Despite this being a shorter-than-normal issue, there is still a lot going on in the world of Cub Scouting. Check out the special supplement of activity ideas to support Our Sporting Adventure. This is a Scouting competition designed to get young people across the UK inspired by the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The competition runs from January to September so there is plenty of time for everyone to get involved. Even if you don’t want to compete, you may find some fun and exciting programme ideas that you would like to try out.

Programme pull-out In general terms the current programme is working for the majority of Cub Packs across the country. However, we all know that it is still not perfect and consequently this issue features some helpful activity ideas designed to gather feedback from the Cubs themselves about what they like in the programme. What is their favourite badge? What activities do they like? By asking the Cubs directly, we hope to be able to keep their programme relevant and exciting for 8-10½ year olds. Please use the four-page pull-out to perform the activities, record your results and send it back to us. We can’t wait to see what sort of feedback we get.

Doctor in the camp Pack assistant Russell Webb recently thrilled Cubs at the 1st Winchester five-day summer camp by bringing along a life-sized Tardis. All the hard work and effort paid off as the Pack got to pretend to be the Doctor for the duration of their camp. The Tardis has since been donated to a local primary school. Do you know of any adult volunteers or parents who have gone the extra mile for a Cub Pack? If so, we’d like to hear about them at scouting.magazine@scouts.org.uk

Cub Scout completes full set A Cub in West Mercia has become only the second in the County to gain all 33 activity badges in the section. Ten-year-old Charlie’s achievement was honoured at a special night at the Pack’s meeting place. ‘It has been a lot of hard work at home and at Cubs but it has been a totally awesome experience,’ he said. Cub Leader, Sara Cross, said, ‘To get all 33 activity badges requires a combination of three things; support from parents, good programme planning and, last but not least, a special kind of Cub. Charlie is that Cub’. If any of your Cubs have done something memorable, let us know at scouting.magazine@scouts.org.uk

Animal Magic 3rd Sedgley Cubs enjoyed a fantastic sleepover at Dudley Zoo earlier this year. Cub correspondent Emily reported that the Pack enjoyed a time-travelling activity in their castle lodgings on the Friday night before their day with the animals. ‘First we fed the meerkats some worms, then the tapirs got some fruit and seeds,’ she said. ‘After that we fed the giraffes and the sea lions. My favourite animals were the tapirs.’ If you’ve had any exciting outings with your Cub Pack, drop us a line at scouting.magazine@scouts.org.uk and tell us all about it.

his new online resource guides Cubs through the DIY Activity Badge, offering instructions on how to achieve all the badge requirements. It also works as an aid to leaders, giving you ideas for Pack meeting activities, as well as simple tasks that Cubs can do by themselves. Activities can be adapted to fit your needs as a leader and puzzles can even be printed off to use at camp.

Inspirational activities The resource contains exciting activities which will engage and inspire your Cubs to make things from scratch. Ideas include traditional tasks (learning about tools or wiring a plug), practical pursuits (making mug trees and storage boxes), through to more contemporary capers (building insect hotels and the

our Cub Scouts can participate in pet workshops to work towards their Animal Carer Badge. They can also attend picnic time every weekday at 4pm and 2.30pm at weekends to watch the animals enjoy their healthy snacks. Cubs attending the workshops at a Pets at Home store will receive advice from trained in-store advisers on how to care for pets responsibly to achieve part of their set badge criteria.

Caring Cubs To obtain their Animal Carer Badge, Cub Scouts will learn how to care for small animals, fish or reptiles and

the correct types, varieties and quantities of food to feed them. They will also discover the right habitats for small animals, where they sleep and how to ensure they get the appropriate level of exercise. Pets at Home offers great products, tips and advice to keep your pet happy and healthy. From specialist food to toys and training aids, there is everything an owner could wish for and more. more info There are over 290 Pets at Home stores across the UK.
