Steps to Becoming a Lifeguard Want to be a lifeguard? Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Bronze Star

Step 2: Bronze Medallion Bronze Medallion focuses on the four components of a watmer rescue – judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. This is the first official step to becoming a lifeguard if you are 13 years of age or older.

NL is the nationally recognized lifeguard certification and is the final step to becoming a lifeguard. Program includes classroom and water activities. 100% attendance and participation is required. Final exam will be held on the final day of the course. *Participants must participate in all three parts of the course.

This course is the first step to becoming a lifeguard if you are under the age of 13 and is a preview to the world of lifeguarding. This course will introduce basic lifesaving skills and water safety procedures.

Prerequisites: 13 years of age or Bronze Star

Summer session: Sessions 1 and 3

Prerequisites: None

Prerequisites: Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid Certification

Ages: 16 years (by exam date) and older Spring Session: Sundays 1:30–6:30 PM

Step 3: Bronze Cross

Spring session: Friday and Saturday

Ages: 13 + Spring session: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday

Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, and teamwork.

For all lifeguarding courses, students MUST be available for the exam date (the last day of each program).

Step 4: National Lifeguard Service Award (NL)

National Lifeguard Service (NL) Recertification

Ages: 13 +

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the NLS program within the last five years.

Spring session: Friday and Sunday

Spring session: Saturday, May 9

Summer session: Sessions 2 and 4

Duration: 5 hours
