Exploring the power of tradition and truth‌

April 27 & 28, 2018 Treaty 6 Territory, Amiskwaciy Waskahikan Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton

Welcome!

On behalf of the Shumka family, I welcome you to these world premiere performances and thank you for being witness to the journey of Ancestors & Elders. Hai-Hai! When I first heard a story of Aboriginal assistance to Ukrainian settlers in the early 1900s, I knew it had to be told.* These berries are safe to eat. This basket of medicinal herbs will heal you. Here is where the fish can be found. This is a portrayal of the true compassion and humanity we are all capable of. Why would the Indigenous peoples – whose land had been stripped of them by the colonials years earlier – try to help these new settlers who were given this harsh land to till? I’ve always been interested in the similarities between Indigenous and Ukrainian cultures. Reverence for the land. The beauty of beading, braiding and embroidery. The significance of circles, rhythms and drums in our dances. And as I got to know our many artistic collaborators, I realized we were more similar than I ever suspected. Such love of tradition, of family, of prayers and blessings. Such respect for our ancestors and elders. Given our current point of history in Canada, it is even more important to explore this connection. The weight of Truth and Reconciliation is difficult for most of us. What can we do? How can we possibly help? Telling this story of mutual respect and support, one that acknowledges the truth and celebrates our cultures collectively and collaboratively, is but one step in this healing process. Ancestors & Elders will have a long life beyond these performances. There are too many giving it life for it to lie down for long. Its message must continue to be told. We are all human. We have the same wants and needs. We wish to be loved and supported. We want to create and celebrate. We can do this together. I have so much respect and love for our new partners and friends whom we have come to know in this process. The last year has been a journey of true learning, mutual respect of our differences, and recognition of our many similarities. This quote has been an inspiration throughout the journey: “We must strive to become good ancestors.” When we look at the legacy of the ancestors and elders who came before us, we realize this is an enormous expectation. But with each gesture of acceptance, openness, and the simple joining of hands, it seems more and more possible… Darka Tarnawsky Executive Director Ukrainian Shumka Dancers

* We acknowledge the foresight of Myrna Kostash and Sharon Pasula whose project entitled Zemlya/Nanaskomun: We Give Thanks for the Land: a Ukrainian-Canadian and Aboriginal Ceremonial Exchange of Gifts first brought these stories to our attention.

From the Directors… Free land. A narrative that has influenced so many Canadian Newcomers’ stories, is inherently devoid of the Indigenous perspective and title to the land. For far too long, it has gone unchallenged that the narrative of Canadian westward development involved a benevolent relationship with helpful, selfless indigenous people. The legacy of the Indian Act, Indian residential schools, and continued effects of colonialism on First Nations people across the country is now coming to the forefront. It is by following through on the calls to action of the TRC, further education, and artistic collaborations like these that we may begin to truly understand the various perspectives that will create a more whole, healthy, and equitable experience for everyone who resides on this land. We must get beyond blame – we must get beyond guilt. Only then can we admire the beautiful reflection of one another we see in our dances, traditional practices, and communities. I hope that our piece reflects the journey we have undertaken to understand each other more deeply and begin a path to true ally ship and conciliation. Barry Bilinsky Co-Director

The value of a great story can never be overstated. It weaves itself into the fabric of our relationships, our perspectives, and our understanding of the world around us. We seek endlessly for great stories that we hope will touch our minds, our hearts, and our souls. It is a simple yearning, and yet staggering in its universality to all cultures, languages, and peoples worldwide. What you’re about to witness is the culmination of an amazing story that has brought voices and hearts from two different legacies together in the name of taking steps to “[explore] the power of tradition and truth.” Through our journey we have endeavored to create something that is more than a dance piece, a political discourse, or a history lesson. We aim to truly and genuinely engage each other with humble and open hearts as we share our most personal stories – the ones that have seen us become who we are today – in hopes that this sharing will help us grow further in love and courage tomorrow and every day thereafter... BLESSING

Act I

Alsena White, Saddle Lake Cree Nation MaryAnn Baziuk, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers Alumnus

ANCESTORS & ELDERS We all have the same beginning… born under the same stars above us and on the same land below us. We listen to the stars and respect all that the land provides. Day and night. Wind and fire. Soil and water. Flora and fauna. They surround us and bring sustenance to our lives and our spirits. We acknowledge them. And we begin… At a modern cultural festival, two families of dancers, one Ukrainian and one Indigenous, prepare to present their traditional dance. As they do so, we are taken inside their connections to dance; as they dance, we witness the power of their art to connect them to their heritage and the living spirit of this land both communities call home. Masked ‘elemental’ dancers personify the living spirit and literal common ground between Ukrainian and Indigenous communities, and connect their ‘real time’ scenes to the timeless Sacred Space where we are all most vulnerable, most simply human and alive. On the Indigenous side, we see Kohkum, who has worked hard to maintain her connection to land and ceremony; Joanne, who carries the scars of Indian Residential School; and Sage, her daughter, who inherits both their strength and their struggle to stay connected to the beauty that sustains them in the face of colonial hostility. Meanwhile, through Baba and Lesia, we witness how the Ukrainian community, leaving behind their homeland to make a life in a distant country, had to persevere without the wisdom and guidance from the grandparents and elders they left behind. Lesia endeavours to help her own daughter, Nadia, find the heart in the dance, to hold on to the roots that her ancestors toiled so hard to establish. Survival, for both Indigenous and Ukrainian immigrant people in Alberta, often meant silence. In that silence, we have missed connections; in that silence, there are also many lost stories of the linkages between our communities, that have helped us both survive tremendous loss and struggle. In Ancestors & Elders, we use dance to begin to break that silence… to explore the power of tradition and truth…
