CREATE A KILLER PROFILE
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
17
Creating the a good LinkedIn profile is the essential ingredient to getting noticed. You are creating a your own brand for employment. Watch this YouTube clip from Deakin University “LinkedIn for Students” (3.46mins) about your LinkedIn Profile. TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
18
TIPS FOR CREATING A KILLER PROFILE Personalise your headline by using relevant keywords that match what you do. In other words don’t rely on buzz words that sound like they belong in a fancy advertising campaign. For example don’t call yourself and amazing wordsmith when what you’re trying to say is that you excellent communication skills.
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
19
Add a profile picture: Make sure your profile picture shows you looking professional. It should be recent and high quality, you should be smiling and wearing professional clothing. Do not use avatars, animals, memes, social pictures such as at a wedding or out partying or posing in any way. Remember, you want to engage not divulge! TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
20
Add a summary. You can be more creative in your summary than you can be with your headline. Make the first 2 lines powerful and relevant to what you do, this will make people take notice and click the read more to see your full summary. Always write your summary in the first person.
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
21
Your summary should be a cross between what you would included in your cover letter, and the overview paragraph of your resume. Ideally you will include the top 15 skills/ keywords. You are promoting the value that you will bring to an employer.
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
22
Keywords really matter. This is a search engine, so feed the algorithm with keywords that people will look for. Not sure what keywords to use, try looking at job ads, company websites and other LinkedIn profiles of relevant individuals and companies. See what language they use to describe jobs and skills and include those in your profile. TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
23
Keep your summary brief. Do not use the full 2000 word count you’re allowed. Keep it to 250 – 300 words – 2 – 3 paragraphs. Try and write as you speak, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through. This is your brand and you want to stand out.
TAFE NSW
PRESENTATION TITLE TO GO HERE
24
Show lots of white space People have short attention spans and many will skim your text. Steer clear of long dense paragraphs. Use bullet points and sub-headings to make it easier on the eyes. Don’t use a five-syllable word when you can use a one-syllable word that is just as good. Keep your words, sentences, and paragraphs tight.
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018

25
Use multi media on your profile If you have a video, SlideShare or article that’s of you or relevant to what you do, then add that in too.
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
26
The purpose of joining LinkedIn is to seek employment opportunities and build a professional network. To help achieve this, you need to be visible, create value, share knowledge and be active at least once a week. Always be professional and keep your profile up to date. And make sure you are honest!
TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
27
The focus of LinkedIn is the professional world. Therefore any content you post should: Be of value to someone’s career (whether as a business owner or employee) Offer a tip related to business growth, or a career Inspire someone in their work life Be relevant to the industry in which you operate in Come from a credible source TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
28
Do not post content such as Animated GIFs, Ellen videos and “texts-from-my-mom” screenshots cat videos. LinkedIn’s purpose is professional not social. TAFE NSW
Lunchtime bites – LinkedIn 2018
29
Optimize your content for engagement: Include puns or fun jokes to make professionals laugh— usually at their industry. Provide useful, career-related tips. Show impressive industry or company stats. Keep it short and include a link, image, or video. Evoke an emotion.
