Buy property in Spain without stretching your budget When you’re hunting for a property, it’s easy to get swept away by the sweet smell of wine and serrano ham, or the charms of the local towns and villages. However, at some point, practical considerations will creep in – like how you’re going to transfer your hard-earned money to Spain to seal the deal on your dream home. The world of foreign currency can be a strange and confusing place. If you’re making overseas transfers for the first time, it’s easy to get a bad deal or lose a lot of money without realising it until it’s too late. You might not know that, if you use your local or high street bank, you could lose thousands in transfer fees and unfavourable exchange rates. We could save you up to 5% compared to your bank.

Peace of mind When looking for an exchange provider, you want to get the best rates and great service. You want someone to talk to you, to understand what’s important to you and what you want to achieve. But most importantly, you want to make sure your funds are in safe hands. After all, it’s your money we’re talking about. We’re authorised by the FCA* for the provision of payment services and have Dun & Bradstreet's highest credit rating.

Living the simple life Our friendly and knowledgeable team are available on the phone whenever you need them. With a presence in Spain since 1999, we have eight offices across the country and are always looking to expand. We don’t baffle you with jargon or hit you with hidden costs, and your money will be transferred quickly. That means you can start enjoying all the wonderful things Spain has to offer sooner rather than later! Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, it's important to keep on top of the currency market. For more information contact us on + 34 950 478 914 or visit currenciesdirect.com and quote "Ultimate magazine" for your preferential rate. A pair of sunglasses seems so simple Two pieces of tinted glass or plastic in some sort of plastic or metal frame. How much more straightforward can something get? It turns out that there are many different things you can do with two pieces of glass, and these things can have a big effect on you when you use the lenses. As you will see in this article, there really is a difference between the various sunglasses you’ll find out there. There are four things that a QUALITY pair of sunglasses should do for you: 1 Sunglasses provide protection from ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the cornea and the retina. Good sunglasses can eliminate UV rays completely. 20

vs

quality

2 Sunglasses provide protection from intense light. When the eye receives too much light, it naturally closes the iris. Once it has closed the iris as far as it can, the next step is squinting. If there is still too much light, as there can be when sunlight is reflecting off of snow, the result is damage to the retina. Good sunglasses can block light entering the eyes by as much as 97 percent to avoid damage. 3 Sunglasses provide protection from glare. Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light, and the bright spots can be distracting or can hide objects. Good sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization.

4 Sunglasses eliminate specific frequencies of light. Certain frequencies of light can blur vision, and others can enhance contrast. Choosing the right color for your sunglasses lets them work better in specific situations. When you buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, you often give up all of these benefits and can even make things worse. For example, if your sunglasses offer no UV protection, you increase your exposure to UV rays. The cheap sunglasses block some of the light, causing your iris to open to allow more light in. This lets in more of the UV light as well, increasing the damage UV light can cause to the retina. So there is a difference. Buying the right pair of good sunglasses for the conditions in which you use them gives you maximum protection and performance.

Along with the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia, the Vuelta makes up cycling’s prestigious, three week-long Grand Tours. While the route changes each year, the format of the race stays the same with the appearance of at least two time trials, the passage through the mountain chain of the Pyrenees, and the finish in the Spanish capital Madrid. The modern editions of the Vuelta a España consist of 21 daylong segments, stages, over a 23-day period that includes 2 rest days. All of the stages are timed to the finish, after finishing the riders’ times are compounded with their previous stage times. The rider with the lowest aggregate time is the leader of the race and gets to don the red jersey. While the general classification garners the most attention there are other contests held within the Vuelta: the points classification for the sprinters, the mountains classification for the climbers, combination classification for the all-round riders, and the team classification for the competing teams.

Labour of

Volunteers tirelessly helping marine-animals in need. By Adéle Land For almost 15 years, a dedicated group of volunteers has been helping rescue and rehabilitate marine animals and other species, as part of the Almeríabased NGO, ‘Equinac’. The Equinac team is made up of a group of professionals and volunteers including, vets, marine biologists, technicians and scientists. The team is on call 24-hours a day to react to beach strandings up and down the coast, including those of dolphins, whales, turtles and other sea creatures. While Equinac holds a permit from the environment ministry to handle strandings along the coast of Almería, thanks to the group’s good relationship with other networks it has been called upon to assist in other areas including Murcia. The NGO, which is proud to be a member of the ‘World Cetacean Alliance’ (WCA), relies heavily on donations from the public and support from other animal charities, some local businesses have also offered support including Mojacar estate agency New Wave Villas. Another part of the group’s work involves helping other charities dedicated to the rescue of animals held in captivity such as circuses and zoos. In conjunction with Spanish group ‘Anadel’, Equinac helped liberate a handful of lions and cubs from different circuses across Spain and is very active in denouncing the mistreatment of animals in captivity. The Equinac headquarters is in Almerimar where the group has a rehabilitation centre which is closed to the public as the animals are usually recuperating and resting before the next stage of their rehabilitation. For live strandings the group has a ‘portable’ centre which can be moved to any location on a lorry. This may sound very high-tech but is really quite basic and more materials are always needed in order for the volunteers to continue their amazing work. The portable centre was brought into action recently when a small adult striped dolphin was stranded live in a cove in Mojacar. Volunteers rushed to the scene and after some time and plenty of patience, the animal was moved in the portable centre, to a location in Almería port. Volunteers took long shifts in the pool with the dolphin they named Manu and for six days it was touch and go as to whether he would survive. Sadly on the sixth day Manu gave up the fight and following a necropsy it was discovered that he had some underlying medical issues. On a happier note a small sea turtle called Anca, rescued by the group was released back into the sea last month, another sea turtle, Juan was found 34

with an injured fin which had to be amputated but he recovered well and is currently continuing to recuperate in the aquarium in Roquetas de Mar. Rescued animals are often named after the fist volunteer at the scene! The level of dedication from this group of volunteers is truly humbling, Alexander Sanchez, from Almerimar, studied marine biology at Granada university and went on to do a marine mammal medic course at British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) in the UK. He has also volunteered with the ‘Orca Foundation’ in South Africa. News of Alexander’s dedication together with the rest of the Equinac volunteers has spread far and wide and he has recently been invited to New Zealand to visit with member of ‘Whale Rescue’ and assist in any strandings there. The main group of volunteers is assisted by others known as the ‘stranding network’, people who can be called to assist at any time of the day or night to help with any incidents. Stranding network volunteers are chosen specifically for their teamwork abilities, calmness in difficult situations and skills in working with animals in the water. Ultimate Almería Magazine, features writer and local journalist, Adéle Land, along with husband Alex, were recently invited to become part of the ‘stranding network’ and assisted

with a live stranding last month. Equinac has a good relationship with the press, both Spanish and English, but is keen to ensure the correct information goes out to the public. Mr Sanchez stressed the importance of documenting each incident with photos and information, regular updates are posted to the group’s Facebook page. Working with Equinac doesn’t have to involve being in direct contact with the animals, the group also organises beach clean-ups and hikes and the volunteers are also available to give talks at group events.

Anyone interested in becoming a ‘sponsor’ should email info@equinac.org. The most important point that Equinac aims to get across is the importance of reporting any strandings or incidents correctly. Members of the public who witness an incident should immediately call 112, a toll-free emergency number and give clear information on the location of the stranding. On receiving the call, volunteers will be immediately despatched to the area and time is always of the essence. Members of the public should not attempt to return the animal out to sea nor should they touch the animal unless it appears to be drowning, in this case it should be turned upright so its ‘blowhole’ is out of the water, while usually well-intended, members of the public trying to ‘help’ have often made the situation deteriorate before the volunteers have arrived.

Find out more information by visiting www.equinac.org or Facebook, “Equinac”

Fully aware of the ‘big picture’, Equinac, places great emphasis on the need to ensure the sea and beaches are clean and safe for all sea-creatures and much of the resources are channelled into ensuring the Almería coastline is a safe place for the many species that call it home. Another way for people to get involved is to become a sponsor. This summer Equinac is offering boat trips to sponsors who donate 30 euros (or more!). The object of the trips, as well as a ‘thank-you’ to the sponsors, is to get out on the water and try to observe the local dolphin populations. While no guarantees are made of dolphin sightings, about 50 to 60 per cent of the time they will be spotted. Photos - Caroline Sánchez, Michael Suarez, Alexander Sánchez and Agustin Martin.

WILD WILD WEST Whilst on Holiday or even if you live here why not take a trip to the Wild West in Tabernas at Fort Bravo or Mini Hollywood. These have been the sites of many spaghetti Westerns including “A fistful of Dollars”.

It is a Western-styled theme park in the province of Almería in Spain. Built in the early 1970s, it lies a few kilometers to the north of the N-340 road highway (468 km mark), near the town of Tabernas.

In the early 1980s, he started charging visitors money to tour the set. Mock shoot-outs and barroom brawls were later added, and one of the buildings was converted into a full saloon to sell beer. The Spanish set consists of a town square, a church, and houses found in a typical Mexican pueblo. Texas Hollywood remains an active film set. The New Camp Indian has been restored with new decorations typical of the time. With the colourful teepees it is well worth a visit.

The television series Queen of Swords was filmed May 3, 2000 to December 12, 2000, principally in the Spanish buildings and the surrounding Tabernas Desert. The Western buildings were also used for the series with the Western jail serving as the Spanish jail and one of the large Western buildings was converted into a sound stage containing the living quarters of both Senorita Alvarado and Col. Montoya. Oasys, Mini Hollywood is another Spanish Western-styled theme park, located off the 364 km mark of the N-340 road, near the town of Tabernas in the province of Almería, Andalusia. Originally known as Yucca City, the set was designed by Carlo Simi and

AN EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF ANIMAL FACTS THAT YOU MIGHT FIND QUITE INTERESTING

ANGLERFISH

The male deep-sea anglerfish is much smaller than the female. But he has giant eyes to look for a suitable female and enormous nostrils to sniff out her pheromones. Having found her, he latches onto her with his teeth and then starts to disappear. Scales, bones, blood vessels all merge into those of the female. After a few weeks, all that’s left of the male are the testes hanging off the female’s side, supplying her with his genes.

hundreds more with diameters less than the wavelength of light. This creates a powerful bond between the electrons in the two surfaces. One square centimetre of adhesive tape based on this principle has already been manufactured. If enough can be made to cover a human hand, you could hang by it from the ceiling.

BEAVER

SCORPION

Scorpions give birth to live young and some species are pregnant for longer than humans. They are one of the very few invertebrates to have independently evolved a womb where embryos are fed by teats linked to the mother (rather than by the yolk of an egg). Labour can take days, with up to 100 offspring scurrying up their mother’s claws to nestle on her back underneath her sting, so nothing can get to them. Nothing that is, except the mother who, if she gets hungry, may snack on them herself.

In 1760, the College of Physicians and Faculty of Divinity in Paris classified the beaver as a fish because of its scaly tail. This meant that the French settlers in North America could officially eat beaver during Lent and on other fast days. Beaver tail is supposed to taste like roast beef.

OCTOPUS

The male blanket octopus takes sexual discretion to a whole new level. He is 40,000 times smaller than the female and his technique involves tearing off his mating arm, placing it somewhere on her body and then swimming off to die. Given that this is roughly equivalent to a herring nudging a blue whale, it’s unlikely she’s even aware of him. Meanwhile, his disengaged arm crawls into her gill slit, where it can live for as long as month, until her eggs are mature. She KOALA Koala means “no water” in the now extinct then retrieves it, tears it open like a packet Dharuk language of south-eastern Australia. of café sugar and sprinkles the sperm over Koalas hardly ever have to drink because her eggs. their diet consists entirely of eucalyptus leaves, which are 50 per cent water. SPIDER

Spiders’ silk is five times stronger than steel and 30 times more stretchy than nylon. An average spider will spin more than four miles of silk in a lifetime and this can be collected and woven into garments. However, the spiders’ predatory nature makes them tricky to farm: put 10,000 spiders in a sealed room and you will eventually end up with a single enormously fat spider. (Despite their reputation, female black widows only eat one in ten of their mates, although they can get through twenty five partners in one day.)

WALRUS

When walruses find a clam, they hold it firm in their lips, create a vacuum around it and use their tongue like a piston to extract the soft tissue. As a special treat, they hoover up seagulls from underneath or suck the brains of seal pups out through their nostrils. Walruses have a sucking power three times stronger than the average Dyson vacuum cleaner, which explains why their stomachs are full of small pebbles.

Spanish Women When democracy was returned to Spain in the late 1970s the social values and roles of Spanish women in society began to change dramatically. For centuries Spanish women were subject to a strict conservative moral code of conduct and restricted professional opportunities aimed at preserving the family structure under the Francoist regime. This dramatic transition of Spanish women’s role in society was most noticeable in the workforce. Spanish women were previously largely excluded from working but by the late 1970s 22% of all Spanish women were employed; by 1984 the percentage had risen to 33%. Queen Sofía of Spain (top) was the reining queen of Spain of Greek origin. Sofia participates in many official and political acts in Spain and is a figurehead of the Spanish monarchy.

Another astounding change for Spanish women was the possibility of accessing higher education. By 1983 a staggering 46% of university student enrollment was by Spanish women; the 31st highest female enrollment rate in the world. The Spanish woman had arrived and found her place in Spanish society and the world. In more recent years, Spanish woman have played an increasing role within Spanish politics and other public areas. Breaking the boundaries set by the past, today, Spanish women can be found among lists of some of the most powerful people in Europe and even the world.

LIFESTYLE Following on from the last edition here are some more healthy eating tips

Lean Protein The experts tell us to eat more veggies, enjoy whole grains and get enough lean protein to maintain optimum health. Seems simple enough, right? But you may be slumped over your grocery cart, scratching your head — what exactly is a lean protein? Which fruits and veggies? 48

E

Kale

Dark Chocolate

Sweet Potatoes

Blueberries

Quinoa

Tomatoes

Ten years ago, you may not have found kale in your supermarket, but things have changed. Today, kale is an “in” food. As a member of a family of veggies called crucifers, it is a cancer fighter. Rich in vitamin K, kale also aids in blood clotting and cell growth. A great addition to any soup or salad.

Sweeter than an Idaho potato and full of potassium, sweet potatoes help lower blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. The sweet potato skin has lots of fiber, so prepare them with a skin that’s good enough to eat.

This little seed is actually a whole grain, in fact it’s a complete protein. That means you gain whole-grain advantages like fibre and lower risk for heart disease and diabetes plus the amino acids necessary for revving metabolism and building muscle. Use in place of rice as a side dish or toss into soups and salads.

Salmon

Salmon is rich in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Besides protecting the heart, omega-3s ward off premature aging and memory loss. Grill salmon with a little lemon, olive oil, salt and pepper. Make enough so the next day you can toss the leftovers into a salad!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the gold standard throughout the Mediterranean. Heart-healthy and high in monounsaturated fats, EVOO helps lower cholesterol. Because EVOOs are not overly refined, they contain more antioxidants, vitamin E and oleocanthal that help reduce inflammation.

You need to eat chocolate by the piece and not by the pound. You’ll still benefit from its strong concentration of cocoa, which is packed with the antioxidant flavonol. People who indulge in chocolate regularly are slimmer than those who don’t, according to Archives of Internal Medicine.

You can judge a fruit by its color. Blueberries’ deep-colored skin is a giveaway that they are rich in antioxidants. Blueberries also contain lots of vitamin C and E and are known for their heart-protective, memory-boosting, urinary-tract-supporting carotenoids and flavonoids.

The antioxidant lycopene accounts for tomatoes’ deep red color. And they provide vitamins A, C, and K. Chop them up and add them to just about anything, or use them as a base for soups and sauces.

Apples The fiber (pectin) in apples clears LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. And apples contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant phytochemicals. Eat an apple a day!

Pumpkins Stuffed with fiber, vitamin A and beta-carotene, pumpkin helps prevent heart disease. There’s no need to roast your jack-olantern. Canned pumpkin is a healthy and convenient choice.

2 PHOTOGRAPHYHINTS&TIPS Each edition, local professional photographer, Dean Baker, will be supplying a few tips and guides to help us with our photography skills. Whether you’re a total beginner, enthusiast or keen amateur, we hope there is always something for you to take from this.

equipment

worthwhile extras... I started last issue explaining about different camera types and some essential equipment needed when caring for your camera like a good bag, strap and cleaning equipment. In this issue I’d like to point you towards some extra kit that will help you take better photos or be better organised. • Tripod or Monopod. Most people won’t require a tripod or monopod as many modern cameras have high shutter speeds or advanced low light shooting modes, eradicating the need but if you really like shooting at night, landscapes or are even into macro (close-up) photos, you’ll benefit from a these. As I will always say, choose one that suits you budget but ideally you want to be looking for a combination of lightweight, yet strong & sturdy to carry your camera, depending on the type. • Spare Memory Cards. With the ever increasing pixel count (megapixels) making your photo file sizes bigger, you can never have too much storage. Most common are SD cards and I recommend always having at least one or two spare when out and about with your camera. It can be a real pain filling up a card and still wanting to take a shot and you can’t, you could miss something! More in Memory cards in a later issue. • Spare batteries or charger. There is nothing worse than running out of battery power at the crucial moment so be prepared! Always have enough spare rechargeable or replacement batteries with you or bring your charger, you can usually stop for a beer or coffee somewhere and pinch a bit of electric! If you have these extras with you then you shouldn’t have to much to worry about as you’re pretty covered for most scenarios. It is worth mentioning being here in Spain and next to the beach, that I always have a plastic bag or waterproof pouch, especially if I’m on a beach shoot for that extra protection. Sand in your equipment can be devastating so be careful.

non-essential extras... There are also a few things you can take with you, whilst non-essential, could help you in certain situations. • Camera instructions. It’s always good to keep a copy of these (obtainable from the web in most cases) in your camera bag because it could help you remember a certain function or mode on your camera or get you out of a confused muddle when experimenting with shooting modes.

A reflector can really help if you are having trouble with shadowy areas of your subject or getting a more even light without using your flash. These fold up types are very affordable and come in a range of sizes and I don’t go anywhere with out it. Especially if you’re taking portraits in the sun or crawling around taking close up shots of flowers or bugs.

• Filters, Gels or Reflectors. If your camera allows filters to be added to the lens, make sure you have at the very least, a UV filter on, this will help protect the lens. Other filters or “Gels” can be made using coloured, transparent plastics and held in front of the lens for sometimes exciting or creative results. A reflector can help light your subject in shadowy areas by bouncing the available light into those regions. You can buy these specifically for photographers or use the car windshield reflectors (silvery material) as a makeshift reflector. NEXT ISSUE: I will go into more depth about camera modes and settings, what all those little icons and pictures mean on your camera and how best to utilize them to your benefit. Happy snapping! 51

PIMM’S

O’Clock Pimm’s originated in an Oyster Bar in Poultry Street, in the City of London, owned by James Pimm in 1840. Here he created the Pimm’s ‘house Cup’ flavoured with liqueurs, and fruit extracts.

He rapidly built up a chain of restaurants in a variety of locations, including The Old Bailey and other places “to be seen” for City businessmen of the day. James Pimm is said to have blended his famous ‘No 1 Cup’, on the premises and it was then sold in pints in pewter tankards. By 1859, Pimm’s was on sale outside of the restaurants and in 1865, the company was sold to Frederick Sawyer and the first bottle of Pimm’s was sold for 3 shillings.

The company was sold on again in 1875, this time to Sir Horatio Davies, who in the following years expanded the sale of the drink. It could be found not only the UK, but also throughout the British Empire and the association of the drink with all things British began.

The No 1 cup is as popular today as ever. The first Pimm’s bar opened at the world-famous Wimbledon tennis tournament in 1971, and every year over 80,000 pints of Pimm’s with Lemonade are sold to spectators.

Recipe Traditional Pimm’s No. 1 Now this one is as easy as it gets...

• Take a jug (if you want to make several glasses) or a glass and add as much ice as you like. • Pour one part Pimm’s No. 1 with three parts lemonade over the ice. • Add mint leaves, thin cucumber slices, orange slices and strawberry (all or some depending on what you prefer) and serve.

BBQ Summer is here and everyone is getting ready for the summer barbeques. Outdoor grilling can be a fun family or friend activity during the warmer months and grilling meat, fish and veggies make for more flavorsome foods.

Good outdoor grilling begins before you start up the flames. Let’s look at some pre-grilling hints and tips first. 1. Marinate meats for grilling. Marinating meat before you grill can actually reduce your cooking time, because the marinade is designed to tenderize the meat, not to mention the flavorful marinades you can purchase or make yourself to give your meat a kick. If you marinate before you grill, try to let the meat marinate at least 2-4 hours for the best flavour and tenderising results. 2. Skewered meat and vegetables for grilling. When using skewers to grill meat and vegetables, it is important to cut the meat into similar sized pieces to ensure even cooking on the grill. When grilling meat and vegetables on the same skewer, ensure the meat is smaller than the vegetables and well tenderized before grilling, so that the vegetables, which will cook faster than the meat, don’t burn before the meat is done. It’s also important to ensure the pieces are 76

Keeping it cool... Summer is upon us, long lazy days, gettogethers with friends and family over the barbecue and long sultry evenings. Hot weather calls for cool drinks and what better and easier way to refresh yourself and relax than with a huge jug (or any other container) filled with a chilled summery drink. ‘Coolers’, or ‘Punches’ are for sharing, they are easy to make and easy to serve. Make a massive one before all your guests arrive and let everyone help themselves. You can be innovative with what you use to make the cooler in, stick to a traditional large jug or punch bowl or for larger parties fill a (new) dustbin with the delicious drink. Another interesting way of serving the cooler is to slice open a large melon, scoop out the fruit and fill with the liquid. Coolers are varied and easy to make, choose from a selection of alcoholic or non-alcoholic recipes, mix and match and try out your own ideas, or choose themed drinks depending on the occasion. Spanish coolers or sharing drinks include Sangria and Tinto de Verano. Traditional Sangria is a mix of red wine, choose a good quality wine, a Tempranillo works well, not too sweet, not too dry, with a glug of brandy, a splash of orange juice, sugar to taste and topped up with ice and slices of orange. Change up the flavour by adding chunks of pineapple or apple or any other fruit of your choice. Ideally leave it for a while before serving to allow the fruit to soak up the wine and become soft. 78

A twist on the traditional Sangria and a little lighter is White Sangria, mix dry white wine with a splash of calvados or apple liqueur, add slices of apple and serve over ice. Tinto de Verano (red wine of the summer) is made with a decent quality red wine with lashings of Sprite or if you are in Spain, Gaseosa or Casera, plenty of ice and a slice of lemon, it couldn’t be simpler. Champagne Cooler is a luxurious drink, perfect for a special occasion, no need to use good quality Champagne, a reasonably priced Cava will work just as well, use a dry or ‘brut’ version. Add some glugs of cranberry juice, half the amount of gaseosa or Sprite to the amount of Cava and garnish with lemon and sprigs of fresh mint. Rum Punch is great for a Caribbean themed party, a little bit lethal so make sure your guests have the number of a taxi to hand! Mix copious amounts of dark rum with a splash of grenadine, banana liqueur and pineapple juice, add slices of lemon and lime a just enough ice to keep it chilled without diluting the flavour. One of my favourite non-alcoholic summer drinks is Watermelon Cooler. Easy to make and very refreshing. Scoop out the fruit of a watermelon into a blender, add chopped mint and a tablespoon of grated ginger, whizz it for a few minutes and serve in large tumblers topped with a splash of gaseosa and a cube of ice. For an alcoholic version vodka works well with the flavour of the melon. Another punch with a ‘kick’ is Margarita Punch. Start with a bowl or jug of gaseosa or Sprite and simply add Tequila to taste, a

splash of orange juice and freshly squeezed lime juice. Add ice and float slices of lime on the top. Perfect with Mexican food. There really is no hard and fast rule with coolers, have fun experimenting with flavour combinations and use your guests as guinea pigs! Remember to label the drinks so your guests know which contain alcohol and make sure the bowls or jugs are topped up regularly. Don’t forget to supply a ladle or a way of serving the drinks into tumblers, if you don’t have a ladle, use a glass with a handle or a smaller jug. Remember your younger guests and think of fun recipe ideas for a child-friendly cooler and make sure the little angels don’t help themselves to the adult version! Once the coolers are made all you need to do is light the barbecue, kick back and relax and get this party started!

Daring to Bare...

Nudist beaches throughout Andalucía

While going naked isn’t for everyone, more and more people are taking to the idea of being free and at one with nature, especially while on holiday. Around two million people a year practice naturism on beaches throughout Spain.

Many designated nudist beaches have bars where clothing is optional and on some nudist complexes it is actually frowned upon to wear clothes at all when using the facilities.

Close to the large town of Motril is 4. Playa de la Joya, a sandy beach with few facilities but guaranteed privacy due to its access down a steep flight of steps.

The Costa de Almería has the largest number of nudist beaches in Andalucía, the most famous being 1. Vera Natura, with a handful of dedicated naturist complexes, bars, restaurants and a glorious sandy beach, it is the most well-known nudist area in Europe. Vera boasts the Certain municipalities have added only four-star naturist hotel in Spain, by-laws banning nudism on beaches the Vera Playa Club. other than those designated for the practice. If you fancy baring all further inland, the impressive 5. Negratin reservoir has a small dedicated nudist area with a ramp to enter the water.

The region of Andalucía has the highest concentration of naturist accommodation in Spain, with apartment complexes, camp sites and even hotels dedicated to naturism. Spanish law remains somewhat vague on rules regarding nudism with the constitution stating that people have “the right to personal freedom of expression” and the “right not to be discriminated against based on moral grounds”.

82

The busy Costa de Sol has plenty of nudist beaches to choose from, 6. Costa Natura was Spain’s first nudist resort, opened in the 1970s. The resort boasts luxury accommodation with spa facilities or outside visitors can purchase a day pass.

While not a dedicated naturist beach, 7. Playa de las Dunas has a clothingoptional section, with gently shelving sands and a handful of restaurants (where clothing must be worn). 8. Benalnatura is fully naturist beach, located close to the Benalmadena-Torrequebrada casino, it even has a bar where you will not be served if you are wearing clothes! The Atlantic coast of Spain, the Costa de la Luz has, without doubt, some of the most spectacular beaches in AndalucĂa, some of which have designated nudist areas.

9. Playa Arroyo, near Zahara de los Atunes, is a bit of a trek from the nearest parking area but well worth the effort, miles of golden sand awaits you, but remember to take drinks and snacks as facilities are limited. 10. Playa del Faro, by the Trafalgar lighthouse, is another popular clothing-optional spot as well as La Mangueta. The Costa de la Luz is famous for kitesurfing so there is always plenty to see, although those participating in this extreme sport usually don a wetsuit! Remember, the best naturist beaches are usually located off the beaten track so be prepared for a bit of a hike but what awaits you will be the freedom to strip off your clothes along with your inhibitions in your own little piece of paradise.

CLUB LENGTHS Do not assume for one minute that the standard length clubs found on the racks in your local pro’s shop or golf discount store will be right for you. Ninety eight percent of drivers these days are built to a standard length of between 45 and 45½ inches. A 45 inch driver will not fit 90% of all golfers let alone let them achieve the best combination of distance and accuracy. Tiger Wood’s driver is only 43½ inches in length and he has been hitting a driver of this length for most of his golfing career. If he could hit a 45 inch long driver straight and control it he probably would, but he can‘t, so he doesn’t. The average length of drivers used by professionals on the PGA tour today is 44 inches, so if professional golfers know that they can’t control a 45 or a 45½ inch driver, what are the chances that amateurs can? If your driver is too long for you, get it shortened by a competent club maker and have the clubs swing weight restored it to its original swing weight.

I know some of you will be saying; “What world does this chap live in, he is still using feet and inches.” Well, the majority of golf clubs, shafts and grips etc are manufactured for the USA market and the USA do not use metric measurements. Don’t just cut down your existing clubs to the recommended lengths as this will alter the swing weight, balance and the lie of your clubs and these alterations will be critical to their performance. Have this work done by a competent club maker who will restore the swing weight, balance and lie for the clubs new adjusted length.

Golfers come in all shapes and sizes, all of different heights and with different arm lengths. Height and arm length are two of the most important elements to be considered in determining the best club lengths. If you do nothing else, get yourself The difference that you will find in measured to ensure that the clubs that you are at present playing with are of the correct accuracy and on centre hits after having length for your physique. When is a golf club not a golf club? By Tony Myles This is not a complicated riddle it is merely the fact that Campbell Lamont Golf is now a fully affiliated member of the Spanish Federation. Sin Campo - merely meaning that his is without a golf course. This is the end result of a long period of negotiation and it represents a major step forward for Campbell and his team, and it recognises the quality and attention to detail which is typical of the Campbell Lamont Golf organisation. Many of Campbell’s clients were aware of his efforts in this direction and there was a collective sigh from those who have anticipated this for what must seem to be an interminable amount of time. In a recent radio interview Campbell was asked a number of pertinent questions on the subject. Here is an extract -

Why is the Federation important? Campbell - In any sport it is important to have an official body who will oversee the general efficacy of the game. They must be empowered to provide management of rules and regulations and should be the final authority on whose adjudications the participants can depend. They should also be viewed as being supportive and communicative. This is why this is such a positive step forward for both parties. The Federation already has in excess of 300,000 members in Spain and a very small percentage of those are non-Spanish. The appointment of Campbell Lamont as a Federated Club creates an instant channel into the Ex-Pat community. Both parties are now focussed on encouraging more non-Spanish players to become members.

Why has it taken so long to reach this position? Campbell - In common with all official bodies the Spanish Golf Federation has to proceed with great caution in its dealings I am proud that this decision is a further indication of my company’s standing in the Spanish golfing community and, everyone who knows the Federation, will appreciate what a significant achievement it is. This organisation is multifaceted and so there is no simple dialogue or well trodden route to pursue and both parties have had to proceed carefully to ensure that all due diligence requirements were fulfilled.

So what exactly does this mean for your clients? Campbell - Many of our clients will be aware that, with this, we have secured a significant stage in one of my major ambitions. I want to be more than just the major golf retailer I want to deliver a total service to the golfing community and, in order to do so, I need to be able to manage areas such as handicap regulations and recording. In order to do so I need a close working relationship with the governing body for the sport. The existing membership of the Spanish Federation has a very small percentage of Ex-Pat golfers and I am hopeful that, through our efforts, we can see this number increase by the addition of several thousand CLG clients who currently may be unaware of the benefits that may be accrued from Federation membership.”

88

So what are these benefits? Campbell - I have a concern that so many golfers in Spain and particularly on the Costas, participate in the sport with no personal insurance protection. When you step onto a golf course you are prepared to propel a missile at over 150 mph and hope that it gets close to the intended destination. The frequent shouts of “FORE!” will demonstrate that this is often not the case and your golf ball is potentially heading towards a human target. There is a misguided assumption that, having paid a green fee, you are immune from blame and from any subsequent claims but this just isn’t true. You can be held responsible. Unlike the States I don’t believe that Spain is a litigious country, and therefore we will not be seeing players feigning injury in order to sue for extravagant sums, but nevertheless if a stray shot slices over a boundary fence and causes a serious road accident, then it would not be surprising to find that the injured party seeks some redress. So when we enrol a golfer into the Federation one of the first benefits is free comprehensive insurance cover. Then we can talk about all the other areas such as handicap management, reduced green fees, priority in competitions etc . .” There is no denying the excitement that this announcement has generated within Campbell’s company and over the coming weeks a lot more detail and new developments will be forthcoming. Dangerous Roads

For thousands of years roads have provided a means for safer and more efficient movement of goods and people, but as you will see in a moment this is not always the case. While some of the roads on our list are heavily traveled thoroughfares others are remote, winding, and narrow. Whatever the case may be though, the most dangerous roads in the world will likely convince you that walking isn’t really that bad after all.

1. North Yungas Road, Bolivia

The North Yungas Road (alternatively known as Grove’s Road, Coroico Road, Camino de las Yungas, Road of fate or Death Road) is a 61-or69-kilometre (38 or 43 mi) road leading from La Paz to Coroico, 56 kilometres (35 mi) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia. It is legendary for its extreme danger and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the “world’s most dangerous road”.In 2006 one estimate stated that 200 to 300 travellers were killed yearly along the road. The road includes cross markings on many of the spots where vehicles have fallen. It is a regular occurrence for buses and trucks to go tumbling to the valley below, especially when they try passing each other. Yea, walking doesn’t sound too bad after all.

2. Commonwealth Ave, Philippines

More popularly known as the “Killer Highway” of the Philippines, Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City has seen numerous pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicular deaths over the years due to awful regulations and enforcement of traffic laws. Commonwealth Avenue, formerly known as Don Mariano Marcos Avenue, named after the father of President Ferdinand Marcos, is a 12.4 km (7.7 mi) highway located in Quezon City, Philippines, which spans from 6 to 18 lanes and is the widest in the Philippines. It is one of the major roads in Metro Manila and is designated as part of Radial Road 7 (R-7). It starts from the Quezon Memorial Circle inside the Elliptical Road, and it passes through the areas of Philcoa, Tandang Sora, Balara, Batasan Hills and ends at Quirino Highway in the Novaliches area.

HONOURBLE SPANISH ROADS TO MENTION...1 Puerto de Velefique (or Alto de Velefique) is a high mountain pass, at an elevation of 1,820m above the sea level, located in Sierra de Los Filabres, in Almería Province, Andalusia, Spain. The pass is traversed by the AL-3102 road. 92

3. James Dalton Highway, Alaska

The James Dalton Highway in Alaska, although appearing serene at first glance, is filled with potholes, small flying rocks carried by fast winds, and worst of all it runs through the middle of nowhere.

4. BR-116, Brazil

The second longest road in Brazil has been nicknamed “The Highway of Death” for obvious reasons. Every year thousands of people die due to its poor upkeep and maintenance and even threats from gangs and bandits.

5. The Himalayan Roads

This catch all term for any road leading up into the Himalayas refers to a very dangerous network of unpaved, narrow, and slippery roads that are dotted with crashed cars and rolled over buses.

6. Guoliang Tunnel Road, China

Although it may be hard to see in the photo, this road in China was hollowed out of the side of a mountain by several villagers from the town of Guoliang. Before the construction of this mountain pass the village was cut of from the rest of civilization by the surrounding cliffs. Although it doesn’t see much traffic, due to its construction it is inherently fairly dangerous.

7. Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan

Known as one of the most dangerous roads in Taiwan, the Taroko Gorge Road is full of blind curves, sharp turns, and narrow paths leading through cliffs and mountains.

HONOURBLE SPANISH ROADS TO MENTION...2 Hoya de la Mora is a high mountain pass, located in Granada (Spain), in the Sierra Nevada Park, at an elevation of 2,550m above the sea level, on the A395 road. 93
