Adventure... bring it on As Chief Scout there really is so much that I love about Scouting. From the fantastic people I meet as I travel across the UK who give up their time to help young people fulfil their potential, to the young people themselves who have so much enthusiasm and such an adventurous spirit. It wasn’t long ago that we were welcoming Great Tower and Woodhouse Park to the Scout Activity Centres family. Just 12 months on, I’m really excited that we can offer even more thrilling activities and events at our two new centres at Yr Hafod in Snowdonia, Wales and Crawfordsburn in Northern Ireland. Scout Activity Centres provide young people and adults with unique access to great activities and experiences. Each centre is different and has its own character. Friendly staff are at hand to help promote Scouting as the leading provider of outdoor adventure. With so many opportunities in such diverse centres, Scouts of all ages have access to a variety of events, activities, terrain and accommodation – so there’s something for everyone. So when it comes to adventure… let’s make 2013 the year we bring it on.

welcome to your scout activity centres It’s been a busy year since we launched the 2012 Making Achieving Easy Guide this time last year. The guide is a comprehensive catalogue of all the badge and award courses, training and events that are available to our Members across our centres. We’ve had a great deal of interest in our courses and received some very good feedback from guests who have enjoyed a number of experiences from the Outdoor Challenge and Water Sports Academy, to the Beaver Leader Residential training. More to come With the addition of two new centres, Crawfordsburn in Northern Ireland and Yr Hafod in Wales, we’re pleased to be able to offer more groups across the UK the opportunity to complete a wider range of products across more locations. These range from the Communicator Badge for Beavers and Cubs to Cub and Scout Leadership Camps and Ultimate Adventures for Scouts and adults alike. The focus for 2013 is still very much on making it easy for you as leaders to help young people gain badges as they progress through Scouting. But just as important is supporting members in our older sections to become qualified young leaders across a range of disciplines. You can take part in Adventurous Permit training and assessment, NICAS climbing awards, NGBs in mountain leader training and Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) training weekends. These courses can be included in your programme whether you are visiting our centres for an evening, weekend or taking part in a weeklong camp. You can run some of these programmes yourself but the courses in this guide offer you the easier option of allowing our instructors to run them for you. Flexible Programme As well as the badge courses, training programmes and events in this guide, Scout Activity Centres also host a whole range of activity days. We like to form partnerships with our guests and will tailor programmes to suit you. Talk to our centre teams about how we can build your programme around activities like caving, kayaking, sailing, mountain boarding and zip wire. We have skills and teamwork based activities too like rifle shooting, archery, hillwalking, problem solving, orienteering, climbing and low ropes. We’re confident we have something for everyone so start planning next year’s programme now. Safety in Scouting All our centres have an exceptional level of safety standards and systems which are at the core of what we do. As part of this we work with a number of external bodies including AALA, Adventuremark, BCU, LOtC, MLC, MLUK, and RYA.
