By Maheen Aziz With an acting career spanning many years, Yasir Hussain has always been in the news for good and bad reasons. He had a knack for acting since his childhood and made ways for himself to the place where he is today. “I will not say that I wanted to become a doctor and accidentally became an actor or some senior actor saw me performing and my life changed after that. I always wanted to be an actor. I loved to perform and act; from school plays to theaters, I would not miss anything.” The skilled actor remained closely associated with Kopykats production who produced some extraordinary plays that too written by ace writer Anwar Maqsood. The plays in which Yasir performed included one of Anwar Maqsood’s best plays – Half Plate, Pawney 14 August, Sawa 14 August, Siachin, and Aangan Terha. His performance was always electrifying and engaging. The best of his theater performances remembered even today is his role of Akbar which was originally played by the late Saleem Nasir. It would not be wrong to say that Yasir actually won hearts with his stellar performance. The understanding of craft and excellence came not as a gift but it speaks volumes of Yasir’s patience and belief. “There was an NGO where I wrote scripts and directed plays but never got the credit. From designing a complete set with devotion to getting a minor role of a statue that even you would not notice, I have seen it all.” “I learned from these experiences and never lost heart. I believed in myself and so gradually ways opened and I started making TV appearances.” Like any other actor, Yasir’s marriage with the actress Iqra Aziz also garnered a lot of attention and criticism as well, but he responds to it aptly by shrugging off what the media has been saying about their marriage. “Now I only have to swear upon GOD that it was neither staged nor Iqra ever knew that I would be proposing her at the award ceremony. I am very happy with her and see everything being positive in my life since she has come in.” He never shied away from responding to reality and has been courageous to establish a headstrong stance aboyt anything that aims to decry him. I doubted if Iqra has ever asked him to stop commenting on people or their personal life. Yasir disagreed and said that it was never anybody who dictated him to begin or stop. “Iqra is never in the picture. Although she has come to defend me quite a few times but I have always asked her not to. She has never asked me to stop or initiate anything. I do what I feel is right. Now since I have stopped responding to social media trolls is because I now don’t care and feel like letting things be as they are.” Many actors do put their children’s pictures on Instagram and share them on social media with their fans, however, some people don’t welcome it at all and grind celebs children too while trolling. As now that Yasir and Iqra have an adorable son, Kabir Hussain, I asked him what is his strategy going to be if ruthless people pass comments on him too. “To be very honest, people have always showered love towards my son. I don’t know why. They might have shown hatred or passed harsh comments on us but when it comes to Kabir they have always loved him. And he is my son, when the time comes he will give it back to people the way he will receive it.” I first met Yasir Hussain at a movie’s premiere where in between the hustle-bustle we couldn’t talk properly. It took me some time to bring the courage to go to him and initiate conversation as his image has always been of an angry and rude actor who seems to don’t like journalists and anyone around him, basically has a problem with everyone on social media and real life. “I don’t know why people think of me like that. I might have a straight face but that anyone can have. My image as an arrogant actor is made up by the people who find every act of mine a controversy.” I seconded Yasir as he is one of the down-to-earth, approachable, and pleasantly garrulous person. Upon talking about past controversies, The Lahore Se Agay actor denounced them and called them the truth of the moment which was stirred unnecessarily by the social media and keyboard warriors.

“I have only one controversy to my name and no one speaks about it ever. It was when the Turkish actresses were being hired as models in Pakistani commercials or brand shoots. I was the one who spoke about it and raised voice on behalf of all female actresses of my country. This has never been talked about as my other posts become a highlight of the day.” The versatile actor made his Lollywood debut as Moti in Wajahat Rauf’s film Karachi Se Lahore which was also written by him. He acted in the sequel of the movie Lahore Se Agay. Yasir shared that he has a very good relationship with Wajahat and he loved working with him. However, he is not seen in his upcoming movie Parde Mein Rehen Do. “Wajahat is a visionary director and producer. He has produced brilliant movies and I have acted in two of them. I also have a guest appearance in PMRD. We all work as a team and that is what matters.” He also sheds light on the banning culture and how this is sabotaging the creative freedom that the industry should have “Censor policies should be improved now. We are not living in Zia Ul Haq’s ear. The process should be easy and smooth. Producers are making movies on their own without Government’s support because art is the last or maybe of no concern to them at all. But how long will the producers stand if there is no support from the authorities? Javed Iqbal has been banned in Pakistan but it has reached the UK film festival. I don’t understand what they found in the film that the previous government banned it. But I strongly hope that it will release soon in Pakistan.”

I don’t know why people think of me as an arrogant person. I might have a straight face but that anyone can have. My negative image is made up by the people who find my every act a controversy He also said that writers should have the freedom to write and execute their stories. There shouldn’t be any halt or dictation in the creative process. “This stifles the voice of the writer and also brainwashes the audience who then become used to watching Saas Bahu dramas and don’t understand the ideas and stories above those lines, such as Javed Iqbal. It’s not their fault if they will say that Javed Iqbal was tedious and boring because this is how their minds have been trained.” The actor has headed back to the direction and one of his projects Koyal is currently on-air while the other starring Faysal Quraishi and Zuhab Rana is in the post-production process. Explicating his directorial experiences, he said that he finds it quite fun to direct. “The first thing I like about being a director is that I don’t have to dress up or wear makeup and I am not in a character. But one thing I would like to mention is that there should be an increase in the production value.” Giving us great scripts such as Karachi Se Lahore and Lahore Se Agay, Yasir is working on a few new scripts which he will share soon. He also joyously tells about his friends in the industry and how blessed he feels having them. “I am friends with almost everyone but to name a few I would like to mention Wajahat Rauf, Sonya Hussyn and Asad Siddiqui.” From dramas Dareecha to Baandi, Jhooti to Badshah Begum, he has been proving to be a prodigy without concern for the feedback and what the critics are writing. He is true to his word and headstrong that is what makes him cherish every moment of his life without regretting a bit. Self-effacing, bold and crape demist, Yasir Hussain continues to grow as an actor as well as a person, he is a force that keeps going stronger.

Naveed Raza is one of the highly praised actors of the Pakistani film and drama industry. Every now and then his name circulates in the news not only because of his acting or projects but often because of his audacious and upfront statements which he doesn’t regret at all. In this exclusive conversation with BOLD, devil-may-care and versatile actor, Naveed Raza shares his journey of becoming an actor, discusses controversies, and how he keeps rising in the industry.

I have never liked their lifestyle and this is my opinion. I don’t like him. What I said for Qandeel Baloch is what I will say again and again as I never liked or supported her agenda and way of gaining popularity. It is surprising to see the level of hypocrisy of this nation. This is not a better way to live, she could do hundred other things.

remembered for their work then Nabeel Zafar was not only doing Bulbulay. Just because he doesn't socialise with the biggies so producers and directors think he is not appropriate for any role in their serials.

She was killed in honour killing yet you would say this?

Award shows are fancy nights in which you get free sponsored drinks, food and wear a nice designer dress. Being in an award show is good for your PR as you get photographed. Every channel has their own award show and they give awards to their dramas and actors only.

I do stand against honor killing and the injustice. I have done a film on Mukhtara Mai and I was playing the lead in it as a hero. I just did not like the way Qandeel lived her life. That is all about it. I do not try to be politically correct all the time, this is my personality and I will always speak the truth which people can't digest. I am not here to please anyone.

Hero bannay ki tarang was a big platform? Did your career start right after winning the show or you had to struggle?

Here I would like to clear that Hero Bannay Ki Tarang did a fantastic job by bringing lay man who had acting skills but it did not make me a star. The show was more focused on the branding of the product to sell it and our careers weren’t the focus. After the show finished, the organisers gave us a Telefilm and a film which was directed by Syed Noor. That film, 'Pride of Honor', never released because no one followed up for its release or ever worked on post-production. After winning the show and completing a film with Syed Noor, people had forgotten me. I had to go to every production house and remind them that who I am, what show I had won. Humayun Saeed was the first person who offered me 'Mehmoodabad ki Malkayen' and that was my breakthrough in the industry. Thankfully, Faysal Qureshi remembered me and he played a huge role as a mentor and guided me through. I was actually re-born as a star

Are you planning to play a villain in any film or drama?

I have already played villain in film Raasta but recently I'm offered a drama in which I am playing a negative character which has two variations; a complete evil from the inside and an innocent husband in front of his wife.

You must have faced many problems because of your straight-forward personality?

All the time. Many directors and production houses clearly said they will not work with me because I have always been speaking the truth. I don't butter people and who I don't like I will say it. People don't remember you by your work but how much you socialize with them or butter them. If people were

We never saw that show after 3 seasons.

When they achieved their target market through using us as puppets so they halted the production. People don't remember me as the winner of Hero Bannay Ki Tarang. I made my own status as an actor. It is a pity how the whole show feels like a bully today and all hard work to win the show just went down the drain.

You have not mentioned Syed Noor since he was one of the judges and a big name in the industry? Any reason.

Syed Noor is a biased person and he will only work with the boy he likes. I will never forget that how Syed Noor bullied and degraded me during the show so that I somehow surrender and back off so his favourite contestant could win the show whereas Faysal Qureshi and Ma’am Resham supported me. They saw an actor inside me. Winning the show was not easy.

How had it been after the first drama you did?

By the grace of ALLAH, I have never seen a down fall and every year I am working in different projects. I prefer working with a good team and people especially with seniors like Mehmood Aslam, Faysal Qureshi, Aijaz Aslam and Nabeel Zafar. I have done roles as a lead, second lead, supporting, villain and hero. I have not made this an issue of my ego that I will only work as

OTT has changed the game. It has now become a medium where new talent can have theri fair share also. On Netflix and amazon there are all new faces but what keeps the audience intact is the strong story and plot. Our drama industry is the strongest industry in the world and we can do wonders, but only when we realise our strengths.

You tested positive for COVID-19? How did people react and how you handled the backlash.

More than backlash, the videos I made for COVID-19 helped hundreds of people and they had hope of recovering after watching my videos. I donated my plasma after recovering from COVID-19 and sent a message across that one can help other after recovering and this is high time we have to help each other. There are 4 to 5 people on the internet with the names of 'Papa ki princess', 'Warrior Khan' etc. who would start backlash and finish when one doesn't respond to their crap.

I am a perfectionist; I can’t start something and be a headless chicken in the middle of the way. If I start something I will do a complete research and then move on. Right now, I am acting so that is my focus so I can’t put my feet in two boats. But one thing is clear that I'm not going to start anything in the industry like a production house or something but outside the industry.

There is a video in which you are scolding Adi in Faysal Qureshi's show and saying you will slap him? What was that?

First of all, Adi and I are very good friends. Yes, I gave him a shut-up call because he crossed his limits which I do not tolerate who so ever does that.

Have you ever been a victim of payment issues in the production houses?

There are two types of production houses; one who pay on time and the other who doesn't pay on time – that means they never pay. With me, I don't let my money go easily. I leave the work in the middle of a serial if I am not paid.

What did he say that made you angry?

I went to Faysal Qureshi's show for my then serial’s promotion. Adi sometimes forgets that the cameras record what people are saying and this is what happened. He said Naveed Raza is the only actor who you can call anytime and he will come to your show. He said it sarcastically. Faysal Quraishi is like a brother to me and I will go anytime he will call me on his show. But that does not mean that I am sitting free. He was also telling pay grades of actors which were ethically wrong.

What you have to say to your fans?

The country is going through a tough time now which is a challenge so we have to be united, not on the basis of a religion or ethnicity but as humans. Help others and make ways for people instead of becoming a hurdle in their way.

You have also been trolled for what you said about Qandeel Baloch?

As an actor what do you think doesn't fit your personality.

I was offered Baaghi and I had refused to play the character. It was something like as If I am offered Shakti Kapoor's biopic so I will not do that because

I am over observant and that I think should be less in my personality.

An ace writer has always been in the news for making great dramas, but also for his regressive statements about film and drama actresses. In the era where the world is talking about women's empowerment and rights, Khalil Ur Rahman Qamar often faces heat for his unpleasant statements. Recently, the Mere Pass Tum Ho director issued a statement about Mahira Khan when the actress shared some nostalgic pictures from her drama Sadqay Tumahre. Taking the screenshot of Mahira’s Instagram post, Khalil Ur Rahman Qamar shared it on his Twitter account with the caption “I'll always curse on me for the sin I committed by casting her in a very sacred role in my Sadqay Tumhare.” Not only that he explained his hatred towards the actress by re-sharing an old tweet of Mahira in which she bashed him for abusing Marvi Sarmad, a human right activist, live on TV. He further said that he has no respect for Mahira since that day.

Both blazing guns and murder in their eyes, the actress appears the epitome of power as they set out to avenge the deaths of their beloved in the past. It is clear that love is considered a forbidden crime in both families. From the looks of the promos; it is evident that the cunning female leaders leave no stone unturned to unleash wrath upon each other. From poison to swords; they are ready to use all to achieve the downfall of the enemy. However, their young generation is becoming a pawn in the battle. We see a blazing Rose Muhammad setting a trap to ensnare a dandy-looking Hadi while a poised Hassan Niazi has his love game ready to lure a stunning Sabeeka Imam. It’s a mystery about which actor is exactly essaying what role and belongs to which tribe. For that, we are ready to switch on to PTV or surf the intriguing drama on YouTube.

By Ghazala Sulaiman It appears as a comingof-age saga that will hook millennials and Gen Z with its striking story. The millennials and Gen Z drama buffs have been blessed with television gems like Alif, Udaari, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Dastaan, Jackson Heights and so many more. But none of those stories could match the glorious entertainment of the yore when PTV was all the industry had.

It was the unforgettable golden age of Pakistan television that shaped the dramas of today. While the tales of the past were mostly low-budget projects, they boasted stories that had value and kept the whole country glued to their T.V sets. How much we have heard from our elders about the evergreen Dhoop Kinary, the forever memorable Alpha Bravo Charlie, the witty Ankahi, the gripping Tanhyaaiyan, the king of all comedy shows ’50-50’, and the ultimate game show ‘The Tariq Aziz’ show. The channel and its projects proudly became the breeding ground for the crème de la crème of actors, writers, and directors we take inspiration from today.

A revival on the way?

Unfortunately, PTV lost its soul with the influx of various channels back in 2000. Initially, a private channel was launched and it ended PTV’s supremacy forever. However today, hundreds of channels combined have

not been able to give us the treasure trove of entertainment that PTV still possesses. Nevertheless, we continuously see a ray of hope for PTV’s revival. From Turkish dramas to those of ISPR, we often see attempts to attract audiences towards the national channel. The much recently launched ‘Dushman’ is one of the projects that signifies a much-awaited comeback of contemporary Pakistani dramas on PTV. Those who have seen its teasers will know that it appears as a coming-of-age saga that will hook millennials and Gen Z with its striking story. Starring veterans like Saman Ansari, Nadia Afghan, the late Naila Jaffery, Ayub Khosa along with a fresh cast of Rose Mohammed, Sabeeka Imam, Hadi Bin Arshad, and Hassan Niazi. The masterminds behind the drama are director Abdullah Badini and writer Ali Moeen.

A love-hate sage between families

Shot in exotic locations, Dushman appears to be a tale of two vengeful families with centuries-old rivalries. What is the most interesting part of the teasers is that it shows women in power with Saman Ansari as the silver-haired leader ‘Mai Lali’ of her tribe along with the fierce Nadia Afghan as ‘Malkani Bibi’- the head of the rival family. Women empowerment is definitely a trendy narrative PTV needs to propagate to attract drama aficionados.

The much recently launched ‘Dushman’ is one of the projects that signifies a muchawaited comeback of contemporary Pakistani dramas on PTV Dushman’s script-writing too seems robust with its enigmatic dialogues. We see multiple locations being used in the teaser and we are counting on the aesthetic cinematography that will make the drama looks brilliant on our screens.

The presence of Naila Jaffery

A very special part of Dushman appears to be the presence of the late Naila Jaffery in the cast. This was a drama she was working on while she was battling cancer. A strong warrior she has been with the deadly disease, we see her bald in the drama- signifying that it must be a harsh time she was surely undergoing her treatment. It warmed our hearts to witness her in an avatar after ages, something that the industry will cherish and relish after her illfated demise. It is so uncanny that she began her career with Family 93 on PTV and her last drama too will be aired on the channel she kickstarted her journey with. We have our hopes high for this project! Will it meet the expectations and truly become the stepping stone of PTV’s eventual revival on our screens? Let’s wait and watch.

Celebrate the annual Star Wars Day by knowing what really happened in a galaxy far, far away! By Omair Alavi KARACHI

Every year Star Wars fans celebrate May the 4th as Star Wars Day; that originated from the pun "May the Fourth be with you", and this year it was celebrated for the 45th time. The best way to celebrate the day is to either watch the Star Wars saga, or read about it, but when you have the ‘The Ultimate Star Wars Collection’ in your sight, it becomes your first priority. This Ultimate Collection contains not one or two but as many as three Ultimate Star Wars Books plus a Giant Poster and Stickers. In short, it is the perfect gift for a Star Wars geek or someone who wants to explore the Star Wars universe without moving away from their couch. Not only do these books explore the rise and fall of Darth Vader but also how he was able to atone for his crimes, that too in front of his ‘lost’ son at the end of the original saga. The most important book in this ‘saga’ is ‘The Imperial Era’ which traces the evolution of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader, and how his rise from a slave to the master villain is a lesson for everyone who believes they can achieve anything. This book contains all the grim details of the Empire's deadly grip on the galaxy as well as what made the young Skywalker change sides, and how did it affect his own life. And if you didn't know that before Luke Skywalker, Anakin was the one who was trained by Yoda and ObiWan Kenobi, then you need to read this book without further delay, for it discusses everything you need to know. The first three Star Wars films – Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith – introduce the characters that went on to become integral in the Star Wars original’ trilogy. Unlike the films, where Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi came out first, and the prequels came later, this book begins with the prequels and then movies towards the ‘original’ trilogy, so that new readers can relate to the six films easily. Every film from the first two trilogies – not counting the ones featuring Ray, Finn, and Kylo Ren – gets a special mention here, making it worth your collection. From the thrilling schemes, double-crossing, surprise attacks, breathtaking escapes, and seemingly impossible rescues, every act is covered in The Imperial Saga. Even the changes between the film’s original release and the remastered version, memorable bloopers, and behind the scenes facts are added here to impress the readers who either weren’t born when the first three ‘episodes’ were screened or had no clue how difficult it was to add special effect back in the day. The next book – or the one you need to read in this collection is – Characters, Creatures, Behind the PA K I S TA N ’ S N U M B E R 1 N E W S PA P E R

Scenes which is a mini encyclopedia featuring the characters and creatures that made Star Wars successful. Not only does it cover the first six ‘episodes’ but also the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels that serve as the missing link between the prequels and the sequels. You can meet both the good Jedi and the bad Sith in these pages, discover what made them heroes and what propelled them towards evil, which creatures or droids served who and how were they brought to life, be it using technology or craftsmanship. Every major character gets major space here, in chronological order, while the minor ones obviously have to settle for less space. That doesn’t mean they aren’t considered important; it means that the major ones are given more importance. And then there is the science – the Behind the Scenes feature in the second book makes you want to watch Star Wars again because it tells you that most of the fascinating action that you witnessed in the first six films actually took place in the studio, featured either trained animals or puppets and didn’t take place in a galaxy far, far away. The third and last book in this collection – Locations, Technology, Vehicles – is more for geeks than Star Wars fans. Here, every weapon used in the Star Wars films, every vehicle the characters used to travel, and every ‘fictional’ location that was first given a name and later became eternal is mentioned and discussed. All the planets, palaces, and technology that are now known as part of the famed Star Wars franchise were once unknown; this book tells the readers what made them become part of folklore and how. From Lars Moisture Farm to Jabba’s Palace, from double-bladed lightsaber to Han Solo’s modified DK-44 heavy blaster pistol, every place and weapon is discussed here in detail so that the readers know what they either missed (if they had already watched the films) or what they would have to look out for (when they watch the films!). And then there were the vehicles that made Star Wars stand out at a time when even air travel was evolving on our planet. From Boba Fett’s Slave I, Luke Skywalker’s Red Five, or Han Solo’s (and Chewbacca’s) Millennium Falcon, every vehicle gets its due in this book that also talks about the ‘supporting vehicles’ as well. Although one look at the vehicles would make you realize whether it belongs to the Republic (the good guys) or the Empire (the bad ones), it’s always fun to read about such things in detail. Add to that the giant poster and a handful of stickers and you have everything to celebrate Star Wars Day in style. Even ardent fans of the franchise would get to know a lot of things that they might not have known or not been sure about through this Ultimate Collection, making it worth your dime. ‘May the Fourth be with you!' Many actors in Pakistan have tried their hand in politics, some have failed, some haven’t Syed Kamal

Film actor Syed Kamal was amongst the top-rated stars in the country in the 1960s and the 1970s. With the arrival of younger men on the block, his romantic days were as good as over even though he continued to play the leading man well into the 1980s. However, it was during the 1985 General Elections that Syed Kamal opted to contest the non-party elections for the first time, and failed to win. He didn’t stop here and contested in the next handful of elections as an independent candidate, before joining MQM in the latter part of his career. Politics may not have helped him but in 1986, Syed Kamal made Siyasat a film on his political experience which was hailed for its closer-to-reality depiction of the political scenario in the country.

Tariq Aziz

He wasn’t just Pakistan Television’s first announcer, but Tariq Aziz was amongst the first film actors to ‘politicize’ themselves while they were busy as actors. He worked in a couple of films in the 1970s highlighting the plight of the laborers in the country, something that brought him closer to the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. After General Zia ul Haq deposed Bhutto to become the President, Tariq Aziz joined his regime, and it was during those years that his Neelam Ghar went on to become one of the most popular programs in the country. After Nawaz Sharif emerged as one of the two prime leaders in the country, Tariq Aziz joined Pakistan Muslim League and even became a Member of the National Assembly, but his political career suffered once General Pervez Musharraf removed Nawaz Sharif as the Prime Minister. Although Tariq Aziz did try to make a comeback to the political scenario by joining Pakistan Muslim League (Q), he was mostly kept on the sidelines.

Abrar ul Haq

And then there is Abrar ul Haq, the famous singer from the 1990s who gave countless hits like Billo, Preeto, Nach Majajan, and December to his fans. Contrary to popular belief, he hasn’t won an Election but contested in two on PTI’s ticket. He did try to use his popularity to win the General Elections but both times – in 2013 and 2018 – he lost to Pakistan Muslim League’s Ahsan Iqbal. Like his fierce competitor Jawad Ahmed, Abrar vows to return next year and earn respectability as a politician.

By Omair Alavi Some people are surprised that renowned TV channels openly support their favorite political parties; if one channel is inclined toward Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, then other acts as the mouthpiece of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). The same is the case with showbiz stars who have been openly supporting and/or criticizing the new government ever since it took over. If you think that’s something new, then you need to brush up your skills as a history student, for politics and show business have been together, forever. Be it former President Asif Ali Zardari’s cameo appearance in Waheed Murad’s Salgirah in the 1960s or acting gigs of PPP leaders Fouzia Wahab and Sharmila Faruqi in – Kohr and Panchwan Mausam during the 1990s, things have always been interchangeable between the two fields. Let’s take a look at some of the noted showbiz stars who have tried their hand at politics, and diversified their resume by either failing or passing.

Aamir Liaquat

Sajid Hasan

The veteran actor has been around as an actor, writer, director, and host for nearly 40 years; not many know he began his career as a journalist and was associated with leading newspapers and magazines in the 1980s and 1990s. Going into politics was inevitable, since his early days as a journalist, he had an opinion about everything from sports to politics. The multitalented artist first became an active member of the Pakistan People's Party and then contested the General Elections for the Sindh Assembly. Like his fellow actors Shafi Mohammad, Qaiser Khan Nizamani, and Ayub Khosa, Sajid Hasan failed to win the seat but managed to show his community that even if you are a successful actor, you can still serve the country as a politician.

Although he was a late entrant to the showbiz scene, Aamir Liaquat made a name for himself as a religious scholar and a TV host in no time. He used his popularity to his advantage twice – once by getting elected for the National Assembly as an MNA on MQM’s ticket in 2002 and once on PTI’s ticket in 2018. Although he has now left PTI, he is still an MNA and continues to roam around, hoping some party will take him in and use his popularity for their political gain. Abbas Jafri: Leading fashion model Abbas Jafri has been ruling the fashion industry since 2011 and is known as one of the top models in the country. However, the 30-year-old surprised all by contesting for a seat in the Sindh Assembly in 2018 and winning the General Elections on PTI’s ticket. He can easily be termed as the most handsome person in the Sindh Assembly, and it would be great if some of his colleagues could also join politics, and make Sindh Assembly pleasing to the eyes.

By Isra Shams Sanjay Leela Bhansali is recognised for creating huge worlds for his films, some of which are based on true events and transport the viewer to their own extremely detailed world. Bhansali applies the same sensibilities to Gangubai Kathiawadi, a storey situated firmly in the real world, in recent history. Gangubai follows Alia Bhatt's character, the titular Mafia queen, as she rises through the world of prostitution in 1960s Kamathipura, a small Mumbai neighbourhood.

Kanwal Nauman

After retirement from films and TV, leading actress Kanwal Nauman joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) in 2008 and was elected on a reserved seat for women in 2013. Although she was part of the ruling party, her health didn’t allow her to be active, and she chose to quit politics in 2018. Her fans are hoping that the versatile actress will soon make a return to either politics or showbiz so that they can see her in action, once again. And then there were celebrities who couldn’t win General Elections despite being quite popular. One of them is famous film actress Musarrat Shaheen who was part of Urdu and Pushto films during the 1980s and the 1990s, while the other one was TV actress Gul e Rana. While Musarrat Shaheen formed her own party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Masawat to contest elections mostly against Moulana Fazlur Rehman, Gul e Rana tried her hand at politics on PPP’s ticket in 2018 and couldn't succeed.

Faced with a variety of obstacles, Gangubai went on to advocate for women's rights in her community, holding political rallies and other events to support sex workers. Alia Bhatt has performed admirably in the character of Gangubai, which may be one of her most vulnerable roles to date. Despite this, I rarely saw her lose herself in the character she's supposed to be portraying, particularly in Gangu's latter years when she's supposed to have a tougher demeanour. It reminded me that, while our business has brilliant performers, they rarely blend into the parts they're supposed to play due to a lack of commitment on the part of various departments, whether it's makeup or something else. While Alia is the star of the show, Ajay Devgan's guest appearance as Rahim Lala, whose short screen time is used brilliantly in providing counsel to a young Gangu in her early years, deserves special notice. Going into the film blind, I was surprised to see Vijay Raaz and Jim Sarbh fill out the cast, with Shantanu Maheshwari making his feature debut in a restrained but endearing role. Raaz only appears occasionally, at first as a counterpoint to Gangu's ambitions to unite the entire neighbourhood, but that conflict is resolved so quickly that it feels like filler at the end. The rest of the cast is given enough

screen time. Given Bhansali's directing, I wasn't shocked to see nearly every frame treated with the same care and attention as those on a "larger scale," which typically consists of song sequences. Aside from the typical attention to detail in clothing and sets, Bhansali also lets the camera move freely with the music, which is in stark contrast to the first half of the film, which focuses on Ganga's claustrophobia. Even though the Kamathipura neighbourhood is small, the filmmakers manage to create a convincing universe within its streets over the period of 154 minutes. The film focuses primarily on telling its storey for a broader worldwide audience, thus there isn't much nostalgia for 1960s Mumbai. While the film is full of strong moments, there are a few that come across as a little too pandering, with scenes that don't have Gangu directly staring at the camera while giving her comments. But that's just me being picky; the remainder of the picture is well-made. While I understand that recording the life and works of the eponymous Gangu is a difficult undertaking, the film feels longer than it needs to be, with the weight of its runtime hitting hard on viewers at the mid-point, making the film feel a little aimless. Overall, Gangubai Kathiawadi is precisely what you'd anticipate – even if it's a "smaller" picture in size, Bhansali manages to deliver on every level.

An exceptional, vibrant and talented singer that we have the town talking about is Haider Mustehsan, renowned as HYDR

By Bold Desk KARACHI

He has many popular songs to his credit, but his recent song ‘Safarish’ is a breath of fresh air which is getting rave reviews from the listeners. As we are also lovesick with his new song, we thought to sit down with the artist to dive deeper to know about the creative process of not only this song but his overall thought process. In this exclusive interview, the singer talks about his inspiration, relationship with his sister Momina Mustehsan, future projects and much more.

Tell us about your latest release, the thought process behind it?

This track is basically about a conflict between reality and imagined reality. I think most people want their perception of people they love to be the absolute truth. But sometimes, the moments and feelings a person’s heart hold dears, aren’t always understood in the same intensity by the person they love. That’s when there is a conflict between your rational senses and your persistent heart. Safarish is a request from the heart to the mind, to give love another chance.

What/who inspired you to get into music?

Music is always been a part of my life‘s journey. I think the inspiration came from the diversity of Sound that I was introduced to when I was younger. Music fascinated me in a way that I was intrigued by the variety of emotions that can invoke. As I grew older I found music to be the refuge I went to when I needed to clear my mind or express my emotions.

How have people taken you as a singer?

Good feedback helps you thrive, what’s the feedback to your music been like so far? I think I’ve come a long way from where I started. And I still have many ways to go. But I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by musical minds and ears that have always taken a sharp and productive critique on my music. My music is for everyone everywhere I do not like to set a certain demographic to which caters caters to. I am humbled

to see a core audience develop, that are intrigued by the blend of cultures and sounds that my music brings.

Your sister catapulted to fame with Coke Studio, did you, at any point feel over-shadowed by her?

I’ve always felt empowered by my sister. Empowered in a way that I look up to her for her courage and her passion. To have accomplished what she has and still continues to accomplish I think is exemplary and empowering for other females and female musicians.

When can we expect a collaboration between you and your sister?

It’s already done. We will release it when the time is right.

The genre of music you do is very different than what Momina usually opts for, was it a conscious decision to do this particular genre? Or is it just that you lean naturally towards this genre?

My sister and I both grew up and had our own experiences that we faced in life. Her musical ear and journey are different than mine. Our musical palate and taste developed separately. That isn’t to say that I don’t like that genre or she doesn’t like my genre. However we both are not set to our particular genre, we both can easily crossover into each other’s style. It’s just our preference.

The Mustehsans are known for their good looks and soulful vocals, would you want to venture into acting if you get a chance?

I would definitely consider acting. I’ve always thought that I would be a good actor. Hahaha. In fact I’ve actually been offered two or three scripts but unfortunately had to turn them down. Just have to wait and find the right script and production.

What are you working on currently? What’s next in the pipeline?

Currently we are working on a bunch of stuff. My EP is finished and a number of single tracks are in the making. Keep on

the lookout for another HYDR x PDNY (Pardeep) collaboration as well.

to name a few: The Weeknd, Masego, J.Cole and Brent Faiyaz

People often refer to you as the Pakistani Zayn Malik, was he at some point, an inspiration?

What do you think about the music industry and where it’s at right now?

Well I know that comparison is wellintentioned and I’m a huge fan of Zayn Malik, but I think comparing any artist that is serious about his craft to another without acknowledging the artist’s uniqueness is doing him a disservice. But I’m always happy to hear it since Zayn is a phenomenal vocalist and personality.

Your favourite musicians currently?

I don’t have any particular favourites since I consume a variety of music. But

I think the industry is on its way to a full and complete revival of fresh and talented young artists. I think the sound of this industry is changing for the good and is blending its elements for the better. Shout out to all the artists coming up with genuine and true music.

Anything you’d want to change about the industry?

I think the problem in this industry is the same with any other industry that has to do with entertainment. I tend to always

Shimmery makeup – for the must-click sun-kissed selfie

If you’re lucky to have the sun make a special appearance for you on Eid day, grab this opportunity like no other and go for a sunkissed selfie. And what goes well with a sunkissed selfie than light dewy, shimmery makeup? For this makeup look, we take inspiration from Saba Qamar in this jaw-dropping lehenga. Matching the vibe with her bedizened outfit, her makeup look is shimmery with a feathered touch. To get this look, go for foil frenzy lids, and add shimmery tones. Use a soft highlighter for the high points of your face, and tie it all together with a shimmery gloss.

By Isra Shams The year 2022 has come and the trends have changed. We’re sure you have got your outfits planned out from the hem on your kurta, to the colour of your heels. Now that the rest of your prep is done, we are here to help you figure out what makeup look will match your mood for 2022. Whether your day is filled with biryani hogging or an extensive selfie session, we have a makeup look to match all your needs.

Add some spice from our dazzling beauties

For this very important research, we are naturally going to comb through the prized archives of our favourite drama beauties and take inspiration from the stunning makeup that have embellished their traditional looks. From Saba Qamar to Iqra Aziz, our makeup records reflect only the best of the best makeup looks. So if you’re running low on makeup inspo for this festive season, get ready to take some notes.

Glam goth – for your love of intensity

Now if you are one of those people who cannot get enough of their black or dark-hued outfits (no matter what time or season), we are here to (not convince you to go rainbow), but to help you rock that rebel-chic look like no other. For this look, we take inspiration from none other than Ayeza Khan. The intense eye makeup in this look highlights her outfit’s intensity without killing the overall vibe. To get this look, start with frosty eyelids, and go crazy with a creamy kajal. Line some on your upper lid and smudge it for a blended look. Line your waterline intensely with the same kajal and apply mascara. To complete the look, go for a deep blush-toned matte lipstick.

Blood red lips – for a bold moment

This one is for our girls who like to shine through from across the room – with their outfits, and their bags, and their makeup, this one is for you. Our advice to you is to – do your thang! If being extra is your mood, then go with it. For this makeup look, we take inspiration from none other than Mahira Khan in this beautiful black embellishment. Contrary to what one might think, bold red lip colour can never go wrong even with a light or dull-hued outfit. It can actually help you bring overall balance to your look. Your best bet with a bold lip would be to tone down the rest of your makeup, especially the eyes. A subtle eye and cheek makeup will harmonize with your bold lip. To get the perfect red lips to look, lightly exfoliate your lips and leave them moisturise with a lip balm before you start your makeup. By the time you have to apply your lipstick, your lips are ready for a smooth overlining and lipstick application. Voila! You have a perfect pout.

A matching match – for when your outfit is a whole mood

Do you have those phases when you are completely obsessed with a colour and it follows to your wardrobe, makeup, stationery, and even the kitchen sometimes? Well, if you are in that phase (or just want to match your makeup with your outfit, duh), this matching makeup look is for you. For this makeup look, we have taken inspiration from Urwa Hocane in this stunning outfit and matching eyelids. While she is giving us major inspo, this look also tells us that matching your outfit with your makeup looks best when limited to eye makeup (furiously taking notes). To get this look, grab on to an eyeshadow palette that matches your outfit and pop that colour onto your lids. Finish the look with nude lips. This will help draw all the attention to the colour on your eyes.

Natural nude – for your biryani hogging mood

Yes, we know, this is what you have been waiting for – a makeup look perfect for a day filled with delicacies and snacks. If this is your mood, you need something that stays on through biryani and zarda. For this makeup mood, we have taken inspiration from Sarah Falak in this blue dress. To get this makeup look, go for a matte foundation and concealer base. Set it with a powder. Line your waterline with a waterproof kajal, and go with a waterproof mascara too (in case you eat anything spicy and start to tear up, your makeup will have your back). Finish the look with matte, nude lipstick. Even if some of your nude lipstick wears off, you will have enough time for a touch-up before anybody notices.

Blush babe – for a naturally flushed look

Festivities or not, we are in love with this makeup trend for a while now. Suitable for traditional and western wear, heavily blushed cheeks are one of the easiest makeup looks to ace. For this makeup look, we take inspiration from Minal Khan. This minimum effort makeup look makes your cheeks look naturally flushed and if applied correctly, can give your face a lifted effect. To get this look, try a watery tint or a creamy blush. These textures deliver a natural finish.

Smokey eye & nude lip combo – for when you’re in two minds

If you tell us that you have five makeup looks shortlisted for Eid, and can’t decide on one, we won’t blame you, for we completely understand. One can only hope to look dewy, but also have a bold moment, but not want to clash makeup elements, but also want to look effortless. Trust us, we get it. For this mood, we have taken inspiration from Iqra Aziz, in this sexy selfie post. She has gone with a classic combo of smokey eyes and a nude lip. This makeup look can help you be dramatic, and then not-so-dramatic in one makeup look, without it clashing. It also draws attention to your beautiful eyes and adds drama for an intense effect. To get this look, grab on to your smokey eyeshadow palette and start blending a deep brown in the crease of your eye. Pack some black pigment on your brush and start blending from the outer corner of your eye, towards the centre of your lid. Now if you’re a trained craftsman, you probably won’t need this trick, but if you aren’t, you can use a Q-tip to give your smokey eyeshadow a defined, cat eye (-ish) shape. Finish off the look with a nude lip, and a seamless highlight glow.

Subtle glam – for when you are not in the mood

Ideally, if you’re not in the mood to put on makeup, you should definitely go with your beautiful, bare face. However, if you do like the idea of looking makeup ready but are only up for the minimal effort, soft glam is your best friend. We take inspiration from Maya Ali on this Instagram post. You can even go to town with a bare face (with moisturizer and sunscreen, obv) with this look. Use a dewy finish primer (or foundation/BB cream/CC cream). Put some blush and your fav eyeshadow on. You can also skip eyeshadow and just go with a kajal and liner, with a lipstick of your choice. To make this makeup look a bit more glam, we suggest you opt for a liquid highlighter. It will give your makeup look an oomph effect with minimum effort.

How to lose weight & keep it off permanently?

By Zehra Batool

will also improve your cholesterol and save you from chronic diseases.

KARACHI

Despite the abundance of information on the internet, a lot of it is poor weight loss advice. If you wish to permanently lose weight, you should always avoid fad diets and hacks. To reach and maintain a healthy weight, you must eat a nutritional, balanced diet, and keep in mind that there are no quick fixes when it comes to weight loss. Here are a few easy and healthy ways to shed pounds:

5. Do not skip breakfast

Skipping breakfast may seem like a good way to lose those extra pounds, but in reality, you could gain it instead. Breakfast, being the first meal of the day, boosts your metabolism (how your body breaks down food to use as energy). So, when you skip it, your metabolism slows down. You definitely do not want to miss on those vital nutrients because you may end up snacking incessantly throughout the day. Of course, you will feel hungrier without breakfast! You should consume foods that are high in protein for breakfast. We have already discussed how protein helps you feel full, so start putting it into practice.

1. Add protein to your diet

As a rule of thumb, make sure you add protein to your diet every day. You have probably read and heard this a lot when looking for ways to lose weight, but we promise you that protein is your best friend if you truly intend to shed those extra pounds for good. Something as simple as eating eggs for breakfast (a high-protein breakfast) can have a large impact. Quite simply, a certain part of your brain actively regulates your weight. It determines when and how much you eat by processing different types of information. Without getting too deep into the science, let's just say that by replacing carbs and fat with protein, you lower your hunger and boost several satiety hormones. This is essentially how protein makes you eat fewer calories and lose weight.

6. Get a good night's sleep

Another thing that slows down metabolism is insufficient sleep. Subsequently, when metabolism is less effective, the body tends to store unused energy as fat. Sleep duration also affects how the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin work. Leptin signals to the brain that one is full. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night whether you are trying to lose weight or simply to stay healthy.

7. Do not get discouraged

2. Eat plenty of fiber

Many often overlook fiber as an important nutrient. When it comes to losing weight, another simple yet effective advice is to eat more fiber. It helps you feel full without having to add a lot of extra calories to your diet. Be smart with your calorie intake. Fiber is a carbohydrate found in plant foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The difference between it and other carbs is that it is not easily digested by your body, so it passes quickly through the system without rising your blood sugar. Experts

recommend that if you want to lose weight or stay at a healthy weight, you need 25 grams of fiber a day for women under 50 years old, and 38 grams for men, but some recommend more.

3. Cut back on refined carbohydrates

Cutting carbohydrates, especially refined or processed ones, helps shed pounds. The

body converts these carbs into sugars very rapidly. Refined carbs are heavily processed foods that no longer contain fiber or other nutrients. These include white rice, bread, and pasta. Limiting carbohydrate intake can be challenging but looking for alternatives can help. For instance, you can use whole-grain rice, bread, and pasta instead of the white versions, and fruit, nuts, and seeds instead

4. Avoid added sugar

Sugar can be hidden under many names in ingredient lists, making it difficult to determine how much sugar is actually in a product. In addition to contributing to your weight gain and poor health, added

sugar is a definite health threat. Focus on consuming natural sugars and cutting out added sugars. Natural sugars are found in vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. Meanwhile, foods high in added sugars include ice cream, cakes, cookies, breakfast cereals, soda, candy, and sweetened drinks. Cutting added sugar will ultimately lower your calorie intake as well as your body weight. In fact, it

It is important to keep in mind that weight fluctuations are totally normal, and not to get discouraged if the scale swings upwards a bit. Vacations, holidays, stressful situations, and of course, weight fluctuations are all a part of life. Identify what you are doing differently and get back on the bandwagon. Do not rush maintenance, it is a marathon, not a sprint; you are in this for the long haul! Last and most importantly, you can lose weight without doing a single pushup or burpee, but to keep the weight off permanently, you must do some physical activity. Brushing also helps distribute the natural oils produced in the skin, which otherwise collect at the base of the shaft. This is important because it prevents breakage, frizzing, and split ends. Pro-tip: When brushing, apply a few drops of beard oil as a booster, especially after a shower. It works wonders, trust me!

Know that beard dandruff is a real thing

Some of the biggest, most lustrous beards harbor a dark secret: beard dandruff. The skin beneath that impressive mane is often malnourished, starving for some attention (in the form of moisture). So, while the beard glistens, the dry skin beneath flecks and flakes. Beard dandruff is a real thing that can affect even the most veteran facial hair authorities.

Guys, yearning for a properly groomed beard - Here’s rule #1: The primary thing to know about growing a beard is that you have to actually grow that beard. You need the canvas to throw some paint at it, and you need to commit some real-time not shaving if you want a perfect beard. A great beard requires you to put in the effort to keep it looking its best. There are some essential rules to keep everything clean and coming in nicely, so I have rounded up some best beard growth tips to keep you going when growing your first beard. Or, perhaps this isn’t your very first time, but you want to make it your best beard. Or maybe this time you’re being realistic given your specific quantity and placement of whiskers on your mug. (if you’re dealing with beard dandruff, we’ve got you covered for that, too.) So let's get started; no matter your goal, check out these tips to have the best beard your DNA allows.

Here’s what you need to do to get rid of it:

• Exfoliate with a beard brush: Like I explained in the last tip • Choose the right cleanser: Beard care starts with the right products. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, look for a facial cleanser with salicylic acid or glycolic acid as an active ingredient.

Show some patience and set realistic goals

Remember, growing a beard is a lengthy process. You cannot turn Jason Momoa in a day; the best thing you can do is persist. First, know that you can try many different beard styles; you don’t need to stick to neatly uniform growth. (Consider how your beard can perfectly flatter your face shape) Your growth should be influenced by the style you desire. However, I emphasize “desire” for one reason: You can’t achieve your ideal beard if your facial hair isn’t destined to grow that way. If your beard is patchy or has a specific growth pattern (sparse on the cheeks, full on the goatee, for example), you’ve got to set your expectations appropriately. This goes for all beards, big, small,

and medium alike.

grow wild and free.

Get Started Only if you wish to continue it

Chop Chop as it Grows

One of the main things of beard maintenance is to keep it defined. In short: you need to shave the neckline and clean cheek lines. These keep it more beard-like and less neckbeard-like unless, a woolly stoner beard is your aim. If that’s the case, let it

The ideal way to keep things looking intentional is to trim your beard as it grows. It might feel counterproductive, but it’s the same way you need to get haircuts while growing out your hair. This helps direct the hair where it needs to be: Fuller in some spots, less in others. The styling

products can help influence things, but you foremost want to keep hairs in check as needed: This can mean spot-checking strays, chopping split ends, or simply taking out some bulk. You'll want a trimmer or a sharp pair of scissors for this.

Brush it Out Every Day

Beard brushes help exfoliate the skin beneath the beard, lift dead skin cells, and prevent future

For people with normal skin, you should also choose a non-comedogenic cleanser. You can look for active ingredients that treat or prevent acne if you’re experiencing any specific issues with your skin. And lastly, for dry skin, look for a hydrating cleanser free from fragrances. So look for labels that say "soap-free" and "fragrance-free" to avoid all sorts of skin irritation. • Add some nourishing products to your routine: Consider picking up some beard products if you’re serious about maintenance. A few drops of beard oil will absorb quickly and give your hair the proper nutrients (plus a pinch of shine), making them more tameable. You can also go for beard balm or cream to keep it in place all day.

Go - Get Started

Well, whether you’re in the process of growing your beard or are already the proud owner of a fully grown beard, beard care is an integral part of personal grooming. Treat it as your baby, and you will love maintaining it!

Exhibiting pleasant table manners Got an invite for a formal lunch at CEO's place? Here are some tips to help you build an everlasting impression

Cut food as you eat and chew slowly

Oftentimes, people cut the entire steak (into smaller pieces) before eating. Remember that food is cut only for children. As adults, we slice off bites as we eat. If you’re eating a huge cheese sandwich or a burger, cut a small bite of it using a knife and fork, as it would be easier to eat and the sandwich won’t spill. Some people tend to chew loudly, spilling food crumbs and saliva as they chew. This is considered downright bad manners. Take small bites, close your mouth and chew the food slowly, without any noise, at least 32 times. Don’t use silverware to smash your food. Also, never use fingers to pick the last bites off the plate. Use a knife or a fork to finish the last bites.

By Mariam Naeem Khan Chomp … chomp … chomp. You are trying to enjoy a scrumptious meal and your friend or colleague is making annoying chewing sounds – already losing appetite? We bet. Slurp... slurp.... slurpppp... each time your companion takes a sip of his/her drink – they slurp. Irritating, right? Click...click...click... Looks like your companion is more interested in text messaging than you. You’re embarrassed, right? We say, it’s downright rude. These are some everyday scenes we see at restaurants. It seems like we have lost some basic table manners. Our young generation prefers comfort over grace. Dining, clothing and social etiquettes are no longer taught at schools, colleges and universities; therefore, all savoir faire has disappeared. Nevertheless, it’s never too late to learn appropriate table etiquette, after all it shows your refinement and el-

Drinking beverages

At a dinner engagement, you’ll most likely be presented with some cold beverage. When offered a bottled or canned beverage, always ask for a glass. Never drink out of a bottle directly. Also, for ladies, it’s advisable to use a straw because lipstick stains on a glass look vulgar. Otherwise, before taking a sip from the glass, dab your lips with a tissue paper or napkin to remove excess lipstick or oil from food so there’s no mark left on the glass.

egance. Some even take it a sign of character. Here are some basic table manners you should remember at every gathering, formal or informal.

Turn your cell phones off:

Compliment the host

When you enter someone else’s home or meet them for lunch/dinner at dine-in, please turn your phones off. If that’s not possible then either put them on silent mode or vibration. It looks quite rude when you are constantly engaged on WhatsApp, or if your phone keeps ringing while your host is trying to make a conversation with you.

Follow your host’s que

Don’t immediately sit anywhere at the dining table. Wait for your host to show you your seat or observe their gestures for they might have planned a specific seating arrangement. Sit up straight, look attentive and smile slightly. Slouching, leaning on elbows and sitting crossed-legged are all bad manners. Ladies must sit up straight with knees and legs together and heels slightly tilted to the rear or ankles crossed. Females must never sit with their legs apart. Spread the napkin on your lap and rest your hands on the lap till the meal begins officially. Also, remember to never pick anything directly from the serving dish.

Serving the food

Usually, the food is served in bowls or platters at dinner parties and in restaurants. Don’t reach out to any dish

It’s always polite to congratulate your host on arranging a wonderful meal. Appreciate the food they’ve prepared for you, or the restaurant they’ve selected. It’s best to show appreciation after taking a bite or two so you don’t come across as overenthusiastic or too cold. If there’s more than one dish, try all one after the other. Use different plates, if possible, otherwise use clean sides of the same plate. from your seat, or nudge others to pass you the platters. Your host will start passing the dish from left to right. When it’s your turn, serve yourself and pass it on to your neighbour on the right. Always use serving utensils, never the silverware that’s on your plate, and don’t pile up food on your plate. Always, take a small helping; you can always have another one later. Never extend your arms to grab a dish on the table. Instead, ask for it. Remember, salt and pepper are always passed together, and taste food before adding salt.

Time to eat your food

No matter how delicious the steak looks on your plate, don’t dig into it. Wait for your host to begin and then start eating. There are two styles of eating with silver-

ware: American and Continental. In American style, hold the fork in right hand and begin eating. If you need to use the knife, transfer the fork to your left hand, use the knife with the right and then put it on one side of the plate. Use fork with the right hand again. This is also called the zigzag method. In Continental style, hold the knife in right hand and fork in the left. Practice whichever style you are most comfortable adopting.

Elbows off the table and chew slowly

The general rule is: elbows should be off the table. Rest your wrists only on the table while eating or taking a break during the meal. In American style, rest the left hand on your lap; don’t hold water glass or drinks with it. Instead, put the silverware down, finish the bite, and then sip water.

Don't be gross

If something gets stuck in your teeth, do not use your fingers to take it out. Some people hold their hands over mouth when using a toothpick while they are still seated on the dining table. The worst part is, they clean the toothpick with the napkin – in front of everyone, which is bad manners. Excuse yourself and go to the restroom to do the task. While leaving the table, fold your napkin neatly and place it to the left of your plate. Also, push your chair back in politely and don’t stay away longer than 5 minutes. Dining with someone who has pleasant manners is an absolute pleasure. It shows one is a gentleman or a lady, and subtly teaches others a lesson in refinement.

Seinfeld: A sitcom that left big shoes to fill Zehra Batool KARACHI

Despite being a show about absolutely nothing, Seinfeld — the late 80s to mid-90s sitcom — really seems to have something that draws you in and keeps you glued to the screen. That's correct, a show about nothing. Having discovered the show three decades later, it is almost absurd that, when there is an abundance of other recent content grappling for my attention, I would turn to a 30-year-old sitcom to entertain and comfort me. It is simultaneously baffling how a show that is almost totally about nothing, but pure slapstick and minutiae of everyday life can be so beguiling and amusing. Seinfeld easily earned a reputation for being the ultimate nostalgic comedy comfort watch, much like Friends, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, That '70s Show, and Modern Family, at least for me. The sitcom, co-created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, follows New York City-based stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld (who plays a version of himself) and his humdrum misadventure with his self-absorbed friends including Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George Costanza (Jason Alexander), and Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) through their mundane misadventures. During its nine-season run, the series was nominated for 68 Emmys and won 10 of them. Throughout the series, Seinfeld included Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up routines at the beginning and end of every episode, but as of season 8, the show stopped including it altogether. His stand-up routines served to highlight the actor's real-life comedy roots, while also providing insights into the issues faced by the characters in the show. Given that Seinfeld was originally pitched as a series about how comedians find their material, this was a clever inclusion. Much of the series deals with benign annoyances and happenings, like misunderstandings, double-dipping, awkward dates, and, of course, soup. With the entire series now available on Netflix, a whole new generation gets to fall in love

with Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer. As a semi-fictionalized version of himself, Jerry portrays a New Yorkbased standup comic who gets into hilariously bizarre situations with his ex-girlfriend Elaine, neighbor Kramer, and best pal George. While his friends keep him entertained with their antics, Jerry often finds himself in the middle of

PA K I S TA N ’ S N U M B E R 1 N E W S PA P E R

some. The bulk of his storyline revolves around his many romantic relationships (which usually do not last very long) and his frivolous fixations. Elaine, who is a close friend as well as an ex-girlfriend of Jerry, frequently visits his apartment to vent, in quest of advice, and sometimes to grab a snack. She possesses a rather peculiar combi-

nation of straightforwardness, sensitivity, and ruthless sarcasm. Despite being one of the four key characters, the show does not introduce Elaine until the second episode. In nearly every episode, throughout the nine seasons, Elaine goes on different dates and continually ends up in unpredictable circumstances. One of the most iconic scenes in the series is

when Elaine shows off her horribly bad dancing skills to everyone's horror. Cosmo Kramer referred to as "Kramer" to Jerry, is Jerry's cherished and jumpy neighbor, known for his physical comedy and his wild entrances into his apartment. His cartoonish and fasttalking character will have you spit take more often than not. Kramer has an insa-

tiable thirst for the next best inventions. Be it a bra for men or a coffee table book about coffee tables, he jumps from one project to another. Kramer keeps himself occupied with these antics and some bizarre jobs, which include working at a bagel shop, becoming an underwear model, and working as the voice of Moviefone. On his adventures, he is often accompanied by Newman (Wayne Knight), Jerry's neighbor and archenemy. Interestingly, Larry David based Kramer's on his actual wacky neighbor. George Costanza is a childhood friend of Jerry, who lacks self-respect and is consumed by insecurity. Although he lives with his parents, Frank and Estelle, he always makes himself at home in Jerry's apartment, just like Elaine and Kramer. Aside from being perpetually green with envy, George endlessly becomes embroiled in convoluted and unfortunate circumstances owing to his incessant lies. He is perhaps the show's most loathsome yet compelling figure. Larry David based this character on his real-life friend, Michael Costanza. Unlike other sitcoms that have focused on important issues or even used traditional storytelling methods, Seinfeld did not just set a standard for a variety of new comedy tactics, but it also launched a wave of new ones. Jerry Seinfeld's observational humor influenced a wide range of other shows during his time, as well as many that emerged decades after his series ended. So much so that the concept of "single people in the great city" became the cornerstone of almost every other sitcom out there. In addition to being effective as a comedy, Seinfeld's impact extended beyond it. It was, possibly, the very first series to challenge the audience to identify their own worst traits reflected in the characters. The show achieved this by creating characters that were not only significantly engaging but also amusing. Sitcoms today continue to struggle to fill the big shoes left by Seinfeld. While it may seem odd seeing a 30-year-old show, in case this review fails to convince you to binge-watch it, let's just say you will be missing out on an incredibly wholesome and rib-tickling show.

Rehbra seems to be a fun-filled movie for the cine-goers that is staled to be released on June 24th, 2020.

Doctor Strange and casting confusion

Pakistan’s youngest social worker at work

By Muhammad Adil Marvel movies have been captivating audiences since the Iron Man franchise took off. They have nurtured an entire generation that has grown up watching these movies. Before the advent of the Marvel universe if you were a comic book or super hero fan your movie representation was few and far between. Mostly just within the realms of the odd Dark Knight movie or the many Spider Man’s. However, Marvel since then has had massive success projecting its entire universe in live action movie format. This has led to a very successful and lucrative movie franchise in Avengers. With characters that range from the Hulk to Hawkeye and expanding theres a character for everyone. One of the characters that really hit hard with fans as of 2016 has been Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Recently Disney has released the trailer for Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness. The trailer has run into some hot water which will be discussed below but also what you can look forward to in the movie.

powered magic wielding superhero? 2 over powered magic wielding super heroes. That is exactly what you get to see in the trailer with Stephen Strange enlisting the help of a post WandaVision Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) to help traverse the multiverse. Scenes show some action with Wanda (Scarlet Witch) being trapped in one scene however, most scenes just sell how psychadelic and loopy the multiverse is. It will be very interesting to see the dynamic between Stephen and Strange shape up especially in absence of the Avengers. Even more interesting will be seeing them combining their powers it truly will be a sight for sore eyes.

New Cast

Disney has been ambitious to say the least with its Marvel releases with each rendition of the franchise introducing more and more A list celebrities. Doctor Strange 2 is no different and probably the most out there casting yet. Rumors circulating at the moment have hinted at Tom Cruise, yes Tom Cruise, and John Krasinski to join the cast. Nay sayers of this theory will say that the trailer does not show either the aforementioned heart throbs. To them we say that the trailer does not show Rachel McAdams either, however she has been cast as Dr.Palmer. So it can be argued that Marvel has more up its sleeve and this lack of information is exactly what they want so they can hit you with an amazing A list surprise.

Controversial Dr. Strange

Bye Bye Rachel McAdams

As mentioned above there are quite a few trailer shots where you can not see Rachel McAdams, specifically there is one scene that has been shown over and over again where the gang is standing in front of the cosmic doorway. Now in some scenes you can clearly see McAdams, standing next to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez. However, in some scenes you cannot this leads to this fan speculation that in fact there is more than one Christine (Rachel McAdam’s character). The one standing next to everyone is not the same Christine everyone got to watch and adore in the original 2016 movie but in fact another one from a different multiverse, this is largely due to the very PA K I S TA N ’ S N U M B E R 1 N E W S PA P E R

unique clothing she is wearing. Another theory is because the trailers with Christine in them predate the trailers with out her, that in fact the directors and producers decided to take the movie in a different direction and hence cut her out. This would not be the

choice most fans are hoping for because she really did bring a lot of diversity and good acting to the original movie.

The Dream Team

You know what’s better than one over

Another important scene from the trailers that is catching a lot of airtime is a particular scene where America Chavez acknowledges her two moms. This scene has seen more controversy than any other Marvel decision in the past. It’s led to China outright banning the movie and Saudi Arabia contacting Disney to cut out the 12 second clip for the Saudi release. To which Disney said no. Regardless of where you stand on LGBTQ content, this ban seems a bit harsh for one line of dialogue that can be censored. Eitherway it seems as though Disney might just still try to work around this. What can be said about the trailer is that it is completely amazing. The visuals, the acting, the everything. It really carries on the progression that each Marvel movie has had with a sequel being shoulders above it’s last iteration. It also seems like long term fans are in for a joy ride as not only do they get to have the Master of Mystic Arts enamouring them with just how smart he is, but also a return of a long time favorit. The movie really is shaping up to be an amazing one and should be on every Marvel Maniacs to watch list if only for the mystery of the new characters Disney has in store for us. Expect long lines at the cinema because you are not alone.

with

Nirvaan Nadeem By Hassan Naqvi Nirvaan Nadeem, Director of Ajoka Institute, has earned for himself a unique and phenomenal position in the field of theatre and performing arts. Having started his career as an actor at the young age of 6 months in path-breaking TV serial “Neelay Hath” in 1989, Nirvaan was born in the Ajoka family. He got involved into socially meaningful theatre as a child. He won accolades for his sensitive portrayal of complex characters, at home and abroad. Nirvaan has played major and sensitive roles in a number of popular TV serials including “Behkava”, “Free Hit”, “Dil Mohallay Ki Haveli”, “Mohabbat Jaye Bharh Mein”, “Jinhay Rastay Mein Khabar Hoi” and “Mein Diwani”. He also appeared in important roles in ISPR TV productions such as “ Faseel-i-Jaan Se Aagay” and “Merya Dhol Sipahya ” about army heroes’ fight against terrorism. Nirvaan’s outstanding contribution to the cause of theatre and performing arts is Ajoka Institute, which he founded in 2018, to provide budding artists opportunity for training and development of their talent. He overcame the profound grief of the loss of his mother, Ajoka founder Madeeha Gauhar and sacrificed his TV acting career in Karachi, to focus on this important and challenging project. He has since designed and conducted courses on acting, writing, dancing and children’s courses. When Covid outbreak devastated the performing arts scene, Nirvaan refused to give up and launched online courses, even for acting students. It was uncharted territory as online acting training was considered impossible till then. His services for theatre were acknowledged when the US State Department selected him to represent young Pakistani actors in an international group which visited the US and interacted with theatre professionals. He has recently been given the Global Film and Music Festival Award (USA) for his contribution to theatre. This week Bold had a tête-à-tête with him.

BOLD: Why did you prefer Ajoka to an acting career?

Nirvaan Nadeem (NN): I come from a relatively privileged background. Unlike my parents, I never had to struggle per se monetary wise. I never really had a real reason, a ‘why’. Ajoka has been a huge part of my life. Something which my mother devoted her entire life to. When she passed away, people were starting to question whether Ajoka could even continue, if it could even survive. I was not prepared for my mother’s life’s work, her legacy to go to waste. The night of her funeral, I remember making the decision to take the reins.

BOLD: How did Ajoka Institute come to be?

NN: There had been no place to learn performing arts. Whatever I learnt, was through Ajoka and the various workshops all over the world. From India to the U.K, U.S and China, all had scores of highly prestigious institutions dedicated specifically to these art forms, but none in Pakistan. I wanted to share the magical and immensely fulfilling experiences I had. I wanted people to experience the beauty of the performing arts. The lack of tolerance in a society is directly related to its exposure to Art, for Art softens you, makes you into a sensitive human being, an understanding and tolerant person. Without exposure to art, a society decays from within. With literally zero rupees in my pocket I decided to give it up a shot, and the rest as they say, is history.

BOLD: How has the journey of leading Ajoka been?

NN: It has been a maturing, humbling, stressful and tremendously fulfilling experience! No one really took me seriously at first, which was justified. I had to prove myself, to my family, to the office staff, to the Ajoka veterans. When someone comes up to me and tells me how a course changed their life, or a play transformed their entire outlook, it provides me all the motivation and inspiration I need. After every successful performance, I have tears in my eyes on the way back.

BOLD: How is running an organisation different from a 9am-5pm job?

NN: When you are running something of your own, the entire burden of responsibility falls to you. If something goes wrong, you cannot blame anyone. The stress is continuous. There is no work-life balance. You must take decisions, take risks not knowing if they are the right ones. Sometimes things go wrong, and you just shrug and try a different approach. But when the risks do pay off, the sense of fulfilment is unbelievable!

BOLD: How do you manage the stresses of daily life?

NN: I perform at my best under pressure, otherwise, life becomes

boring! People view stress as something to overcome, as if happiness and contentment is supposed to be their default state. It is better to acknowledge it as a part of your daily life, and figure out ways to manage it. Whenever I am overwhelmed, I find it best to break down seemingly insurmountable endeavours into smaller, simpler tasks.

BOLD: Your fitness formula?

BOLD: Are you a fitness freak?

NN: My favourite singer is taylor swift, go figure.

NN: I firmly believe in a psycho physical connection. What you put in is directly related to how you feel, your mental clarity and general state of mind, which in turn can affect, positively or negatively, your work as well as your relationships. I strive to be the best I can possibly be. Believe me, there is no drug in the world comparable to living life to the fullest!

BOLD: Anything that you would not let anyone take? NN: My purpose.

BOLD: What do you usually wear in daily life?

NN: Whatever I bought 10 years ago! Or whatever my wife shops for me.

BOLD: Hollywood, Bollywood or Lollywood? NN: Ajoka forever.

BOLD: Last call that you made?

NN: It is an organic food company I usually order from. It must be them!

BOLD: Awards or rewards? NN: Rewarding awards.

BOLD: Extremely possessive about…? NN: My freedom of expression.

BOLD: What is your most annoying habit?

NN: Well, my family says my diet plans are hard to keep up with.

BOLD: What is your biggest/weirdest fear

NN: I can't share all my secrets.

BOLD: Emotional or Practical? NN: Practically emotional.

BOLD: Happiness is…?

NN: Being present in the moment.

BOLD: Who is your celebrity crush? NN: Elon Musk, dude is an inspiration.

BOLD: Which superstar inspires you the most NN: My dad. (Acclaimed Playwright Shahid Nadeem).

BOLD: Your wish that didn’t come true? NN: I don’t wish, I do.

His services for theatre were acknowledged when the US State Department selected him to represent young Pakistani actors in an international group which visited the US and interacted with theatre professionals BOLD: What is the last thing that you bought?

BOLD: Are you a workaholic or shopaholic?

BOLD: Anything that you took for granted and later regretted?

BOLD: Last time you lied? NN: Ask my wife!

BOLD: Any relationship lessons that you have learnt so far?

NN: School/College days. Carefree times. But no regrets.

BOLD: You get super uncomfortable when…?

NN: People boast, brag and name drop for no reason at all confidence is silent.

BOLD: If you could get invisible for a day?

BOLD: If you want to get rid of one of your habits?

BOLD: First pay cheque?

BOLD: What are your healthy habits?

NN: I go to the gym everyday, even on Sundays! PA K I S TA N ’ S N U M B E R 1 N E W S PA P E R

NN: Matcha green tea.

NN: She’s right!

NN: Whenever a habit is counterproductive I take action.

NN: I take all sorts of rumours in my stride, but the most ridiculous one was that the Taliban have taken me to Afghanistan!

BOLD: Who would you go to for relationship advice? NN: My heart.

BOLD: How do you like to spend off days NN: There are no off days!

BOLD: Three things no one knows about you?

NN: I’m actually quite laid back and I’m a nerd at heart. I also own only 2 pairs of jeans.

BOLD: First thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

NN: Positive affirmations, followed by coffee and a book with music.

BOLD: Chai dhaaba or restaurant? NN: Delivery.

BOLD: Have you ever flirted with a fan? NN: My wife is my biggest fan, so yes!

BOLD: What is one thing that always cheers you up when you are upset?

NN: My wife’s smile. Massage at the local barber shop. Gym.

BOLD: What would you be if not a Director?

NN: A cricketer. I used to bowl really fast!

BOLD: What do you think this country needs the most?

BOLD: What bores you the most?

NN: Workaholic, for sure.

NN: Trust me, I have heard all sorts of rumours about myself. I can’t wish for more.

BOLD: Worst rumour about you?

BOLD: Romantic or not?

NN: Any wall or place with lots of tiny holes, or close concentric circles. It’s a phobia called Trypophobia. NN: Counter productive conversations.

BOLD: A rumour that you would wish to spread about yourself?

NN: I would go and read that controversial letter/telegram! NN: An ajoka play I did as a teen.

BOLD: Anything that has changed your life? NN: Getting married.

NN: Tolerance.

BOLD: Going to the past and undoing a mistake or going to the future and seeing how your life would be?

NN: My mistakes made me who I am today. Would never be interested in seeing my own future, there would be no excitement anymore. However, it would be extremely curious to see like a million years down the line, to see what has become of everything.

BOLD: Luck or hard work? NN: Smart Work.

BOLD: Any message that you would like to give to your fans?

NN: You are guaranteed to fall down. Many times. Life keeps giving you punches. Your job is to keep getting up, keep taking those punches, and moving forward.
