Each year, we take this opportunity to recognise exceptional people whose extraordinary dedication and commitment to young people and Scouting has been marked with a St George’s Day Award Recognition means different things to different people. Some like to be thanked in a public way for their achievements, whilst others prefer to keep it low-key. Both reactions are fine and need to be respected and I would like to add my own very loud congratulations to all. The awards and the reasons behind them are all very much deserved. We recognise those who have gone that little bit further in their support of Scouting. The St George’s Day Awards are also an opportunity to mention the truly inspiring recipients of Gallantry and Meritorious Awards who have shown such courage and determination in the most challenging of circumstances. A read of the citations is such a humbling experience. We know that the Section and Unit leaders who deliver exciting and inspiring programmes are at the forefront of making a difference to the lives of young people. But we also need to recognise those individuals who motivate, inspire and support adults to ensure they can do what they do best. This reflects a true partnership which is at the very heart of our continued success. This year we will be joining with GirlGuiding UK for a service at Westminster Abbey on 5 November and I look
forward to welcoming many of you and to thanking you personally for your achievements. Congratulations again and a very big thank you on behalf of our young people and society as a whole to all our volunteers who help to make a difference.

Gallantry Awards Awards for gallantry are made by the Chief Scout, to Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network Members, Scout Active Support Members, Adult Leaders, Section Assistants, Skills Instructors, Administrators, Advisers and Honorary Scouters. The awards are given for acts which would normally include an element of personal risk. There are three levels of award – The Bronze Cross, The Silver Cross and The Gilt Cross. Silver Wolf
‘In recognition of services to Scouting of the most exceptional nature’
The Silver Wolf Award was introduced by Lord Baden-Powell and remains The Scout Association’s highest award for service to Scouting. The Silver Wolf is the unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout and is only awarded ‘for service of an exceptional nature.’ It is not normally awarded until at least a Silver Acorn has been gained. In practice, this means that it is seldom awarded for less than 30 years’ service, although this is not always the case. 4

St George’s Day Awards
Good Service Awards Applications for Good Service can be submitted at any time of the year and if approved, the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service, Award for Merit and its Bar are awarded usually within six weeks of application being received. Applications for the Silver Wolf, Silver Acorn and its Bar are usually considered for inclusion in the St George’s Day Awards list, although they can be requested ‘out of season’ given exceptional circumstances. Nominations that are made by Headquarters for members of staff or some County/Area Appointments for their service to Scouting occur once a year within the St George’s Day Awards.

Lawrie Herbert Skinner – Silver Wolf ‘My Scoutmaster was a rear gunner in Lancaster bombers and his assistant was ex-8th army. They inspired me the most. Scouting was magic. The programmes were exciting and adventurous and we were always out in the country hiking and camping and using the skills we had learned. I have held many leader appointments, creating the same magic I found in Scouting for countless young people, and I am privileged to carry this on now as a Training Adviser.’ Lawrie joined the Movement as a Scout in 1947, taking up his first Leader appointment ten years later. He has since taken on various roles, passing on his vast in-depth knowledge of practical skills. In his role with Scout Active Support, Lawrie visits local Scout groups who are keen to pick up on his scouting knowledge. As a Training Adviser, Lawrie has built up a great relationship with the learners he supports and also with his Local Training Manager and County Training Manager.
