Alex: Tonbridge School
A member of Tonbridge’s Upper Sixth, Alex, from Hong Kong, will be saying a fond farewell later this year as he heads to university. A student with a passion for science and discovery, Alex says he has also learned the value of becoming more independent during his time at the School.

WHICH SUBJECT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST?
Biology! Our teachers are amazing, plus I’ve always been enthusiastic about how even minor changes can have huge effects on organisms and their habitats.
WHAT UNIVERSITY ARE YOU HEADING TO?
If all goes well, I’ll be studying at the University of Oxford, exploring Biology alongside students as keen on it as I am, under the instruction of the best academics in the world.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CAREER PLANS AS YET?
Honestly, no! I’m just hoping to find a job that allows me to make some small differences in the world, while continuing to fuel my curiosity.
WHAT HAS YOUR TIME AT TONBRIDGE BEEN LIKE?
It’s been busy in the best possible way, with all the fun activities and academic challenges available to us. Getting to know the people here – the astoundingly diverse, talented, inspiring members of the Tonbridge community – has been awesome. I’ve always found joy, too, in laughing and working beside my friends in the cosy Biology Library, part of the Barton Science Centre.
WHAT HAS TONBRIDGE TAUGHT YOU, DO YOU THINK?
Community is something I’ve learned a lot about here, especially as a boarder. There are very good incentives for everyone to get along and work together.
Independence is another important lesson I’ve taken home. Managing my time, organising my stuff and relying on my own skills and intuition when necessary. I’m still learning, of course, but I think my four years here have prepared me really well for the future.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BOY STARTING AT TONBRIDGE THIS YEAR?
Make the most of your teachers’ support and the School’s resources. Be kind to everyone and look out for your friends. And, most of all, have fun!
