When I wanted to learn about adventure, I went to the people who knew what they were doing – you should do the same. Since becoming Chief Scout I have joined in some of the great adventures that take place at our National Scout Activity Centres. I’ve been zorbing with Explorer Scouts at Gilwell Park and lit fires with Cubs at Youlbury. Scout Activity Centres provide young people and adults with access to great activities, helping to promote Scouting as the leading provider of outdoor know-how. The new Network Academies at Hawkhirst and Outdoor Challenge Award weekends at Downe offer the chance to learn skills from a trusted and experienced team. New centres, more adventures… I’m really excited that we can now offer even more thrilling activities and events, as Great Tower in the Lake District and Woodhouse Park in Bristol join the family of centres. So, whether it’s a fun day out for your Beaver Colony or Cub Pack, an exhilarating weekend for your Scout Troop or Explorer Unit, a training course, or anything in between, book your next adventure with Scout Activity Centres. Welcome to Scout Activity Centres This brochure has been specially designed for you, our members. Scout Activity Centres are all operated by The Scout Association – the UK’s largest mixed youth organisation. Our vision is simple; to develop a network of Scout Activity Centres across the UK available to all of you. We already have sites at Downe, Ferny Crofts, Gilwell Park, Hawkhirst and Youlbury, and the addition of Great Tower and Woodhouse Park in April 2011 have helped us come closer to realising that goal.

So, with seven fantastic locations throughout the UK, over 40 activities to choose from, and a range of programmes and courses on offer, a Scout Activity Centre trip is the perfect choice for your group. After all, we are the experts. With over 100 years of experience, we’ve been delivering outdoor adventure longer than anyone else. Scout Activity Centres allow young people and adults to access quality outdoor experiences and facilities to ensure the possibility of progression, and to promote Scouting as the leading UK provider of outdoor education. Any income generated is reinvested into our centres and Scouting across the UK. Of course, you will already know that our Scout Activity Centres offer amazing outdoor experiences at affordable prices, but new for 2011/12 we are now offering groups the opportunity to complete a range of activity badges and awards at our sites.

What we do 1. Self programme The ‘classic’ Scout programme aimed at those who want to run elements of their visit themselves. With camping or indoor accommodation options, in one of our purpose-built lodges, you can choose any number of the instructed activity sessions on offer. Self programme is ideal for those that already have a clear idea of what they want to cover during their visit or are experienced leaders. Many of our activity sessions deliver badge requirements. Take a look at the section specific pages for further details. 2. Full programme Let us do the hard work for you. We will work with you to understand your requirements when you book in order to build a tailor-made package that meets the specific objectives of your group. Full catering can be provided with an option of indoor accommodation or camping, including all equipment should you wish. Skills exchange – if you are new to Scouting or feel uncertain about running a group camp then we also offer an intermediate option between self and full programme. Our staff will work with you in designing the programme and support you with each stage of its delivery. These visits will complement your Nights Away training (either before or after), allowing you to experience a camp first hand without the stress of planning and implementing the whole programme.

Activity Days – If you wish to bring your group to your local centre for the day we can customise a fun-packed day of activities based on your time constraints and needs. 3. Badge courses – New for all sections Bring your group to one of our centres and complete one of a number of badges during your stay. With several badges for each section to choose from, taking between just a few hours to a few days, our experienced staff and instructors will ensure that you and your group get the most out of your visit and cover all the areas needed to complete the badge. Take a look at the section specific pages for further details. 4. Network and adult courses As well as all of our fantastic activities for young people, we also organise a number of courses for our adult volunteers at our centres throughout the year. We realise that leaders need time away to have some fun or to develop your own skills. See the section pages for further details. 5. Events We organise and run a number of large events across our centres throughout the year, catering for all Members from Beavers to adults. See our section specific pages for more information. 5

ABOUT DOWNE Downe is a beautiful, wooded 86-acre site. The centre is part of a proposed World Heritage Site due to its long association with Charles Darwin. The famous naturalist once roamed the woodland, carrying out experiments.

Making achieving easy We understand that there is a demand on your time to help your young people achieve as many badges and awards as they can. That’s why we’ve been working hard to produce a number of courses which meet the requirements of activity badges and awards at our centres. Whether you are visiting for an evening, or taking part in a week-long camp, these courses can be included in your programme. Although there are options for you to deliver elements of the programme yourself, the following section of this brochure has been designed with the easier option in mind – allowing our instructors to run the courses for you. Over the following pages, you will find specific programmes, which have been designed to fulfil all the requirements for a range of specific badges by section. In addition, you will see details of national events, across the sections.

Staged Activity badges Whether you join us as a Beaver Scout or as an Explorer Scout, the Staged Activity Badges have been designed to provide a unified approach throughout the sections. Scout Activity Centres can offer the following:

nights away Using our centres for residential experiences helps young people to progress through the stages of the award – from 1 to 200 nights away.

Hikes Away All of our centres have a range of different hike routes, all designed to allow you and your group to take in the wonderful surrounding countryside. We have something for every group, with routes ranging from 3 to 30 kilometres.

Emergency Aid Our trained staff can deliver all stages of this award, ranging from basic first aid techniques for younger members, right up to one day Red Cross General First Aid courses for leaders.

partnership awards Scout Activity Centres are the perfect place in which to join forces with other groups, or our own staff teams, to undertake a project that will benefit the local area.

environment partnership award Our centres provide a unique setting to undertake environmental activities. Encourage your group to discuss what benefit they may be able to bring to the site and talk to us about undertaking this task in partnership. Ideas might include building bird boxes to place in the woodland, or helping clear an overgrown area of the site. 17

Did you know? Beaver adventure days Experience a day filled with at least four instructed activities from the range on offer on centre. With prearranged dates through the year, or available as a bespoke programme for your Colony.

Outdoor Challenge Award

Climber

Experience a two-night camp led by our trained instructors. Your Troop will have the chance to learn skills such as fire lighting, gathering and choosing suitable firewood, using a saw and cooking on a fire as well as some adventurous activities, such as crate stacking and 3G Swing.

Our experienced staff will support your group in learning and developing the technical skills required in climbing. Choose to complete it over a weekend, a week or six weeks.

Campsite Service Master at Arms Participating in either archery or rifle shooting, over a series of sessions will help you gain this activity badge. Choose to complete it over a weekend, a week or six weeks. At the end of the course we will test your skill and precision as you participate in a competition with your Troop.

Speak to us about your group undertaking this activity badge during their time with us. Troops are encouraged to make a positive impact whilst on the site through a variety of tasks including assisting the centre team in maintaining and developing the site.

Did you know? Your Scouts can camp on site without a leader if they have an approved Event Passport.

Water sports courses

other badge options

(only available at Great Tower and Hawkhirst) Our qualified staff can provide instruction for Scouts to achieve a range of water sport activity badges by taking a course in canoeing, kayaking, sailing or power boating. These courses can vary in duration from a half day up to a six-day course.

You can also achieve Forester, Naturalist, Navigator, Pioneer and Communicator Activity Badges while at the centre, which can be completed with support from our instructors during a whole day.

Adventure Challenge

Did you know?

This award requires young people to take part in three different adventurous activities such as high ropes, raft building and pioneering. During a camp at one of our centres, this can be achieved with or without support from our staff.

Camping at one of our centres will fulfil a variety of requirements from activity badges and challenge awards including Emergency Aid and Camper Activity Badges.

Activity Centre Service Help maintain and develop a site of your choice. Your efforts will contribute towards the ten days you must complete to achieve the award.

Water sports courses (only available at Great Tower and Hawkhirst) Achieve a range of water sport activity badges by taking a course in canoeing, kayaking, sailing or power boating. Courses vary in duration from a halfday to a six-day course.

physical recreation Master At Arms Centre staff can provide as many hours of qualified instruction as you need to achieve the master at arms option of the Physical Recreation Activity Badge. Test your skills at the end of the course with a Unit competition.

Personal activity permit assessments Our centre teams can help your Explorers achieve their personal permits in a range of activities including raft building, climbing and sailing. These permits allow your Unit to safely participate in the appropriate activity with other permit holders.

Did you know? Groups of Explorers who have their Event Passport can camp on-site without leader supervision.

Activity Academies Designed to develop a participant’s skills in a specific area over an intensive week. Activity academies focus on either water sports, climbing, hillwalking or an introduction to instructing. All of these courses can give you the opportunity to gain valuable NGB qualification and/or Scout activity permits.

Beaver Leader residential training Are you worried that you don’t have the appropriate skills or confidence to take your Colony camping? Come along to one of our pre-arranged weekends to meet like-minded leaders and work with our experienced teams. We will help you develop a range of skills including programme ideas, correct use of equipment and much more.

Leader Planning weekends Use our centre as the backdrop for getting your leadership team together before the new term. Experience new activities whilst having the time to

plan activities for the coming weeks. The weekend will be facilitated by a member of The Scout Association’s team, while we encourage groups to share ideas and good practice. You will also have the opportunity to try your hand at some of our adventurous activities before you bring your group to have a go.

Practical skills training Our instructing teams have a wealth of knowledge in a variety of traditional Scouting skills. Why not book a half day of activities for us to share some bushcraft or backwoods cooking skills with you?

Adventurous activity permit training and assessments Our instructing staff are able to train and assess you in a range of different activities, depending on those available on centre.

FAQS WHAT LEVEL OF SUPPORT CAN I EXPECT FROM SAC STAFF? As much or as little as you need. Our programmes are designed to give flexibility. Our centre teams have been helping groups organise their trips for a very long time and can offer advice and support to make your trip a success. DO YOU HAVE FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS? Many of our facilities have full disabled access and toilet facilities – please contact your chosen centre for details. Our instructors will make every effort to include those with varying needs during the activity sessions. Please ensure you make the centre aware of any special requirements when booking so that the necessary arrangements can be made or an alternative activity offered to you. DO I NEED TO STAY WITH MY GROUP THE WHOLE DAY? Each activity group needs to be supervised during instructed activity sessions. Our staff will take responsibility for safety during these sessions. However, the group leader will be responsible for the young people, including their behaviour, whilst on site. ARE YOUR ACTIVITY INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED? All our staff go through an intensive training process and will be qualified, where appropriate, with the relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualification for the activity. Where no appropriate NGB exists they will be in-house trained and assessed. Our staff teams are also international, as we attract people from all over the world. Guests often comment that this adds to their experience.

CAN WE RUN SOME OF OUR OWN ACTIVITIES? Yes. We welcome you to run as many activities as you wish. Our staff can deliver as little or as much of your programme as you choose. Select a full programme and we can deliver everything, or choose the classic self programme option and build your own around a few instructed sessions. We also have a selection of self-instructed sessions available on each centre. DO I NEED A NIGHTS AWAY PERMIT TO USE THE NATIONAL CENTRES? The leader in charge of the visit will need to hold the appropriate Nights Away permit for the type of visit you are undertaking. Some of our badge courses are designed to support less confident leaders or those who have recently acquired their nights away permit. If your leaders do not hold nights away permits our staff can support the planning of a full programme option and deliver it in full with you as leaders in support of this. CAN YOUNG PEOPLE CAMP ON-SITE WITHOUT LEADER SUPERVISION? If the young people in question hold their Event Passport then we welcome them to use our sites for camping. WHY SCOUT ACTIVITY CENTRES? Making a booking 1. CHOOSE A LOCATION Decide which centre meets your requirements. 2. ARRANGE A SITE VISIT Either attend one of our regular open days throughout the year or contact the team to arrange a visit at a time that suits you. 3. DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO DO Self programme or full programme? Full catering or self catering? 4. CHECK AVAILABILITY Get in touch with the centre directly or email sac@scouts.org.uk 5. MAKE A PROVISIONAL BOOKING The centre will send you confirmation and request your deposit.* 6. PAY DEPOSIT TO CONFIRM Once you have paid your deposit our team will contact you to arrange your programme.*

MEET THE TEAM Our staff come from all over the world and are selected for their passion and belief in what we do. Each undertakes a comprehensive training programme and enhanced CRB check. Where appropriate, staff hold the relevant national governing body (NGB) qualification or have been assessed by a suitably qualified technical advisor.
