To meet the demand for geriatric care professionals needed to manage long-term care, the University of Florida offers an online Graduate Certificate program.

Job opportunities in geriatrics and long-term care are expected to grow by more than 35%. [Bureau of Labor Statistics]

The home and community-based care sector has grown to approx. $400 million/year and the provision of services in long-term care is estimated to be as much as $2 billion/year.

Apply general principles and knowledge necessary to integrate theory into the practice of care coordination and management

Upon completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

Demonstrate the ability to assess and identify client strengths, needs, concern, preferences, and establish goals and a comprehensive plan of care Coordinate services and interventions by referring, educating, negotiating, and mediating with client formal and informal providers in order to meet goals of a care plan Perform ongoing monitoring and reassessment of client status and satisfaction with service in order to evaluate progress toward goal achievement Exercise sound professional judgment based on ethical standards/expectations of field including advocacy for client autonomy, professional accountability, and peer review Demonstrate ability to conduct and/or evaluate appropriate research on effective case management techniques for provision of services to aging clients and their families


Upon completion of this program, graduates will have the expanded knowledge required for either developing their own private practice Professional Geriatric Care Management Business or advancing their career in management of Long-term Care Facilities, Home Health Care, or Public Service Agencies. * The program is also designed to meet the educational requirements for those seeking to become a Certified Geriatric Care Manager through the International Commission on Health Care Certification.

GEY 5935: Ethical, Legal, and Business Aspects of Geriatric Care Management

This introductory course provides and overview of the multidisciplinary field of gerontology, aging services, and community resources for geriatric care management. Material will be covered that informs students about the basic biology, psychology, and sociology of the aging process. Patterns of service use and public and private resources to meet the individual needs of geriatric clients are examined. Principles of case management and the role and function of the private geriatric care manager are presented.

This course presents the basic elements and procedures for conducting a comprehensive geriatric assessment and care plan report. The content of the course covers the fundamentals of a psychosocial and functional assessment. Current issues in dementia and depression are discussed. Emphasis is placed on conducting the client interview, gathering all necessary information, and incorporating that information into a cohesive written care plan.

This course examines the role of communication in successful care plan implementation and coordination. Students will explore the impact of family systems on the provision of care for individuals and aging families. Topics include caregiver assessment, care monitoring, helping mid-life children work together to care for aging parents, preparing for and facilitating family meetings, forgiveness, and effective use of technology.

This course explores the ethical and legal issues encountered in the practice of geriatric care management including informed consent, decision making capacity, advanced directives, and the regulation and financing of long-term care. The course will also address issues associated with starting a business in Geriatric Care Management including entrepreneurial risk, marketing, fee for service billing, and human resources, Emphasis is placed on creating a business plan.

GEY 6936: Clinical Experience


HOW TO APPLY Applications are accepted on a year round basis. Newly admitted students will begin the program in the Fall or Spring semester of every year. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree, preferably in a health-related or social service discipline, e.g. Nursing, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Gerontology, Sociology, Health Education, etc. In addition, applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
