be tested in a variety of departments in the laboratory. There is a chemistry department. Hematology makes sure your blood cells are in the right amount and shape. The coagulation department finds out what clotting factor is misbehaving. Urinalysis is checking for glucose in your urine. Microbiology grows organisms and tests them against antibiotics. Immunology does the workup to determine if organ donation is a match.

“Clinical laboratory scientists are an integral part of your health care team. We are ensuring your physician has accurate test results for an accurate diagnosis. You may not see us, but we are behind the scenes literally putting our blood, sweat — and any other sample type needed! — into our work.”
