Ideas overload

Contributions to: programme@scouts.org.uk ADVERTISING Richard Ellacott richard.ellacott@thinkpublishing.co.uk Tel: 020 8962 1258 For ease of reading, this supplement refers to all variations of ‘county’ groupings simply as County.

Kirsty Bate is the newest addition to the Programme Team at Gilwell Park, taking the helm from Charlotte Tow as the Programme and Development Adviser for the Explorer Scout section. She introduces this autumnal issue Despite being a little shorter than a normal edition, we have packed in loads of programme ideas in the form of two supplement pull-outs.

Our Sporting Adventure Check out the Our Sporting Adventure supplement which accompanies your copy of the magazine. You’ll find over 40 great activity ideas to support our competition inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The competition, which will run from January to September 2012, is part of the London 2012 Inspire programme. It will help you to engage your Explorers in exciting activities and help them to truly live by the Olympic and Paralympic values. Save some room when planning your next term of activities to incorporate these ideas and help you achieve medals.

Have your say

GET THE CANDLES OUT Don’t forget 2012 is the tenth birthday of the Explorer and Network sections. We’ll be introducing a commemorative badge and holding events at our national centres. Turn the page for more information.

You’ll notice a different look to the centre pages of your supplement. This pull-out includes five activity ideas to help us gain feedback on the programme, and will be fun and interesting for your Explorers to do. Our UK Programme Team is committed to continually improving Scouting and therefore hearing what leaders and Explorers think of the current programme is vital to keeping it relevant and fun. You can run the activities as part of one meeting, or alternatively over the course of a few, but please remember we are looking to get the results by the end of November.

news and updates A shorter supplement doesn’t mean a shortage of goings on in the Explorer Scout section. We rattle through some opportunities and highlights. Shout about your Unit by emailing programme@scouts.org.uk

Fun on the fringe As the world flocked to Edinburgh for the International Fringe Festival and Military Tattoo, Scottish Explorer Scouts weren’t missing out on the action. Hosting their own camp at Bonaly Activity Centre, they made sedan chairs, took on an assault course and undertook challenges in the Scottish capital. Explorer Scouts from the whole of Scotland took part. ‘We have Explorers from Inverness and Aberdeen in the north, right down to the Borders in the south,’ said Jenny Steven, Regional Commissioner for Highlands and Islands. ‘That’s what’s great about the Explorer section, they’re really not afraid to travel.’ Plaudits go to Dead Rock Unit from West Lothian, who were crowned champions and went away with the Andy Mathew trophy.

Choose the tenth birthday badge

2012 marks ten years of the Explorer Scout and Scout Network sections, and a badge is being designed to celebrate this. We want Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members to have a say in the favoured design. Go online to www.scouts.org.uk/ explorer10 to see the designs and choose the winner.
