McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer

In 2021, McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer’s training and capacity building programmes supported 194 lawyers, policymakers and civil society representatives from 58 countries to enhance their abilities to develop and defend laws to prevent and control cancer.

The McCabe Centre’s success in virtual learning was recognised by the LearnX Live! awards for excellence in online education. The McCabe Centre was awarded with three gold awards for its self-paced online course to help government officials in low- and middle-income countries learn about using law to address cancer.

Beginning in November 2021, the McCabe Centre held its first online workshop to support countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region in developing and defending tobacco control laws, held jointly with the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office and the Convention Secretariat to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Over 50 participants attended from 13 countries.

Participation in events remained high, including UICC’s World Cancer Leaders’ Summit to share thoughts on innovative partnerships, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia Conference, speaking about regulating cancer misinformation and the Global Alcohol Policy Alliance virtual event, discussing alcohol control in the Pacific. The McCabe Centre also attended the Ninth WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Conference of the Parties as part of UICC’s delegation, and hosted webinars for alumni. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in February 2022, the McCabe Centre is looking forward to continuing its impact for many years to come.
